The Hypocrisy of Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard broke my heart, and not for the reasons you think. Dragon Age has always been a franchise about choice and consequence; so when Bioware abandons this very principle in Veilguard, can we even still call this a Dragon Age game? Or is it just a hypocrisy-laden husk of what Dragon Age once was, a return to Thedas with none of the charm, depth, and excellence of the previous games?

Joker 2 Isn't Bad, Actually
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
Todd Philips’s Joker: Folie a Deux is apparently one of the most hated movies of the year. Everyone is criticizing it for wonky, meaningless musical elements, an aimless story, and boring execution. And while Joker 2 really is a strange movie that seemingly hates its audience, I think it has a lot of very smart themes and impressive meta commentary at play that make this Joaquin Phoenix and Lad...

After 17 years, we finally have a new Budokai Tenkaichi game: Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. But does live up to the phenomenal legacy of the Dragon Ball classics that came before? In this review, I go over EVERYTHING the game has to offer, including dissecting every individual game mode, and comparing them to Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3. #dragonballsparkingzero #sparkingzero #drago...

He Can't Keep Getting Away with It (Twilight of the Gods)

Zack Snyder just released his most Zack Snyder-y animated series yet, Netflix’s Twilight of the Gods. Zack Snyder brings his trademark violence, gore, cursing, and awkward ‘intimacy’ to Thor, Loki, Odin, and other beloved facets of Norse mythology in a story that mimics both Rebel Moon and Justice League. In this video essay, I go into how Twilight of the Gods basically fits the Snyder mold to ...
The Real Problem with House of the Dragon Season 2
Просмотров 24 тыс.3 месяца назад
People dislike season 2 of House of the Dragon because it doesn’t get into the actual meat of this Targaryen civil war, instead opting to push it onwards and onwards. As someone who has read the book (confirming that I am in fact, better than you), I think that the pacing is fine. However, I think some weird characterization choices with Rhaenyra and a few others prevent this season from being ...

The Boys: Parody and Satire in Art

I have a complicated relationship with The Boys. I like it a lot, and yet there is so much that it does that absolutely irks and cringes me to oblivion. Why Season 3 of The Bear Feels Off (No Spoilers)

Season 3 of The Bear feels very off. After the high-octane energy of the previous seasons, this one puts its whole foot on the breaks and delivers a wholly uneventful 10 episodes. But that’s not the worst of it. The Weirdness of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One is a strange entry in the already divisive Tommorowverse continuity of DC’s Animated Universe. Though it tells a decent story, it gets hung up on presentational issues which make it come off awkward and uncomfortable, with a variety of problems I will be discussing in this review. By virtue of being an adaptation of a very grandiose, very wel...

Oppenheimer & First Person POV Screenwriting

Christopher Nolan defied screenwriting norms and traditions by writing Oppenheimer in the first person point of view. What does this mean? Why did he do it? Why a Director's Cut Can't Fix Rebel Moon

