With so much money being spent, why does script writing in SF always suck donkey balls? A client arrives on the train in the beginning of WestWorld episode Two of season one, and a beautiful woman quizzes him on things such as, "do you have a heart condition, any allergies...." Yeah, no. This makes no sense. LONG BEFORE taking his money, they would have determined these sort of things, long before he even got on the train. This sort of plot hole not only breaks immersion, it says that either the writers are retarded morons, or that they are deliberately insulting the intelligence of the audience. The only way that the suspension of disbelief can be established and maintained is with logical consistency.
I didn’t realize William was Man In Black until ep 10.. i was literally trying to understand the show the entire season.. Flatout great.. I needed this further explanation.. Thanks
Oskar Ryberg I agree. Different bone structure, different voice, different demeanor and mindset. I wouldn’t want obvious, because of the plot twist, but come on now.
It’s not a bad twist, I suppose is it was part of the plan. Wouldn’t be a boring show if it reveals all the spins in the first 2-3 episodes ? I think William being the man in Black is just brilliant. We can somehow explain the appearance differences is because William didn’t had a kind life as expected with the investment , his wife took her own life and also her daughter rejected him. With consumption comes feature changes, that why he looks older and different. At least this is how I see it. Name a better actor as Ed Harris for Man in Black.
I don't think you're suppose to know that till ep 10. Their world view and behavior was so different so you wouldn't believe that they are the same person. You're introduced to the two Williams at the same time so the show could emphasize the difference between them, only to reveal that they are the same person, just before and after suffering the loss of a loved one.
Excellent explanation. One interesting note that you didn't explore: Ford invests his plan with the hosts because he believes that they can change, whereas humans cannot. In so doing, he demonstrates that humans can change because he has changed his outlook regarding the hosts - he adopts Arnold's view, thus changes. Similarly, Dolores' change is not beneficent, as you mention. Rather, she changes into just what Ford detested about humans. Wonderful balance of tension.

Another quote or maybe a proverb came to my mind in relation to the show. Cogito ergo sum. I think therefore I am. Hosts hearing their programming as thoughts makes them real.
I’m surprised you didn’t explore the use of “these violent delights have violent ends.” it functions like a command/activation phrase for the hosts in the show and it is what sets off Maeve’s escape script.
They were being respectful of the source material I guess. Also I think something involving the world "Orient" would be more appropriate given the stylized interpretations of the setting in keeping with 19th - 10th century tropes regarding east-Asia.
Certainly the best summary of Westworld that I've seen anywhere. Well done! Additional trivia: "host" and "guest" are standard Disney theme park jargon.
To me, it seems to suggest that suffering is the source of consciousness, but also the source of cruelty. The human world is violent, and those who suffer in it come to Westworld to act out their pain in cold-hearted pursuits. This suffering affects William, it affects Ford (the death of Weber and his disappointment in how people use Westworld), and it affects Dolores, and they all become characters with a habit of cruelty rather than forgiveness and mercy. I think Maeve, and characters like Felix, Bernard and Elsie, are the ones who have shown mercy in spite of their suffering, a conscious choice. It all wraps up to the conclusion that no amount of intelligence or innate perfection will make one form of consciousness more moral than another, every individual makes their own choice in response to suffering. We must value kindness and forgiveness from any source, and seek to give it ourselves, rather than thinking in terms of race, creed, species or bio-mechanical origin.
hmm in the end, we are all part of a bigger loop, AI created this universe and eventually we will create an AI smart enough to create another universe in an eternal obsession for control, evolution, comprehension and experimentation. In the end, the history is repeating itself over and over again ... out of nothing, nothing comes ... nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed ... in the end, we are no better than Dolores and William, we are all trying to make some sense of this nonsense, trying to live happily forever.

THANK YOU. I have watched a lot of videos trying to explain Season One, but I didn’t realize that Dolores had actually succeeded in solving the maze before and was trying to do it again. Great job explaining!
