    On the Star Trek uniforms... Yeah, with a phaser or disruptor shot resulting in either a clean miss or a hard kill, about the only thing you'd still want to consider armoring against would be things like fire and shrapnel. Beyond that, you could have your guys in comfortable gear that maximizes range of motion. I'm imagining something like a Jedi's loose tunic, but with a gunslinger's quick-draw holster on one hip for the phaser.
    ...Just make sure you give them pockets. I'll never understand why some costume designer figured no one would need or want pockets in the future.

      That is pretty much the same situation as we had in both world wars.
      And as it turns out artillery is still a factor, so you want helmets to save people from rocks falling on their heads, and want sturdy clothing that protecks you from the kudzu when you are prone in a ditch. Knee and elbow pads optional.
      Ghis ia of course only if you are considering ground combat.

    • @tba113
      @tba113 2 года назад +3

      @@ineednochannelyoutube5384 Yeah, pretty much. Best to protect against those dangers you actually can do something about, and train to avoid the rest. Since plasma-based computers tend to explode during combat, Starfleet could benefit from something that mimics the function of the anti-flash hoods and (relatively) light body armor used by modern navies when they expect trouble, even if the redshirts never leave the ship.
      It's jumping universes a bit, but one of the Thrawn novels had the crew of a Chiss warship all put on armored pressure suits as part of going to full battle stations. Given how often we see random unlucky crew in Trek get blown out of a hull breach to die horribly in the vacuum of space, something similar might not be a bad idea for any space-based force.

    With the star trek chat, what with hologram technology being something you CAN use physically to magic up tools and weapons, and replicators to do what the Cardassian did earlier on in DS9 to replicate a phaser turret into the command centre, you might have to imagine that a fully militarised star fleet would look more like an army of techno wizards of death then they would marines with rifles.

    My oldest said something to his sister the other day that is one of the most profound, meaningful things I’ve ever heard. He told her this after she came home from a bad day at school and thinking that her classmates all were making fun of her and that nobody would ever want to be her friend. He told her “It doesn’t matter what other people think of you. It only matters what you think of you. But, I think your awesome and I love you and I’d still think that even if I wasn’t your brother.”
    He’s 13. I HAVE NO IDEA how I managed to raise a kid that kind. None at all.
    But his advice is still sound. Just be you Tex. Based on subscriber alone that’s good enough for nearly 90,000 people.

    Tex's comment about being a 911 dispatcher reminds me of my time as a phone tech for a cable company. We had shrieking, screaming, death threats, racial slurs, along with fake calls from management that were extra vicious. The difference is none of it matters. It's just cable TV. That was an utterly draining job and I'm still dealing with the mental health effects after many years. Granted it was only one of the damaging call center jobs I've had.

      Unfortunately the current culture is that people expect things when they shout. I too was raised to expect things when I shouted - primarily a clip round the ear from my parents or a fist to the face if I was mouthy to the wrong person. I refuse to raise my voice to someone working in a call centre and will generally try to be as understanding as possible. If I'm particuloarly annoyed I will make sure that the person I'm speaking to knows it has nothing to do with them. That's just basic courtesy.

    As someone who spent five years as a 911 dispatcher, I must agree it has a weird effect on your perception of events. You're a step removed from an endless chain of horrible accidents and actions, for hours on end, night after night. I quit because the stress of feeling I wasn't good enough at it to help people more kept building up, even though there was no real reason to feel that way. To this day, I can't take much seriously in my current line of work (casino business) because so little of it matters. It's just money and paperwork. You can fix it all later, and even if you don't fix it, it still probably doesn't matter.

Was up to 3 crusiers vs 8BB, 8CA, 10CL and 12TB....and started at 1km, haha....they managed to knock out one to 3 engines on each one, dropped my stucture to 70-80% and my floatability to like 92%, mainly with their torp salvos at point blank range, was gonna try 2 against those numbers, then up their numbers if I still won, will be another day.

    As a (almost) lifelong Utah resident, I can somewhat explain about the weirdness of Utah.
    The main thing you need to know is that Utah's history is very much tied to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (referred to at times as Mormons. I will be referring to them as just The Church from this point on). If you want to do a bit more of a deep study, it's going to come up.
    The reason why the state song is titled "This is the place" is because it was what the then president of the church said when he entered the Salt Lake Valley. The Church was at that point in time looking for a place to settle where they could worship without persecutions from others as they had in Missouri and Illinois. They were actually planning on leaving the United States, but then the US won the Mexican-American war, making the land now United States soil. (Also, something to look up from this time would be the Mormon Battalion, a group tied to the war (though they never actually fought), the Latter-day saints, and the california gold rush)
    Anyway, Brigham Young, the leader of the Church at the time, didn't actually know where they were going to stop and settle. He said he'd seen it in a vision, and that he'd know it when he saw it. So, when they reached the Salt Lake Valley, they stopped and began to settle what became the state of Utah. So if something about utah seems strange, the history behind it is probably tied to the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    "We all have our battles and daily struggles. I never want to take away or lessen another persons trials and challenges. However if everyone can laugh about it, all the better than letting it fester."
    But I'm also a sh!tbag so my opinions aren't all that important.

