Whatever you do, don't stop your Nightwish reactions until you reach their (in my opinion) two magnum opus, The Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth. Lots to go through before you reach those, but those 2 are probably their biggest songs. For Poet and the Pendulum you should do some reading up on it before.

Be ready for Poet and the Pendulum. It packs a big punch and understanding the history with this song is very important.

I concur. Note that both may need some preparation, but different, for PatP it really helps if you know what happened when Tarja was dismissed and how fans and politicians reacted. The music conveys the emotions, but knowing the background explains why that emotion is in that part of the 'song'. For GSoE some general knowledge about the formation of the solar system and the origins of life and evolution might explain some lyrics. If you have that backgroud, just jump in.

And he does it every time and at every concert, without flaws or misses. And it is always, always Tasteful, never over the top, or too little, just exactly what the song needs. Cheers / B.

    Hi Eric,
Yes, it is a different tone, the first half especially, as this song was written for Anette, who had a more poppy tone to her voice.
Even so, Floor makes it entirely her own, as always, and adds her own signature to it, only amplifying the entire band. It is indeed brilliant, of the entire band.
Thank you for your brilliant analyses, BTW, I really love them, and not in the least because you are open about your own emotions. Thank you for that, it is much, very much appreciated!
    Kindest regards, Wim
P.S.: I wrote the above between the first minute and first quarter of the song. Quite interesting you said about the same I mentioned here, in other words and way more eloquently than I ever could ... 😁. And yes, Marko did perform with Ayreon, in one recording with Floor as well.

Yeah, Emppu loves to hold long notes and do slow solo's like Gilmour :) Yes, I've been to 5 Nightwish concerts and every age group is always represented, from children to pensioners. It is easy to see why we are all so passionate about Nightwish. Please put Shudder Before the Beautiful opener from this Wembley concert on the list, you have to see that nuclear energy :) And I must say again when you do Greatest Show on Earth it must be Tampere concert, it is more impressive than Wembley one cause it is open air stadium. I don't like to repeat but I'm too afraid that you might do Wembley version cause that one is on Nightwish page :) On the other hand Poet and the Pendulum has to be from Wembley, that's pinnacle version.

I think the only song Tuomas has ever written especially for radio broadcasting purpose (not counting the song for the Eurovision Songcontest) was 'Sleeping Sun'. He was asked to write a 4-minute top song for release in Germany (dedicated to the solar eclipse that arose on the European sky in 1999). He wrote the song (which is beautiful by the way), but very reluctantly. He is not one to be restricted in his songwriting.
To answer your other question; yes, Marco has worked with Arjen Lucassen. He was a guest vocalist for the Ayreon album 'Theory Of Everything'. He has also performed in some live shows. I personally like 'Age Of Shadows', in which he sings with Hansi Kürsch and Floor Jansen. ruclips.net/video/97wouxo2AfE/видео.html

Thanks, this was a good video again. It’s interesting to follow what you find about them and their music.
Floor and Marko. They are probably one of the best singer couples. When there are players in soccer or hockey whose teamwork is perfect. And we admire "how the two always find each other on the field," so Marko and Floor have the same situation. Perfection.
You are right about Tuomas. He doesn’t make music for the radio. Actually, he does it for himself. Kind of.
His process is that he gets the vision, hears it in his head. Then write it. And finally the lyrics. He doesn’t think about what others think of it.
I am happy that he is financially free to do so. The worst thing would be if his creativity were forced to make music for the money. Now he is in a situation where he can give wings to his imagination. And we are the winners in this case !!!

