    The scene that broke me was when Mora(???) explains a deeply complicated metaphysical concept to a group of about ten characters, and the music swells and the visual language tells us this is a huge revelation. The the Spanish man says, "What the fuck did she just say?" We are then trreated to a solid thirty seconds of people muttering to each other as they all translate, before they all collectively turn around and go, "GASP!"

    I liked the show but the biggest problem I had with it was the side characters. They ended up going nowhere. They gave them back stories that went nowhere. Were they even real or just NPCs in the simulation. Did their back stories happen or was it part of the simulation? If it was just the simulation it was pointless. If they were not real people just part of the simulation why give them back stories. I know some of them were in the spaceship at the end but we didn't see all of them.

    I was honestly let down by the show. As compared to Dark, 1899 is poorly written. If you pay attention you'll quickly realize that the show gets spoiled in the very first episode, and in the beginning of every episode thereafter

    • @failureoncommand
      @failureoncommand  Год назад

      Not so much spoiled as foreshadowed, which I don't really see as an issue. On the contrary, it's a must. However, I agree as far as the poor writing in spots.

    • @Madiela
      @Madiela Год назад +3

      @@failureoncommand you can call it foreshadowing, but when Adult Jonas keeps on saying "This can't be real" or when the passengers set their tea cups down simultaneously in episode 1 or The leading lady discussing with him that they may be dreaming, which by the way, was so deadright that makes me wonder if the show was rushed out bc of the success of Dark. I don't know. I'm probably being too hard on the writing but I won't be watching season 2

      @@Madiela Yeahhhhh... They were heavy-handed with it, that's for sure. I guess I just regarded it as them not really focusing on the plot-twist-y, reveal-y nature of it all (given that this type of stuff is really over-used at this point) but rather on all the other elements that set up the kinda obvious reveal.

    The video made me feel the disappointment you felt watching the series, which is great because it means I don't have to waste my time on it. You jerked us the same way I presume the show did as the motion started getting slower until it stopped and all your left with is a disappointment for what should've been a great time. How can you say they failed to utilize these identifiable characters when you haven't watched season 2 and 3 yet?
    The whole plot is planned for 3 seasons. Everything you learn about the characters in season one will become important later.

    • @failureoncommand
      @failureoncommand  Год назад +5

      While that's undeniably true, what we do have is already a whole season, and what I'm saying applies to that whole season. They failed to utilize them within the context of this first season (due to several factors I explain in the video).
      This season being just set-up doesn't give the writers allowance to not effectively utilize their characters. It may give them a pass to dial it down a notch, but not eradicate it completely. The series was chock-full of situations that could have easily allowed the characters to shine much brighter and show off their distinct personalities more clearly, but to me, the showrunners instead seemed to squander those opportunities in favor of an easier group-like approach to character writing.
      What I'm trying to say is that irrelevant of future seasons, there was much wasted opportunity here in this one. The set-up was basically there and so were several appropriate situations. The writers just chose (whether intentionally or not I do not know) to not utilize their characters to their best capacities in those situations that they already did create.

      If you watched the creator's original work with Dark, then I believe you'd find the criticism valid. Because while Dark had 3 seasons, you didn't have to wait multiple seasons to find great charter writing and story pacing, 1899 is truly a mess of itself

    Great analysis. It could be that the theme of the show doesn't play to the strength of the writers in the way that Dark did.
    SPOILERS
    Meaning, in a world of simulated events and false memories, do any of the traits the characters display matter? And why did we have to learn about their backstory in that detail, if it's fake.
    So I'm really not sure what the characters are like that we are following.
    I doubt that Jantje Friese can be a lazy writer, but I think she can fail, because the subject matter does not suit her style of story telling.
    But I do think they have great integrity in that they just went for the next story they wanted to tell. They took risks and they might fail. But ultimately they did a next step instead of sticking to Dark.
    The language the characters use is also highly suspect in that it's the language currently used in those countries. And some put that down to lazy writing. But Jantje Friese used time specific words in Dark. Now, it could all be lost in translation. Or it could be a clue.
    I also think characters understood a little too much especially in those scenes where someone speaks to all of the passengers. However we are in a simulation. Or most likely those scenes are imagined.
    I do hope she's got it figured out. But for now we don't know. And this might be the biggest flaw of season 1.

    • @failureoncommand
      @failureoncommand  Год назад +5

      Thank you so much for the articulate, detailed comment!
      SPOILERS
      I also thought a lot about those points, about why we'd learned so much about these characters if at the end of the day it was all a simulation set much further in the future. I tried to push those thoughts away, though, as despite the problems of the show, I have more faith in the writers to have a solid plan for that in future seasons.
      You've definitely pointed my attention to several factors I hadn't considered, particularly in regards to the matter of the language. Is it a clue? Or a mistake? I suppose time will tell.
      I can also appreciate the effort and the authenticity of the writers choosing to jump to a new story as opposed to milking the Dark cash cow. I also commend them for what they did as far as diversity and the multi-lingual nature of the show.
      So yeah, I completely agree with practically everything you said. I also hope that Friese has things figured out. People think that just because I critique these shows and movies, it means I'm negative or that I want them to fail, but that is quite far from the truth. I sincerely want to see art flourish and grow, especially when it's made by qualified individuals like Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, which is mostly why I nitpick and critique them in the first place.
