Why a Director's Cut Can't Fix Rebel Moon

  • Zack Snyder’s latest cinematic excursion has its fair share of issues, from heavy-handed exposition to two-dimensional characters. What’s worse than all of these flaws, however, is that Netflix is milking Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire for money by utilizing Snyder’s established penchant for director’s cuts. But the failures of Rebel Moon’s regular cut cannot be hidden behind the marketing stunt that is its director’s cut, given that Snyder had full creative control over both. In this video essay, I’ll be diving deeper into that and explaining my perspective on the flaws of this dodgy philosophy.

Rebel Moon (also known as Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire) is a 2023 American epic space opera film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, based on a story Snyder conceived. Its ensemble cast features Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam and Anthony Hopkins. It is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a farming colony on the moon Veldt. Kora, a former Imperium soldier, ventures on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Imperium before they return to Veldt.
Rebel Moon had a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 15, 2023, and was released by Netflix on December 21, 2023. It received generally negative reviews.
An extended cut is set for release in early 2024, and a direct sequel, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.

No, snyders character development is putting them in a traumatic event and make them find a way to fight themselves out of it, and using slow motion to emphesise the actors acting skills to convey that trauma.
Often with ether a voice over by the character, a supporting character or an artist singing a song that literally spells out what the characters motivations or feelings are

Right? Look at other directors like Peter Jackson and James Cameron who had theatrical cuts of Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and Terminator that absolutely worked and their directors cut only added to the cinematic experience. Snyder relies on his director’s cut to fix narrative and pacing issues in his movies which tells me a lot of his storytelling skills.

Director cuts are literally something Snyder always has, similar to Ridley scott. Directors cuts didn't suddenly become something special with snyder and the snydercut, they have existed many years in hollywood.
Like superman donner cut, or james cameron director cuts, or Directors cut of godfather 3 or apocalypse now etc etc etc

@@MarkFilipAnthony you seem to be confusing the "Extended Cut" and "Director's Cut" versions of movies as the same thing. Extended Cut films are usually still under strict supervision of studio guidelines and requests - example: Despite there being 3 versions of Terminator 2, none of them are Director's Cuts, hence why James always says that he prefers the Theatrical Cut, even though we as viewers will always see the Ultimate Extended Cut to be the far superior version of that movie, but that's only because of what we know about what content we've been provided with, whereas James could have an entirely different version that only he owns and will never release. Same thing goes for Avatar - there is no Director's Cut, only an Extended Cut. And although it's better than the theatrical version, it's not what James wanted the world to see with his own true vision.
Apocalypse Now took 32 years to get a Director's Cut made which was dubbed "Apocalypse Now Redux" and took the runtime from 2 hours and 22 minutes, to 3 hours and 17 minutes.

Now, with streaming, that idea is very possible and I think it could go a long way to satisfying fans. The idea of the two versions of Rebel Moon appealed to me for that exact reason, but he needed to release both simultaneously. This is PT. 1.
Movie fans don't need a 2 hour+ waste of time intro into a new story, they need a functional movie past hour 2, if this is PT. 1 and your directors cut exceeds 4 hours you have failed as a storyteller, as this should have been a multi-part miniseries, not a movie. These character introductions were just terrible, unless the general gets a bloody 30 min tourney and like 10 more minutes on the 2 characters we saw introduced and something big on the Rebels, i don't see much improvement.... But i don't see a 4hr part 1 as in any way a good thing, this movie needed more cutting and splitting long before we get a PT. 2 and a DC PT1/PT1.5.

There are good horror movies under PG. It's both horror and appropriate for all that even without messing up the plot and it's under 2:30hr!

I also think Snyder’s approach to alternative cuts aligns with your earlier commentary about his reliance on exposition / ‘telling rather than showing’. Both give me the sense as an audience member that Snyder’s will is more important than my individual interpretation (which bugs me in any medium of art). I mean I love when artists create from a clear, specific POV but this stuff feels a step too far for me. Again, stoked you’re back making videos!

It’s an interesting risk to release a lesser version first because yes the lack of positive reception, like Justice League, could give momentum to a better version OR I’d worry more likely the better version would never materialize due to fear the the 2nd attempt would be panned by audiences as a repeated failure. I have to question where anyone finds him humble....but honestly, my issue is his whole thing is it has to always be R Rated, sexy, violent and over the top. If he's so creative, he should be able to find a way to make a movie that is compelling without having to have all 3 of those things. Also, what is always interesting about directors like Zack Snyder is they're not willing to grow and constantly rely on the same old, same old. It's just sad. If anything he should just stick to directing and leave the writing to actual writers.

