I share the same hometown as Roy (a small place in Norway called Elverum.) Kamelot did a show there some years ago, might be one of my proudest memories ever
Roy and Simone sing ridiculously well here. When Tommy Karevik and Floor Jansen performed this song, it feels like a cover even though Tommy and Floor are also superb singers both.
I have had this discussion with my wife several times. Tommy is absolutely fantastic in every way, but Roy was just....different. Tommy writes masterpieces, but Roy crafted spells with his voice.

Kamelot at their very finest. Feels real too; not like the corporate product they've become in recent years. I've consented to see the "Tommy-lot" reiteration live a few times now, hoping beyond hope for perhaps a little bit of the magic you see here with Simone and Khan. Sadly the performers nowadays just seem to be going through the motions with no real enthusiasm or genuine authenticity. Khan was such a critical part of why I loved this band and now that he's gone... I'll own and cherish this live DVD forever, for it truly is a diamond of brilliance and represents what I consider to be the pinnacle of this genre of metal-music. You are missed Roy Khan.
You do realize that this was recorded over 10 years ago right? There is a big difference between rocking on stage everyday when you are 30 and when you are around 45.
You make a good point. I should probably try and be a little more understanding and accepting of their current situation. And to be honest, I think it's cool that they're still out there doing it where many bands in their situation would probably have long-ago hung it up. But still...all that said, I still like the Roy Khan version of Kamelot better (thus far). I just felt their was a soul and spirit to the man that really shined through the music. Everything up to Black Halo was mind-blowing for me - Just so damn good! I just don't get that feeling so much with the Tommy fronted band, in both their live performances or in their recent recordings. Obviously all this is my own subjective opinion, and I realize and respect that other fans may have a different view. It's music so it's all good!
Well they did two more albums with Khan after the black halo, and those werent that amazing again. But yes, while Tommy is as close to Khan as you can get (seriously, its amazing how similar they sound in some parts), he seems to me a more of a gentle singer. I would actually argue that he puts more feeling into his singing than Khan did, while Khan relied more on his power and a bit of grit at some points. Also the music is probably has a different vibe since khan isnt one of the songwriters anymore. But as far as bands changing vocalists, this seems like a really easy transition. Tommy sings Khans songs very very well, and their new stuff is, in my opinion, just as good as their older. Maybe not as perfect as the black halo, but that was probably a once in a lifetime album for all of them.
I do agree that Ghost Opera and Poetry ftp were let-downs compared to their previous works, but even in those recordings I still find much to like. Not nearly as much as in their previous works obviously, but I believe that was during a time when Roy was really starting to experience heavy burn-out (both mentally and physically), wrestle with inner-demons, and acutely feel a pronounced change of heart in terms of his ultimate life path/goals. As far as Tommy goes, I suppose we can just agree to disagree. I don't feel at all that he captures Khan's warmth or tone. Khan (for me) is a far subtler, nuanced, and emotive singer. Don't get me wrong, I think Tommy is a good vocalist, and probably one of the best replacements to be had for Kamelot, but he just strikes me more as a generic-sounding Broadway style singer. Perfectly schooled with perfect execution but lacking any real distinctiveness or unique character. As you probably know, all the great singers are those that have both a great deal of character and technical proficiency, and I feel Khan has this in spades over Tommy. One thing we can agree on: Black Halo was a once in a career album - They really captured lighting in a bottle with that one.
w0mbatina Tommy is 36. Roy was around the same age when this was recorded. For me, it’s not that Tommy isn’t as good a singer as Roy. He has a similar range and a ton of power, but he lacks the emotion or unique style that Khan brought to the band. I just don’t connect with much of the new stuff. I even like a lot of songs off Ghost Opera and Poetry more than I like the new stuff. Roy made it feel like whatever he was singing about was personal to him even if it wasn’t. Tommy seems like he’s just getting paid to sing. I’m happy that Kamelot is continuing and their past two albums with Tommy have been solid, but for me it’ll never be the same.

Merely the sound of your voice
Made me believe that, that you were her
Just like the river disturbs
My inner peace
Once I believed I could find
Just a trace of her beloved soul
Once I believed she was all
And she smothered my beliefs
One cold winter's night
I may follow her voice to the river
Leave me for now and forever
Leave what you can
Somewhere in time I will find you and haunt you again
Like the wind sweeps the earth
Somewhere in time when no virtues are left to defend
You've fallen deep
I was a liar in every debate
I rule the forces that fuelled your hate
When the cold in my heart leaves it comes to an end
Quietly I'll go to sleep
How could that first time recur
When memories linger on and on
What made me think you were her
Helena is dead to all, dead to all
Nothing can bring her to life
Don't pretend that I'll be loving you
Once I believed she was gone
I corrupted from within
Leave, leave me for now and forever
Leave what you can
Somewhere in time I will find you and haunt you again
Like the wind sweeps the earth
Somewhere in time when no virtues are left to defend
You've fallen deep
I was a liar in every debate
I rule the forces that fueled your hate
When the cold in my heart
Leaves it comes to an end
Quietly I'll go to sleep
Follow me into the light
Like ice on a lake of tears
I'll take you through
Leave me tonight
I've gone too far to begin all anew (life fades in)
With someone like you
Somewhere in time I will find you and love you again
Like the wind sweeps the earth
Somewhere in time
When no virtues are left to defend
You've fallen deep
I was a liar in every debate
I rule the forces that fueled your hate
When the cold in my heart
Leaves it comes to an end
Quietly I'll go to sleep... sleep
