Nelson, you can still love Oakland while holding people in your community accountable. It starts by condemning violence which is the norm in this city. I feel the reason African-Americans are so inclined to not speak up against violence is because the message is in the culture, for example rap music.
It’s unfortunate that many Oakland natives are not good people with decent morals and the community fails to hold them accountable which has emboldened them to continue to torment Oakland communities as well as others across the country. This conversation literally makes people too upset to even have in person, but I will continue to try as I’m personally impacted by this reality. I’m also African-American, live in this city and I’ve even worked for Chef Nelson. Something has got to change if Oakland is going to ever prosper again and if the problem is with crime, then we need to address crime and stop making excuses and hold criminals accountable.
Criminals & thugs are revered by many in Oakland whereas hardworking successful entrepreneurs are often reviled. Government employees seem to just want their paychecks, their pensions and avoid a full days work.
Anywhere under 1 million home price in the bay the government employees laziness and incompetence is 3rd world.
There is nothing you can do when the community you serve is doing this to you. Great delicious food but thinking of moving is not a bad idea. Your restaurant deserves more than this.

Dude you want my advice. Move out of Oakland. I get where you’re coming from but there are so many other places out there that are safer and where the rule of law still applies. Consider this too. If those criminals are caught they will most likely be released and free to break in again. So this may not be the last time. Leave Oakland. Start doing the research where to move you restaurant.

Were their alarms even connected to the Oakland PD. Who’s monitoring their security systems. If I wanted to start a new business in Oakland, it seems like the security business would be a great place to start!
Police do nothing. In California they will have 8 police w to deal with a homeless. In Arkansas a police will pit move a criminal and clear the road in 2 minutes. Union here has destroyed policing.

If you can’t get support from your local government or law enforcement, especially since you are paying their salaries, take it to a city who would appreciate you and your restaurant. If your patrons love your restaurant they will gladly come to your new location.
