Husband and son are both dead , the first simulation is to get her family back ( I don't know if something went wrong or that she could always remember that this isn't real,or somehow the kid always dies ) but for the second simulation I don't know if it's for them trying to get over their pain (I think this is the case) hence why everyone in the last scene is dealing with something. But why they are in the simulation, I think it's a few things that it could be . 1 to understand the brain to ascend to a higher level ( I say this because Maura said if there's a God wouldn't that mean we're still in a simulation even if they're in the real world)" for the brother 2. To understand the brain so they possibly bring back the people they lost . 3 to make a simulation that people can live happily in or be enslaved in (Maura and then her brother )

I think the final scene of the season finale is just another "level " of the simulation where they're at, like Daniel mentioned to Maura in an early scene when he says " this was the first simulation we've created " And by the way, i don't buy the side of the story that Daniel is trying to make Maura believe in, just by the fact that she feels those memories aren't hers, so there's a plot twist maybe coming up in the future.
My theory is that the first scene of the first episode after the ship, where we see that pyramid in something that looks like other planet, it's actually the destination arrival that's on the final scene of this season..
      What do you think?
The final scene is reality or simulation?

1423 passengers + 550 crew members = 1973 - is that the „real“ year in the end? the look of the computers in Henry‘s office and of the furniture in Daniel‘s appartement and the songs all point to the seventies playing a major role in this…

I felt that same "oh no" when first watching Dark. Oh no, not time travel. Fiction never gets time travel right, they always mess up their own logic. But Dark turned out to be a masterclass in time travel storytelling. So somehow it seems fitting for them to now tackle another subject that is often messed up: Simulation stories.

I generally hate time travel as a storytelling device, because unless you don't treat it too seriously and just make fun of it (Back to the future), it's SOOO HARD to do it right and not mess it up, creating thousands of additional questions, contradictions and a general mess. No kids, just don't put time travel into your stories PLEASE, you just gonna hurt yourself. .... And then Dark enters the room, all in white, what the hell, they've actually pulled it off and done time-travel right!

The brilliance of the show is that for all of the complex rabbit holes you fall down, all of the theories you conjure and examine...none of it really matters because it's just a spaceship's Ai stimulating the brains of its passengers on a long space flight. The lighthearted note reading "may your coffee kick in before reality does" confirms this for me. It's just a simulation and there's nothing to read into it.

On the other hand the final spaceship scene could be yet another simulation ,and we are not really in 2099 but rather in 2023 or something. And just as they chose a simulation environment way back in the past ..then they could very well choose one in the/a future. I guess just like "Dark" the creators of the show will just try and go through (and tease) all these different ideas ,but hopefully (just like "dark") they will have the final scene in mind already and will have made calculations of how plot threads are supposed to go until the very end.

According to the writer they planned it for three seasons, because "they believe mysteries can best be told in three seasons". Well, they tend to basically spent one on establishing what the plot even is so going with darks seasons the second season would be escalating that concept, the third explaining all of the mysteries and a resolution.

@MasterOnion North in the end of episode 8, she says, " Will you be there when I wake up?" And he says " always" he also isn't in the last scene. In the flashback, you see them being a family in the first simulation. Not only that, he said they both created the second simulation, but nothing about the first simulation. She most likely created the first simulation to get her family back, and once the son died she they then created the 2nd simulation to make sure that he wouldn't. They are also hinting that they are not real by saying, "If that was your real son or husband, wouldn't you have feelings for them?"

I think even the revealed narrative is in doubt. Even Eyk asked how do we know that Daniel's memories are real if he is in the simulation as well. Maura repeatedly says if Eliot is her son why does she feel nothing for him. Likewise there are characters who seem unnaturally drawn to each other - Maura and Eyk, Olek and Ying Le, Jerome and Clemente, and Kester and Jose.
Maura's "father" makes a declarative statement about what a weakness emotion is and shows of this kind always fall on the side of emotion, especially love. I believe that the real narrative will be found through the love these characters have for each other.

