That's a wrap! Love your commentary Vera! You both have a home workshop to beat any dealership, and yes, your attention to detail and conscience is in another league, well done. Great video.

Great vid, winch looks identical to the Terrafirma one I fitted, mines been on for 3 years, I'm happy to say I've not been stuck in the supermarket car park since fitting. 🙄
I was thinking the same. I have the Terrafima A1200 fitted to my D4, but mine is fitted with a dyneema rope and has a wireless remote. I had a flip up number plate mount on my D2 but on the D4 I just moved the plate up onto the top bit of bumper.
The wireless remote did not work. This is why I did not show it in the video. I am also refusing to read the manual. The wireless remote has a optional cable and it works when connected 😳😳😳. Without the cable it does not work 🤔. The battery in the remote is good. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian ah right, mine has a cabled remote and wireless, the battery doesn't last long in the wireless to be honest so it's a bit useless anyway. Refusing to read the manual is standard male practice........ 👍👍

Hello Christian & Vera. This is a very nice looking winch bracket, and very well designed and most certainly fit for purpose. I say I think because I have never seen wire rope used with a hawse,, only a fairlead roller. In Australia we have a number of 4WD accessory outlets that sell the cheaper products. The main one I think is 4WD Supercentre. I am sure someone will add others.
I did update the drawings and made the design compatible with a roller fair lead. Even if we will not install it. Check out our comunity page for the latest drawing. It is much improved now. Christian
Fab install! I would say if vera doesnt like the look of the red cable then you should consider covering it with flexible black conduit with the split down it 👍🏼
That is not what I meant. I get asked so many questions what the red cable on Fabians car is, now I can show pictures of my car with the red cable. 👍🙋♀️Vera
I got my AUD$350 ebay 12000b winch with steel cable about 10years ago for my Defender 130, before the installation I re-greas and re-seal the gearbox that I have no problems with that side for many uses. I have once burnt out the motor, it was pulling a heavy loaded touring LC79 up hill. My local motor re-winder said the soldering on the armature was not enough, he has fixed all solderings on the armature and it was 5 years ago. Cheap winchs are not all bad. I see you have steel cable on the winch that fairlead you are try to making normally used for dyneema rope, steel cable we use roller guided fairlead, steel cable will cut the aluminum plate when in contact. As always, good video on the installation. Happy New Year.
Love your channel guys! But being a welder myself I wondered why Robin grinded that weld down? There's an old rule in metal fabrication saying: if a weld looks good don't touch it! Unless the weld's in the way ofcourse and the surface has to be flush.
Happy New Year! What a great project. Vera will be able to use the winch to rescue the mall crawler when it gets stuck on a curb in the car park! Best wishes for 2022. Bob & Jill
Hi Christian and Vera. Nice job and thanks for the drawing. In Australia the thing the cable runs through we call a fairlead and the original one you had with the rollers is for steel cable the polished fixed aluminium style is for dyneema rope. Also in Australia our main go to cheap 4x4 bargain store is called "4x4 supacentre" lol Happy new year guys and thanks for another great video.👍🍻
Hi Christian and Vera, i hope you and your family had a nice start of the new year. Like every video that you posted we stay every sunday in front our tv enjoying and learning much more than expected about ours Discovery 3. I share my experience with winches, i don´t have it in my D3 but I have some experiences with other wehicles. The steel cable will damage your aluminium hawse fairlead. For steel cable you should to use a roller (as supplied) or change it for a synthetic rope. this rope has many advantages, stronger, lighter and will not damage your alu piece even it works sideways. Best regards from Argentina
😃👍 happy New Year to you too. When we actually need to use the winch, we can mount the rollers really easily. Christian has that all included in the updated files. 🙋♀️Vera
Hi from Turkey,Cristian and Vera! Happy new year. This is my first post to you. I m fan of u and always watch ur videos with much pleasure. Just an advice , dont run ur winch without ignition or it will empty ur batt very fast.
