- How to replace a Euro Cylinder Lock Barrel stuck in the locked position, with no key. Opening a UPVC or composite door with a locked Euro Lock Cylinder without the key using the lock snapping method. A step by step tutorial showing how to remove a locked Euro Cylinder and replace it with a new one if you have lost the key.
This guide takes you the the complete process, from start to finish, to enable you to change a Euro Lock Cylinder (which is found on most UPVC and composite doors) whether it is locked shut or open. It shows how to snap a lock. It's surprising (and worrying!) how cheap and simple this job can be.

After 21 years in our house in France, I had almost given up on ever locking one of our principle doors - a saviour Charlie, thanks !!
Thanks, im glad it was helpful!
A really excellent video, especially on how to measure the lock without having to break it first which allows me time to go to screwfix first and still leave the house secure. Thanks very much.
Thanks very much for leaving a comment. Glad it helped you out.
Thanks for clarity in full explanation - had lost keys or lock seized and could not use door. Managed to get new lock installed successfully. Thanks again and appreciate your instruction.
Brilliant news, glad to have helped!
Thank you very much . My dad wanted me to write this since you really explained everything so well . He has seen so many videos but none explained like you did did thanks !
Tell your Dad "Thanks!" It's nice to read the comments when a video has helped someone out!
Lost my keys for the door and followed the instructions. it works a treat. Thank you 👍
I'm glad it helped you out! Thanks for commenting!
Thank you so much for this video, I'm working in Spain on a resort at the moment and have been left with lots of maintenance duties, there's 35 units so keys will undoubtedly get lost and I want to be prepared for the eventual lock replacement! Thanks again, much respect from Ireland.
An international comment. Spain and Ireland! Hope it is of some use...i think it might be by the sound of it!
This was so useful thank you mate. Bought an old pvc door for a shed and there was no key. Used the mole wrench and it came off first time. Huge help. 🙏🏻
Glad it helped you out mate! 👍🏼
Mate, your a legend. My garden door was locked and I'd lost my keys. Following the advice in this video saved me a lot of time and hassle. Thank you

Thanks for taking the time to create this video. Saved me time and money. Cheers pal
No worries....glad it helped you out! 👍🏼
I brought a second-hand uPVC door & frame with no handle, which was locked. This video was invaluable in helping me get the lock out, thank you! I did try the mole grips but ended up using a hammer, but same effect!
Brilliant! Glad it helped. Whatever works best! 👍🏼
You my friend are a top gent, I just did this as I lost the keys to my bi fold doors, it works, you're a diamond!!! 🙏👍🏽👌🏾
Love this!! Thanks for leaving a lovely comment! Pleased it worked for you! 👍🏼
Brilliant Video! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I managed to throw the key away when clearing out a lifetimes collection of redundant keys, and thought I'd need to confess to needing a new door and not just a new eurolock...phew... Respect!!
Thanks for leaving a comment! Pleased to hear it helped you out....and depending how grateful you are, feel free to hit the "thanks" button on the video! 😉
very helpful thanks.also loved the left the working out parts in in regards to technique
Thanks. Glad you found it useful!
Cracking!! Thanks so much - great video. The fact it took you three attempts made me feel better 😂
Your video helped me change my lock - legend.
Thanks for leaving a comment! It was the first time I had done it myself so I never expected it to go first time!
Thanks for the video, it was a great help. It great to be able to do a job like this yourself. Also it was a real eye opener as to how easy it is to get past a standard lock. The price of the anti snap ones start to look a lot cheaper once you realise how little protection a normal lock gives. Cheers again
You're welcome, and thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
Thanks mate, well explained, took no time to sort.
That's great to hear! Thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
Very helpful, and demonstrated in a very agreeable manner, thank you.
Thanks very much for leaving such a lovely comment! 👍🏼
thanks my friend , saved me cash. only bit i had problem with was the bit with the allen key pushing up to clear the lock cam . basically i was not forceful enough! my stepson walked in and 30secs later ,door open. lock now fitted and all good . cheers!
Excellent, pleased to hear it helped you out! Thanks for leaving a comment!
Great upload! Will be attempting this job tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this with RUclips. Take care. Thumbs up from me. 🫡
Thanks, I hope it helps you out! 👍🏼
@@charlieshooter I done it thanks to this upload. Thankyou again. Take care. 😊oh and saved me £180 for a call out and repair over the jubilee weekend. Well £150 as my lock was £30 so great saving lol.
I'm glad it saved you a bit of money and glad it helped you out! Take care!
Very useful, this enabled me to reuse a set of uPVC doors I was given without any keys! Will replace with a more secure barrel.
Excellent....glad to hear it! 👍🏼
Lost my keys , never ever done anything like this , however watching your video made it easy , and I’ve replaced the lock cylinder, thank you very much .
That's great to hear! Glad it helped you out!
Helped a lot and got the job done at no cost wow it’s that easy to open a door without a key
Glad it helped you out! 👍🏼
Thanks again
Thankyou very much, after a day of drilling, breaking 12 drill bits and giving up hope and scrolling through about 100 websites...this video helped me get the lock out within about 3 minutes!
Thankyou very much!
So pleased it could help you out!
Brilliant tutorial, you should be on tv.😀😀😀👍

