I also use mine exclusively as a hardware unit. I don't use the TI aspect. It cracks me up when people bag on that aspect, as if you can't use it as the amazing synth that it is. On multi-timbrality: the fact that you can have 16 separate parts running simultaneously, each with independent effects chains blows my mind. PLUS the highly sculptable 3band EQ and manipulation of stereo field per part means that each part can sit clearly defined without muddying the mix. The Virus A desktop was the first synth ever to stop me dead in my tracks back in 2002. MANY lesser more affordable synths later, I bought a TI2 in 2019 and have been selling off my other gear since. Truly a sound designer/explorer’s dream. PS PLEASE MAKE THAT EXTERNAL AUDIO VIDEO XOXO THANKS
Great demo! Every word is true! I just got a used ti2 with keyboard. Had it for a few weeks and I just cant believe how good it is. Its like every random tweak sounds amazing and fits easily in the mix. Its wierd! It feels like cheating or magic. I sold some eurorack modules to finance it and its probably the best trade I ever did. Using the multimode and sequencing with a pyramid is just insane. Up to 16 parts, one midi channel each makes me feel like my GAS is permanently cured!
Got my virus like 4 years ago and I didn't know about half the stuff you just showed 😅 I knew it was a beast of synth but seeing this my mind is blown 🙌
My favorite two synths in my studio are the Waldorf Iridium and Access Virus Ti2 Darkstar. My favorite drum machine, in the studio, is the Elektron RYTM MKII. Your studio definitely clicks with me. Dear all that is unholy, that comb filter just makes the pure sound of carnage.
The funny thing about these is, back in the day, you could rock out a virus (or Nord Modular) and a sampler and you never felt like you needed anything else. One of the hidden strengths of the virus is the multitimbrality (which I've seen few people use). You basically have a whole room of synths at your fingertips. I've always said, as you noted in the video, if you are using a Virus TI, there is little you will miss about a modular system. There is just so much you can do it's truly limitless as far as sound design is concerned. You will never be wanting some feature that is missing, there is so much to explore. Going back to the mid-to-late 90s, we have to give credit to Access (along with Nord and Doepfer) for bringing about the revival of analog synthesis and a return to front panel knobs, as opposed to the display + keypad + menu-diving format that reigned (but God Bless Kurzweil anyways). The Nord Lead preceded the Virus by a few years, but it was truly the original Access Virus that "infected" a new generation of artists with a love for analog-style subtractive synthesis.
or sample modular, buy Virus and Rytm, sell modular and be ready for anything. I think that a Virus, Rytm and sampler like a Roland SP 404 MK2 or Octatrack and laptop are really all that is needed for live and studio music.
Multitimbrality is the main thing pushing me toward Virus TI Polar over an Iridium Core for the same price. The thought of having 8 separate tracks sequenced by OT, then having even more I could do at the same time on Deluge or something else is mind blowing. I'm surprised so few people utilize this amazing feature. Just curious, Can you custom group the audio outs - like send 4-8 tracks out of one stereo out and another 8 out of another?
I used to hate on the Virus so much in the early days because of all the cheesy trance sounds seemingly everyone who owned one made on it and it seemed like a preset machine for a lot of users but once I got my hands on one I was blown away at how capable it actually is and how immediately nice it sounds. I have the TI polar now and I love it

Hard to believe how much it can do from so long ago. The most advanced arpeggiator I've ever used and the best vocoder as well. So much to love...

Great demo here ! Cool synth. I remember the first release of it, in red colour...20 years now ! Amazing digital tool(S) ! ... 22:00 WAHOU !!!! A "never ending story" isn't it !? It's calling me in order to play live with such a tool. Yes, i'm looking for a new machine these days (...), watching many review, catching infoS, etc, ... It seems to me to be The tool. Maybe... 4 parts, 4 out if i remember, this crazy sound of it ! So many features. The workflow so to play live with it is also the secret weapon, in my mind, as i see you play, comparing with some machines i've already have fun with... All in a box ! (Add to a little bit of nostalgia's desire, rermembering myself the first release of the Virus, in red)...Yes ! What's happening there ? 27:10 OUCH ! Thinkins finally that the firmware has been always updated, time after time : GREAT !
Great review! I have a Snow and have had A and B. Love them for many reasons, although usually have a hard time to place them in the mix. Viruses take a lot of room in the mix. That's why I got a Snow instead of the big one, cos 4 tracks is already too much if you use it with more gear. Also a great add on to the Digitone. Portability is the other reason. I don't use the plugin except for patch management, and the Snow UI is not that difficult to use giveng the tiny footprint. A Virus is something everyone oughtta have, either TIs or the classic ones, all are great.
