In Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts you play as the head of a navy doing what the head of navies do best - spend entirely too much money on holes in the water, or, in laymans terms, ships. You can design very stupid things. I do this.

Not entirely true.
Tsingtao and the central city of Manchuria had a german presence and brought their culture and industry along with them, training the Chinese army and supplying them in some instances, which would continue into the 1930s.
South America would hire German advisors and give safe passage to their families as early as the 1910s, and would adopt german equipment which would persist well into the late 1940s.
Also it should say something about Tex's tunnel vision that he focused on getting bigger cannons but didn't get oil fueled engines until the 1920s were already ensuing.

Inspired by this series, i've started my own ridiculous Austria-Hungary misadventure. I modded the initial battleship the austrians get to be a 72000 ton barge. The idea is that i can't build any later battleships, because that would be a disgrace to the great and venerable Hapsburg. So i'm going to to see how long i can keep cramming new tech into it.

Could you imagine an Ultimate Commander Battlemech game? Fighting through the different era's of Battletech but coordinating attacks, land grabs, and making different models of mechs instead of boots on the ground action. That would be cool.

Did the Wide Tom #2 get sunk because the fleet it was in didn't have destroyers? When it does fleet engagement it looks like it doesn't count ships in the vicinity, only those directly attached to a task group? Or am I misunderstanding it.

Newbie question: if your main guns are over-penetrating, is it worth to consider switching over to HE rounds?
Certainly worth considering, but it depends on how much they're over-penetrating and the penetration qualities of your AP and HE rounds. That is, you might go from putting holes in both sides of the boat with AP to little more than scouring paint with HE, albeit with a chance of setting fires.

You need units with anti submarine ability in the fleet group under in order to protect your ships. The fleet groups act independently. So to protect your battle ships, you need destroyers attached to the ships.
It's worth noting you don't actually have to have any anti-submarine _weapons_ to sink subs. I often have sonar mounted on my battleships because of pesky twenty kilometer ranged torpedoes on destroyers and cruisers, but the sonar _also_ allows the battleships to sink subs.
there is a mod that makes it so no hull goes obsolete which makes it so you can keep building and using the old balsawood torpedo boats of yesteryear even after you research something "better"
though that mod is likely out of date it hasn't been updated in a year

So about convoys: the game generates older ships to guard yours, basically to simulate second-line ships on escort duty without making you actually manage that
it can be quite funny if it includes crappy export designs you never built for your own use, though
they may be tied to ships you sold to other countries, i'm not sure
This is something I've never seen; yes, if you have allied ports nearby they'll send ships to protect convoys, but they're tagged and flagged for the ally.