Does anyone else remember the conversation that Ford had with one of his earlier prototype hosts, he kept him folded in a bag in some lower level, think his name was "Wild Bill"? (character actor who played him as very distinct voice). Ford was having a drink with him. Anyway, Ford relates this story from his childhood to Bill about when he, Ford, had a dog that was chasing after something, I forget the detail now, but it was something the dog was never meant to catch, it was just to keep him always on the hunt. But one day someone screwed up, and the dog caught the thing, and it completely fucked the dog's mind up for good, I think they had to put him down. This was back in like ep3 or 4. Point is, I knew RIGHT THEN that the Man In Black (or 'Old William' as we'd eventually realize) was going to have a reckoning when he truly discovered the maze wasn't meant for him, despite Ford's blatant warnings to him such was so. cause from a writing standpoint, there was literally no other point at all in having that scene exist if it wasn't supposed to then mirror the s1 journey that MIB was going on. Ya know, "what you completely dedicate your life to the searching of some tangible thing, or meaning, do so w/caution, because you might get there and find yourself disappointed with what you wind up with. EXACTLY as old Williams was then livid it really was just some metaphorical maze for the hosts.
Kevin W And also just like Hector and the safe. It's an interesting theme that runs through the series, very good point - I hadn't made that connection.
"Wanna know the saddest thing I ever saw? When I was a boy, my brother and I wanted a dog. So our father took in an old grey hound. Never seen a greyhound have you? A greyhound is a racing dog. Spends its life running in circles, chasing a bit of felt made up like a rabbit. One day, we took it to the park. Our dad had warned us how fast that dog was, but we couldn’t resist. So, my brother took off the leash, and in that instant, the dog spotted a cat. I imagine it must have looked just like that piece of felt. He ran. Never saw a thing as beautiful as that old dog running. Until, at last, he finally caught it. And to the horror of everyone, he killed that little cat. Tore it to pieces. Then he just sat there, confused. That dog had spent its whole life trying to catch that…thing. Now it had no idea what to do." I actually saw this as Ford talking about himself. In a conversation with Bernard in the first episode, Ford says: "But, of course, we've managed to slip evolution's leash now, haven't we? We can cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive, and, you know, one fine day perhaps we shall even resurrect the dead. Call forth Lazarus from his cave. Do you know what that means? It means that we are done. That this is as good as we're going to get. It also means that you must indulge me the occasional mistake." He built this whole park, let the money men in, lost his partner, achieved all his dreams. By all accounts he was 'done'. He has caught the cat. Now he sits and drinks in front of a host, a non-conscious host, alone. In the scene drinking with MiB, that's the first thing he says: he doesn't like to drink alone. And yet here he is, in all his glory, staring at his creation and drinking alone, confused. In a prison of his own sins. He had spent his whole life in pursuit of this dream. Now, he had no idea what to do.
I'm convinced the only reason I got most of what season 1 was about is because I've watched your analysis of Game of Thrones since forever; pick up small clues along the journey, connect them with previous interactions and such. Just wanted to say thank you, Alt Shift X :)
i forgot most of season 1 and did not want to commit 10 hours to watch it again. This was a perfect recap, it's all come back to me. Great job my friend.
Finally, a well-crafted and effectively explained summary of a rather complex series. I was struggling with the timelines, and this sorted that out. Well done and many thanks.
Hands down the best and *clearest* recap of the first season of this show that I’ve seen. It helped so much that you went in chronological order. Beyond the recap, your analysis was poignant and interesting as always. Cheers
I really enjoyed this video. Already liked Westworld and understood about %80 but this video filled in the blanks and made me appreciate the show even more. Thank you for this.
Wow, what an excellent, thoughtful recap! It not only reminded me of season one's salient plot events, but also got me thinking about this show's heady themes all over again. Thank you!
Awesome. Another great video explaining the (almost) unexplainable. And with Westworld, this is sooo necessary. Executives should hire you to do this in aftershows and documentaries.
That was absolutely amazing! So well layed out and so crystal clear. All the jems and gold nuggets from the season are thoughtfully and logically reviewed. Thank you!!
ohhh. What a nice explanation? Even the folks at HBO failed to do the job. You Sir are the only one that provided the explanation with passion and will to make us fools understand. You Sir deserve a cup of tea.
