6:35 in the book "Dante" it's explained that the Blood Angels' practice of artistry and beauty is to help hone their focus and concentration, so they can more strongly resist the Red Thirst and Black Rage- new recruits spend a year practising arts and crafts before they even start combat training. Definitely makes sense they'd fall to it more easily when they give up the thing that helped them fight it!
"40k is a horror setting" That says so much with so few words and gives a great impression of EVERYTHING in the game so much better than a lot of pop culture depictions
The thing is the 40k setting is so large and expansive that it can literally serve as the backdrop for anything, you could even make slapstick comedy or a romance novel in the 40k setting. I don't really think everything needs to be grim dark and edgy for it to have a place in the 40k universe. You need light in order to have darkness.
I think it's honestly hard to define 40k at large as one genre because it contains such a variety of them in different media interpretation. Like the Watcher novel was straight up, actual existential horror, then Ciaphus Caine's novels are more like a military farce parody, then you have Gaunt's Ghosts that takes it to more of a gritty, espionage/guerilla action environment, Horus Heresy reads like borderline biblical epics, and then Eisenhorn (from what I understand, haven't cracked that open yet) is a political intrigue detective series. All of those books are still about just the Imperium with a variety of tones. This isn't to say that variety is bad, I think it's one of 40k's strengths that there's something for almost anyone in this universe. It does make it hard to pin down what 40k as a whole falls into, though. Not to be contrarian, but personally, closest genre I'd describe it as in a phrase is "Gothic Scifi."
I would argue that there are no good guys in the 40K settings. Isn't that what the video is about? Besides, the only thing necessary for one loyal force to fight another is just one overly zealous inquisitor.
@@withoutatrigger Sure sure, depicted faction is called the sisters of sin and they worship chaos. While I suppose it doesn’t clear the rainbow warriors of any suspicion it definitely adds context.

Loved reading about them in Warriors of Ultramar. Their audiodrama "Taker of Heads" is fantastic too. They also had a chapter in the "Successors" anthology. They're what I'd describe as Kroot but Space Marines.
Oddly enough, Mortifactors are also probably one of the more 'progressive' Astartes chapters in terms of adhering to the Imperial faith. They recognize the rot in Imperial society that comes with blindly clutching doctrine and law too strictly. Definitely an interesting mix that this chapter is, probably one of my favorite chapters at the moment

Given that Space Marine get a special organ that lets them consume memories of people that they eat, cannibalism is probably fairly common for space marines. (Which support your hypothesis of 40k being a horror setting)
Heyyy wait a minute; I'd recognise your painting style anywhere and you painted a mini for each faction! Very thoughtful and understated touch. Great vid too, much thinking fodder for a kitbashed successor chapter thank you for all the lore ideas!
An interesting shift from painting and history of miniatures to Lore. But this is one, maybe the only aspect of 40K that I enjoy, making up or following one's own obscure and cursed chapter.
'The Reverie' by Peter Fehervari goes into detail of how the Angels Resplendent became Penitent. It's also a fantastic read as it shows how the horror genre can still apply to space marines.
Love your videos and want want want more stuff like this. I really appreciate your storytelling in this, where you’re not just reciting things like a history lesson but you’re weaving a tale of what happened. Gave me round the campfire vibes and I loved it. I loved this Sudgie. While people like Bricky and Luetin (both personal favourites) delve deeply into the 'main' lore, it is you that has brought my attention to the lesser, even more unknown, details that I have somehow missed since starting in '87. And to add to that fact, I still have my original Rogue Trader rulebook and look back fondly at that drawing of a Rainbow Warrior getting shot by a Sister, and it's only just this moment it dawned on me that it was an early Sister Of Battle. Unbelievable. Thank you.
I''m not even a Warhammer fan, but I still enjoyed this because of your enthusiasm for the subject. I'll listen to you expound on Space Marines any time because you're just that into it and present the subject in a fun and non-pedantic manner!
