What if the sludge is in the pipes, I just flushed three downstairs radiators. They were all full with black sludge, when I fitted them all back up, I bled them and they all filled up with water but two are still freezing cold. Any ideas? It's my mother's house. Could the entire system be filled with sludge.
This is THE best video on radiator sludge on the whole of the internet. If it doesn't work out with Chris Evans then this guy will make the best Top Gear presenter ever
Top marks!! Had one radiator which was hot at the top and not at the bottom - took the mother off the wall, rinsed it out with a hose and put it back - now it's working a treat. Many, many thanks!!
did you see crap come out when you rinsed it ? Having the same with one of mine thats the biggest in the house have bled it , drained it , changed valve and water looked crystal clear everytime it came out.
To all those who like this technique, I plugged my cast iron radiator with a cork at one end then butted up a karcher pressure washer up to the other end... when we released the pressure washer nozzle the water ejected around 6-8 ft all black thick sludge, we repeated this process for around 20 minutes and eventually managed to get the water crystal clear, hose pipe is good for relatively new radiators however for the old fashioned 50-100 yr old radiators the trick we tried worked wonders, my Drive is still black from the stained black sludge and that was over a year ago....
The pressure build up helped release stubborn sludge which would have been more difficult to remove if the pressure build up wasn’t there, sludge is dense so hard to remove… Pressure Aided in the removal and sped up the process…
Ive found that changing hose from one side to the other and flushing both ways and also moving the radiator upright whilst flushing helps to get all the sludge out. Also whilst its off use the hose to wash all the dust and fluff of the back vanes. With thosr clean more air can travel up the back and that means more warm air in the room
You are the best Have just completed a mamont task of cleansing my bedroom rad. You little tip with turning the rad upside down worked it's magic. All done and dasted, thank you for you work on RUclips.
That tip about tilting the rad is 'ermazzing' dude. I had to take the bog, the sink and the shower out and take all the tiles up and cut the pipes to the radiator, but by-buggery did it save the water in the rad! Thanks big dude!
Just completed doing this properly on all 8 radiators in our house, none were as tiny as your one. Found the dinning room radiator is a massive 9ft long steel radiator had real struggle getting that outside to the drain/hosepipe. Did it over like 2 hours for that rad on its own switching ports and exits. Used 2x 3/4" BSP brass - hose pipe connectors to allow easier filling/guided draining but initially I had no fitting in the exit port dumped directly in the drain due to massive rust parts sludge in this 50 years old system which clearly had not inhibitor.
I tried to take a 1800x500 double rad off on my own, had no idea they would be that heavy, broke my toe. Also if you want to prevent rad sludge building up in the first place, fit a filter. It will make the system run quieter and the boiler and pump will last longer too.
I had an extension built. My builder put in a second hand, 6foot, double rad. To be fair, it looks almost brand new. I noticed that the bottom of the rad never gets hot so called him up. His answer was that large rads suffer with cold spots. I've never heard this one so bought some stuff from Wickes which is supposed to break down sludge. I disconnected the rad and drained it then flushed it but only clear water came out. I disconnected the blank plug at the top and bodged a filling solution with a small funnel etc. I then put the whole bottle of sludge buster stuff into the rad and left it overnight. Meanwhile, I installed a magna cleanse. I worked the bottom of the rad using my hammer drill and a block of wood. This seemed to produce some results as, when I drained the rad, a load of muck was released. I emptied another bottle of sludge destroyer I to the rad then connected it to the system once the pipes were nice and hot. The magnet sure got plenty of muck! But the huge rad is still cold along the bottom. I think the builder has fallen out with me over this problem as he's been nowhere near for 2 years. But which one of us is correct? I'm basing my comments on a 5ft double rad in my dining room being hot all over plus a 5ft single in my hallway.
Hi, your video was very helpful thank you. I have a question. All the rads in our house seem to be hot at the top and warm at the bottom (not cold) do you think that is still the cause of the sludge in the system? But there is one double radiator in our living room which is just very slightly warm at the top and cold at the bottom. Thank you very much!!
If you do this and its still only getting slighty warm at the top is the rad still the issue ? Have replaced TRV , balanced , bled everything and just done this and still the same.
Excellent vid great personality and clearly a good plumber. That bit re balancing is very important I`ll bet most do not do it they just turn every valve wide open.Keep it up!
I found my radiators way too heavy to lift in and out of the house - especially with my dodgy back! So I used a chemical flush and left it in for nearly a week. Drained the whole system down, then went around to each rad in turn and carefully made sure each one was drained and empty. I then connected a garden hose connector to one side and a hose to the drain valve on the other side. Flushed it out well with mains water . It came out black as ink, but almost zero sludge or black flakes. ran until water was clear - banging on the rad with a rubber mallet helped a lot (shifted more muck). Then on to the next rad! No mess, no fuss, and my poor old aching back survived for another day.