Yes, of course, we know that. Discoveries are anyway really sensitive when it comes to low voltage on your battery. Don't want to mess with that. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Another goodie 😂...it is possible I've been practicing precision German engineering for some time...in Spain we call it ' mas o minus '....🤔...have a great 2022 and we wish you every success 👍
Will those bits of threaded rod be strong enough for the fairlead? If you're winching at an angle they're under a lot of force, and you don't want to damage the bumper
Love it. Very neat design. Have you considered adding a remote control and having the cable control for backup? To store the hook, you could run it down to the recovery point. Maybe add some scuff panels to stop the cable from rubbing through the bumper plastic. I would have the number plate hinge up as it will be mangled if you are winching up hills or muddy tracks. Time to get stuck to 'need it'. 😊
Happy New year you two. Another great video. You could always wire a remote winch control to save machining up a manual release although I know you wanted to use your new tool. Having said that don't use a cheap Chinese remote 😀
Hey Guys! Happy New Year to you both. Excellent German precision, yet again 😉. Your attention to detail, Christian, is second to none and never fails to impress 👌. Only thing that I was thinking about is that with all that metal work and the winch itself, would the extra weight affect the steering in any way? Another stellar performance by Vera, have you thought of adding an LR Time OMG T shirt range to the toothbrush? 😉 Looking forward to next week, take care you two
Happy New Year to you too. The wínch itself not. But when we build the car up in March, with RTT and Alubox, you do feel a difference of course in the driving behavior. But not necessarily negative, it's just different. 🙋♀️Vera
Happy New Year Vera & Christian 🥳 Just sat down with a brew to watch the very best of German engineering on a British LR lol 😂 Robins welding is excellent 👏🏻 Hopefully you’ll entertain us all throughout 2022 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie 🏴 For Vera 😘
Nice work, I'm always impressed with ur work. As I'm in Perth West Australia, and have an ARB BULLBAR on my 2014 D4 it will be easy to fit my winch when I decide to get one.
Great work once again. Fitting a cradle between the chassis on my D2 for my winch, because I have an alloy bullbar, was a simple job compared to Vera’s D4. Have you considered swapping the steel winch cable out for a Dyneema rope? Best wishes to you and family for 2022. Btw; good choice of room colour. Same as mine! 👍🏻🙏🏽🦘
Irgendwie habe ich das Gefühl, Christian hat es nicht Dir, sondern doch eher sich geschenkt. 😃 Wie immer einen Wahnsinnsarbeit und tolle Eigenentwicklung. 👍 LG and a happy New Year Stefan
Terrific video, as always. I really like the music the lathe plays - mine just sort of hums and grinds :) The design of the winch parts is quite impressive!
12,000 Chinese lbs = 4,000 real world lbs ! Most Chinese products look ok on the outside, but it’s the bits on the inside that really count. I hope the winch works when you need it.😜 Very nice German engineering on a British car with a Chinese winch ! I look forward to seeing the finished product.
Bless you both I hope you and your family have a wonderful new year!!! I am considering buying a discovery 3 but just anxious about all the repairs it my need !!!
Don't be, if you do your homework you know what to look out for. If you are serious, get yourself an icarsoft diagnostic tool for Land Rover, and hook it up while testdriving a Discovery. Then you'll most likely know more about that car than the current owner. Just consider this : You either can pay for the repairs or fix it yourself, meaning you also have all of the tools necessary. If neither applies to you, then do not buy one. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Christian, in Australia we don’t have a Harbour Freight equivalent, the closest is Hare & Forbes (machinery house) but they don’t have 4x4 stuff. The closest would be eBay where we can get all the quality Chinese stuff.
16:20 Ordered the clips from aliexpress. Was pretty cheap. Then liked how it looked without the plastic thingy and and didn't put it back. It's not like you really need it anyway. And sometimes it breaks when offroading (that's why the clips broke 1st place). Mine is D4 though. It looks bit different I think.
You better believe it. Every part taken off, gets its own box for the screws. That way you know which screws belongs to which part taken off. The same goes for building lego technic by the way, every color gets its own vanilla icecream box. 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Best part of this video is Christian speaking English with a stereotypical German accent on top of his own German accent. That takes talent. Oh, the winch is quite nice as well. Happy New Year, Muths!