Just watched your video, key snapped in lock in bag door, followed your tutorial and all sorted within half an hour and only cost me £14, brilliant thank you
Brilliant, pleased to hear it! 👍🏼
Thank you. Got so far, and you did the part I wasn't sure of.
Glad i was able to help! 👍🏼
Great video , couldn't be bothered searching for my mold grips so one good clean smack with the old shuttering hammer did the job 😂
Perfect!! 😂
At least I now know what anti snap means on my new front door. Thanks.
Amazing video, that's what I needed right now !
Perfect....thanks for commenting!
A massive thank you for sharing your video, I'm in same situation lol. Going to give this a go, before buying a new door.
Good luck! 👍🏼
Great video! I had a door that I'd salvaged and reused from a neighbour and it didn't come with the key. It was unlocked fortunately so used a very large adjustable spanner to snap it. Super clean and not that much effort!
That's good to hear! 👍🏼
If it was unlocked you didn't need to snap it, you should have been able to just push it out
@@anthonycahill1408 you have to turn the key/barrel slightly to be able to slide the cylinder out. I think it stops on the cylinder cam in the neutral position.
@@adamseward5922 Ah, o.k, I thought it would slide out without the key if it was unlocked. Good to know
🎉just sorted mine how you did it and it worked. Thank you 🙏
Perfect, I'm glad it helped you out. 👍🏼
Mate thank you so much, I couldn't figure out how to disengage the lock after snapping it and the alen key trick worked wonders! Saved me some monies on a lock smith. Keep up the good work 😊
Thanks for commenting! I'm glad it helped you out! 🙈
What size allen key do you normally need?
@@charlieshooter What size allen key do you normally need?
If I'm honest I can't remember what I used here, but at a guess, a 3mm or 4mm maybe!
Tring to do my door and haveing problems with it thanks for video it's so grateful for video and time to help me x
I hope it helps you out! 👍🏼
Did exactly this and it worked like a treat only my catch to flick with Allen key was at top took me a bit to figure out but all good in the end thanks so much £14 for lock saved £100 on locksmith nice one ❤❤❤
Pleased to hear it helped you out, thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
Probably the best video on RUclips. Thank you so much for this.
Thanks very much! I imagine when you need it, it feels like it's the best!! 😂
Brilliant video many thanks.
Hope it was a great help! Thanks for commenting! 👍🏼
Good job.
I think ideally you don’t want the cylinder sticking out the other side though as it makes it too easy to grab on to, to snap it (with mole grips or a short pipe I believe they use).
What some crook did to me though was insert a screw in to the cylinder a bit and then use a claw hammer to snap/rip it out. Luckily my neighbour disturbed them but they still knackered the lock.
Replaced it the next day with anti-snap/bump/pick 👍🏻
Thanks for leaving a comment. I think you're right about the bit of cylinder sticking out the other side though. I did try to turn it round but as the cylinder is symmetrical it still stuck out as much. Maybe a slightly shorter cylinder would have worked. Ideally though, yes, you want an anti-snap/bump cylinder in there to really be secure. Thanks for watching!
Amazing idea
Legend! This saved me a lot of money.
Pleased to hear it! 👍🏼👍🏼
You're a saviour mate, thanks a lot!