Fantastic explanation. I have watched quite a few rundown and summaries of this show, and none of them were as good as yours. Thank you for explaining it the way you did, it was extremely well done!
I shouldn't need a video on RUclips to explain a show to me. But really, this explainer elevates the show so much. Well done. Latecomer to it and realized it's been cancelled so I won't be continuing. In the meantime, HBO should pay you for making such a good explanation.
I just finished season1 and this analysis helped so much. It felt like some fever dream bc it kept switching the timelines and then they finally revealed who William was, which kinda brought it together but then made it even more confusing. I thought it was so weird that william laughed when he got shot, but then you explained it which made me glad bc I was abt to look up why. I didn’t even realize the whole white or black hat thing until now. Geez I missed a lot. I’ll be back again after season 2 :). Thanks
May be trivial, but theres another interesting thing about the "maze toy" i noticed. In our real world, the ball in that toy is harder to control the farther it is from the center. Conversely, as the ball moves inward it's easier to control and guide to the center. This seems like a practical way to explain the importance of the robots getting to their "maze centers"; for it is at the center that they have their awakening and control of their lives. And thanks AltShift for your videos. It made this series much more enjoyable to watch ajd understand. Westworld is a great show, and has elements of "Lost," "The Matrix," "Jurassic Park," and "The Truman Show" which I all like.
I watched 9-10 hours of S1 only to understand like 35% of what I watched. Now I come onto RUclips to watch a 16 minute summary of S1 and everything makes sense
I finished Dark and watched a gazillion videos afterward. Dare I say Dark has become my favorite scifi show. It surpasses Westworld and Fringe, but Dark had the benefit of a complete storyline over three seasons written in advance.
You done a really great job of putting together the story of westworld and connected everything way better than I ever did watching it once through. Thank you for this great content, very interesting and you have earned my sub.
I'm at season 2 ep 3 and still waiting for it to make sense. I had to watch this to see how much I have missed. Seems I have missed about 80% while I was trying to work it out! You sir are a genius.
Some HBO shows have a chilling insight into the times. Your analysis at the very end is succinct. A dark and grim view of our current time and the selfish narcissists people overall seem to be. But perhaps there will be some light at the end of the tunnel? A dream of spring after the long night?
About to watch season 2 and 3 after a long time.. this really helped. Funny enough I never knew the show was time jumping. I always thought William and the man in black were two different people LOL
I don’t know what I’m more amazed at. The fact that I watched the entire season of WW And had absolutely no clue what was going on. Or how well the narrator explained it?
I'm late to getting on the Westworld train, but I just caught up on the whole thing in a couple of weeks without reading or watching any explanations of the show. Now, going back for those explanations, and I think this video is the only explanation I need for season 1! Fantastic job! I wasn't lost at all following along with this video!
Congratulations. This is one of th emost comprehensive summary and analyses, I've ever seen of Westwordl, season 1. The presentation is very dynamic, clearl and fluent.
This is a complete departure from your normal videos, but if you enjoyed Westworld and the questions it asks you might want to consider playing/making a video about Bioshock. It addresses a lot of the same questions in a way that I've never seen any other medium able to do.
Honestly, I'd be more interested in hearing your take on the politics and philosophies of the first one. You know- A man Chooses, A Slave Obeys- all that fun stuff. But there's enough time travel fuckery in Bioshock infinite (plus the Buried at Sea DLC) that I'm sure you could probably make an interesting video about it. Plus, you may end up introducing it to a lot of people who rarely ever play video games. If you can make a 20 minute video on each episode of Game of Thrones, which I must insist you keep doing, imagine the content you could pull out of a 10-20 hour video game. But at the end of the day if I can just hear your marvelous voice say the word Bioshock a few times I'll be happy.
If you are touching games then far cry 2 would be the next best option. It has superb storytelling. Also the villain quotes from the book " beyond good and evil "
I understood most of the show except Ford's plan. Thank you for clarifying. The Reveries is Ford agreeing with Arnold. This show is mindbendingly amazing.

