Saw the Cure play a similar but much longer set at the lovely old Victorian Saint James Theatre in Wellington, New Zealand in 1984. They did "Charlotte Sometimes", "Faith" etc. off their first few albums too. Ended with Robert Smith lying in the foetal position on the floor of the stage. The Cure toured New Zealand frequently and were always in the media and charts here in their early days because their manager Chris Parry was a Kiwi. Gothic and alternative rock music was big here - New Zealand was the only country where Joy Division had two number one singles...the Fall toured and put out a New Zealand-only live album of their New Zealand shows in 1982. Bauhaus, the Birthday Party, the Psychedelic Furs etc. were all big here.

Great show of The Cure, in addition to the strictly musical, is noticeable when an artistic proposal harmonizes perfectly with the social perspective of the youth of the moment and a period climate. It was the band that best performed the youth pulse of the mid-1980s.
I was at this gig, will never forget that night think it was my first gig and I was cure crazy then back in the Goth days...and I got tickets for free as I knew they were coming so went up the barrowlands looking for tickets...and I got them plus got tickets for Aztec camera that same day for the afternoon...then come back and went and seen the cure and was right at the front left and if I recall only about 15 to 20 mins was actually live on BBC for the all day rock a round the clock.... anyway was amazing night...seen a few more times after this back in the day
Barrowlands is instantly recognisable. Was too young but know the words, the chords and solos to each song, miss those days. No way I’d get past the bouncers at 13
Really enjoy Porl Thompson… such a great guitarist and multi intrumetist. A fondamental piece of Cure Line up… and very solid on stage. Notice that he plays Fender bass VI on many of the songs.
@@fundrive I'll take it over the people clapping along to the beat off time that stop halfway through the first verse because they are tired and it was stupid to begin with.
I’ll say it only once, people same age as my dad listen very closely!! (oh yes i’m writing this with tears in my eyes). so here I go. I envy everyone who got to see cure in their youth. envy with such passion i want to scream and go feral. you do not know what a privilege you had, cos i’ll never get to experience this. even if i go to a cure show now it was practically the time and place back then making it not the same, it’s the nostalgia i feel even if i hadn’t existed yet. my love for this band and robert just proves that music is timeless. god i hate this world, have a nice day everyone and especially the man himself mr. robert smith! - a fellow angsty 15 year old curehead, if i may call myself one x
the nostalgia i get when i watch their old performances pains me, im so sad ill never be able to experience the cure the way people could in the 80s.. although we have been granted with unlimited access to music from the 70s and 80s i dont think itll ever have as much passion as it did in the past.. theres so much more i could write (since im not friends with many ppl that like the cure as much as i do) but since this is just in youtube comments im so glad to see theres others around my age that love the cure as much as i do :')
Welcome! 🤗 Another cure head is born. I loved them so much that I played Simonette in a Cure tribute band for 7 years. We had members from 18-45 at the time. Basically, The Cure is so good that they attract listeners of ALL AGES and their music is relatable, influential, and timeless. Thank God you discovered them. 🥰
I've seen The Cure many times in all sorts of venues, but the greatest time to be a Cure fan and see them live was 1989 and 1992. The Cure was HUGE then and they were larger than life. I've seen them in so many different venues including small clubs and limited shows, but we were the perfect age in '89 and seeing an entire stadium of people watch in awe as they took the stage amidst the Plainsong chimes and flashing lights and dry ice... And 1992 we were old enough to travel but young enough to not have any ties so we could follow them up the coast. We did it again in 1996 and a half-hearted follow in 2000, but in 1992 there touring forWish and that was just such an amazing album. The Swing Tour had more variety ands them playing some nice gems, but we had already met them by then and they were no longer mythological... they were just guys.
Just fantastic. Saw them in Newcastle on this tour, so great to see this. Awesome sound quality, and the bass and drums just add such power to it all. Robert in fine form too. Many thanks for posting this!
Best Cure video I've seen yet. Thanks for posting.I loved this line up..I'd love to show this video to anyone who calls The Cure "Goth" They're Punk.Always have been