I am worked with PoCo VSTi version for years and now use VSTi 1-on-1 DSP emulator of Virus-C (it would be updated to Ti in summer 2023) -- this is still astonishing synth for the time! love it!
Owner of the Darkstar TI2 here and wowwww Blush. I also use the iPad editor via WiFi Midi. It's just a very handy tools. It's 16 part multi too. Yes can you make another video on how you use the inputs fx? I do have my 303 clone inputted to it so I can use the distortion, delay, verv etc
Just bought the TI1 desktop secondhand, because of your video... It is amazing! Also found a Virus C for just 500 euros, going to compare them in depth and keep the one I like the most. There is a big chance they both wont leave haha. In 20 years these synths are going to be really hard to find and/or expensive... Its such a nice creative tool.
I have a Virus Classic and it does a fraction of this - but between the simple wave tables, sync, ring mod, FM, and routable filters, it does absolutely everything I could ever want. Honestly anything Access makes, buy it.
I've got four of them: Rack, Polar TI, TI2 KB, Snow TI. Possibly the best synth ever made. BTW - honorable mention goes to a synth that uses the same DSP chips as those in the Virus series: Novation Supernova / Nova lines (NOT the "Ultranova / Mininova" jokes). Different from the Virus, but equally flexible, chameleon - like, gritty, smooth, and intuitive. The Virus excels at leads, basses, plucks, arps, digital clangs and buzzes. Novas excel at pads, supersaw - like ambience, brassy polyphony, strings, and modulation impact. Both way better than the Nord Leads, Kongkorg / Radius, Waldorf Q and Blofeld, Ion/Micron/MiniAK, and even the AN1x / AN200 / PLG150- AN. Even the Rolands (JP-8x00, Vsynth, SH-32, System - 8 / 1, etc) don't compare to them.
I just bought one for the live PA. Was going for a Hydrasynth, as I want wavetable in the set. But the TI seems do what I need, plus the extra stuff like the comb filter... Your vid made me realise there's even more fun to be had. These things hold their value though. A
Fantastic demo. Just picked up a Virus KB for the keybed (Fatar TP/8S) and its amazing. It just happens to come with a Virus B :) I've hooked it up to a miniPC running the DSP56300 emulator. The little mini PC with an Intel N100 has enough juice to emulate about 12 Virus Cs at the same time. Enough to reliably run two Virus TI2's in parallel.
Yo Discovering your channel !Was looking for the Elektron tutorial and VirusTi …amazing job I have to say … You should definitely think of doing /selling a MasterClass on both machines…which doesn’t exist sadly… Great job! Thanks
Own a Virus TI61 and I feel the same way brother! The Virus is the greatest synth ever made. You can make any genre of electronic music with it. I use mine in Ableton for production and Psytrance Live PAs and it always delivers and I never have polyphony fallouts.
@@dbefore7165 It is a FM Analog Modeling synth and does not have samples in it. I have have made pianos, horns and strings with it before, but the waveforms you generate only sound “real” over an octave or so. In order to make a sound like a piano sound real, you have to recreate the sound over multiple octaves and use it in multi mode. It is a lot of work. If you are looking for sample based sounds as your main palette, I would recommend a Yamaha, Korg or Roland workstation.
Nice walkthrough. I could go on and on about mine but I guess just one story real quick. I have lots of homemade patches I've done over the years, slowly replacing the factory trace stuff. Some of it is neat but when I've made a library of patches, the thing gets more personal and under my control I guess. Anyway, I made this patch called BOOOM. It's an explosion sound effect. It was just another happy accident like you are showing here a bit. I don't know how I made it but it's the loudest thing I have in my room. It doesn't even clip. It does this digital destruction with a ducking thing. It sounds huge. It's like a bomb going off. I still can't believe it. How can it be so loud, not clip and still have this interesting character even in this fit of maximize violence? Something about the Virus DSP is just magic. I thought all wavetable was like this and everything I've run into is a let down. I like the Waldorf stuff and it's very close but it just doesn't do everything the Virus does. I really hope they make a TI3 someday. The Kyra was right there. Idk what happened.