    Fun bonus Utah fact (that I'm not putting with my other comment so you don't have to slog through it): There is actually a type of insect called the Utah Cricket. Know scientifically as Anabrus simplex, it's not actually a cricket, but a kind of brush cricket from the Rocky Mountains. However they are the crickets from the briefly mentioned Miracle of the Gulls, and will swarm along ground devouring any plant life they come across (and at times other Mormon Crickets).

    • @SonsOfLorgar
      @SonsOfLorgar 2 года назад

      So what you're saying is that nurturing biblical level swarms of Utah crickets enough to overwhelm the sea gulls and release them as a second wave might 'fix' Utahs mormon problem?

    Oh, about food....wisconsin cheddar is good, had a lot of it, definitely good, but the best cheddar cheese I've ever had, is Bandon, medium cheddar, seriously, if you can find it, try it, is the best, for mild cheddar. In my books, Vermont still takes the cake for sharp/extra sharp, with Tillamook as a close second. And yeah BF 1942, I miss it, such an epic game.

    @Tex My personal interest being ancient history (broadly B.C. around the Aegean) primary sources are extremely limited and logically they must be biased on some level. Something that I've struggled with regarding modern history is not just finding primary sources but being able to qualify the level of reliability in contemporary sources. From someone who has studied periods of time in which things like paper existed, is there some kind of rule-of-thumb you can provide as a minimum qualifier? I feel like I don't know enough to pass a 'sanity check' on information from the era.

    • @theblackpantslegion
      @theblackpantslegion  2 года назад +3

      Oh man, you have the worst period to look at in terms of this. Yeah, that which survives is going to be biased, at least that which was at the time mass published. Rome's fuckin' histories on the Germans for instance really show something interesting - morality play for the decadence and overgrowth of Rome and a chastisement in the same way - . As far as it goes, you're going to have to do the hardest thing - separate what might be realistic while also understanding the limitations of the point of view - either from perspective or education. Education then, well, having a far greater impact on someone's access to writing or being able to be understood.
      That being said - modern history is fucky as well. We generate NOISE on an equal level as we do actual information. For instance, if I want to find what the Hellreigel might have been - outside of say, the three photos it appears in from the bildarchive. What I -can- do is learn the gunsmiths, armorers, and everything else that would have had to been read in, or involved, and judge their capababilities.
      What I can't do is "Guess" and make stuff up. So I have to have some level of intense study of arms development of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, its arsenal system, etc. Modern History requires frequent rabbit holes. As far as you guys in the ancient sphere, wow, yeah, I couldn't do it. It'd make me insane.

    • @chriswoodend2036
      @chriswoodend2036 2 года назад +1

      @@theblackpantslegion I guess it's all natural inclinations but I find the signal-to-noise ratio with much of modern history completely overwhelming so hats off to you and Deputy. You guys keep talking and I'll keep googling so I kind of understand what the hell you guys just said. =)

    Sometimes it's god to know that something has a name. Imposter Syndrome, it is a thing you mentioned that struck me real hard, and I can see how it can affect people, including me. I feel like a failure sometimes when I look back and see all the missed opportunities, the lack of effort, laziness. I know now that may not be all true. I need to realize that I can make mistakes and it's not the end of the world in most cases. I know I've opened way up on this page, but I don't care for some reason. It might be that I trust the people around the BPL... Anyway, I love the content and my kid says "hi!" Yes we know you don't know us but we listen and watch as much as we can. Top Shelf Hamburger Helper... so in addition to the fresh pasta, good cheese, and whatever beef or mix you end up grinding... use some finely minced fresh garlic, gently browned in the fat runoff from the beef, then stir in salt, fresh black pepper, a little cayenne, smoked paprika, chili powder, a pinch of crushed red pepper, a little brown sugar (or sugar in the raw, just for a little of that molasses content), and corn starch, along with whole milk. If the cheese doesn't want to melt properly, and is clumping, sprinkle on a teaspoon of mustard powder and stir it in. Pull it when the pasta is still al dente. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley, and be ready to lick the bowl clean.
