Changing Hayward ColorLogic LED Pool Light to Pentair IntelliBrite Color LED Pool Light

- Hayward ColorLogic LED pool light died so replaced it with IntelliBrite Color LED pool light from Pentair. Before switching brands, I contacted Hayward to ask if they improved the service life on the ColorLogic 2 series and I wasn't impressed with their response.
The color logic was great while it lasted. When I contacted Hayward, I suggested that they request old lights that didn't last be returned as a core that they could inspect and learn something from in return for a toke customer courtesy credit toward a hopefully improved light. They were silent on that idea. My light actually looks worse that it really was since there's the glass lense over what appears to be acrylic interior lense which is supposed to be a water tight seal around the electronics.
Removal of the old light was straight forward up to the point of getting the old electrical cable out of the conduit after the light was taken out of the niche and the wires were disconnected at the pool side junction box. IMPORTANT: Securely tape a pull wire to the end of your electrical cable BEFORE pulling the wire out. This is what you use to pull your new wire back through the conduit. I simply lapped my pull cord over my wire by about 8" and used tightly wrapped electrical tape around it to splice the two together.
The cable didn't budge when pulled straight up while standing above the pool light end. I wasn't about to go into the ice cold water to try to pull and I know that adding lubricant to the junction box end is taboo....I did put fresh water from my hose down that end. What worked was taking a 2x4 about 4' long and then pushing DOWN on the cable from above so the cable was basically pulled DOWN out of the niche. You pull about 6-12" out at a time using this method.
Three tips on the change over from the Hayward to the IntelliBrite fixture:
1. The top screw from the Hayward light is longer and that needs to be swapped over to the Pentair light.
2. The Pentair diameter is slightly smaller so it doesn't fill the full diameter of my Hayward niche trim inset like the Hayward Colorlogic - but it's acceptable.
3. Technically, use of one brand's niche and another brand's light is taboo and it doesn't have a UL rating since they both don't match. I don't see any risk in mixing the niche and light since ground is still provided via the top screw into the niche ground.
Later that night, I can say the colors produced are great and just as good despite the Pentair using 30 watts vs Hayward Colorlogic using 50 watts.
Service life is what counts, so we'll see what happens at the 5 year mark with this new Pentair unit. Хобби
TY sir. I saw so many negative comments on the Colorlogic not lasting very long. I appreciate your help.
Hey Greg,
Any issues with the light this year? Lost my liner/light and am looking to upgrade. Thanks!!
Did all fasteners for pentair light line up in hayward niche? thanks
Did the light fit niche and work or did you have to do some modifications to get it to work
Grey I'm brand new to this pool lightning any idea on how man Pentair IntelliBrite Color LED Pool Light and other accessories needed to light up a 125m square pool??
Hi there, just had mine go out last year and now wanting to replace my colorlogic. I guess what I am struggling with are the steps to actually replace the light and cable and get it a new one in. I did read you description but it didn’t really register in my head where to I start etc. I do have a switch by the pool steps I turned that to off and the breaker, what’s next? Lol. Sorry for the lame questions, I just don’t want to screw this up
My colorlogic just died. My experience with pumps leads me to say, Hayward sucks....Pentair all the way, every time!!!
I know this is a reply to a 2-year old post, but I'm done with Hayward on all counts. I had a Haward Ecostar variable speed pump that barely lasted 3 years before the drive quit. I will not buy another Hayward product if I can avoid it. I have a Hayward DE filter that's been good, but anything electric has been junk. Unfortunately, my pool also has Hayward light niches, hence the reason for my interest in retrofitting with Pentair Intellibrite lights.
I just bought the Pentair Intellibrite 5G to replace my 8 year old Hayward Colorlogic. My only issue is that the trim on the niche is white and the Pentair is silver. The Pentair is not offered with white trim like the Hayward. ANyond else have this same issue, and if so did it look ok?
Great Video, thanks. Have the same issue with the same colorlogic except mine only lasted 2 years. I have no desire to use the colorlogic again but we did like the color depth and brightness with the colorlogic. Did you think the color depth and brightness with the Intellibrite is equal or better than the Colorlogic? Appreciate your help.
what ever happened with you changing this hayward SP0525S to a pentair? i looked for follow up and didn't find one. i have the same light only it is not the stainless version and it has lasted since 2007 and now it is flickering and won't stay on full brightness but still works. hayward has gone to some new POS that pool guys want 1,400 dollars to install and they don't even want to put them in. i'm sure by now you have prolly sold that house or whatever so thought i would reach out anyway.
I did the Change it works fine just need a longer screw
I replaced my hayward logic pool light to a pentair 5G intellibeite but doesn't fit the Hayward niche. Do I have to shave it or Do I have to replace the entire niche?
Are we really talking about $800-$900 range for either brand? Thanks!
How did the Intellibrite light work out for you Greg? I am considering purchasing one.
Don't... Pentairintellibrite 5G only lasted a couple of years with very few hours of use.
what light controller do you have did the connections match up? I have aqua logic controller
xFWxBigPapa how are your lights holding up. Just installed both pool and spa yesterday. I also have the aqua logic controller. Did you find it difficult to change. The colors by turning off and on lights. Thanks
How did you get the new housing to fit correctly. I know the pentair is about 1/4" smaller diameter outter ring and therefore sits slack in the Hayward nixhe.
Did you caulk or what?
@@GregHannerBroker so wish I could open this pic. no longer able to
Wondering how this has held up
@@GregHannerBroker would I be able to put a color board into a white light fixture
Thanks for this. I have the same problem, BOTH of my ColorLogic bulbs are screwed up and I refuse to pay close to $1000 to replace them. I'd like the put a standard enclosure in there for incandescent bulbs and then use one of the color changing LED bulbs that are a lot cheaper. So, as I understand it, you have to pull the entire cord through from the pool out of junction box? So i guess water gets into that conduit? Never knew how that worked.
how do u like the pentair ready to change col;orlogic
My Colorlogic lasted 12 years.
Going from Haywood to Pentair is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Pentair is just as bad if not worse. Don't use Pentair either.
For What I paid for, it was a complete waste. Had 2 installed and they worked fine for 2 years then both went out at the same time. Go figure. How is that possible? Never again.
I have worked in the pool industry for 48 years - Hayward is junk, stop buying junk, plain & simple...
44 years here. You speak the truth sir.