Zack Snyder’s latest cinematic excursion has its fair share of issues, from heavy-handed exposition to two-dimensional characters. u lost me when u said u liked the game
I kinda disagree. I never saw any video about Veilguard before playing but when i started to play, i do felt like the conversations are childish and cringe.
i feel like an easy fix for the first warden would just to refer to him as the warden commander
as a city elf enjoyer, thank you for finally bringing up actual criticisms that i've had from a fan perspective and not like the grift channels who just cry 'broke cuz woke' who have clearly never played the series, i actually liked the game but you brought up all the criticisms i've had as well
oh my. oH. WTF. I was so excited for this game to release? and? it's such a disappointment? starting from the very launch - the game loading time was 40 freaking minuets! mind you, my pc indeed clears the recommended specs. on the second launch it was 20-ish minutes. and then, clearing the sharers folder did help with this problem, buT WAIT! THERES MORE! playing prologue became a fewer dream of epileptic person, with all flashing lights and stripped lines. after clearing the prologue this issue disappeared istg I have no idea what and why. and then I couldn't bring myself to play this game after close to 2-ish hours, I've refunded it. aND WOOO BOY! SO glad I did! Thank you for the recap. I would surely be super angry and heartbroken with what this game became and my lost money o7
They/them can't do anything good.
I do get how insulting it is to have the south of Thedas basically wiped out. I reallh do feel it too. However, I am a little sympathetic because this is a consequence of having the previous games be so open-ended. There is a reason DA games always move geographically - they simply cannot revisit old locations that we can substantially change and account for our choices. So something has got to give. Either we get something like this or we simply never visit these old locations again. I know it sucks, but the first three games are as much to blame for this for setting up the problem as Veilguard is for its, admittedly inelegant, solution.
I love Dragon Age a lot, but I just cannot bring myself to hate Veilguard. Yea the writing is questionable, it doesn't respect your previous choices, qunari look weird, et cetera. But I still had fun with it, and it's a competently made game. I honestly expected way worse. 10 years in development hell, key staff leaving BioWare, that brief period where EA wanted to make the game live service, then the name change a year before release. I was ready for a full blown disaster. But what we got was just a 6/10 DA themed fantasy game. With no DRM too, which I respect. It was clear long before release that DAV was never gonna be the glorious return to form that DA fans so desperately want. I don't know why people are so shocked. And with how angry some are, you'd think BioWare staff personally went to their home, kicked their dog and took a piss on their copy of DA:O
Shadows fall And Dragon Age is dead Steel your heart For one day soon A true Bioware game will come The wait was long Ten years in the dark Look to the sky For one day soon The Veilgaurd will be forgotten The fandom's lost And their hopes are far Keep to the stars A true Dragon Age game will come Bare your blade And raise your complaints high Stand your ground For one day soon A true Bioware game will come.
I don't know, chief. I don't see a dawn coming any time soon
The Executors are Bioware and the game developers. David Gaider said that there is a massive plot secret to Dragon Age... I think the writers are creatively bankrupt to do something stupid where the entire world of Dragon Age is really a game.
so sad, and true
32:17 I'm happy that I'm not the only one!!!! Solas has proved it, Lore has proved it. What are they? "Gods" said by everyone!!! I could make memes out of this one alone!!!
It's utterly ridiculous.
Man i had to reinstall Mass Effect one to get the horrible taste of new Bioware out of my mouth
the super opening for the intro is hard stop the cap
FUCK BIOWARE.
It was not made for us. It was made for they/them.
After replaying through the game, its actually surprsing how many times varrics fate is hinted at, everyone who does know him acts as if something more tragic happend while our character is uncomfortably casual about his death. And all the characters who never would of met him address him formally. The biggest hint is with the second inquisitor meeting when they mention solas killed someone close to them.
it's true... people who only play through it once or don't even make through their first playthrough are missing out. It becomes a lot more interesting on a second go around and you notice a lot more things when you have all the details. it really is hinted at quite a bit. on my first playthrough I could tell something was very wrong with him, but I figured it was that the lyrium dagger had weakened/poisoned him in some way and he was slowly dying, and that's why he wasn't getting better.
Fair enough, but it still doesn't justify the lack of commentary or responsivity from other important people in his life, like Harding, Morrigan, the Inquisitor, Isabela, Dorian, Mae, and so on.
@failureoncommand true... I agree. But also Rook does find out that Solas did something to them, some kinda magic manipulation to make Rook not realize the truth. Solas even admits to this. So maybe it was just a case of "selective hearing" on Rook's part and not that nobody actually mentioned it.
@feyfolken1655 exactly, that's what I said I was headcanon-ing it as in the video. That's why I was actually fine with the reveal.
