    The ''clean'' channel is one of the best sounds I've heard

      It's never really clear, right? 😅 The first time I've had played using one of these Heads, that was my big concern. Because I needed really clean sound. It was a borrowed amp, the first time playing live with that band.

    If he had engaged the boost switch, you would have heard that this amp actually has a lot more gain available. I have the same amp and all you need is a bit of a boost in front and a 10-band EQ in the loop to get massive metal tones.

    \m/

    • @nolasludge
      @nolasludge 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah, but I will say that the Ampeg VH140C needs no boost. That is an amp that sounded great right out of the box. In fact, anytime I go to jam with some metal musicians, that is my go to amp. It's super easy to dial in, and there is no "need" for pedals.

    • @StayFreshMyFriends
      @StayFreshMyFriends 8 лет назад +2

      i have a 1991 vh140c and it is much better than this. no boost needed. I have Marshall's first mosfet solid state version of the jcm 800 and it sounds amazing but needs a boost

    • @nolasludge
      @nolasludge 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah, a lot of solid state amps get buzzy sounding when you get into high gain territory, so it's usually best to dial it back and supplement with an OD. That's why I love my Ampeg so much because it doesn't get really buzzy at the saturation point.

  • @ChristopherBane
    @ChristopherBane 8 лет назад +1

    I love this amp. Bought mine off my cousin about 12 years ago with the matching cab for about $300! Definitely a steal. It was out of commission for a long time because i was young and had no clue what i was doing with it. Recently got it serviced and it screams again. I did have some trouble really finding the tone i wanted from it but that was super simple to take care of. Put my TS808 mini in the front and a BOSS GE7 eq in the loop. This thing is vicious now. I love it

    • @JoeGuitar
      @JoeGuitar 8 лет назад

      I am the dude that sold this amp to Fluff. I used to run both channels at once. On the green channel I would turn the Gain to 10,bass to 10, mid and treble to zero ! Then I would blend on the amount of the green channel I wanted with the RED channel which I had the eq dimed. This way I could eliminate the Furman parametric eq I had in the FX loop. The green channel only purpose was to add low end girth. Running both channels at once made this amp very versatile tone wise. I could get lots of different tones. The amp was pretty awesome.

    Someone gave me that amp because he thought it was broken by how the distortion channel sounded. I checked it out and after cracking it open, noticed it was intact and had zero issues. The guy who gave me the amp told me to keep it, so it sat under my bed for 4 years until I needed money for recording. Threw it in Craigslist and it took 6 months to get rid of it (I live in Southern California, so that's an insanely long time). Finally sold it for $140, which is $140 more than I paid for it, so fine by me. I couldn't stand that amps' tone, even the clean channel didn't impress me, which is really saying something for solid-state. Lots of people try to replicate the Dime tone with the L-500XL and the '59 neck, and I guess if you used that setup with a boost pedal, you'll probably get that Dimebag tone. That being said, I got a way closer Dimebag tone with the Randal RGT-100, which I strongly suggest over this junky thing.

    It would be cool to see a video on how close you can get to Dime's sound with this amp, especially if you could include most of the elements of his rig (furman parametric eq, mxr 6 band, flanger/doubler, bill lawrence pickup, etc.)

    • @JoeGuitar
      @JoeGuitar 8 лет назад

      I had all that stuff.... and tried.... but I couldn't get it close at all. A big part of his tone was shear VOLUME driving those poor speakers into excursion. I wish I knew what he used for speaker drivers in his live rig. I saw plenty of Randall cabs in his stage rig .. which if left stock would have contained Jaguar 50watt spkrs.. they actually sound pretty good too. So much of Dime's tone was in his hands. And I'm definitely not Dime !!! lolss... Best of luck in yer tone quest !

    I was confused by the title, this video is for the Century 200 Mark 2, not the original Century 200 which is the Randall monster that Dimebag used. I would really like to see him demo. Century 200's are extremely rare to find but there is one for sale on reverb now. Only one for sale I could find anywhere, if I had the cash I would grab it.

    I don't understand your signal chain since I've seen an ISP Decimator on the top of the amp

    I'm not overly impressed with this amp. I think your demo of the CR120 sounded much better as far as solid state amps go. I'm a tube amp man myself.

      I bought the orange cr120 h because of that demo, ended up being the shittiest amp I ever owned. It stopped working twice, and than would randomly come on again, (yes I have a proper furman surge protector). The dirty channel sounded digital and dry( even though the amp was analog). I am now using a dual Rec and a fender super sonic

      Canadaguitar Haha, goes to show how important mixing is. Something can sound great on a recording but can be the worst piece of equipment for real world use.

      I bought my cr120 and, for me personally, it's the best amp I've ever owned. I'm a big fan of stoner and sludge metal, and I'm a total fuzz head, so I absolutely adore the tone it has. (it's also amazing for shoegaze and stuff like My Bloody Valentine). This might sound like blasphemy, but I actually sold my 6505+ once I got the orange because I didn't like it's tone as much for what I do. Yours must have been a dud, considering your reliability problems, and I'm not sure whether or not it's tone was effected by your issues. Everything is subjective though, and what works for you wouldn't work for me

    • @DomSchu
      @DomSchu 8 лет назад

      GuitarFreak1901 Yeah, different strokes for different folks. 6505s are not knows for being good at anything besides tight metal. Mesa Rectifiers are actually really good at sludgy metal stuff. But if you're happy with your CR120 then no need to change it. I kinda wish I could be satisfied with a solid state amp. They always just sound so sterile and hollow to me. Modeling amps are a little better and I like practicing at low volumes with them, but they never get the feel right.

      @GuitarFreak1901 8 лет назад

      +DomSchu I've never played a modeling amp that I didn't hate. If I were to upgrade my cr120, I'd want an Orange or100 or a sunn model T- both of which are pretty darn expensive, and I'm currently maxing minimum wage haha. I'm very satisfied with my rig though

    So I don't really know anything about Randall, do they solely make solid state amps?

    • @joshfeenai8363
      @joshfeenai8363 8 лет назад

      +Tim Crouch ah cool, I kind of assumed they would make valve too, I've just never heard of any. I do think amp companies should be looking more in to what could be done with solid state, I feel it could have some interesting applications that no one has thought of yet.

    That is the same and that I have but mine has more chunk. Although I am booting the shit out of it it running and EQ in the front and in the effects loop. I also have a BBE sonic maximizer. I also run an overdrive in front of the amp. I'd say I'm really close to the Pantera sound.

    Hey Fluff love your work. have done a mode 4. I know they get crap but i do like them except mine fried itself due to their shitty fans. now use markv and 6505. I'd love to hear your opinion. keep up the great work:)

    I was completely underwhelmed when I tired one out 8+ years ago (back when HCAF was "Lit" n not shit), didn't think about boosting it then. I was able to compare it to Crate Stealth 100, but that amp was cold, thin, sterile trash and the C2II was way better.

      i dont think dimebags tone would even exist if it wasnt for this amp so technically this tone is the greatest to exist, from a transistor stand point