Hello Allan, happy new year to you and your wife as well. I said a lot more things about my fella German country men but Vera had me cut it out. Thanks! Christian
Amazing work! I didn't know you had a patreon account! You should put it in your video post info. Subscribed. Vera, that was a great Christmas present. You are sooo lucky to have a husband that will shower you with such extravagant gifts! Happy New Year to you all!
Great videos. I did my electrical apprenticeship with the rover company back in 1971. 4years. At the rover factory in clay lane ( Acocks Green). we made the engine's for all of the rover cars and I ended up in Solihull after I finished my apprenticeshi. My newest car is a 2015 discovery 4 after I had a d2 that I had for 9 years, and the wife had a freelancer 2. It's great to see the actual time it takes to complete work on your diiscovery and I'm looking forward to you doing, 1) the front suspension poly brushes upgrade and 2) the rear wheel bearing replacement. But are you going to replace the cracked air strut you noted on one of your videos. Anyway thanks for putting all this on the Web. And look forward to the next videos. P.s. if you want to know how to install a dash cam and rear camera via the head lining, let me know
Front suspension will be coming soon, but I believe on our LR4, rear bearings are still going strong. Airstrud is not cracked, he was overexagerating 😅. That crack is only in the rust and dirt cover. My Disco is not leaking any air, but it will be replaced the minute it does. More importantly are putting in new glow plugs, a new oil pump and timing belt. So that will be the next major preventative service (not repair😅) on my Discovery 3, and oil change of course👍😃🙋♀️ Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian thanks you for your reply, also wondered if you are tackling that stupid gear box filter (apparently sealed for life) most of us don't have a pit so it usually takes longer to do underbody work. I look forward to the next installment. Thanks
Guys, before Vera attempt any winching she must watch the Land Rover winching instructional video called "The Gods Must Be Crazy" lol....you probably have it in DVD but anyway love the channel cheers from Paul Victoria BC Canada (past LR guru series 1,2,&3)
Those Chinese winches aren't too bad Christian, I bought a 1300kg "Runva" brand, with dynema rope and two cordless remotes for my Disco 1, cheap as. The only times I used it was to "rescue" other people's vehicles, but it's nice security to have on your vehicle when doing rough country. And Happy New Year to you.
I think the biggest difference to a quality winch is the durability and resistance to the elements. In salty and wet conditions, this winch will not work very long. I plan to overhaul it in 12 month and show the “no use abuse”. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian we live "remote" in Northern Australia, my Disco not garaged in wet season, lots of deep water crossings, mud, dirt etc, winch has been on for six years, still fine, not badly rusted, working fine when needed, so cheap Chinese is ok.
Happy New Year!! Another cracking video to show your amazing skills. Could you make a section behind the hinge down number plate to hide the hook maybe?
Christian, industrial electrical connection, I would expect nothing less😎. I like your precision eye-chrometer (as Fab Rats would say) resulting in precision German engineering.
@@Vera_and_Christian 😂 now that would be very interesting and something that Christian can find lots of enjoyment doing especially the technical side of it 😂😂👍
Great vid as usual Let’s hope 2022 is better than 2021 so we can get out and use our off road gear Hope you enjoyed your Christmas break and all the best for the New Year , wearing your sticker on my Landrover and it’s looking good !!!!
First of all HAPPY 2022. Once more a brilliant assembly. Second, I suppose you have to get rid of this steel cable and replace it with a plasma synthetic rope. Less weight, more safety.
I replaced my D2 plastic bumper with a real steel bumper. Very sturdy. $500 installed. Winch just bolts to the bumper. Do you have Harbor Freight in Germany? Great source for cheap tools.
We can't just replace the bumper like the guys in Australia or the US, unfortunately. Our TÜV forbids any permanent changes to the outside dimensions of a vehicle. It sucks. No harbor freight for us here. 🙋♀Vera
No way, Christian has endless amounts of energy. 👍😅. And we were really eager to finally start working on our own projects again. Happy New Year. 🙋♀️Vera
Yes, not sure if this will be the next video on Sunday. It will not get many views which drops our channel on RUclips. We may have to post something more general first… Like “why we don’t drive Toyota”. So it may be an other 1.5 weeks the oil pump video. Check back Sunday 👍. Christian
Happy New Year all - question ... why hinge the number plate downwards? Why not hinge upwards and have a gap so the cable end can hang down and be attached to the new tow point when driving? - or - have a couple of vlips and remove the number plate when you need the winch? The disadvantage of hinging down, as I see it, is thet you don't have any tie-down for the cable end ???