If you want to learn more about the Angels Resplendent, the Undying Martyr and how they all fit together I can’t recommend Peter Fehervari’s work enough. The books Fire Caste and the Reverie and the short story The Crown of Thorns all have subtexts that weave together and let you piece the mystery together. It’s probably some of the most engaging fiction Black Library has right now
While I wholeheartedly recommend checking out all of Fehervaris work (he is by far my favourite 40k author), I do feel the Reverie is by itself enough to piece it together ;)
@@PavelThorsonos Eh. The Reverie sets up why the Resplendent would be willing to listen to the undying martyr. Fire Caste and the Crown of Thorns let you figure out who the martyr actually is and how he got to Canvolis. But you’re right this is an undisguised attempt to get the Arkan more exposure. My favorite subplot in the dark coil is the Arkan inadvertently getting payback on the Resplendent. The fact that the boys in gray had no idea that yeeting the creepy preacher into a swamp brought about the total ruination of everything the chapter that helped conquer their homeworld stood for is hilarious
Do a part 2! While not the most exciting color scheme (having undergone a couple revisions, including their heraldry), the Relictors have an interesting story. In fact the Eye of Terror campaign had featured them in a couple WD articles which introduced 'the mini codex', where a chapter was given special equipment to select, scenarios and even created allies for them! Based on the retcons of the Eye of Terror campaign, their fate is is a 'grey' area.
The Angels Resplendent are also part of The Dark Coil series of books by Peter Fehervari (my personal favourite Black Library author). His novel The Reverie has them as main characters, and is primarily set on their home planet of Malpertius, pre them turning into the Angels Repentant. The colour scheme however is different, being a darker shade of blue in those books. with the left pauldron fully artistically personalized by each Marine. Highly recommend picking up this book!

I'm actually surprised the Carcharodons Astra didn't make the cut but you did pick some interesting examples for sure. The Dark Krakens certainly share that horror from the depths vibe, though I'm not sure if they are as barbaric as the Space Sharks. I'd love to see that Dark Krakens deep dive.
As someone who spent his weekend painting up a squad of Dark Krakens Infernus Marines...I definitely love the idea of a Dark Krakens lore video! Captain Luceior even inspired the paint on my first Primaris Captain. Love to see that you're also a fan!
The dark krakens sound really neat. If you were doing a take on them have you considered looking into a glow in the dark paint or ink for the bioluminenscence?
Fun video and I agree with others that I would like to see a deep dive into the Dark Krakens as I like hearing about Primaris chapters. I do also have a soft spot regarding the Mortificators because they show that you can have a successor chapter that is very unlike their parent chapter culturally speaking.
😳Angels Resplendent (though art-loving and sophisticated) were very creepy and warp-tainted way before the reformation to Angels Penitent. At least, that was my impression after reading Peter Fehervari dark coil books. Anyway, thank you for the video, Louise, you're amazing:)
Louise, love your videos, this one was awesome....perhaps in a part 2 of this type of video you can discuss "The Legion of the Damned". One of my favorites. Collected many of the figures , going back to Sgt Centurius which I had traveled to Toronto to obtain during the 100th store celebration ( 1996! man, im getting old). Im sorry I didnt read all the comments, in case you already mentioned the Damned.
I feel like the Absolvers from Wrath & Glory might make a good addition to the list. The RPG books speculate that they might be Ultramarine successors, given their obsession with upholding sworn oaths. I suspect they might actually be Dark Angels, though, because they have an entire mystery cult with secret rites. So secret, in fact, that they refuse to initiate their primaris brethren into those mysteries.
Just found your channel by way of this video. 100% would love a Dark Kraken deep dive, as salamanders are by far my favorite first founding chapter. Also would love to see the difference between a new deep dive and your Rainbow Warriors video with the very pleasing advancement in your video format.
Maybe you can do lore/painting series! So a lore video like this going into some cool background and then a follow-up video when you paint up a miniature from said background!
I've already made two of those! One for rainbow warriors and then for Squats! This video was supposed to be that but there was just tooo much lore and painting to have it be just one vid
I know about all of this chapters but I still loved to hear about them all. Other strange loyal boys i can name:Fire Hawks,Flesh Eaters,Knights of Blood,Subjugators,Excoriators,Executioners,Red Talons Cannot wait for painting guide about all chapters in video
One piece of lamenter lore I found out is that there’s a Lamenter Dreadnought in a isolated Deathwatch space station that thinks his chapter is destroyed and he’s the sole living lamenter in the universe which has driven him insane and sad to which he swore to kill every alien he sees.
First off I fully agree about the children’s books! Just because those books exist doesn’t mean we don’t still get the disturbing, shockingly horrifying “adult” content that we have always known and loved! Exceptionally dark loyalist chapters are my bread and butter for favorite 40K lore. I wrote a short story about the Carcharodons attacking a remote Imperium outpost gone rogue, and I did my best to make it feel like Jason Vorhees hunting these mortal planetary defenders, because I imagine that’s what it would feel like!
