This is not a serious take on naval history, but more a shitpost thereof. Please take everything I say with a grain of salt.
I'm sorry, Elmo Zumwalt.
The game is Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts: store.steampow...
In Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts you play as the head of a navy doing what the head of navies do best - spend entirely too much money on holes in the water, or, in laymans terms, ships. You can design very stupid things. I do this.
Music from Epidemic Sound - www.epidemicso...
1 hour in, and Tex mentions 20 inch guns on a ship. And my stunted mind immediately wants a super slow. 20 inch gun quad turret, put 4 turrets on a ship called....
The Urbanship
wouldnt it be the Uberboaten?
*gestures with toothpick* "What'cha gonna do with that 5-inch secondary, URBS?"
*fires a 4-turret quad 20-inch broadside*
*capsizes*
*refuses to elaborate*
*sinks*
To be a proper Urbanbote it would need to be a Quad 20 inch gun on the smallest possible vessel that can carry just that and a single 2 inch gun. Barely.
@@IamHattman I think that was Tex's "Torpedo Rowboat Fleet" he made as the Italians
never said it yet, but have watched damn near everything on your channel over the past year and a half, (yeah disabled army vet i have WAY to much free time). watching this series made me get the game and i love it. you all do good work, thank you.
Same here on the disabled bit. Seems like everytime I’m up late because of a fucked up hip keeping me awake he always seems to drop an episode to make it suck less. And yep, bought this because of his let’s plays lol
(Grumbling non-disabled vet dealing with mental health noises)
More or less in thecsame boat... pun unintended.
Yeah made me get the game too

"Refurbish the Habsburg"
An Austro-Australio-hungarian-everywhereelsian phrase to describe building something hilarious, something beautiful, something wasteful or performing a duty that no one understands why it is a duty, purely for duty's sake.
"Why is he just moving bags of sand over there? There is a wheelbarrow next to him"
"He has been refurbishing the Habsburg for 30 years, just like his dad, his brother and his uncle."
"Arent those the one guy?"
Putting a gas turbine in Habsburg, my only regret is that this game doesn't have nuclear reactors, because putting a nuclear reactor in the Habsburg would be absolutely hilarious
"Wider Tom?" *No.* Grosser Tom.
Der Grosser Tom.
I feel bad for the Aussies in this play through. They are marching across the outback fighting rage Roos and Drop Bears, meanwhile you are taking their ports and telling them to love Shrimp Paprikash on the barbie.
I am pretty sure Perun is having a fit.

Remember when Tex went on a mini rant about how you didn't need those super-heavy cannons? How Yamato-class armor didn't stand up to 16" shells?
A couple of additional decades as an admiral has a way of changing a man.
Yamato armor was testes once against an Iowa's 16 inch .50 caliber guns. The shell went straight through. FUN FACTS..... Note I said straight through. Yup, the test was set up under completely unrealistic conditions. A perfect 90 degree angle and essentially point blank range for a 16in naval rifle.
The man said it was more about style than substance.
Three whole hours of Habsburg. It's so much Habsburg you'll think you were in the world's shallowest genepool.

@@tovrobi5097 No. I know it seems like a good idea, but that’s because it’s an idea you have had in your head and thus should be a good idea. "He has drunk the Koolaid of torpedo." In my Japan playthrough, Britain made light cruisers with 42 torpedo tubes on the deck, and would use 10 boats at a time. It was atrocious bullet hell that forced me to build some crazy gunboat destroyers to counter that madness. 4.2" guns in bulk for everyone!
Fun Austria fact:
The _modern_ austrian armed forces are widely considered to be so bad (tiny, laughably underfunded and depending on untrained conscripts to hold the line) that their most effective use in case the country gets invaded would be to hand them over intact to the enemy to severely degrade their combat ability.
By contrast The Austro-Texian Empire is doing pretty well :P.
Dropped almost exactly 3hrs before I'm off work. Hope nothing critical breaks until then
20 inch guns?! Time to make…Urbanboten.
"do we get a medal?"
Gives medals jagged pieces of ships as they are being scrapped. "Here, now go find a new job"

Don't ask why I was browsing random RUclips videos at 3am on a worknight, but I was XD
Thanks, Tex, for all this crazy and zany shit you do. And now to see what shenanigans ol' Austria-Hungary got up to this time!
There is a clear progression in the evolution of Toms: Long Tom, then Wide Tom, and finally Deep Tom.
"Hapsburg is getting a gas turbine, some of you are screaming" - Tex, thinking we hate it "Well yeah the Hapsburg needs to go to space and fight the moon khizar" - my dumb ass who loves it
Admiral Tex, have you considered playing the Dreadnought Improvement Project mod? It's pretty good, and torpedoes have been turbocharged, so your torpedo boat swarm tactics would be hilarious.
Sounds like something I'd like to see him dip his toes into.
I wonder what Perun makes of this now. On the one hand, Croatian ship yards have been busy, but on the other hand his defence economics voice is going to be screaming inside at some ancient battleship shaped object you keep alive like a sad boat zombie.
Great episode Tex, loved the naval history, and it was fun seeing that the game actually has some difficulty to it. I was surprised when the two BB with the 17 inch guns got their butts handed to them. And of course the Hapsburg MUST LIVE! HAPS for EVER! yes yes! LETS GOOOO! Hawkmen! DIIIIVE!
3. Austrian. Hours.