Rock? Definitiv Rock! See The Hall of Fame ;)) I dont care about musical pigeonholes, solong its in my " I Like This Shit" range. Thanks for upload this!
Yes Damiano ,u 're in truth , this song is sooooo very difficult to play..am not bass I play guitar 🎸 , liric singer (tenor) and keyboards. But I know Cure so well cause this is my the sound of my life, but I appreciate so much David 👌
I'm in love 💕 I think this is the first time I've seen Andy live! I prefer Simon on bass of course, but damn, these were the best of times! It's so sad that now we have mass shootings, cameras everywhere, smartphone addiction, and a pandemic taking out a good chunk of the population. Elon, build that time machine already! I'd stay in the 80's and 90's forever.... 💋
***** i agree with you ! Jason is a good drummer. Only songs like play for today can be played faster, but maybe Robert wants it that way. When you listen to 100 years pre-Jason and the way it's played now, i really prefer the way it's played now.
R9999 Jason is a yes-man wherears Andy and Boris had a say in the band. Jason is the worst drummer ever in The Cure Is it a coincidence that Lol uses samplers and Jason too? The WORST drummmers use samplers and backing tapes haha
RiChudo Andy, Lol and Boris just played what Robert asked them to, same as Jason does. In fact Andy wanted to improvise more but was stopped by Robert before he was eventually sacked by him.The backing tapes they used in the past have nothing to do with Jason either.Get your facts right before posting.
Mike Tunky Oh yes, Robert asked Boris to play those intrincate patterns in Last Dance, The Same Deep Water as You, Prayers for rain, Icing Sugar, etc! haha You know nothing about drumming Mike.
The Same Deep water was written by Robert and Simon. Just because you can quote song titles that Boris played on means jack shit. You know nothing about The Cure.
Interesting version of Forest, Rob buggers up lyrics early on then some never heard before improv words. All gigs I see in Glasgow always have brill crowds, must be something they put in the Irn Bru.
I actually quite enjoy Andy Anderson's style. This is a good lineup. And, oh the shenanigans of the fans... Ultimately my favourite era of the Cure, though I know so many don't share the opinion
I’m with you. I came to love them in about 1988, between Kiss Me…. and Disintegration. Arguably each better albums, technically. But The Top era remains my favorite, standing the test of time, for me, after 30 years. So psychedelic and experimental and colorful. I wish I’d found them then.
Misha Teller There are for sure keyboard parts in Shake dog Shake, hanging garden and 100 years. I do not think Robert would allow him playing nothing. And i think he would either. In that period he was still "normall'. After the Head on The Door his alcohol and drugs use became worse and worse. And got more abandoned from the group. Lol became useless during 1987. Thats why Roger became a part of the group. On Disintegration Lol did not played anything. And finally Robert kicked him out of the group.
Back watching this after gorging on Concert the Cure live this week... huge respect to Andy Anderson here.. I think his drumming was phenomenal and he really created the mid 80s drum sound for the band - which kind of became the template moving forward. 86 Concert Greek Theater Berkeley similar set list and 85 tour in Davis, Ca. Both UC campuses. Good shows. No openers, just headliners, just the Cure. They didn't need any.
15:18 this drummer might be listening to a click, or he may not. I don't care. This pocket he lays down on "One Hundred Years" is mind blowing. Then I heard "Give me It" 22:27 right after. Wow.
The best era of Cure. The "Concert" live album of 84 is a masterpiece. 👍
I totally agree. Dark, frontal, angry, without filter. Pure masterpiece.
Si es verdad. 😎👍💋😝
RIP Andy Anderson you beautiful soul
Most underrated Cure personnel.....fantastic drumming and bass....!
Yeah it's truly a shame that this lineup did not have more time to grow one year was not long enough
I still prefer sexy Simon! 💋
Cure from 82 to 84 is pure gold!!!!!
I would include 80 and 81 in there as well. 17 Seconds is a classic.
and The Cure live sound in 86 was also incredible.
last 30y not one song that i really love. pornography, faith, oh..... ❤❤❤❤❤❤

This was a free gig, part of BBC’s Rock Around the Clock event that happened in August 1984. I was at this gig. It changed my life 🎵 ❤️🎵
Started listening to the Cure in 1983 and still listen to them daily. Their music never ages, just gets better
Great show of The Cure, in addition to the strictly musical, is noticeable when an artistic proposal harmonizes perfectly with the social perspective of the youth of the moment and a period climate. It was the band that best performed the youth pulse of the mid-1980s.
The live album called “Concert” from 1984 is amazing. Raw. I used to have it on tape. That version of Charlotte sometimes is something else
Andy Anderson is playing the drums.