Omg this video saved me £1600 that I got quoted for a new door! Thank you 🙏🏼
Excellent, pleased to hear it! There is actually a "thanks" button you can click if you wanted to leave a 'tip'! 🤷🏽♂️😃
Very useful. I just managed to replace my lock with this method
Excellent....glad to hear it! 👍🏼
I lost a key ring with keys for both doors of my workshop and the French windows in my lounge and conservatory. You have saved me about half a grand.
So glad the video can help people out and save them some cash! Feel free to drop me a tip via "super thanks"! 😉
Works a treat, spent an hour drilling out the cylinder, snapped 4 carbide bits and couldn’t get the last snapped bit out of the cylinder, I was ready to call a locksmith until this.
So pleased it helped you out! 👍🏼
Great vid! We found it better to snap the lock from side to side rather than up & down. That said, we did it with one either side of the door with mole grips and it snapped first time. We did try it up & down but the grips kept slipping off. Side to side worked first time!
I imagine it would work a lot easier with someone else the other side holding it solid, whichever way you snap it. 👍🏼
I used hammer, one smack did the job
Perfect!
Thank you! I got an oll upvc door for a shed. It was unlocked but no key. I want to be able to lock it. Mole grips one side, large adjustable spanner the other, wiggling it with force from side to side & it snapped easily. I'm a 60 year old woman and not very strong. I love the university of youtube 😁

@@charlieshooter me and my Dad,who's 87 watched your video mate and we did it on our own following your advice. I had the laptop on the table and talked him through it and after some fiddling, we got the job done. Really pleased you posted the video ad very grateful to you.

@@charlieshooter many thanks to you mate, you really helped us out. Had no idea what to do, but with your video ad a bit of father and son teamwork, we got it sorted,
Great little useful video 👍Think it's good you didn't edit out the unsuccessful lock snapping attempts as people would think doing something wrong if if didn't go on frst attempt.
Thanks! That's why I left them in, it makes it more real then! 👍🏼
Thank you! This saved my bacon and my sanity!
Happy to keep you on the right side of crazy!
It worked for me! The lock snapped easily but it took a few minutes to unlock the door. I used a flat-end driver blade to force the cam and it took a bit of force.
Well done! Whatever it takes!
Hi thanks for you add on you tube it works very well thanks again
Glad it worked well for you! 👍🏼

great vid clear and concise, my only critism is why a leftie door? it like been under the car and remembering leftie loosey righty tighty
A leftie door? I didn't even know there was such a thing? 🤷🏽♂️
Thanks!
No probs!
Awesome!
Great video thanks, and thanks for not cutting the attempts out of the video like many people do on these types of vids! If the lock had anti-snap, would drilling or picking be the only options?
Thank you, i like to show what it's really like! I've not had the misfortune of having to break an anti-snap lock, but i guess so, yes!
You would have to put the mole grips further down the lock barrel to actually break the middle
You lad are a diamond !!!!
Cheers buddy! Glad it helped out! 👍🏼
Thankkkkk you absolut legend
Cheers! Glad it helped!
I owe you a pint mate! Excellent