Move ships to reserves.....where they can be sold for 30-40% of your initial outlay.
Construction tip, pause one of those battleships. You dont want to lengthen the construction time on all of your ships and thus pay more money.
Your BCs could be reworked as heavy cruisers given the tonnage.
Never use mark I guns. 17" or not.
Never ever.
If you check the screen, Tex is still playing in 1.4; mothballing and selling your own ships was introduced in 1.5.
To be fair, serving in the Hapsburg would be considered extremely lucky, *taking into account it has been through like 8 wars and twice as many refits without ever seeing action and all.*
Looking forward to Farto being the absolute backbone of this navy
NO! NO HAPSBURG IRELAND!! Dammit Tex, ye've gone too far!! Also, lesser note, no Hapsburg Isle of Man... This is true madness now...
"... a tumblehome that crests 30 knots and blazes towards them."

You were right about this game being great for autism. I hope they work in not only submarine combat but naval aircraft as well. I want to put seaplane catapult launchers on my ships for spotting.
It may have been most of a century, but the core rule of Hapsburg naval warfare - when you have no more torpedoes but one working engine, you have one last torpedo.
Mr Pants can you up the sound it is very low and i got all settings on max. (Edit: I am an idiot, sound is ok...)
Tex: How many times can you make boat autists scream?
The Hapsburg: Yes.
We aren't mad at all, until we hear "shrimp on the barbie" XD
Say what you want about the Habsburg, but its the most stable and seaworthy thing Tex has ever designed.
“No you get a new job also
Your medal *throw* “
Totally a admiral that’s so done kind of move.
That constant Habsburg refit is like when you see people kitbash a crab
*internal screaming every time Tex uses a Mark 1 gun because it's big*
"This is not a great ship, this is just a tribute."
Brilliant.
I've actually seen the AI design Destroyers, with Diesel II engines, and Coal as fuel, and somehow they worked.
Way back in the days of mediocrity, known as the Carter Administration, they actually set up a test program to turn coal into liquid fuel for the US Navy - because that was the era of the first Arab Oil Embargo, when we were still importing a crap-ton of oil, because we hadn't yet discovered all the oil and natural gas reserves we now know about, and OPEC had us by the short hairs - and gasoline went from 30 cents per gallon, to the utterly outrageous price of 80 cents per gallon.
Union Pacific also experimented with a turbine locomotive that ran off coal dust. GM also put a coal dust turbine in a car. Neither project lasted long.
I can't help but notice the masterful tactic of expending all the tubes in the destroyer fleet then before the launchers can reload feed them one by one into the guns of a battleship.
Hey Tex. Do you think Germany would have done better if they told all subs to prioritize warships rather than cargo ships? I have arguments with my friends over this.
More of an opinion that going after the warships is potentially a war-winning move but if it went wrong, they'd have been jumped on.
Problems include that A) the Germans didn't know where the warships would be and B) warships, even the old vintage ones, were faster than even a surfaced u-boat. So, y'know, good luck getting the opportunity to even take a shot.
You could spend some time with a game like _Silent Service_ to get a bit of a feel for the thing.
And the US boats in _Silent Service_ had it on easy mode compared to the Germans; the Brits and Americans took convoys and escort duties more seriously than the IJN ever did, and the German Type VII u-boats were smaller, slower, less well-armed and had less range and fewer reloads than the American fleet boats.
Nor do I see how it would be 'war winning' even if it was somehow effective; the only thing that makes any kind of sense is the hope that maybe the RN wouldn't be able to contain the German and Italian surface fleets? To what end? Shooting at merchantmen with guns instead of torpedoes, and since you've got fewer surface ships than you do subs you've got a more limited number of possible intercepts, all the while being more visible to Allied air recon?
I just don't see it.
Erzherzogin is a title, literally translated to arch duchess. The pronounciation is: Er-tz-her-zo-gin.
Empire Research Director: Thanks to prioritization, and some sacrifices in other areas, we have developed and equiped our war-ships with the cream in detection and range-finding, Radar. In conjunction with our capacities in high-caliber weapons and extended range torpedos, our ships will be able to engage from maximum range uncontested.
Admiral Tex: DRIVE ME CLOSER!!
I WANT TO HIT THEM WITH MY SWORD!!
Tex!! You keep forgetting about reload technology! You've left it off EVERYTHING.
Look what you've done. You've made me the madman screaming in the comments!!