The part you asked is called a fair lead or Hawse fairlead…the same as a fair lead on a ship or the hole where the anchor chain comes from, that’s called a hawsepipe! It looks like the lead you’ve made is aluminium? If so that won’t last long with wire rope… what would be best if you get some dyneema rope which has many benefits other than also being suited to the lead you have. It’s lighter than steel, can’t have strands hurting hands and above all has very little recoil. It amazes me when I watch people standing next to wire rope under tension…it can kill if it lets go! I work around shipping and have seen what can happen with wire rope… also the bolts which come off the winch to mount the lead I don’t think will stand the force if you want to pull anything other than straight ahead and could damage the bumper. Anyway I just thought I’d point it out but as always, another great video and very enjoyable to watch. Happy new year to you both.
I work on improving the fairlead but we cannot go to a synthetic rope. We post a video every week and each one is about 200 to 500 Euro to produce. This one was 700 Euro in supplies. The gas and wire for the welder was 110 alone. Paint, primer, bolts, laser cut and the winch…. RUclips gives us about 40 dollars for a video. So add this up times 3 per month and think about if you can afford to run a hobby RUclips channel. A synthetic rope is 300 Euro. Our channel is about low-cost and affordable repairs and mods. High-end bold-on stuff is covered by Trailrecon. Including how to make coffee. My answer fits to many comments on this video. Thanks. Christian

I’ll work on it and maybe post a follow up. The wireless remote came with the winch but did not work. Christian
Nice work, have all the stuff sitting to get mine on the LR4. Thanks for reminding me to do it.
😃👍🙋♀️Vera
This was awesome to watch and learn.
Happy New year you two. Another great video. You could always wire a remote winch control to save machining up a manual release although I know you wanted to use your new tool. Having said that don't use a cheap Chinese remote 😀
Happy New year Christian and Vera. Thanks fifth all the great content.
I hope 2022 is a good year for you both.
All the best Danny and Emma
🙋♀️Vera
Love the disclaimer in the description 👍
Happy New Year Vera & Christian 🥳 Just sat down with a brew to watch the very best of German engineering on a British LR lol 😂 Robins welding is excellent 👏🏻 Hopefully you’ll entertain us all throughout 2022 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie 🏴 For Vera 😘
Ihr seid ein tolles Paar und ich danke Euch herzlich für die Videos! Grüße aus Dubai ❤️
😃👍 Danke, Grüß zurück an euch🙋♀️ Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian wenn Ihr zufällig hier vorbei kommt dann herzliche Einladung in die Wüste mit meinem roten LR3 4.4V8
Unbelievable perfect job and great Video! Thanks for sharing this, now I know what to do in the upcoming spring time 👍
Nice work, I'm always impressed with ur work. As I'm in Perth West Australia, and have an ARB BULLBAR on my 2014 D4 it will be easy to fit my winch when I decide to get one.
Happy Christmas and prosperous new year to you both. I had a wench for Christmas, she is lovely.
Great to hear you mentioned Kurtis from CEE ! Remember , he uses an airhammer to clean his welds :). Btw, Vera looks better then Homeless !
Well this is one way of dragging in the New Year ! Well done and Happy New Year!
Irgendwie habe ich das Gefühl, Christian hat es nicht Dir, sondern doch eher sich geschenkt. 😃 Wie immer einen Wahnsinnsarbeit und tolle Eigenentwicklung. 👍 LG and a happy New Year Stefan
😅👍 Da liegst du richtig, und zu meinem Geburtstag diese Woche, schenkt er sich jetzt noch die Umlenkrollen. Frohes Neues Jahr 🙋♀️Vera
🤣🤣😄
Terrific video, as always. I really like the music the lathe plays - mine just sort of hums and grinds :) The design of the winch parts is quite impressive!
12,000 Chinese lbs = 4,000 real world lbs !
Most Chinese products look ok on the outside, but it’s the bits on the inside that really count.