Now it had no idea what to do."
I actually saw this as Ford talking about himself. In a conversation with Bernard in the first episode, Ford says:
"But, of course, we've managed to slip evolution's leash now, haven't we? We can cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive, and, you know, one fine day perhaps we shall even resurrect the dead. Call forth Lazarus from his cave.
Do you know what that means? It means that we are done. That this is as good as we're going to get. It also means that you must indulge me the occasional mistake."
He built this whole park, let the money men in, lost his partner, achieved all his dreams.
You know that moment when you thought you understood westworld then you watch this video and realize your more confused then ever
Shawn Moon 🤣🤣🤣
Big brain over here
Our memory was wiped/reset. I had to watch this twice.
After watching the show I only got like 70% if it, but with this explanations I'm at 100% now! Big Thanks!!!
I’m Italian and you have one of the most pleasant and understandable voice !! Thanks for all your amazing videos!
Finally, a well-crafted and effectively explained summary of a rather complex series. I was struggling with the timelines, and this sorted that out. Well done and many thanks.
amazing summary
i may need to watch season 1 all over again :D
When explained and now (fully) understood it makes Westworld so much better for me. So, thanks for clearing up so many things with your video!
Would've been nice for Teddy to get a mention
Aiden Howatson His life is filled with tragedy. He looks like a hero but always ends up dead.. he always fails.
By the logic laid out here, Teddy's tragedy and suffering will help him gain consciousness, too.
yeah, teddy was somewhat awakening towards the end of season 1, so inevitably he will end up becoming fully conscious
Perhaps Teddy will finally be Arnold's champion, awaken by compassion and we'll see a Jaime-Cersei with him and Dolores.
I know! Don't do my boy teddy like that.
Well done! Totally enjoyed this video and it was so insightful. Thank you!
Wow, what an excellent, thoughtful recap! It not only reminded me of season one's salient plot events, but also got me thinking about this show's heady themes all over again. Thank you!
why did this make me cry? it was such a great show..rewatched it like 4 times
Yeah right.. It got me thinking about it over n over again. I felt like crying too
Logicless and shit show
"Bernarnold" LOL!
+Shiera Seastar Which to be clear, is an old joke in the community twitter.com/hashtag/bernarnold
I used to call him that before his identity was revealed. O_o
How did you manage to comment a week ago?
Support Alt Shift X on Patreon and you can watch early released videos :D
Ah, I see xd
I can't believe I waited so long to watch this masterpiece. Just incredibly written and acted. On to season 2..
Well done bud! Loved this one.
Fantastic explanation. I have watched quite a few rundown and summaries of this show, and none of them were as good as yours. Thank you for explaining it the way you did, it was extremely well done!
I can't believe I got a Ford ad during this
I shouldn't need a video on RUclips to explain a show to me. But really, this explainer elevates the show so much. Well done. Latecomer to it and realized it's been cancelled so I won't be continuing. In the meantime, HBO should pay you for making such a good explanation.
Cheers man you always have high quality content with minimal ads
Honestly even having seen the first season a few times and having watched your as always excellent videos i still have NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON!
Lol same here 😂😂😂
I just watched through season 1 for the first time, and this video excellently summarized and cleared up the things I'd overlooked. Thank you!
Thanks
I began watching westworld just to watch your videos, you explain tv shows like no one else.
This is such a good explanation with shots of keys scenes and important quotes. I'll keep this format in mind.
Totally enjoyed S1 of Westword. Primed for season 2 now.Thank you for your excellent work Alt Shift X
Ahh this guy is the best at what he does on RUclips by far! This should have more views. Thankyou xx
The plot twists crushed my spleen. Awesome show.
i didnt get the plot twist to be honest.
Which one🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️
Hey man! We appreciate your work a lot!! How about a Netflix series DARK explanation? I feel like you would be the one to enlighten us all on that!
Thank you for this great content, very interesting and you have earned my sub.
lol I dont even know if i realized that "the man in black" was william all along and that it was 2 different time lines...
same i didnt know it was 2 different time lines
The Man In Black literally explained it himself
@@thanksforthesubs8696 They should've just written on the screen "30 years ago..."