I think the show is about lost explorers trying to find earth again. The alchemical symbol for earth is an upside down pyramid with a line drawn across it. That symbol is all over the show. Also every passenger is written a letter telling them what is lost will be found again.
Them crawling inside those dark holes represent how many times the ship(s) have entered black holes and now they are lost.
The ships main quantum computer AI needs everyone’s brain linked in a simulation to form a hive mind so that it can figure out how to navigate the black holes the ship has gone through to find a pathway home to earth. The different simulations are just the number of times the AI has tried to find that path.
I say ships because there will be a Kerberos space ship as well as a third space ship we have not been shown yet. Maybe Prometheus and Kerberos made it through one black hole while the third ship is either lost or left behind. Or maybe it’s the other way around and the third ship is the key.
The villain doesn’t want them to find earth again for what reason I have not figured out yet.
Daniel is definitely not Maura’s husband. He might be the brother and the captain is the husband. Or Daniel might be the AI represented as the father/husband/child
Or maybe the space ships are just the next simulation 🤣
I need season 2, need to know what happens.

What if the memories, which we see the characters enter, really happened in the "correct" time (so, somewhere between 2050 to 2099 for example) and the simulation took those memories and traumas, and put it into the context of 1899.
For example, the Captain's wife and kids were burned in the old country home. But maybe, and this is just maybe, what really happened was, that they were actually burned, but in a way that would make no sense to a person in 1899. For example, dying in bomb or nuclear fire, being on a spaceship which gets trapped in the suns orbit and falls into it, some other technology which equates to "dying in flame".
Just an idea! But it would mean that all those memories we got to see are true memories recontextualized by the simulation. And so they ultimately matter to the story moving forward.

I do think that the ones paired together have real life connections and their traumas are all real to some degree and the reason why they wanted to forget their real lifes. With most of them that works somewhat easily enough you just need to change the setting they occur in.

Another great video pete. The final shot of episode 2 gave it away for me, I kept saying please dont let this be another simulation twist, and I was at first let down when it was. Episode 5 confirmed it for me when the tunel to the mental hospital was revealed,.I mean doors opening in mid air, how could it not be. But then the simulation twist wasn't confirmed until the later episodes, but it came as no suprise at all. It defo didn't hold all the suprise twists like dark. I can still remember my jaw hitting the floor when the stranger revealed himself as Jonas, but 1899 never gave me that o-m-g moment that could match it, or any of the other twists from dark.... after leaving it a couple of days to let this show sink in, I like it more, the more I think about it, but the ending just reminds me of DARK CITY 1998. Im guessing that season 2 will be called 2099 which is the name of the simulation code that they're now trapped in. Yes I think they are still in another level of the simulation "a glitch in the matrix" with the space ship being the replacement for the steam ship. Maybe we wont see the real world until the end of season 3 just like in dark, maybe the real year is 1999 right in the middle, the year the matrix was released? Who knows. Lets just hope that they're all not players in an online virtual video game. Look forward to more videos on the small details and I definitely think this show deserves a second watch.

Thank you for being the only person in the comments section so far who has brought up Dark City which I consider one of the most underrated films of all time. I just binge watched all of 1899 and I felt like this show was trying really hard to capture the ambiance of Dark City but it failed because it was too drawn out and trying too hard to keep things mysterious. We didn't really learn much about any of the characters for all the time spent with them...all we know is their "past" trauma which may not even be real. As soon as they mentioned simulations I couldn't help but think of The Matrix, and was annoyed by a lot of similarities to the Matrix franchise such as Plato's allegory, the White Rabbit, Black vs White injection instead of red pill vs blue pill, destructive corruption in the program (In Matrix franchise it was embodied by Agent Smith) and Maura's father being very similar to The Architect character. There was also the same kind of revelation that the simulation has been looping endlessly and nobody has been able to break out of it, but love might finally break the loop. I probably need to watch it again, but there were many points where I got impatient with filler. Like they revisit places multiple times and don't do anything. Or they start off in one place, then run off and get turned around, something ineffectual happens and they come right back to where they started and none of this moves the story forward at all. The passengers turning into zombies and throwing themselves off the ship was a completely obvious and clunky plot device to whittle the story down to our main players. At first the corruption seems to be threatening everyone and they use it as a way to have an excuse for a chase scene towards the end, but then suddenly it's not a danger any more. And if it's a simulation, how is there even access to the computer system within the simulation? How do we even know that the "computer" was real, or that the sim was "reprogrammed" at all? In conclusion I felt that this season was weak. If it was all just a setup for future seasons, that honestly makes it even worse because it shouldn't take 8 hours to set up a premise. Maybe I am just spoiled because I watch a lot of Star Trek, and they've had countless episodes that explore virtual realities, the holodeck, dreaming while trapped inside a stasis chamber, etc and they can manage to explore the subject quite profoundly within the constraints of an hour long show.