Excellent this will definitely help me. Do you have a video on locked window handles? I've lost some keys
Thanks for commenting! I don't have any videos on windows though sorry!
Thanks for the video well explained did everything and it has gone the way it went for you my only problem it I cant feel any cams with my Alan key. can you help
That bit is fiddly to be fair. It can take a while but you should eventually get there.
Thanks for video didn't want to near lock until knew for sure how it come out any idea if that will fix issues with lock getting stuck having to push back that square piece of lock which still seems to be attached to door after removing barrel the spring has Gon funny?
That would be the lock mechanism you're referring to I think. When you change the barrel, that won't sort out any problems with that. You would need to renew the lock mechanism.
@@charlieshooter thanks for replying 👍
Gd video. Thank you.

What a guy 👍👍

Brilliant. F………g. Brilliant. Thank you.
I think that means you found it useful! Brilliant indeed! 👍🏼
Brilliant video!! My only issue is i have a cam in the housing that looks like it has cogs to turn having an absolute nightmare!
That does sound a little more complicated. Keep persevering, it should go eventually.
You can also screw a thick self tapper into the key entry and use a crowbar
That new barrel is a lock snappers dream, especially with the amount protruding externally.
We weren't too concerned on this one because it was on a door that goes to a back garden with no other access. 👍🏼
Good video. I have a lock that had no key but is unlocked . Will the lock barrel just come out?
Probably not as you normally have to turn the key to line up the cam to make sure it slides out.
Nice 1 :)
Hi Have changed a few barrels in the past with the key, but my cylinders at my current house will not just slide out have tried turning the key slightly in all postions but just doesn't pull out any ideas, great video
Have you taken the screw out fully? Sometimes you may need to give it a good wiggle whilst turning the key maybe?
Good helpful video. The only thing i would add is not all cylinders are equal distance ie meaure 100 mm 50 50 but can be 35 65 etc
Yes I have spotted this when shopping for a new one! 👍🏼
Hi mate after some advice had my front door lock just start spinning while it was locked so I got the old barrle out replaced it with a new one fitted and the door locks but when u go to unlock it it just spins again like it was before any ideas?
Bit late in replying but I suspect the culprit as often is the case is / was the Gearbox unit - there is'nt much else left that it could be.
Hi, I have got the same problem for my conservatory door. Please can you advise about anti snap cylinders?
I'm not really sure to be honest, I've never had to do one. I would imagine a locksmith may need to pick it perhaps?
I've been given an old set of UPVC double patio doors. No key and remainder of the key snapped off in one side. I can open the doors to get access to both sides. Do you have a guid on how to remove the cylinder from that them please?
The fact you can open the doors means you'll be able to access the screw holding the barrel in place but without being able to turn the key you won't be able to slide the barrel out of the door. If you can get anything on the bit of key left in there (pliers or something) you may well be able to turn it enough....maybe a quarter turn if that.
If not you'll have to follow the video. It may be easier to snap with the screw out.
Cheers buddy
Glad it helped!
Does this work with the key snapped in the lock halfway locked position?! Please many thanks in advance!
I would imagine having the key snapped off in there would be no different to the position I was in, so yes would be the same.
Hi, I have a euro lock on a pvc door which doesn't always lock as it won't turn anti clock wise. Some time it takes 5 minutes fiddling with it by reinserted the key multiple times and by slight having the key out I.e not fully in. Is there any way to fix this?
If i was you I would change the barrel as i do in the video.....but obviously without having to snap it if you've got the key!
With the non-snappable kind (centre snap) I went through a few options and ended up with a vice-grips/lockable plier on one side (the short side, which was inside the house) and whacking standard hammer with medium force end on the long side - more leverage (it was facing out, seemed to me it should be installed vice versa but anyway).
Glad you managed it in the end! 👍🏼
Hi what can I do if euro cynlider is off but that inside mechanism cam is also damaged so handle and wont move as its still in lock postion
I'm honestly not sure on that one sorry! The whole handle mechanism will need changing by the sounds of it but you need to try and get it out to do so.