  • @TimoArula

This song has a special place in my heart !!! Not just because wolf is Estonian national animal, but "The Windmill" battle between Tuomas and Floor . Plus Floor's inner Wolf ....
    Holy Mother of Odin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
The title is taken from a King's novel called “Wolves of the Calla”. But the conception of the book has nothing to do with the text behind the song, it is far more inspired by the film "Dead Poets' Society". The main idea is - one must live his life the best he can, to strive for his aims, because the wolves are always 7 days behind you and they will catch you if your life is not of full value... and then you will be only dead meat.
That's what Tuomas said in one interview some time ago.
And here is something to help you : How to pronounce the names of Nightwish members in Finnish ruclips.net/video/DpapnmXoIZk/видео.html
Marko and Ayreon , here we goo : Ayreon Universe - Age of Shadows Live at Tilburg 2017 ruclips.net/video/DGv1RwhpvZY/видео.html and Ayreon - River Of Time (Universe) ruclips.net/video/bieFc3WhBKw/видео.html

I didn't read down the comments too much, so I apologize if this has been brought up before. This song is based on a novel called Wolves of the Callah, part of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The series' main protagonist is a somewhat mysterious guy named Roland Deschain, known in the first book as only "The Gunslinger." The world he lives in has devolved into something approximating the old american west. When you were mentioning the thematic elements you were noticing and how they made you feel I was struck by how well Thuomas translated the themes of that world into his music to the point that you saw the imagery even though you weren't familiar with the book (if you were, I apologize, but you didn't say so.) That dude is a master of his craft.

I love your reactions you are definitely one of the best I've ever seen on RUclips....... I remember when I 1st started following Nightwish and I heard Floor Jansen Sing I stated stated in one reaction video that shouldn't video that she reminds me of a couple of running backs in the NFL...... And there are not too many running backs in the history of the NFL that can run you over stop on the dime catch balls out of the backfield block if they have to....... And come up huge in the clutch and just have a presence about them that everyone else notices immediately........... And for some reason I always thought that was a good analogy for Floor because she can do just about anything but some of her best attributes are stuff you can't put your finger on they are so subjective and that's what I think makes her amazing

another one of my favorites :-)! Thanks for that. This band, man... This certainly has a very different vibe from dead boys poem. They are masters of emotion; For the happier vibes I usually go to Alpenglow, My walden, or - often forgotten - over the hills and far away. The official live video for that one has a lot of photographs of the band they wanted to share with the fans. Very much worth watching. you got it quite right by the way: this band as a whole is greater than the individual parts. Every one of them individually is a master of their chosen craft, but forged together by Tuomas' craft, they reach heights few bands have attained before them. And each of them willingly bend themselves to his craft. That makes them truly great.

  • @Thorgrim247
    @Thorgrim247 2 года назад +5

Another of my favorites! This one was inspired by the Steven King book series called Dark Tower V "Wolves of Calla". In my opinion it is also all about "Carpe diem". The wolves and the poison are metaphors for death, which is never far away in all of our lives. Make the most of every day. It may be your last. Live life to its fullest and grab everything life has to offer. Heroes dare to take chances to grab for everything they dream of in life. Cowards never take the chance to achieve success and fulfillment of their dreams. Fear of failure.
Damn, you are great at finding descriptive designations & texture references for music. Are you an author? Well done Eric. Passion!
Yes, that is where Annette left this song and in came the Queen. "Is this where, Heroes and Cowards part ways"! Yes!
Never hatred Eric. Henry is absolutely dominant as a runner.
Marko big vocal influence is Ronnie James Dio. it does that for me as well. This band has reignited my passion for music. It has been missing or at least dulled for a couple decades. Too much music and music industry can dull even the most passionate music lover. Marko has hooked up with Arjen several times.
I would suggest you return to Wacken 2013 to experience the opener "Dark Chest of Wonders" (Wacken fans see Floor 1st time). As well as the closer, "Last Ride of the Day", which is a great song to close the show.

So my fantasy hubby Sir Tony Kakko took Tuomas hiking because Tuomas wanted to end Nightwish.

You're partially right. Yes, the song was written before Floor joined the band. But also technically the song was written before Anette joined the band. The album Dark Passion Play was written after Tarja had been ejected from the band but before Anette had been chosen to replace her. The band members said it was scary because they wrote the lyrics and music and had all the tracks laid down without any of the female vocals and they weren't sure it was going to work, they weren't sure they were ever going to find someone to fill the gap left by Tarja at that point. So with that in mind, the tracks on DPP could be done with either Anette's or Floor's vocals without saying they "belonged" to either. It's a unique album in Nightwish's catalog (and their darkest for obvious reasons).