How can you say its not a cope out, when the post credit scene clearly implies Loghain and Bartrand were only pawns in some greater machinations by this new BS villain group? How can you say they still fucked up if they are manipulated by all powerful beings? seriously disappointed, never gonna watch any of your stuff again, New Bioware apologist BS
I sincerely hope that this comment is satire, because otherwise, holy hell are you fucking stupid. Don't let the door hit you on the way out; better avoid any other possible injury lest it knock what little brain cells you have left in that silly little head of yours.
@@failureoncommand nice substantive reply, you really dismantled my arguments there. I guess its better to just hurl insults then try and defend your inane take. Enjoy more cringe worthy rewriting of your favorite franchise, while youre sitting in a burning house saying 'hey this cliché ridden retcon isn't all that bad'
I don't need to defend my take, or dismantle your argument, because you simply have none. I'm giving you the rhetoric you are worth, which is telling you you're stupid. You clearly didn't even finish the video, and chose to give yourself a super-wedgie over a simple difference in opinion (which doesn't even influence my overall conclusion) , and on top of that were stupid enough to think I'd give a rat's ass losing out on a viewer as dimwitted as you. Not only are you unfit for an actual argument, you are also unfit to function as an adult in the real world.
@@failureoncommand More ad hom attacks, no actual logic or argument, do you think anyone reading this exchange would look at you as a wise and reasonable person who has confidence in his analysis, or do you come off as an angry child? Meanwhile, you engaging with my comment while refusing to address anything substantive just makes you look defensive, like you know youre in the wrong and have no good comeback. if i'm so wrong and stupid, wouldn't answering me be easy? wouldn't it be much more flattering to your ego to show me i'm wrong instead of just screaming i''m wrong? who's the one acting stupid here?
@AkZeal76 yo mama
Out of all the reviews I saw and read about this game, yours is the first one that truly resonated with me, thanks to our similar relationship to the setting and the lore as a whole. You have my sincere gratitude for talking about this game in a way and adressing things many other reviews missed or simply disregarded. I am so tired of hearing all the hate about this game while only repeating the same things over and over. So thank you for that and be assured, that I and many other people share your sadness and pain. Let's carry it together.
Thank you so much. It really comes from a place of love, and thus subsequently, immeasurable disappointment.
Wonderful video I think you're giving them a little too much credit but I do understand as a dragon age fan what you're saying. And without a doubt dragon age origins got me into the series after playing Awakening I've been trying to find that experience again and haven't managed to find it. There are a few games that have come close but as far as an RPG I can't find one better, Looking forward to your next video.
Agreed; nothing quite captures the magic of OG Dragon Age. Thank you, and glad to have you along for the ride!
Does morrigan look a lot like some hater of gaming we all know and loath. 1:08.37
i'm at 1:21:35 ... varric is a dwarf , dwarfs when they die return to the stone not in the veil... and btw... how can the force of the friendship with varric save yourself from a god's prison ? about the game, i was sad that it had such a mediocre feelings about that , and then it become the failure child in my eyes when the art concept for this game are so much more intriguing and beutiful .
It's a great movie, people just wanted Arthur to be someone he never was - an "intel hero" as you called him. It's a great commentary on fans who didn't get the first movie.
It's not
Wait a second. The Evanuris started as powerful mages. They become gods. So Uldred was right in the first game? A mage is only the first step towards "something greater?" The cliche-ass villain line was RIGHT?!
I could accept losing a lot of choices at the start of the game, but losing the impact of the well of sorrows and the choice of the Divine just makes so much of that work feel empty. The abysmal writing choices sink so many promising ideas amid a solid-enough combat system through a good handful of beautiful environments.
the executors are blackrock that owns dei and isilreal.
People were disappointed that Arthur did not continue the rampage they saw in the first film. This movie was brilliantly conceived. We see the disintegration of Arthur’s Joker. Phillips is a great filmmaker. In time this movie will become a classic.
You were contradicting yourself. Claiming the tone is very dark and not light hearted and Marvel like. Yet you mention that the tension is constantly broken by light hearted dialogue and characters joking. Which absolutely IS Marvel-like.
I don't think it was so EXTREME as to fully become Marvel-like.
Pretty good video, but you lost me on the part about the companions being decently well written. I disagree highly that they are well written, and thing they are pretty bland with sub-par writing.
Agree to disagree; I thought they were at the very least acceptable. Not as deep as prior games, but decent.
This game is just woke trash. Practically worthless and no where near good enough to be called "dragon age" The game is just "the veilguard" from now on