Also this video’s subject is why I collect Deathwatch, I get to tell little chapter specific stories about all the various chapter recruits in my single army, and the many ways they interact, collaborate and clash! From my excommunicated Mortefactors Chaplaon-turned-blackshield Judiciar Ugrun Tash, to my by-the-book Ultramarines Watchmaster Proxo Diomedes, who personally served in the Tyrannic Wars, the Deathwatch are a bottomless source of diverse chapter storytelling and conversion opportunities!
Definitely more like this, loved it ty! I think my biggest wish for what's next would honestly be a video on everything you did for Necromunda like the absurdly incredible Van Saar STC art which to this day is still one of the greatest 40k things I've ever seen 👍
Honestly I love these kind of videos. It makes it more fun to paint them when you have back stories. Do a deep dive of them all!!! But definitely do the dark krakens. They sound awesome.
Your energy in your videos is refreshing and amazing! You deserve your climbing success 100% and I hope to see more videos from you! :) Good luck to you on your road to 500k Subs! :D
Awesome video, this highlights exactly what's so engaging about the 40k setting. I do still feel that there's a movement towards the imperium and space marines being depicted as good guys which I'm not that into, but stuff like this reminds us all how rich the lore is. Thanks
I can't state enough how nice it is to see so many of the old artworks in your video, for example the index astartes stuff and those glorious four chaos space marines from like 3rd edition codex? Appreciate it!
"For those we cherish, we die in glory!" A Vox in the Void has done some amazing fan made Lamenters videos. Man I just love Salamanders and Lamenters. Good video, can't get enough of WH40K, and the more channels the better! Subscribed!
The first video I watched from this channel. I enjoy the topic, the hostess (unsure if the channel has multiple hosts), and the terribly painted figures on the title card for each faction.
Louise, Check out the Soul Drinkers if you want another chapter for "OOPS, all Loyalist Shenanigans!" I have an entire firstborn army of them from back in the late 2000s. Also making a Primaris faction of them, as they have been brought back in novels.
Great video Louise, love your lore dives and I’m looking forward to the painting half, I think you’ve nailed a unique corner of RUclips by combining both
I'm endorsing the Dark Krakens video movement too! I knew of their heritage before but much of the rest is new to me, and with the eerie tone of this video, I wondered if that librarian or his counterparts could do something like bloodbending!
Love the video! I'd like to see more about say, the Black Dragons, the Carcharadons, the Minotaurs, and the Marines Malevolent--or any other 'dark' Loyalists. I love the Mortifactors and have had a soft spot for them ever since Watch Captain Artemis from the old Inquisitor 54mm game.
Really well done. I always like hearing about obscure facts about the various factions and groups in the 40K universe. Thank you Sister Lore Keeper. May the Emperor watch over you and yours. Great video.
Great video! Thank you, Louise! Yes to Dark Kraken! I love the sons of Vulkan, have painted my share of green and have recently started to add some black/purple cousins! Can’t wait to hear and see more of the Kraken!
I listen to 40k videos while doing cardio! I know, so Dark!!! 😂 One of the best new channels I've come across. Keep up the good work! Also, I enjoy the darkness and horror of 40k being relatively a new fan. Making my first army of White Scars!!!!
Absolutely loved this content, really fun and easy to follow and interesting to see a different perspective as well. Definitely love to see more. Thank you very much for such great videos.
Nice!! I think the horror and darkness is definitely still present in modern 40k! It is just much more hidden and deeper in the lore. Marketing and public facing lore is more tame and clean, which does make sense. Much easier to convince parents to buy their kids minis if the marketing is more palatable
The best thing about the Lamenters is you can run them in comedy games as easily as you can in serious games :p In the Deathwatch game I played in, I was a Lamenter who ended up with "...I'm ok." as my catchphrase after falling off walls, tripping over my own feet, standing on 5 mines at one and getting launched face first into a trench and throwing what I thought was a Krak grenade but was in fact a poorly labelled Vortex grenade... I was the most sensible character in this game
Even your good guy Marines are pretty terrifying. It's difficult to imagine a creation with all of it's fear (as well as other curious traits) psycho-conditioned out of them, even without considering the sheer physical murder-machines that they are. Maybe it's just my Rogue Trader bias but they are all monsters.
One thing I might point out is that a lot of these chapters are, well, older lore themselves, from before the release of Primaris marines, and their lore being generally around 10 years old.
This was awesome. I'm saving a set of Deathwatch models just to be able to paint all sorts of interesting chapters. I was already planning to do a Lamenter and a Rainbow Warrior, but the Dark Krakens I didn't know about!