I have a 5ft that needs bleeding can i put one end in the toilet and use the sink via tube to flush? will the sludge flush through the toilet or stay in the basin?
Ive had a Potterton Boilder and 14 radiators for 18 years. A few radiators are now not heating up at all, really think we will try your video's before it's time to call 'the very expensive plumber and redoing all the system - Ill keep watching Cheers (great videos)
I did this but then after leaving the radiator to drain for a half hour I tipped it up to drain it fully & more sludge came out. Got me thinking to get a cheap bottle of vinigar & put some of that in, sloshing it about now & again, then repeat the water rinse after leaving it soaking over night?
Hi. Can be sludge in a New radiator?? Because I have New on the wall and the top is Getting warm but the bottom is cold. And the pipe on the trv Side is cold but the other Side is burning hot.
Hi. Good info. I live in a block of flats and the hot water for the rads comes in through a central boiler in the building. If I shut off the a rad, will it still be isolated or will I need to shut off the main supply in the basement? Thanks.
I did the same with one of my radiators. since I had to remove it for decorating purposes. It is an open system and after re-installing it just doesn't want to warm up except for the bottom 5 cm. That get's really hot and so is the inlet and outlet. All the other radiators have been bled, the radiators have been balanced and still it doesn't heat up. When I try to bleed it, no pressure seems to come out. Any ideas? Thanks for your great video's; I learned a lot from them.
Hi great video, I’ve removed a large radiator due to hot at the top but cold at bottom. I’ve used a hose pipe in all the entry points and tapped the side of the rad with a rubber mallet, but having put the radiator back on the wall it’s still the same, so do I continue to remove and hose pipe the rad, or do I use a cleaning fluid in the central heating or do I need a new radiator. hi can u help me I have heating and hot water probs, British gas say I need power fulsh or filter fitted I have glow worm boiler which is the best idea thanks
After flushing the rad system out with clean water then filling it with cleanser before running the boiler should you open all rad vents, i.e. TRVs and lockshields fully then run the boiler with all valve fully open or should you balance the system as the boiler circulates the cleanser.
Am I right in assuming that the right-hand radiator nut was turned away from you (clockwise) to undo it and the left-hand one was turned towards you (anti-clockwise)? It seems to be what you were doing but it's hard to see.
thank you, I found your video are very knowledgeable , I have 3 Question no1 the locksheld in which side of the radiator it should it be ? no2 when balancing the system the down stairs radiators locksheld should it be open all the way ? no3 when installing a new radiator is it a problem if it is installed up side down? much appreciated you help. l

You have to repressurise the boiler.
If you're flushing out an open vented system do you have to blank off the cold feed and expansion??
Where can I get one of those towels?

I did everything you mentioned but when I put the heating the radiator was still cold.

But... It was still super dusty. Is it okay to just spray the thing with water on the outside?
Plumberparts. How do you know if it is a feed and expantion? How do you top the water up of it isnt?

Power flush, then a filter to prevent the problem in the future.

It’s the first also. But thanks anyway.
You'll never see a better one!
What do I do if the valves either side of the radiator are not holding?

After flushing the rad system out with clean water then filling it with cleanser before running the boiler should you open all rad vents, i.e. TRVs and lockshields fully then run the boiler with all valve fully open or should you balance the system as the boiler circulates the cleanser.
+Qee Zee Yes mate!
Can u recommend how to dust inside that same size radiator? I don't want to take it off wall if I can help it.
Hi Katie, check online fir radiator dusters. They are on the market.
Am I right in assuming that the right-hand radiator nut was turned away from you (clockwise) to undo it and the left-hand one was turned towards you (anti-clockwise)? It seems to be what you were doing but it's hard to see.
How much would it cost on average to get someone in to do this for you?
Bloody brilliant videos mate, THANKYOU. Subbed 👍
