You know, there's a really great film called "The Big Short" that has a cameo by Margot Robbie, it's the true story, with very easy to understand explanations as to what the hell happened to the world economies in 2008. It's also got Steve Carell, though this may be unlike other roles of his you're familiar with

Let's be clear: these guys were crooks and frauds. They didn't "work hard." They scammed. and it was based on a real-life person whose account of his story, is also questionable. Having said that, this was a solid movie. Leo should have won for this role and not for The Revenant. The scene of being drugged out while trying to get into his car alone was Oscar-worthy.

Yes, Jordan Belfort was extremely intelligent and charming. But, of course, Jordan Belfort also was, is, and always will be a sociopath. Anyway, as usual, superb portrayal by Di Caprio. And the script was fast and flawless (didn't seem like 3 hrs, did it.) Also recommend seeing another excellent film with Leo (and Kate Winslet) - "Revolutionary Road", but make sure you have something fun scheduled for later (it's a pretty depressing one.)

@mobyworm - extremely inteligent? I wouldn't go that far. Definitely more than the average person out there.
But he was also a very good con artist. You don't have to be that inteligentt to be one, but you need to know a lot about psychology too, and people. I bet he did a lot of studying of it too at some point, from some proper books (just to help him even more).
And be charming of course, including lying, cheating, and manipulating - without any remorse. And that was probably quite easy for him to do.
      Sociopath? Yeah, definitely.
But you don't have be that highly inteligent to behave like that, and do all of the above. Or be a sociopath - granted, a lot of them are inteligent, but definitely not all, far from it - based on the usual standards of measurement techniques (and no, being a member of Mensa doesn't qualify, as those kind of tests can be practiced quite well befor the exams, just so you can see the patterns and know what too look for in the answers).
Also, all of it will help you to move "upwards" in the society, pretty much in any area of your specific expertise or career, hence a lot of CEOs are actually sociopaths.
And that is actually what some corporations want and need at that levels of management. All in all, interesting story, but plenty of those around in the financial sectors in London or NY.

*I'm not sure if you're familiar with "Club Med" or "Club Mediterranean", the French travel and tourism operator with tropical vacation spots around the world. In the US, if you go a Federal Minimum Security Prison, they call it "Club Fed", because, theoretically, they are not as violent as regular prisons, and, in some, you are not held in locked cells, but in bunk beds, like a Summer camp, or Sleepaway camp. I don't think they have tennis courts, like in the movie, but they do have more outdoor exercise facilities than regular prisons.*

No, they don't have tennis courts. A few have so-called handball courts, but nothing more than hitting balls against a concrete wall with some paint lines on the ground. Most have done away with the free weights, if not all now. Most recreation is now on the level of what you might expect at a church social - softball, botchi ball, football, etc. There's also an awful lot of card playing amongst those with brains, and there's a lot of prisoners who have higher IQs in for white crime

