  • The Seymour Duncan Vise Grip is a studio-grade compressor designed for guitarists who want to take control of the dynamics of their sound, from a subtle smoothing-out of peaks and valleys to the most squished and pinched extremes and everywhere in between. The Blend knob lets you add as much or as little of the original signal as you like to the compressed sound, while the Mid/Full/High lets you choose the character of the blended signal. The Sustain knob determines how long your notes will ring out and the Attack control regulates how quickly the compressor reacts to your initial pick attack. Higher settings give you a late attack that lets your picking dynamics come through before the compression kicks in. And the Volume control does more than just let you match the output with your bypassed sound: you can also use it as a boost while taking advantage of the Blend and Mid/Full/High controls.

    Very versatile pedal! Looks like it does what the compressor section of the Philosopher's Tone does only better, cheaper, and in more ways! I am definitely thinking of putting this in the loop of a Marshall amp!

    Would it have use for a hi gain amp? maybe for giving sustain to the signal

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  9 лет назад

      +MarkIV19 Of course! The pedal compresses the signal before the gain of the amp, providing a different sound than the non-compressed signal. It will add sustain as well as a percussive 'pop' to the notes.

    Two problems after buying this pedal, 1) Notes never sustain like shown in this video. 2) Too much noise/hiss with high setting on sustain knob. Any idea how to record like in this video with that sustain without noise?

    I just purchased pedal online. Sooo...playing live through a Marshall JCM 800 should I go through efx loop or thru the front end. Im pretty clueless in that regard...Advice would be appreciated! Thanks!!!

      Kevin Raabe Incidentally, Im hoping to utilize pedal more for a volume boost during solos

    • @kertackle
      @kertackle 9 лет назад

      Kevin Raabe The norm is to put the compressor before the preamp (not in the loop) but some people put compressors in the FX loop and blend the compressed post preamp signal using the mix knob on parallel loops. This can bring up some nasty noise on heavier settings but with the Vise Grip, it has a blend feature which is cool for pre and post loop use along on serial and parallel FX loops...so the short answer is "Wherever it sounds best to your ears!"

    I just got this pedal and i'm bummed at how noisy the sustain knob is when I turn it up. Is there any trick to modding it to be quieter?

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 лет назад +2

      +Guy James The pedal itself isn't noisy at all. However, it does boost the sounds of your guitar, so that is most likely the source of the noise. Compressors sound best with the sustain knob somewhere around the middle, so you don't hear the 'pumping' that you get with a high compression rate.

    • @seymourduncan

      You will need to switch out the pickup rings for 2 screw mounts, but the humbucker size is the same.

    can we use this instead of a "sustainer" or "sustainiac" circuit ? I mean, can the note be sustained "forever" ?

    • @XneverstopfightingX
      @XneverstopfightingX 9 лет назад +2

      No, it won't work like the sustaniac system, it will give you a great amount of sustain, but the sustainiac sends micro vibrations to the string to keep the note ringing out.

    Does this have to go into the fx loop ? I'm new to the world of pedal and signal chains

    • @kertackle
      @kertackle 9 лет назад

      No it doesn't need to go in the FX loop. But because of the pedals ability to let you control the mix of the compressed and dry signal along with level control, it means its more loop friendly...so you have much more control of your dynamics!

    • @seymourduncan

      Lare Clark A compressor essentially evens things out (squishing down down some levels and expanding others). The result is similar a Vise Grip (the tool). :)