I think one thing that’s worth considering is that maybe snyder is not doing two cuts in bad faith and made a genuine attempt at making a good pg13 version but failed. Im not saying that’s a good decision but without more indication of bad faith, its hard to say whether this decision was SOLELY a cash grab. IMO I think he just has a very skewed view on Directors Cut's and that on some level he believes that its kind of normal (for him at least) to have a linear and cut down version of hiss film to be released first and then release a version of his film that is, usually considered, more superior. Except that something he doesnt realise is that one of the major reasons why people prefer his Directors Cut is because their better then the theatrical version that are released.

First, let me say, I don't think Rebel Moon is dogshit. It's a thoroughly mediocre movie, but if it weren't made by the same guy who made Watchmen and 300, I don't think it would land on anyone's Top 10 Worst of 2023 lists. The problem really is that it *is* a Snyder movie, and this *is* the same guy who made 300 and Watchmen. That's why Rebel Moon is so disappointing: "Zack Snyder's take on a Star Wars movie" just *sounds* like something that should be much better than what Rebel Moon turned out to be.
I think the "director's cut" stuff is nonsense. It's an obvious ploy by Snyder *and* Netflix to double dip.
Justice League had a troubled production and everyone gave Snyder a pass because of the obvious tragic circumstances that were beyond his control. You can't make that argument with Rebel Moon. Rebel Moon was the movie he *wanted* to make. If you're saying that this is the movie you wanted to make, and that the studio didn't interfere, WTF even *is* a director's cut?
I think it comes down to one simple thing: Netflix saw a chance to make more money. Ten years from now, if Snyder is no longer working with Netflix, it might come out that the studio interfered more with Rebel Moon than he's letting on. But for right now, I'm assuming that Snyder lost his artistic integrity and just saw a chance to convince people to pay for a movie twice.

I appreciate the genuine question. Man of Steel I genuinely remember as being a good movie, but it has been ages since I've brushed up on it. Who knows how I'd feel about it now?
BvS was weird and messy in theaters, but the ultimate edition served to make a fairly more cohesive narrative. It made the movie good, at least, but not much more than that. Given my back-then love for DC, I appreciated it for what it was.
As for his Justice League... Again, it's a thing of appreciating his work for what it is. I knew I wasn't gonna be wowed with the story or his characterization of these super hero icons (I fundamentally disagree with much of how he portrays Batman but can't deny that it's badass in its own distinct way) , but I hoped for something at least acceptable, and I did get that. The real appeal of the film was its grandiosity. I liked the CGI and production design overall. It was a visual spectacle and it scratched an itch for me, that itch being "big super hero setpieces done in a darker tone with DC characters." Out of these 3 movies, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed ZSJL, and it felt good to see Snyder get a win and tell his story after the fiasco that was the original JS.

Your opinions about the movie, is a sentiment that is echoed by many others as well. Rebel Moon is a clearly flawed film. While there are aspects about the film that are interesting and at the very least entertaining, the overall issues of the film cannot be overlooked. The severe lack of character development of it's supporting characters is perhaps the biggest issue with the movie that I see. And also, personally, I'm getting sick and tired of the director's cut being hammered down every single time with Zack Snyder and at this point I don't even care who's fault it is. If the director's cut is expected to be the superior version, then release that version FIRST and let it be the only version. I'm tired of them (don't care who) putting out a half-a** product first, only then announce later on that there's a better product down the road even though we already paid to watch the half-a** product. But, that's just me.

@@QuantumFlux_22 What money has Rebel Moon made? We haven't seen the totals from Rebel Moon's preview week in theaters. Also -- I bet that most sNyDeR fans already had Netflix. Netflix had a price hike in October. Plus they have been losing subscribers over password crackdowns

@@ReggieBishop Jesus doing a little reaching for copium with those comments. It. Since you are clueless to how things work, with Netflix, views are the only thing that matters with content. And it got 23 million views in its first 3 days. Plus the way you have such disdain for "Snyder fans" You mind is already set on certain things and wont accept anything that is a positive for him or the movie so it is a waste of time explaining facts to people like you.