    Interesting.
*The Wolf of Wall Street* proves my point that the only difference between psychopaths and sociopaths is that psychopaths are born that way.
The scene where Belfort teaches his workers how to become rich?
That's exactly how you learn to become a sociopath.
*Jordan Belfort* : [narrating to the camera] An I.P.O. is an initial public offering. It's the first time a stock is offered for sale to the general population. Now as the firm taking the company public, we set the initial sales price then sold those shares right back to our friends. Yet...
    [stops and chuckles]
*Jordan Belfort* : Look, I know you're not following what I'm saying anyway, right? That's... that's okay, that doesn't matter. The real question is this: was all this legal? Absolutely fucking not. But we were making more money than we knew what do with.
    ---------------
Personally I prefer Oliver Stone's *Wallstreet* or David Mamet's *Glengarry Glen Ross.*
Wall Street explains why the US has so many fuctioning psychopaths and sociopaths, cauz they can easily find job as a trader or CEO.
Gordon Gekko is my prime example of a functioning psychopath / sociopath.
*Gordon Gekko* : The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, the price per paper clip. We pick that rabbit out of the hat while everybody sits out there wondering how the hell we did it. Now you're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy, are you buddy? It's the free market. And you're a part of it. You've got that killer instinct. Stick around pal, I've still got a lot to teach you.
*Gordon Gekko* : In the last seven deals that I've been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars. Thank you. I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.
    ---------------
*Glengarry Glen Ross* has my favorite movie scene of all time.
*Blake* : You're talking about what? You're talking about... bitching about that sale you shot, some son-of-a-bitch who don't wanna buy land, some broad you're trying to screw, so forth. Let's talk about something important. They all here?
*Williamson* : All but one. Ricky Roma.
*Blake* : I'm going anyway. Let's talk about something important.
    [to Levene]
*Blake* : Put that coffee down! Coffee's for closers only. You think I'm fucking with you? I am not fucking with you! I'm here from downtown. I'm here from Mitch and Murray. And I'm here on a mission of mercy. Your name's Levine? You call yourself a salesman, you son of a bitch?
*Dave Moss* : I don't gotta sit here and listen to this shit.
*Blake* : You certainly don't, pal, 'cause the good news is... you're fired. The bad news is... you've got, all of you've got just one week to regain your jobs starting with tonight. Starting with tonight's sit. Oh? Have I got your attention now? Good. 'Cause we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired. Get the picture? You laughing now? You got leads. Mitch and Murray paid good money to get their names to sell them. You can't close the leads you're given, then you can't close shit! You ARE shit! Hit the bricks, pal, and beat it 'cause you are going OUT!
*Shelley Levene* : The leads are weak.
*Blake* : The leads are weak? The fucking leads are weak? You're weak! I've been in this business 15 years...
*Dave Moss* : What's your name?
*Blake* : Fuck you! That's my name! You know why, mister? You drove a Hyundai to get here. I drove an $80,000 red BMW that's parked right outside. THAT'S my name! And your name is you're wanting. You can't play in the man's game, you can't close them... then go home and tell your wife your troubles. Because only one thing counts in this life: Get them to sign on the line which is dotted. You hear me, you fucking faggots? A-B-C. A... Always, B... Be, C... Closing. Always be closing. ALWAYS BE CLOSING! A-I-D-A. Attention, Interest, Decision, Action. Attention: Do I have your attention? Interest: Are you interested? I know you are, 'cause it's fuck or walk. You close or you hit the bricks. Decision: Have you made your decision for Christ? And Action. A-I-D-A. Get out there! You've got the prospects coming in. You think they came in here to get out of the rain? A guy don't walk on the lot lest he wants to buy. They're sitting out there waiting to give you their money. Are you gonna take it? Are you man enough to take it? What's the problem, pal? You... Moss.
*Dave Moss* : You're such a hero, you're so rich, how come you're coming down here wasting your time with such a bunch of bums?
*Blake* : [points to his gold wristwatch] You see this watch? You see this watch I'm wearing?
    *Dave Moss* : Yeah.
*Blake* : This watch costs more than your car. I made $970,000 in sales commissions last year. How much you make? You see, pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. You're a nice guy? I don't give a shit. Good father? Fuck you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here? Close! You think I'm too hard on you? You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? If you can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit? You don't like it, leave. I can go out there tonight with the leads and materials you've got and make myself $15,000. Tonight! In two hours! Can you? Can YOU? Go and do likewise. A-I-D-A. Get mad you son of a bitches! Get mad! You want to know what it takes to sell real estate? It takes BRASS BALLS to sell real estate! Go and do likewise, gents. The money's out there. You pick it up, it's yours. You don't, I got no sympathy for you. You wanna go out on those sits tonight and close. CLOSE! It's yours. If not, you're gonna be shining my shoes. And you know what you'll be saying - a bunch of losers sittin' around in a bar? 'Oh yeah. I used to be a salesman. It's a tough racket.' These are the new leads. These are the Glengarry leads. And to you they're gold, and you don't get them. Why? Because to give them to you is just throwing them away. They're for closers. I'd wish you all good luck, but you wouldn't know what to do with it if you got it.
[goes up to Moss's desk and glares at him]
*Blake* : And to answer your question, pal, why am I here? I came here because Mitch and Murray asked me to. They asked me for a favor. I said the real favor, follow my advice and fire your fucking ass, because a loser is a loser!

One of my favorite movies from one of my favorite directors. And yes, Margot Robbie does have "charms". I doubt I would like this guy if I ever met him. I dealt with wannabes like him when I was young. You always wonder "what kind of scam is this guy working on now?". It's exhausting.

You should check out Catch Me if you Can, which is based on the true story of Frank Abagnale who cons many people of money by posing as various professionals. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio playing as that character and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent who goes after him.

This is one of my favorite movies. I am always a little surprised when a see a woman enjoy this movie, as it is through an unfiltered eyes of a man and seeing how driven by sex we are. It is cool you enjoyed it.
The comment "The chickens will come home to roost." means if you do enough bad things it will catch up to you. So when his father made this comment he was warning Jordan that if he continues to live this way it would result in problems later on.
