    Useful video but I have one additional tip for larger radiators.
    I took mine outside, used a hose adapter as suggested ( I keep old plumbing stuff so I managed to cobble together something)
    I did as you suggested, including the hammer. However I really want to pick it up and shake it but it was too heavy(type 22 -110cm x60cm) I placed mine on a large unopened bag of garden compost and rocked the rad back and forward whilst holding it upright and with the hose running. This generated a huge amount of sludge, which choked the outlet at time but I kept rocking it back and forward till it cleared and run clean. I turned it upside down and repeated this perhaps 2/3 times over 20 mins. I used the bag initially to prevent damage to rad, as I was draining it direct to my outside drain, but when I started rocking it along the length, loaded of sludge came out

      This is what I did with my rads recently- put them on a round 🪵 - half filled them before opening the outlet and rocked them back and forth - great way to get the gunk out

    When you have dismounted the radiator from the system did you just shut TRV and lockvalve to stop water coming from the system? Or did you drainde the water from the entire system before removing radiator?

    • @GordonNicol
      @GordonNicol 5 месяцев назад

      I just shut off TRV and lock valve. They don’t leak and does not effect other rads. You will need to top up pressure at the boiler after you refill rad

    Great video- I have a 40 year old micro bore 8mm system. It works Ok. I want to put trv’s throughout. Should I replace the Radiators or just clean them out?

    • @harunyahyadotorg
      @harunyahyadotorg 2 года назад

      40 years old is along time. 8mm is a very thin pipe.
      If it works ok, and it doesn’t bother you that much (which it seems like, since you ask the question). Just clean it out. You will see an improvement to more then ok.
      Only replace it, if it bothers you, and you are happy to pay the costs for a complete upgrade. Pipes and rads and boiler and all.

    • @harunyahyadotorg

      1. As you empty the system. Allow the water to stay on. The pressure will flush it out a bit more for you.
      Or you can 2, empty and refill and then empty.
      Or 3. You can insert sludge cleaner (1 litre tub, for ~ 100 litres / 10 rads) and leave for 1 month as a pre-dose, (preferably in the winter, when the heating will be on, 1-2 hours a day). To clean and loosen the sludge from all the radiators / pipes / contact surfaces…. ( a bit like leaving the dishes / items to soak for a bit, before washing them).
      Then after a month, empty the water from the system. Then refill with water (emptying out all the air from the rads, to wash out all the sludge once again as a rinse, then finally refill with water, and insert inhibitor 1 litre tub for 100 litres / 10 rads (as a minimum).
      I have 18 radiators in a house that I am doing, so I use 2 tubs of sludge remover, then to empty and then to rinse out, and then finally 2 tubs of inhibitor (to prevent further and faster corrosion of an old system).
      Thanks

    I assume (rightly or wrongly) you have fitted a one way water check valve in the mains water supply hose?😲😲 If not, magnetite and fithy water could be sucked backwards!

    • @harunyahyadotorg
      @harunyahyadotorg 2 года назад

      Water only flows out the mains (due to the pressure going out). Not in. What can potentially suck anything in? Nothing!

    • @tomelliott6044
      @tomelliott6044 2 года назад

      If there is any risk of this occurring then yes check valves are required by regs or yes with a depressurisation of the mains you can syphon shite back into the potable water supply... not good.

      The metal on metal contact sends more of a shock and vibration to dislodge the corrosion. Hit a rusty piece of iron with a rubber mallet and a steel hammer, yoll see the difference.

      The advantage of your system is that you can turn it upside down, the water will fill up the radiator, then through the other way.

  • @harunyahyadotorg
    @harunyahyadotorg 2 года назад +9

    1. As you empty the central heating system (radiators and pipes etc). Allow the water to stay on. The pressure will flush it out a bit more for you.
    Or you can 2, Empty and refill (periodically to increase and release the pressure) to empty the water out.
    Or 3. You can insert sludge cleaner (1 litre tub, for ~ 100 litres / 10 rads) and leave for 1 month as a pre-dose, (preferably in the winter, when the heating will be on, 1-2 or even 3 hours a day). To clean and loosen the sludge from all the radiators / pipes / contact surfaces…. ( a bit like leaving the dishes / items to soak for a bit, before washing them). The longer you soak them the better but 1 month is enough with the heating on 2 hrs a day as an example.
    Then after a month, empty the water from the system. Then refill with water (emptying out all the air from the rads, to wash out all the sludge once again as a rinse, then finally refill with water, and insert inhibitor 1 litre tub for 100 litres / 10 rads.
    I have 18 radiators in a house that I am doing, so I use 2 tubs of sludge remover, (for 1 month, heating on 70 degrees for 2 hrs a day) then intend to empty the system completely out again and then to refill and rinse out completely and then finally refill and add 2 tubs of inhibitor (to prevent further and faster corrosion of an old system). I hope it to work… let’s see… As that’s the best I can think of without pressure washing (£350, November 2021 prices) the system out.
    Thanks