I don't like musicals But i like this movie, I love old songs like the ones in the movie, the interpretations where great, but most importantly, I hate musicals, because they use any excuse to sing and its usually super jarring, this movie isn't, it wasn't jarring at all, not only that, the songs are REALLY important for the character development and plot of the movie, anyone watching it dubbed ot their language and not understanding the songs because they are in english, will not understand a bunch of parts of the movie. The musical parts are a complement, i don't know how to describe it, its almost as if its an anti musical because the songs aren't bad, they aren't annoying and they are greatly implemented into the plot, they don't feel "unrealistic" most of the time they happen they happen in a room where people don't join into him singing like some disney movie, they just look at him, a bunch of times it happens for real and sometimes just his head. Arthur being someone who's father figure is the tv and entertainment industry, it just makes sense that he makes up some broadway show inside his head to cope, like someone else said, some mentally ill patients draw, sing and dance to cope, and he does ALL OF THE ABOVE, he is a mentally unwell man, HOW DO YOU EXPECT HIM TO SEE REALITY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, he isn't JOKER from the COMICS, he is JOKER from the FILM JOKER, you shouldn't go into a SEQUEL of a movie that didn't follow the """""""cannon""""""" expecting to see those things in it. This is the deepest joker interpretation that we have gotten in the last like 10 years becuase he is a human, not a cartoon villian.
"I love it, but it disappointed me and broke my heart in a MILLION different ways!" Yeah, speaking of hypocrisy...
Google the word hypocrisy you dimwit
This is absolutely the best review I've seen of The Veilguard. As someone who has also lived and breathed all things Dragon Age for the last 15 years, you've summarized exactly how I feel about this new game. A fair and critical review that discusses the real problems and not the online outrage. My biggest criticism of Veilguard's story/lore is that it mostly abandons one of Dragon Age's major themes and that is Religion. The Imperial Chantry, The Qun, & the Dalish beliefs should have played a much larger role in this game. Our party has that one conversation about disproving the Chantry, but that's all we get. I also just wish we could craft who Rook is and have real dialogue choices.
Thank you so much; I really wanted it to be clear that this whole review truly comes from a place of love for the franchise. And totally, the disregard for religion really diminished from the setting and the lore.
Re: the outro Nah man, I appreciate you analyzing this game to this degree WITHOUT completely rashing & razing it to the ground. It serves as a good, more even-handed take on things to listen to, as the ears of a non-DA person. Besides, despite the past illness how much you're emotionally invested in things readily shined through
I'm really glad. Thanks a ton!
Varric had been dead from the point where they "thwarted" Solas. That. Hurt. Yet, I have not even bought the game. I do not intend to. Learning about this from others and your assessment here, which I watched and listened to throughout the whole video, makes me loathe to even go near this paving over of the series' past. It feels like they cut down a forest to make a parking lot using the hearts of those of us who kept the dreams of more to come as asphalt.
Assuming they didn't just completely lose the plot, I can only assume they're going for some meta-narrative in which Season 3 is supposed to be The Bear itself: style over substance, award-baiting, a departure from what was there before that people loved, and something that replaced the "real" and the human with pretentiousness that can only mimic and try to convince you it has heart. And that both The Bear the show and The Bear the restaurant will return to its roots for Season 4.
Damn. That would be crazy experimental. I don't know if I believe it, though.
Na it sucks totally and entirely people are so weird. You just put a name of a company or IP up and even random whoevers who had nothing to do with creating it, getting milked for money by EA and they try to convince themselves this is anything but a 0/10 garbage pile. Literally pity those people. Reminds me of the people who are going to play WoW until they are 80, actually pathetic but sad too Bioware OG devs left years ago, this isn't the same company and this game was never Dragon Age, people need to get a basic ass clue
Taash is a walking hypocratic entitled ish. Gets upset if others don't use they them but can't be bothered to do the same to the necromancer. The option to not let characters join the team should have been implemented like in Inquisition. They broke the lore of the world. DA lore, as seen from past games, is a reimagining of medieval Western Europe. Antivans are Italians. Orlesians are French renaissance. Fereldens are the English. Tevinters are Byzantine Empire/Western Roman Empire. Navarrans are Spaniards...I think. Only playable Navarran was Cassandra and the voice actor used a made up accent. The Dwarves and Qunari are the oddball Americans who don't have medieval history but are included because the devs are mostly American. And finally, the elves are clearly celts/woads/druids before Roman Imperialism. So the sudden inclusion of Asian elves threw the whole lore out the window. As an asian, I don't need to be represented in a world that never introduced Asian empires the same way Europeans don't need representation in Chinese mythology. The devs even got the aesthetics of elves wrong. Elves were lithe and petite in past games. Look at the original Solus from Inquisition and Merrill from DA2, and contrast them with the new design. Veilguard made elves humans with pointy ears. Edit: Veilguard did away with discrimination because its bad. Everyone likes everyone now. There's no orlesians discrimination of elves like in Inquisition and calling Qunari Ox-men. Your companions are immortal until cutscene deaths. They don't pull aggro nor do they have health bars like past games. They make no difference in combat as they don't even pull their own weight. They are basically walking abilities with cooldowns that have personality. Angry Joe said it best when the key to killing the gods was just throw immortal unkillable companions at them.