Emppu's time of doubt actually occured around 2001, a really rough time for the band. Their first bassist, Sami Vänskä, was let go, due to missing appointments and not really showing enough commitment. Emppu had started complaining about feeling like just a "hired gun". In an article a few years ago, Tarja stated that this was for her the start of things going downhill. Tuomas called their labels and unofficially declared that Nightwish was done and that he might do another album, but he'd never again perform with them live. Luckily a hiking trip with good friend Tony Kakko (formerly of Sonata Arctica) gave Tuomas a change of heart.

this is the mid point of the "Vehicle of Spirit" tour for "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" the album they released in 2015. like i said before, NW's first time ever playing Wembley. was a week before Christmas. Tuomas said in an interview it was almost 18 years to the day of their first ever gig, a New Years Party. 17? 18? 19? their 20th anniversary album "Decades" (the 2018 show in B.A.) came after this, so was one of those. from the notes of another reactor, Tank The Tech, definitely worth a watch. guitar and pyro tech. Emppu has played that custom ESP EV - 1 guitar since he became exclusively sponsored by them in 2004. according to his guitar tech, they switch out all the hardware on it before each tour. Emppu fun facts: 5'3", Judo Master. Floor is every bit a super athlete like any other pro whatever doing it. she's a super heavyweight.

Ah - one if my 2 faves ( live Ghost River too). The studio version of this song as performed by Anette was a good, clean and polished version. The beauty of Floor is that she takes Nightwish songs as sung by either Tarja or Anette and truly takes them to 11. This band us just unworthy great. Empuu never does any more or less than what the song needs. I love Kai. Jukka is an unbelievable showman and fantastic drummer and I was sad when he stepped back. Kai is in my opinion the only drummer who could have stepped in and carried on. Jukka was like the incredible hulk of the band and just smashed everything. Kai is Dr Strange - calm, cool and collected but equally effective.

I am enjoying the heck out of your reactions!!! I only have one big question....Why hasn't the U.S. Music community embraced Nightwish? They are, from what I have heard and seen, wildly popular in Europe, and other parts of the world. But you can't get a radio station here in Austin Texas...where music is embraced.... to play a single song?
If you look at the amount of "RUclips" channels there are that react to Nightwish...it's amazing. I know I have broadened my listening habits because they have reacted to other bands, like Within Temptation, and I have found that I enjoy their music too!
I am not a young listener either, as I am 64, disabled ( spinal problems, I cannot walk without assistance. ) and don't get out much. So my art, I am a landscape artist, and music keep me sane!!

I'm putting together a little FAQ about radio and the music industry in the US and how it operates to some extent. Basically, it all boils down to relationships within the industry and how much effort is put behind the marketing of the song/band. In 1 month as a Music Director for an Active Rock station, I would get over 1k songs submitted by varying labels, reps, management, even directly from bands who don't have a team. And there are many valid reasons it's run the way it is currently run. Like I said, I'm trying to shape a video to answer a bunch of radio questions folks have asked.
      Cheers from Nashville!!

@@TheWyldesidewithEricClark Understood very well Eric. Unfortunately this business model that drives the American music scene is a big part of the decline of creative and inspirational music. Music is an artform based on individual and collective creativity and emotion. In my opinion, this has been, and is being cancelled in every way possible. Music groups/bands are sidelined in favor of producers who find or create canned music for pop divas and add electronic computerized soundscapes that lack all humanity in favor of perfect timing and pitch. Such boring and uninspiring crap! Down with autotune and beat correction.
Bring back the original FM format with the deep cut tracks and no time limitations. Top 40 is what kills music. It is not about the songs. It is all about selling advertising. Under these guidelines, there would be no Mona Lisa, Beethoven's 9th, Grieg's Peer Gynt, and on and on. Hell, Floyd might have died on the vine with the current system. Tragedy!
There are exceptions, but rarely on the radio. I stopped listening 25 years ago. Freedom of expression is shackled and dying.
"Life without music would be a mistake"! 😞😟