No. Simon was not part of the group in 1983 and 1984.
This is Phil Thornalley playing the bass.
He did a great job on A Forest :-)
A good old concert by The Cure in a wonderful place with amazing fans! Great drumming!
RIP Andy Anderson 💔
Robert always had this unique charisma!
The Best vocals in The 80's. Emblematic!
Just found this, i was at this gig when i was 14, one of the best i've ever been to by any band 🖤
That second song "Primary" is one of Cure's stand out tracks for me. Maybe not as flash as some as their other hits, but a real gem nevertheless.
Really enjoy Porl Thompson… such a great guitarist and multi intrumetist. A fondamental piece of Cure Line up… and very solid on stage. Notice that he plays Fender bass VI on many of the songs.
I was there and went to the party later at Nightmoves fantastic gig had a drink with Tolhurst he loves his whiskey
I was there as well how come I never got the party at nightmoves and also they played there that year as well I’m sure more than once
Notable also that back in 1984 fans didn't sing the synth riff on Play for Today
I know right !!! That shit is sooooo annoying ugh
@@fundrive I'll take it over the people clapping along to the beat off time that stop halfway through the first verse because they are tired and it was stupid to begin with.
Appreciated Smith's priceless response amid random stage hopper kisses and shirtless shenanigans... 46:49
I love it! 🤗
Love the cure live no matter what the lineup.....just as long as Robert is there !!
Andy ANdreson was a great drummer for The Cure. Then Boris came. he was the best for The Cure.
I have to say that Lol was the best since the first 3 albums are the essence of The Cure.

Just fantastic. Saw them in Newcastle on this tour, so great to see this. Awesome sound quality, and the bass and drums just add such power to it all. Robert in fine form too. Many thanks for posting this!
best version of primary ..ever!!! best lineup too!!
Just watched this from start to finish, Amazing. hairs are standing on end, Much love to all.
An epic performance by the cure . Majestic , unique and such acts don't come around nowdays. Smith was, and still is a genuine musician. 🏵️

post punk
Its impossible to label them as just one solid genre as they have been through so many.
Happy. The. Man. Love B-Sides live.
Wow this is a great show!! I was 18 at the time and just getting into The Cure! The first record I bought was Head On The Door! 🔥🔥🤓❤️🎶🎶🔊🔊🎸
Phil Thornalley is a great bassist, the hanging garden is not easy to play, he does so awesome
Yeah, Phil actually plays pretty well.
The Cure best line up IMO.
He came up with the StingRay. Thank him for that. Gallup never sounded that good. Saw them in '84 in The Netherlands and Phil blew me away.
yep and primary too (;)
Yes Damiano ,u 're in truth , this song is sooooo very difficult to play..am not bass I play guitar 🎸 , liric singer (tenor) and keyboards. But I know Cure so well cause this is my the sound of my life, but I appreciate so much David 👌
This concert is pure gold, one of my favorites, best crowd ever!
That crowd is madness, in the most sublime way
The Barras, one of the best venues in the world back in the day!
Pity they don't all have telephones in their hands.@@ClockwiseCat
And yes thats Porl on guitar and keyboard.
Best Band in the World 👍👍👍😃😃😃♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
YEAH! made my day to come across this gem. Thanks for sharing.
This line up was so tight when they played!!!👏👏🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯

excellent to see this ; great that it s shown on DutchTv, Bless, and thank you for sharing it here!
This is the Concert (1984) lineup. I immensely enjoyed this lineup when I heard the live footage.
I love The Top and this concert is the best of all time!!
25:10 WOOOWW
saw them on this tour at liverpool Royal Court and they were great!
Wow, at Barrowlands, 1984, how sensational
i really love how Phil Thornalley plays the bass
Gran concierto!!!!! Para the Cure los líderes son sus seguidores 🌹
Hi Marco, thanks for sharing this footage in great quality, i appreciate!
Cheers from Québec! :)
epic Soundman bass gutar, Phil Thornalley
Music Man
Gotta love 'Primary'
Sensationelles Material !!! Vielen Dank
10.15 was just what I needed
You guys must not know how great the earlier music was/is so good then. If only you would do that all again same everything again.
sincere thanks for this upload
Andy plays ... Jason always ....sampler , sampler ...sampler...again and again and again...
***** i agree with you ! Jason is a good drummer. Only songs like play for today can be played faster, but maybe Robert wants it that way.

