I remember turning on to the cure in 1989 when I heard fascination street on the radio... Every few weeks I would save up enough to buy a new Cure album on cassette (remember cassettes?) and recall listening to The Top over and over and over... And over.
'89 is when I started listening to them too. I knew the name of the band before that, but I never actually heard any of their music until I heard it on one of my girlfriend's tapes. I don't think a day went by for the next decade that I didn't listen to a Cure album.
This must be during the time that Lol was so tweaked out that he was useless. I think I read that they gave him a keyboard that wasn't even plugged in because he couldn't even play.
@@japan906 its messy and disjointed- there's a couple of songs I really dislike and always skip but it also has brilliant moments like birdmad girl, the caterpillar & bananafishbones
@Xiroi87 I've seen The Cure live many times since the 80's and I can tell you... Robert has forgotton the words to his songs in a few performances (i.e., he was a bit tipsy).
Robert messes up Piggy in the Mirror and sort of hums the words. I always love when this happens because it shows he's human to and it also shows how hard it really is to remember all of those lyrics, One thing I always wondered is when Robert gets really lost in the lyrics and then picks up from different verses how do the other members know where they are in a song? I mean the songs are different after differt verses so how do they know where they are and when to end it? I always just figured that the band stays on track and it's roberts job to come back in at the right time.
Faniell 90 his 'Fish JM' had holes drilled in the peg board to hang a fish from, along with some rough 'customised' painting. This is just his black JM with the Top 20/ Silvertone pick up installed.
@missescookie well The Cure were know for making a point in NOT pretending they were singing when lipsynching, so I'm not so sure it was like Robert would forget the words of his own songs.
04:57 LOOOOL!!! ....Well, if i was there, i would have done the same i guess...cause it doesnt matter if we all die, right? ;-) ANDERSOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!
Is this really from 1984? It looks as if it could be a bit later, by Robert looks (and weight) Disclaimer: I don't mean to be harsh, I'm a big fan but Robert actually put on weight gradually during the 80's and I don't think he was overweight in 1984
Si, exacto. Es de 1984 y se sabe porque está la banda del disco "The Top" de 1984 y las canciones que tocaron son todas de ese Álbum, porque lo estaban promocionando.
theres just 1 thing i have to complain about with this video THE VOLUMES TOO FUCKING LOVE I WANNA CRANK THIS SONG AND I CANT JAMM IT LOUD other than that this is the BEES KNEES
I think this is one of their two gothic albums. The top and Pornography I think were where the cure were primarily established as goth despite shedding that skin. Ever changing and ever fascinating, it's pointless trying to lable them when they are evolving constantly.
Really pissed that you cut 'The Top' before the end. I video'd this performance at the time and you've missed the best bit. (Of course the video wore out eventually..)
I'm suspect as to how much artistic talent Lol contributed to this record and the following records leading up to his departure before the release of Disintegration. I'm thinking Lol was too close to Robert for him to disband him. I think he was an intrinsic part of Robert Smith from childhood and that friendship was probably very hard to dissolve. I like Lol. His immense contributions to the first five or six albums are undeniable. But how much of his "contributions" meant anything more than a dwindling friendship from this point forward, nobody but the band will ever really know.
and also... whats up with the crowd? they're just standing there. and theres like two people dancing... comon! you're at a cure concert! i would be fucking stoked.
Firstly, this isn’t a Cure concert, it’s a TV programme that featured many artists every week. Second, it wasn’t cool to jump around like an idiot in 1984. Third, the idiots prancing around at the back were stooges that belonged to the programme - they had some on every week. Just sayin’ 😎
...I was responding to a comment further down which posted up here...I know all about English traits...I was being rheotorical...excuse me while I go eat some meat.....
More than likely he was drunk, just like Robert Smith was at this gig. Is Robert playing his instrument, nope. Singing yeah but any drunk person can do this. Leave Lol alone. He's a founding member of the Cure. His drumming is on all the early Cure releases and during this time the Cure's music was really good as well.
Bananafishbones has got to be my least fav song and they still regularly play it live. Piggy I love, noticeable that they quickly Started speak it up after this. The top I used to hate but now love since the Dec 14 shows
I think sometimes he was put apart from Robert Smith, because it's not difficult to play these parts on keyboard, there are four chords in piggy in the mirror
Andy was great but Lol certainly wasn't useless. Lol never was a great drummer but you're probably too young to realise that in the early days he played the drums in many many Cure gigs (literally hundreds of them) and most of the time his drumming was perfectly adequate. There are somme classic Cure gigs from around 1980-82 and Lol was there and we loved the way the band played and we'd never complain about Lol's drumming then. The Cure never was about musicianship anyway. The Cure always was about creativity, emotions, dreams and nightmares, succeding on your own terms and being yourself whatever other people would say. Lol began to lose the plot when his mother died in 1981: years of depression, a downward spiral and i agree that by the time of Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me he had more or less become useless. But it seems like too many younger Cure fans are happy to have a go at Lol these days... Guess they're still mad at him because he took Robert to court. Well Robert has long forgiven him and so should you.
I disagree. He's (Phil T.) a famous music producer. Look it up. Yeah, Simon is real cool but can't compare the two of who's better. 1984's band lineup is THE Best lineup, though it was only for touring (live show), but it's THE BEST lineup that was only second to the HOLY GRAIL lineup of "The Head on the Door". In my opinion.
great vid...too bad its like their worst phase of the 80's :-p (they were great right before and right after, but the top? meh) the crowd looks like they don't know what to make of it either, nobody is moving, theyre all like what is this shit? :-p. Not their best songwriting.
used to have this on VHS....watched it all the time...I was 13....
As a women of 37, it is so great to see this!!!!
Andy's drumming was brilliant

The Top kicks ass
It's number one in their catalogue IMO. Really difficult times for all involved and yet still, they pulled off such a masterpiece.
