IDK how many times I'm searching for how to do something in Blender and ended up in your channel finding not just how to do it but understanding why it is like that/how it works. so I just want to say thank you!
Happy to hear that!
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome , thank you so much , all your videos are class in both content and presentation
So nice of you
Thanks, great comparison!
You’re welcome ☺️
Hello there! Do you recommend using the compositor or punchy preset? Or just export as is and fully edit later with DaVInci Resolve or similar?
Great explanations once again Wenbo ! Following questions : 1/ in the Color Management Tab, what should we select for "Display Device" and the "Sequencer" tab ? (I'm personally using an iMac Pro) - 2/ When we upload an image texture, what should we select in the "Color Space" tab ? For example, most of the time I'm importing .png or .exr images. Thank you.
how do you switch the color management in blender? I cant find the folder
Can someone provide me with goole drive download link for Agx .Basic downloand not wotking on Github ?
Your videos really inspire me, man. I want to ask you something, do you also use the products you designed in animations?
Thanks mate
Is there a way to open AGX color profile in photoshop from a multilayer OpenEXR file? or at least to apply AGX in photoshop?
Thanks Wenbo for the tip. The thing I want to ask is when I open the exported Blender exr file in Photoshop, the color profile is changed, and looked different that the Blender viewer. How can I fix this?
3:00 I think the "24 stops" for human eyes includes vision in startlight which requires about 30 minutes of adjusting. Human eye cannot see 24 stops in a single view either.
Thank you very much for the video and all the information! Do you know if the nodes of the textures have to be adjusted for AGX?, thanks for your time!
no nodes dont have to be adjusted, this just a color profile. Just like we didn't adjust when we moved from standard to filmic. You probably might want to adjust exposure in compositing or the color management panel to get it to look right.
@@rudrasingh6354 Thanks so much for the info!, greetings!!!
높은 다이나믹 레인지 = 낮은 대비 하지만 쌔끈하죠?
그래서 AGX pounchy로 디테일 챙기고 컴포지팅으로 후보정
ok agx is cool but when I want to export open exr multilayer to composite in photoshop, the color are not correct. How do you do?
Is there a way to just add the AgX settings to the original OCIO.config ( of course making backup) in Blender so that I can switch it easily between both?
Have not figured it out yet, please let me know if you do🤓
So how many stops has AGX?
I have some color transfert issue with this mode it's less accurate than using filmic especialy when i use ACES CG as texture input for my object same for linear Space of true HDRI 360 background texture as source of lightning, i understand that there is limitation with ACES and Filmic but those mode dont mess UP with my texture and color work, AGX add wierd color rebound because of so call realistic accuracy , but for me when combine with Real shot footage it's not as efficient than ACES and Filmic with ACES override .
how does everyone handle the switch? last i checked there were no combined profiles that have both filmic and the default settings in the same file config as an agx one. Problem is there are a bunch of baking functions that require the default config definitions so the AGX profile from GitHub make the scripts fail.
To prevent this we need a quick way to switch to defaults. Is it some batch file that should change environment variables?
thanks for reading and thanks for the great video. Been using agx for 2 years now
All of these are defined in the OCIO configuration file that's included with AGX, so technically, you could create a new config file that includes sections from both the original + AGX.
cool, but how did you manage to have filmic and agx both in blender? are they two different blender versions, or did you actually manage to get both color spaces? when replacing the color management files that's where i don't know how to keep both.
I don’t keep both, I just keep agx only
How about the filmic log view transform? I remember Blender Guru saying years ago that it has an insane amount of dynamic range, artificially way more than cameras or even the human eye itself.
However I never see anyone using it, nor did I ever try it myself properly.
It looks very washed out and low contrast by default, which I assume is in line with the idea that the higher the dynamic range, the lower the contrast, before post processing.
I'd love to see a follow-up video on Filmic log and maybe even on ACES!
It's interesting to see them from the perspective of a photographer
The guy who made Filmic was also the guy who made AGX, it was made to deal with the shortcomings of Filmic and also ACES. Riley brown has a 3-video series on this. AGX does better with more light intensity and tries to correctly desaturate. Checkout it out, he compares it with ARRI as well.
Will need to some research about ACES
The filmic log view is used for photography.. adobe lightwave or darktable are better used with filmic log coz it can enhance adjustments of a photo for its high dynamic range
For ex if u want to edit a frame in lightwave its better to kick it off with filmic view log
For me ACES is the way to go especialy when you work with Real video footage mix with CGI it support many camera input format and translate well with objet texture and compose with ACES CG substance Painter and designer like compositing software work well with ACES and the color transfert is painless even if you work with rgb or DCI P3 calibrate monitor AGX must have a color convert and transfert option to be that accurate in post .
Do you have any tips on how to get true white color in Blender, I've tried so many things but I can't get real white like you see in Octane or Redshift renders!
Try use add node, mix two principle BSDF shader😏
what was the format of the render did you export? EXR or Jpg for post processing?
tiff
bro was ahead of time
Please compare ACES vs Agx
I personaly use Standard profile instead of Filmic. Filmic make renders greyish and it is huge no no in my work when clients expect white labels to be white.
filmic needs more post processing works for sure
will re-rendering the AGX picture frame lose its details? I know that re-rendering multiple times with Filmic loses details unlike sRGB
I think it remains more details but you need to process it later to enhance them
@@WenboZhao thank u for the reply.. i will try it coz i liked the contrast in it
Thanks for this Wenbo.
I use EXR for post processing in photoshop but the contrast end up being way too high after opening in photoshop than render window in blender. Is there any way to solve this issue ? Have you experienced it yourself ?
are you saying your final render image is in exr format?
@@WenboZhao yes
Multilayer EXR is the best format for compositing, assuming you need to directly manipulate render passes in post. However, you still need to make sure your compositing software knows which color profile and view transform you're using. When using EXR on DaVinci Resolve for instance, I import the Blender's OCIO file which contains the filmic view transform data. I have no idea how that would work in Photoshop since I don't personally use it, but I assume you can do something along those lines
@@baldpolnareff7224 This is the thing polyfjord talked about in his tutorial for blender's exr and davinci. I tried different things in photoshop but still deals with the issue I mentioned above.
@@xDaShaanx Did you successfully import Blender's OCIO file in Photoshop?
How do you use AgX in Photoshop for compositing work?
It seems like there is no good solution for this unfortunately. Exporting png instead of exr should do the job, but even then there are differences. I've given up on color accurate work in blender. Just make it look good, export and post-produce it.
What about using ACES color management?
ACES has a lot of issues as well which AGX tries to fix.
Need to do some research
Its going to be default in blender 4.0
Please render a Image in Blender and let the Render Open in Blender. Save the Render and open it in PS. Then make both programs small so that you can see both images side by side on the monitor in the specific softwar. Take a look at the differences. Blender has a problem that the monitor ICC profile is not included in the UI. This means that you can not work color accurate in Blender because in the end the image that comes out does not match what you see in Blender. This is really not good.
This is easy to fix, with the image open in Photoshop just assign your monitor's colour profile (don't convert, assign). You will see the colours change to match what you see in Blender, from there you can convert to sRGB/AdobeRGB or whatever profile you normally use (this time convert, don't assign).

dude that was so lazy. you copy pasted the range from human eye to the 14 stop and didn't cut out the ranges inbetween so it's still 24 stops, just squished. The visual doesn't match but I think I understand what you meant