1899’s ending reminded me a bit of the brilliant but unfinished ending of the Netflix series the OA starring Brit Marling, Emory Cohen and Jason Isaacs with the reality jumping. I don’t think it would mean that when all the others will be woken up, it will essentially nullify the plot happens before. Because what they went through in the simulation can overflow into the reality, and can bring changes in the dynamics between the characters. Maura said in the series that the memories of all the characters in the simulation are connected, but as to why they all speak in different languages and are unable to communicate with each other, I thought of a quote of Anna Karenina: All happy families are alike, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. My theory is that the same applies to the characters, because all their miseries are not interconnected, thus can’t be expressed in words or speech, and that’s why they are all speaking different languages

At 8:04 we see a device used to hack and control aspects of the simulation. Its a steampunk style version of the 15 puzzle which apparently was invented and marketed around the 1880's.
*It's a derivative of the jigsaw puzzle because the goal is to display the proper picture with each piece in its proper place.
*In video game versions the final 16th piece appears when the puzzle is solved, like the way the boy appears perhaps?
*Half of the puzzle starting points are impossible to resolve.
*Reference points of number position placements allow the player to know if the current positions permit solvability or not.
    *Solutions range from 0-80 moves.
*"God's algorithm" is an optimal solution via the fewest possible moves, presuming an omniscient God could calculate such a configuration.
*And, if looking at the cast of characters for the show there are 16 of them, one for every space on the puzzle board.

The longer it went the more frustrated me. I love a good mystery show and Dark was one of the best ones I've ever seen - but 1899 is so afraid to reveal *aynthing* that it keeps its cards so close to its chest that even by the end of this season basic foundations of the narrative are vague and unclear - which results into many of the twists and events having no emotional impact. If this show doesn't get picked up for a second season then all we got were 8 episodes of nothing but teases that amount to very little.

Of course, Matrix Revolutions proved this theory wrong, and I was massively disappointed, but I'm wondering if that's what's going on here- 2099 is just another layer of the simulation and future seasons will give us 2199, 3099, 4099, etc.

The computer that Daniel programs in episode 8 and drives down from the hatch in the ceiling in the machine room is a quantum computer - they look like this. They can calculate different realities simultaneously in the superposition. For long space journeys, it is assumed that it is best to put the crew into a twilight state (dream state) - in other words, into a kind of simulation, because otherwise they would not be able to endure the long journey mentally, and quantum computers might be suitable for calculating the dream state in real time. But then ethical questions arise, i.e. what is real and what is simulated. Perhaps the quantum computer does not transmit correctly and always has to be restarted or has not switched off in time. One detail: The coordinates of the ship Prometheus correspond almost exactly to the coordinates on the spaceship.

I think we arrived in 2099 and the next Season will be called that! So I think it will just be another Simulation! So where does the Simluation lead after that? I think I have it! There is some Music in the show that doesn't fit the 1899 or 2099 timeline... but it would fit right into the 70ies of the 19th century hence 1999! (Someone grewing up with them would be 20-30 in 1999) So I think it will ultimately end in a triology, making 1999 the last season!
    The Song examples:
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 1967
Child in Time -Deep Purple 1969
Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen 1984
The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult 1976
The Wizard - Black Sabbath 1970
Adding on top of that! the episode names are so vague! I wonder if the episode names just repeat with a different meaning! I mean in the first Episode of Season 2 we will start again with "The Ship", because we are on a Spaceship! So maybe in Season 3 1999 we will Land of a Modern Boat (or a flying ship?) on the Ocean again!