Painting focused videos are always awesome, but I also love learning about aspects of the setting I don't know through lore videos. You're passionate and knowledgeable about both so I welcome both kinds of content! Plus one for the Dark Kraken deep dive by the way.

@@roguehobbies Cool, i'll make sure to check them out then :)
I know about all of this chapters but I still loved to hear about them all. Other strange loyal boys i can name:Fire Hawks,Flesh Eaters,Knights of Blood,Subjugators,Excoriators,Executioners,Red Talons
Cannot wait for painting guide about all chapters in video
Waiting for the premiere. Pretty sure it's an Angels Resplendant/Penitent video.
👀maybe...
@@roguehobbiesOh, a fellow traveler of the Coil I see.
I'd be down for more Dark Kraken lore/painting videos... :)
Exorcists always make me think of the "John Stalvern kill by demons" meme.
One piece of lamenter lore I found out is that there’s a Lamenter Dreadnought in a isolated Deathwatch space station that thinks his chapter is destroyed and he’s the sole living lamenter in the universe which has driven him insane and sad to which he swore to kill every alien he sees.
Sounds like lore from the 40k Deathwatch RPG.
@@dekai7992 nah, it's from the novel Deathwatch by Steve Parker.
@@jacklang3314 Ah, thanks!
"Hey, it's the Executioners, the emperor's angels have arriv-is he wearing a skinned face?"
**Mick Gordon's Doom soundtrack steadily getting louder**
Brilliant video, I really enjoy your enthusiasm for the 40K lore. As for the Dark Krakens… Lore video and painting video, yes please!
omg the teeny exorcist my sweet malignant boys 😂
Excellent video! Really sharp analysis of 40k. Bring on the painting tips!
Commenting to appease Algorithmnesiah
You had me at Dark Krakens. I for one am all for seeing a video solely dedicated to them. Looking forward to your future content!
You should definitely make lore videos about each of the factions! :)
I would LOVE to have a Dark Kraken lore video. I remember stumbling across their chapter image and was INSTANTLY taken with them.
I would love to see a Phobos Librarian with the cloak in bioluminescent colours as the Dark Kraken character!
I love painting and listening to your videos like this. Thank you.
I like that loyalists can eat the brains of other creatures to gain all their knowledge. Total good guy moves
Louise,
Check out the Soul Drinkers if you want another chapter for "OOPS, all Loyalist Shenanigans!"
I have an entire firstborn army of them from back in the late 2000s. Also making a Primaris faction of them, as they have been brought back in novels.
Great video Louise, love your lore dives and I’m looking forward to the painting half, I think you’ve nailed a unique corner of RUclips by combining both
Love videos about successor chapters and this one was great.part 2,yes please and thank you !
Love it! Sons of Medusa have a beautiful basic pattern but their desert camo variant is sublime!
Oooh.. Krakens....
this was a really fun video!!! Thanks for bringing some of this to the light! now to stock up on some nice dark purple paints...
Really well done. I always like hearing about obscure facts about the various factions and groups in the 40K universe. Thank you Sister Lore Keeper. May the Emperor watch over you and yours. Great video.
Yes to more of these format lore videos.
But also the Kraken stuff.
Yes. More of them indeed.
Always nice to see some love for lesser known chapters. Would definitely love to see a Dark Kraken lore video
Honestly, just deep dives into interesting chapters in general would be fantastic.
Great video! Thank you, Louise! Yes to Dark Kraken! I love the sons of Vulkan, have painted my share of green and have recently started to add some black/purple cousins! Can’t wait to hear and see more of the Kraken!
I like the talkie talkie format. I’m also curious about the Dark Kraken Chapter.
Killer video! Also, the sweet giddy giggle at the end was priceless.
I listen to 40k videos while doing cardio! I know, so Dark!!! 😂
One of the best new channels I've come across. Keep up the good work!
Also, I enjoy the darkness and horror of 40k being relatively a new fan. Making my first army of White Scars!!!!
I hadn't heard of any of these chapters before watching, awesome vid!
Glad you enjoyed!
Really appreciate this vid Lou, love lore stuff and you cover it off really well. Totes gonna knock up some Mortifactors now!
Loved the kraken subfaction love to see your take on a paint scheme, also a part 2 on this would be amazing! X
Painting focused videos are always awesome, but I also love learning about aspects of the setting I don't know through lore videos. You're passionate and knowledgeable about both so I welcome both kinds of content! Plus one for the Dark Kraken deep dive by the way.