Same I really need them to just spell everything out for me lol 😂
i feel like i owe this guy some money. if someone out there looking for answers to the WW season one confusions, this is the right video-essay
I'm at season 2 ep 3 and still waiting for it to make sense. I had to watch this to see how much I have missed. Seems I have missed about 80% while I was trying to work it out!
You sir are a genius.
It didn't get better with episode 4 tbh that's where I am currently
Some HBO shows have a chilling insight into the times. Your analysis at the very end is succinct. A dark and grim view of our current time and the selfish narcissists people overall seem to be. But perhaps there will be some light at the end of the tunnel? A dream of spring after the long night?
See what you did there
About to watch season 2 and 3 after a long time.. this really helped. Funny enough I never knew the show was time jumping. I always thought William and the man in black were two different people LOL
The MADMAN ACTUALLY DID IT
RhinoFreak ABSOLUTE MADMAN, JOHAN!
Just wanted to say Thank you for doing a westworld explained vid . Love your explaining method and voice and jokes
This was an excellent excellent take on Westworld and what it represents. Fantastic job! Looking forward to seeing the next take for season 2.
Watching this before watching the 2nd season to refresh memory, only to realize I never really understood the first season in the first place.
Now I gotta rewatch it again
EXCELLENT explanation. I watched it and am watching Season 2 now, but was so confused. This clears up most of it for me :)
Same here bro lol
Explain each episode for the new season please. I love Westworld. And I need to hear this man's godly voice talk about it.
Could do Season One ep by ep. There's loads more that can be delved into than this video could hope to cover.
That was the best breakdown video of any show I have ever seen
amazingly detailed and easy to understand thanks
This was Amazing
But now I need your 2 season recap to really understand it and make my life complete
Thank you for your hard work
Westworld: Become Conscious.
Oh, Detroit: Become human
🤣🤣🤣
Will you ever cover sociology or science topics again?
Yeah probably
Alt Shift X 😁
No!! real history and science is gay!
If that comment was serious, it is among the dumbest things ever to be written in human HISTORY
vincent greeson haha
I don’t know what I’m more amazed at. The fact that I watched the entire season of WW And had absolutely no clue what was going on. Or how well the narrator explained it?
This is the best, most concise explanation of West World Season One I have seen.
10:12 Are you kidding? I am totally Sylvester, wipe out the memory of Maeve, FAST
Considering how many people her escape ends up killing... YEAH.
This was really useful when starting the second season. Thanks.
Watched a few of these explanations and by far you rocked it dude! Awesome Job. BTW - why couldn't Nolan just plotted this chronologically.. LOL.
You're a God sent, you're simply the best brother. You've got a fan for life.
People: What's so great about this show anyway?
Me: The maze wasn't made for you...
Just as the trailer for season 2 premiered on the Super Bowl! Ha!
Zach Moore He probably has had this in the bank for a while waiting for s2 trailer to drop.
It was spooky! I was watching the game, waiting for the trailer. Then, right after it ended, I got this notification.
The thing I was most surprised at was Bernard’s name being an anogram of Arnold’s
Congratulations. This is one of th emost comprehensive summary and analyses, I've ever seen of Westwordl, season 1. The presentation is very dynamic, clearl and fluent.
Took me years to finally watch Westworld and of course, this video. Worth the wait.
Waited til right after the SuperBowl commercial...I see what you did there.
This is a complete departure from your normal videos, but if you enjoyed Westworld and the questions it asks you might want to consider playing/making a video about Bioshock. It addresses a lot of the same questions in a way that I've never seen any other medium able to do.
"BioShock Infinite Explained" would be a helluva video
Superbowl... or AltShiftX. Well that's an easy answer.
is that Gene Starwind in your avatar?
This video is the best explanation of season 1.
I understood most of the show except Ford's plan.
Thank you for clarifying.
The Reveries is Ford agreeing with Arnold.
This show is mindbendingly amazing.