Nice video. I'm struggling to love my TI. I have a ton of synths, and it can sound like nearly all of them. I'm starting to think I'd like it more if I didn't have this really well rounded collection of mine. Gonna give it time though. I know it's deep, and maybe it will just take time for it to find its place and purpose in my synth hoard, haha
Why are modern synths missing features like this? Formant synthesis, granular, frequency shifting, whatever else it can do. Why wouldn’t something like the peak or hydrasynth have this? Ridiculous how limited modern synths are for sound design
@@blush_response absolutely. especially with something like the hydrasynth. which is supposed to be the ultimate "sound designer's dream". it's 100% digital, and sounds like it, so why not at least add more options for sculpting the sound? the only option you have there is the "mutants" which are a couple parameters that enable slight exponential (i think?) fm & pwm. as if fm and pulse width modulation are special features that you can only access with unique "Mutants"
@@christdolphin69 I think the hydrasynth feature set is fine for the price point. The virus is a quantum competitor, it costs way more. Check my hydrasynth review if youre curious aboit my thoughts on it
The Virus is programmed very close to the metal by a genius. That's why it's difficult to replicate. Modern digital synths are programmed in much higher level environments, which leads to worse performance even though the chips are much faster now. Similar situation to the Octatrack DSP I guess.
I have the ti 2 and i love it. Lately i use it as insert fx for my vst plugins. Awesome reverb, distortion, delay, Analog boost, Filters.. Its a pity that access doesnt do any Update on the controller software. For example on mac no Update for catalina. So ill stay at mojave. Overall it gets a 10 of 10 for me..

I have a Virus Classic and it does a fraction of this - but between the simple wave tables, sync, ring mod, FM, and routable filters, it does absolutely everything I could ever want. Honestly anything Access makes, buy it.
Man, this is awesome! 🔥
Damn this thing is perfect for Techno productions
YES ! Joey, please the Supernova next ! You have such a great talent to make any synth in a good way bonkers!
I miss my supernova 2!
Had mine since 2006, still my go to for everything.
Please do the video about the external audio.
Great content!
Thanks! I will put it on the list for the future!
I just bought one for the live PA. Was going for a Hydrasynth, as I want wavetable in the set. But the TI seems do what I need, plus the extra stuff like the comb filter...
Your vid made me realise there's even more fun to be had.
These things hold their value though.
A
Truly.... A masterpiece. Too bad we will never have a new virus but who needs one? It is the ultimate digital synth
I still rock out my Virus C.
I miss my Virus A, and after this video I really want the TI.
Love the ti since it was born. Its my main Synth and never gets boiring!
I think i'll get a second one. Just for tweaking both!!!
Yo
Discovering your channel !Was looking for the Elektron tutorial and VirusTi …amazing job I have to say …
You should definitely think of doing /selling a MasterClass on both machines…which doesn’t exist sadly…
Great job!
Thanks
The Tipper machine as I like to call it.
I always wondered how Tipper got those crazy great patches. Thanks!
Insanely good!
Absolutely loved it. Please do another video showing the external audio. :D
I love the Virus TI so much that I have two: the 61 keyboard and the desktop. Thirty two MIDI tracks of sonic bliss!!
I neeed iiittt
Thank you for this!
Own a Virus TI61 and I feel the same way brother! The Virus is the greatest synth ever made. You can make any genre of electronic music with it. I use mine in Ableton for production and Psytrance Live PAs and it always delivers and I never have polyphony fallouts.
any genre? how's the pianos and orchestra sounds? ;)
@@aaronallender6117 it has basic fm, I’ve had a ti2 and it’s not all that
@@dbefore7165 Okay. I was wrong about my Virus TI. It sucks okay. It totally sucks. You cant make piano sounds with it.
@@aaronallender6117 Thankyou :)
Goddamn, that is a powerful little machine. I really need one now I hope I go in the bid on eBay and break down🙏
Holy shit.
That was incredible.
Brilliant vid man. Subbed;) please do more virus videos and quantum/ iridium
yeah that was before the Waldorf quantum & iridium.... Today the TI is out of production...great synth who never got the right updates...
Love my Virus TI. Few synths I will not sell and the 303, 909 and Virus are all keepers.
Idk what happened.
sounds sick af, i think i gotta get one
Going to have to stop watching your vids man or I'm going to go broke
Looks like a great guitar FX unit. With a bonus synth.
Why are modern synths missing features like this? Formant synthesis, granular, frequency shifting, whatever else it can do. Why wouldn’t something like the peak or hydrasynth have this? Ridiculous how limited modern synths are for sound design
yes! i always wonder this and why almost every instrument that comes out today only ever has delay reverb chorus and overdrive as effects.
@@substance90 you can run the virus as a vst plug-in now so not exactly true
One day I will own this!
just bought one. Built like a tank.
9:00 Richard D James sounds...
That is the most intense video I have ever heard what a machine! Thanks for the epic video.
There are 3rd party editors now.
I'm planning to steal at least 10% of blush , would be enough to open a store
Crazy good demo.
JUST what I wanted to see and HEAR🏆🔊
I like the warm, fat, 'analogy' sound of the virus. What other brands have that sound?
