Did this this morning and it worked brilliantly. So well in fact next time I'll try this way first. The replacement parts I got from upvc spares4repairs were easy to fit.

Just had a new glazing unit installed but the fitter didn't check the mechanism, so they closed and locked the window and now it is jammed shut.
replaced the handle to see if that was the problem, but seems either the lock box mech has jammed or the shoot bolts are stuck in the locked position. Little bit scared to remove the beads now