Great video! I had so many issues with this game but nothing made me rage more than that preachy ending. Having Varric there in the clouds and that stuff about being grateful while they fired his writer really turned my stomach.
All the OGs are gone, but yeah, it's so strange they even let go of Mary Kirby.
There’s definitely a huge gender gap in the hair model responses. Women and non-binary people think they have tons of style and flair and options. Cis guys feel disappointed because they have to dig through the options to find common patterns from real life. But that’s part of the genre, and DA is embracing the fantastic, over the top style in its presentation now more than in the past.
For christ sake you are an adult don't cry over a child's hobby
It's ok, I've only ever cried twice. Once for this game and once for yo mama
It is heartbreaking to see something you love so much grow only for it to abandon everything that made you fall in love with it in the first place
Dragon Age in 1 word: CHOICE Dragon age the Veilgaurd in 1 sentence: LACK OF CHOICE
i watched it without watching a review, and you're right, its all over the place dont make sense
As someone who doesn't really like comic books, the first movie is a masterpiece. The second is garbage.
I had the same problem with my Inquisitor's voice. Huh, I thought I just picked the wrong option while creating him, but maybe it's a bug.
Insane how you're correct in every way and you have the same opinions i do as someone in a similar situation with this franchise. Also it's very hard to find a good criticism of this game as a game and dragon age game without going in about taash or how women look too masculine in the cc. This is a breath of fresh air that was very much appreciated. I feel overall betrayed by this game more than anything. Like I spent a decade waiting for this? Good god.
Same, man. Same. And I'm glad I managed to cover your grievances.
at the end of the video you said you were disapointed with the game; frankly as a fellow fan of the games i'm not disapointed im just overwhelmingly disgusted by it. meaning i want nothing to do with this and even watching reviews/ analisys and discusions about it i find uncomfortable.
For those who don't want to read what I wrote below, tl;dr: Veilguard is unfinished and contains only a third of the original concept. For those that do: from what I learnt from another video about this game is this: the amount of concept that was in the Art of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the game only got a third of. Like, the beginning where those so-called gods got accidentally released? That was meant to lead to the third act. I don't remember all of it, but what I do remember is this: originally, you were supposed to be part of the Inquisition and under the direct command of the Inquisitor. In the first act, you are supposed to search for Solas' location and find where the elves that disappeared went off to; along the way, you are to find people and build your team. In the second act, you find Solas' and the missing elves last known location and when you go there, you discover that tensions between Tervinter and the Qunari are at a boiling point and are one push away from declaring an all-out war on each other. Through the second act, you still had to find Solas' location but have to prevent an all-out war between Tervinter and the Qunari as well and eventually learn that the whole is being orchestrated by Solas, (and your party members can betray you in this instance if you don't have a good rapport with them). The third act opens with what you see in the beginning of the game with the elven gods being freed and Solas being trapped in the Fade, and you have to stop them, and then stop Solas again. There are other things in the Art of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, such as the Hero of Fereldan showing up in the Third Act at Morrigan's request for their expertise in dealing with the Blight, (because in Inquisition they were looking into it and trying to find solutions in ignoring or outright curing it); the person who stayed behind in the Fade in Inquisition is still alive (and older due to the time difference in the Fade) and saves you when you get trapped in there and escapes with you; you have to find a way to break Solas' connection to your mind in the Fade because if you take too long, he will eventually remote kill you with Blood Magic. The Red Lyrium idol from Dragon Age 2 is actually the elven dagger we see Solas use at the beginning of the game, as he cleansed it with blood magic in the second act. The person who had been elected to become Divine in Inquisition declares an Exalted March on Solas and the elves that flocked to him once his location is discovered. And most importantly, you were supposed to have a mobile base in this game. It's a magic-powered submarine in the shape of a whale. A part of it is still in the game, though. There's a bunch of other details in the book, like one of the bad endings where Solas' succeeds in tearing down the veil, and the elves return to their original spirit forms and return to the Golden City but at the cost of the entire world being destroyed by the Blight. There is a bunch of others, but I can't remember them.
Yeah, there's a ton of cool stuff in the Art of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. I couldn't get my hands on the book, and used only the preview on Google Books, but it was still very indicative of a wholly different direction.
@@failureoncommand Yeah, like, some of Taash's early concept art was miles better than what we have now. She had more feminine porportions for example.