Hey, Stefanie didn’t get born into the Hapsburg family so you can call her Ms. Stefanie. It’s Crown-Princess Archduchess Stefanie, thank you very much
Tex: “The time of the cruiser is over, the time of the Destroyer and Submarine has begun.”
Also Tex: “My Cruiser design is flawless.”
26:00 I dunno, I'd imagine being assigned to that thing would be a highly prestigious and desirable assignment, comparable to being assigned to USS Constitution in the US Navy (yes, it's still technically an active warship, and competition to be assigned to the crew is fierce).
I know it is for entertainment value of the viewers but I would have rather seen that DD fight at the one hour forty minute mark how its meant to be fought. Your DDs dropping torps at nearly max range and then you wait until you see the booms. Rince and repeat until they are all sunk while using your ÜBERLEGENE stealth & speed. At least for the start it would be nice to see them used properly to their strength.
When I hear "Applejack", I think of "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" (Applejack was the password to unlock the hidden mob records on the computer)
The Austerity Class charging in in dual echelons, going full send was majestic.
Personally I didn't really come away with too high a view on Apple Jack, I had a bottle of Laird's in fact. Now it wasn't bad however for the price it just came off as a generic brandy. Maybe Bottle and Bond or 100 proof has more of a distinctive flavor but stuff like Old Grand Dad I noticed had a lot more character in, Grouse for awhile I was getting at around the same price and is my favorite for price point. Then again my go to whisky was "Mellow Corn Straight Corn Whisky." Was for the longest time a more into Swiss Absinthe and Jamaican Rums.
funny to try to make two quad 14-inch turrets and one in the back-the original British plan for their 35,000-ton King George V battleships-and not being able to work that with 81,000 tons
A large naval action in 1939? No. Destroying two ports wouldn't do much and would expose the fleet to inland air attacks. With no CAP it would have made no sense. It's not the Pacific, everything except of Britain is land connected and Germany at that time had no colonies. Doing it after 1940 to intercept Swedish steel transports though...
Kaiser Tex has decreed all prawns will now be called shrimp. We the people of the Aussie-Hungarian Empire will dutifully follow his command.

Today I learned that the Austro-Hungarian Navy invented touhou, and that in 1982, they defended the Falklandinseln against the Pan Patagonian junta.
Hello Tex! I don't comment very often, but I thought I'd speak up today. I wanted you to know that I've truly been enjoying this dreadnaught series as well as all your battletech gaming and informative productions. It really lifts my spirits to see a new video posted and I sit a while before watching, almost wanting to save it so I have something nice to look forward to. I know a lot of your productions are labour intensive so don't want you to feel pressured to just crank out the content like some soulless automaton - quality takes time. In this age of an endless, mindless assault of drivel (especially the AI crap), seeing the effort you and your friends put into these videos is heartening. I also suffer from bad reflux, had displastic cells in what was left of my esophagus, but things have improved with diet, medication, and time. I know some of the pain you must endure, you have my sympathy. You and the Black Pants crew are valued by many and you deserve it. There. Back to the shadows for me! :D

Funnily enough I had started an AustoHungary run a bit before you started this playthrough. Got to 1910ish and hit a glitch that sent my unrest to the moon and bricked my playthrough.
Hey Tex, you mentioned some literature in one of the previous videos. It sounded really interesting but I forgot what it was called. Was it "Citadels of Iron" ?
My only issue with the Hapsburg isn't that it's so old, it's that you're not actually using it for anything. "Let them fight." At least bring it along for invasions :)

Upvoted for the Laird's pour... Curious to check out your whiskey reviews. 😅
text just needs to stop building "ranged" ships he always rushes into point-blank, and then loses because his boats were designed for ranged combat, did it with the BBs and DDs in this.
Wh- Do youse taunt me? I don't know what this 'shrimp' is Tex.

2:25:22 "Their torpedoes are hitting my AI ships..." NOPE
Those are the idiot AI ships in the back torping the one in the front. The AI on this game sets its mind on a track and does not change. It either torps toward the enemy irregardless of what is in that direction, or never closes to torpedo range..... either of which is usually a bad idea
RIP Wide Tom, your little sister Grand Tom will punish the English
Honestly, if I came out of an academy and had to choose between disposable suicide torpedo haulers or an old relic that sits in port and only comes out for parades I would choose the relic, because I would get to put in my time and live.😋😅😂
I think it's impossible to save them.... it must be hard coded or something as I was doing a great job until the game divided by 0.
Before you end it no matter the reason you should have the Habsburg have one final fight. Promise?
1:40 So what you're telling me is that Tom was violated by a rowdy group of submariners?
I mean... I'd rather serve on a ship from 1890 that has more inches in armor that most modern battleships than on some flimsy cruiser that gets oneshot!
On the subject of boat names, not that I'll likely ever own one, but if I do, it'll have some silly, punny name like "Miss Spent 401(k)" or something.
I have to wonder, what's the most destructive ship you can make with only single gun mounts?
Some how Germany just took norther France withing the first 2 years in the new game I just started, I do not like how this is going.
