- A social media trend claims the lives of two young Bay Area men. People climbing on top of BART trains and attempting to surf them. it's something called BART-surfing.

It sucks having to deal with the suicides. My worst workdays. I've seen train operators in shock from the impact.
Then a mainline technician has to inspect the car underside for damage to verify the train can move safely.

It’s a traumatic event for commuters as it stops all trains in all directions for 4 hours.
Sadly, that is the real tragedy.

Well, don't think anybody's going to be evolving any traits to not surf on trains.
Back in the day, kids used to put their hands on the train rails and when they felt a train coming, they would run into the tunnel and try to make it to one of the little carve-outs in the tunnel. Some kids are intent upon killing themselves for the thrill.
You would think after the first guy died while doing this the next guy would think better of it. RIP.
Not a lot of THINKING involved.

I was a BART Train Operator, and had many experiences with passengers, but this one takes the cake (so far).
Stupid move. No common sense. Don't blame social media. Blame those 2 people. Do you really need to tell people NOT to ride on the top of BART trains when it is illegal to climb up to the top and stand on a train? I agree with most of the other comments- they deserve to win the Darwin Award.

One second they’re calling them “children”, the next “teens”, a split second later, “young men”. The first interviewee wanted to call them something else.

Some one mentioned how those who were interviewed about this incident in the report were "trying not to laugh"...maybe so, but I get the impression they were trying not to laugh, at how pathetically stupid this action was. Like, "Are you kidding me?" It's amazing that the internet is this great tool of wealth and knowledge, but also something that encourages some to show off. I'm sadden that his family and friends will always remember how he died. And I'm sure the victim REALLY DID KNOW BETTER!! But the price of attention for doing something like this is way too expensive to gamble with and it's sad the sense wasn't there to stop him from doing something so dangerous.

Nothing tragic about it. Smart enough to know how to break in the area, smart enough to sneak onto the train then smart enough to know not to do it. It was a stupid thing to do.

It also happens outside of California, anywhere there are trains. There was one incident atop a CTA train in Chicago a week ago.

Myself growing up around there the most dangerous thing to watch out for was gangs. What do you say to people who have to protect themselves from themselves.

They chose to do this. They were not forced to do it. Tragic is saved for those who are killed by a drunk driver, or murdered. These two young men made the choice to participate in a behavior that was dangerous. My condolences to their families.