I think the point of the ship loop is to push humanity to evolve to make decisions out of logic and not emotion. Potentially emotion (love, hate, anger, jealousy…etc) is what pushed humanity to its downfall and now as they all travel to another planet, the ultimate goal is to evolve humanity away from that by changing how we think, perceive, and respond to the situations we are faced with. Maybe the only way out of the simulation is to make the correct decision and sink the ship, as they are told to do. This is the ultimate logical decision free of emotion. Henry says our emotions are what hold us back. I think it’s all a big experiment for humans to be better than we were before, and those who succeed can move on and colonize a new livable planet and not destroy it like we did earth.

I thought the main twist was actually when we realise the true creator of the simulation (near the end of ep 8). In general it all being a 'simulation' wasn't very shocking & it's not particularly original, however that doesn't mean the writers can't offer a unique take on it much like they did with time travel with Dark. Maura wakes up on a ship with a message from her brother and it's the 19th even though in the simulation there have already several days passed since then meaning no time passed or the simulation is for some reason two hundred years ago but like eight days later. A space ship in the middle of nowhere just like a steamship out on the ocean when communication technology was limited is basically the kind of walled of surrounding where a very limited space can be used to fake an entire world, because nobody questions why they can't leave or call someone. There's some significance to these songs, but I'm not sure what. As some have mentioned, the songs are of a similar era, but The Killing Moon came out in 1984. There has to be something behind their release year though. Perhaps the songs and episode titles have some tie together? Assuming this is a simulation or altered reality, are these dates tied to the characters actual reality? Birth dates, death dates?? This is definitely something about this show worthy of a deeper dive. So many questions. How do these tie together?

I also think there's some significance to her being somewhat drawn to the Captain. Daniel is claiming to be her husband but she doesn't seem to think he is. It could be a construct of one of the simulations. The Captain was dreaming of losing his family, perhaps Maura is actually his wife and they have been torn apart in this. Notice too how Daniel quickly sent the Captain to the Prometheus when he was with Maura and she was seemingly about to get to the bottom of it all with him at the asylum.

The main difference from Dark is that I don't have the same eager to see the next season as I had after the first season of Dark. Maybe because I don't feel attached to any of the character in 1899 yet

I think Cairan is an AI simulation of her dead brother, created by her father and is "doing a HAL 9000" on the crew of the spaceship.

Really hate watched this to the end. At least Dark City and Thirteenth Floor were 90 minutes when they did these plots 23 years ago. White rabbit intro really played out.

The name of the show "1899" doesn't refer to 1899 the year... It's the last scene.. day 18 of the year 99 (2099)

Just finished watching & immediately came to your page to hear your take on things. You are my 1st & favorite go to for series analysis!! Always appreciate your commentary Pete. As far as the show, I felt it dragged & the payoff was disappointing. Loved Dark & expected more with 1899.

Just hoping thing don't fall apart with 1899 the way they did in Dark season 3.

Good, but , like Lost, it's waaaay too long. As for Dark, I got bored and didn't watch it 'til the end.

lol they made a season with a cliffhanger that will hopefully win them a 2nd season... I kinda wished there was more explanation for season one and not making us wait to see if they make a 2nd..

The spaceship could be a time machine that went back to retrieve living humans from the past, in order to repopulate the dead world of the future.

The ending leaves a real bad taste in my mouth. I love scifi but this felt like a twist that removed from story without adding to it. I have some faith in what a season two can do but still.

These kinds of shows should never be on Netflix. They are too fickle with their shows.

That show was painfully awful. Had to fast forward through the last couple episodes just to get to the end and get it over with.