my fav line up.... the drum's are soo groovy... makes such a difference... shake dog... bass too... great sound ❤️
Cracking gig - I remember them like this - incredible live - thanks for sharing this :-)
banda sensacional
Great hi-res shots of Bob's Jazzmaster in this one!
It’s such a shame Forever wasn’t broadcast
What a masterpiece! Marco, thanks for sharing! I'd love to have the record of this gig!
Primary is sensational ! Especially when some fans went on stage. Petjah !!!
I actually quite enjoy Andy Anderson's style. This is a good lineup. And, oh the shenanigans of the fans...
Ultimately my favourite era of the Cure, though I know so many don't share the opinion
Agree
I certainly do. and think the glove is the best thing Smith did (with his vox later, natch).

I love you for "100 years"!!
Awesome, Shake Dog Shake is made for live.
mis mejores experiencias musicales fueron asistir a los conciertos the cure en valencia 1987 y 89
They sound perfect in my opinion.
Es pec ta cu lar , muchas gracias saludos desde argentina 🇦🇷 💙...
Huge Band, Saludos desde Venezuela
The Caterpillar! Unavailable on "Concert" album. Amazing!
What an amazing version of 'Caterpillar' best version ever & it's not a song I'm a fan of but I really love this version.
Brilliant!
Cool vid. Best band ever
😅Son una banda de puta madre. Buena música,,,,,,, 👍💋😝❤️😎
47:00 LOL
Tem banda que não precisa fazer firulas nem palhaçada pra ser estilosa, é só ficar parado e tocar. The Cure é único, nesse universo.
YES, yes tambem !!
Good crowd!
Right, such a gem. Listen how Robert alters A Forest's lyrics....
Gotta get my fix of this one...high energy from the band and audience
Wow the tempos are fast ,and Phil and Andy are holding the low end tight!
Bob is smiling a lot for back then!
I don't think Lol (Tolhurst) is playing anything. I think he's completely pasted and is either turned off or unplugged. Never the less, a great gig.
No i do not think you are right. He is really playing keyboards.
Marco C It really doesn't look like he does anything until around 'The Caterpillar.'
Misha Teller There are for sure keyboard parts in Shake dog Shake, hanging garden and 100 years. I do not think Robert would allow him playing nothing. And i think he would either. Lol became useless during 1987. Thats why Roger became a part of the group. On Disintegration Lol did not played anything.
And finally Robert kicked him out of the group.
+Misha Teller Wow man, no way. They have released lots of great stuff since Disintegration.
+Radovan Budoš To each to his or her own.
DANKE !!
good old days,,,now we are living in the new dark age

Nice Upload, Thank you. Wow Big Konzert with crazy Fans 🤘👌👍. Who is Simon......🤔😩
Damn that performance of one hundred years is crazy
Fair play to Andy!
Que hermoso solo de acústica de Roberto en Piggy !!
86 Concert Greek Theater Berkeley similar set list and 85 tour in Davis, Ca. Both UC campuses. Good shows. No openers, just headliners, just the Cure. They didn't need any.
I wish I could have been there so bad
Rip Andy.
Oh man, listen to those beautiful guitars! So many amazing sounds. The Schecter UltraCure is the worst thing that ever happened to The Cure.
Agreed. Drum sound went downhill also after Boris left.
15:18 this drummer might be listening to a click, or he may not. I don't care. This pocket he lays down on "One Hundred Years" is mind blowing. Then I heard "Give me It" 22:27 right after. Wow.
They are the coolest band!!! Even the guy with lipstick is cool. Am from USa and dont know them that well. Are they excellent?
Definitely! You don't know The Cure?
Phil is great....but no one can play The Hanging Garden bassline like simon
Did you know that the teacher in Whiplash approved Andy and Boris on drums?
Jason got a huge slap in the face! :D
Whoa! 😳 Who has the Peavey? I feel really good about my amp now.
Bob's soloing on Arab, gnarly!
N1 fantastic