I hope the winch works when you need it.😜
Very nice German engineering on a British car with a Chinese winch !
I look forward to seeing the finished product.
In Australia the budget 4x4 and camping gear retailer is 4x4 Superstore also know as Kings.
👍🙋♀️Vera
Thanks so much for the advise I really appreciate it…: looking forward to see more of your videos…
It looks bit different I think.
die beste möglichkeit schrauben zum lagern während der arbeit !
die vanille eis boxen hahaha
👌🏽😊
You better believe it. Every part taken off, gets its own box for the screws. That way you know which screws belongs to which part taken off. The same goes for building lego technic by the way, every color gets its own vanilla icecream box. 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Wonderful job, it's tidy worked away in the bumper. Also nice wou are also following Curtis from CEE
Brilliant. Love ur work guys!
Forgot to ask if there was a link to be able to buy the laser cut winch mount components?
Another excellent video, Happy new year and all the best for 2022 ..
Thanks! Christian
Brilliant work👌Happy New year to the both of you👍
Amazing work! I didn't know you had a patreon account! You should put it in your video post info. Subscribed. Vera, that was a great Christmas present. You are sooo lucky to have a husband that will shower you with such extravagant gifts! Happy New Year to you all!
😅👍 We startet Patreon only like 2 weeks ago. Thank you for your support. I will contact you through patreon soon. Happy New Year. 🙋♀️Vera
Thanks
Genius as usual, happy new year guys,
Guys, before Vera attempt any winching she must watch the Land Rover winching instructional video called "The Gods Must Be Crazy" lol....you probably have it in DVD but anyway love the channel cheers from Paul Victoria BC Canada (past LR guru series 1,2,&3)
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too. 🙋♀️Vera
“I don’t need any instructions” 👍🏼
Happy New Year!🍾🥂
Happy New Year Christian and Vera!
Happy New Year to you too. 🙋♀️Vera
It's not broken.....yet says Vera 😂😂😂👍 excellent job and a happy new year to you and the family.
Happy New Year!! Another cracking video to show your amazing skills. Could you make a section behind the hinge down number plate to hide the hook maybe?
HAPPY NEW YEAR, dear Vera and Christian
😃👍Happy New Year to you too🙋♀️Vera
Christian, industrial electrical connection, I would expect nothing less😎. I like your precision eye-chrometer (as Fab Rats would say) resulting in precision German engineering.
So you are preparing to visit the uk and do some off road work looking forward to the mud 😂👍
Yes, next we will make the steering wheel silde from left to right. Then we are ready to go.
@@Vera_and_Christian 😂 now that would be very interesting and something that Christian can find lots of enjoyment doing especially the technical side of it 😂😂👍
Love this! I’m looking to buy a D3 or 4 as my next vehicle. Subscribed!
😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Great vid as usual
Let’s hope 2022 is better than 2021 so we can get out and use our off road gear
Hope you enjoyed your Christmas break and all the best for the New Year , wearing your sticker on my Landrover and it’s looking good !!!!
Very clean install, well done😊. I'm from Australia, we have Costco, Bunnings and Aldi.
😃👍I think we meant Bunnings 🙋♀️Vera
Outstanding job!!!
🙋♀Vera
So very well done, the fuse holder for air suspension must be about worn out on your car 🤣
Yes, the fuse is all dirty and sticks out compared to the others. Christian
Looks superb 👍
Happy New Year to you two. I thought you'd have a break over Christmas ... but no ... there's engineering to be done :)
No way, Christian has endless amounts of energy. 👍😅. And we were really eager to finally start working on our own projects again. Happy New Year. 🙋♀️Vera
Top class work very smart 👌
Oh my got! Awesome video as always 👌, You guys are great 👍, would you consider installing one on my LR4?
Very nice job! One question did you say some time ago you were to test different oil pump brands for the TDV6??
That is just a short term solution, when you watch the video till the end, he explains how it will be finished. We ran out of time👍🙋♀️Vera
Thanks. Christian
Great engineering once again👌🏻
hi, awesome job, do you do that just for you ? can you do a similar job on a RRs L494? thanks
Thanks, we only do this as a hobby for our own car. Christian
