Coles Omega is the clear winner but it’s more than a stretch to say that without Bond it would STILL be the best sports watch of the 90s. Nope, Brosnan (and more importantly the deal that Omegas CEO at the time made with the franchise) absolutely made Omega, arguably even saved them from sinking into complete irrelevance as a brand.
The Rolex guy took some hard L’s and was very defensive about it 😂 I’d say the seiko and Omega are closest, but Omega was just everywhere in the 90’s. They really blew back up.
No question---the three most popular brands. I'm not sure if I agree with Danny's argument. He works really hard on making a point about his Explorer, snarks and all, while the other two just drives home their point without breaking a sweat. SKX and SMP300 is definitely borne out of the 90's.
Agree on the Explorer, however the SKX design is closely based on the 7548 Quartz dive watch that came out in 1978, so it's not truly 1990s unlike the Seamaster
As much as I love the explorer (own the 39mm MKII dial), the best 90’s watch represented on the table is Cole’s Omega. It just yells 90’s. Ps @Cole - Go Noles!
I own the Explorer, but I wouldn't say it's heavily associated with or screams 90's on any level. I think of the Omega as more of a 90's icon. The industrial design of the Omega is by far the most 1990's watch on the table.
@@leesmusic1 Yeah, you're probably right re the Pepsi besel. But I think at a high-level having a TAG, an Omega and a Seiko is a great reflection of the 90's. Unless we start including brands like Fossil 😂 but they are more of a fashion brand than sports. But Fossil was absolutely everywhere in the 90's lol.
Omega and Seiko are tied for me, the SKX is iconic for those entering the watch game in that era, and the Omega was something with huge exposure to aspire to. I immediately dismissed the Rolex based on how the points about it were delivered, that was just pure pretentious behavior.
The Rolex Explorer, is like my grail watch, maybe one day I'll get it. I've had an SKX013, which I loved for a number of years, and considering the movement, kept excellent time, practically within COSC. But as a pure 90s sports watch, the Omega wins this, easily.
Danny really brought a watch that’s been mostly the same since the 50 and argued for its 90s-ness by leaning on its global fanfare based on only a single country (Japan)? I think it’s a toss-up between Cole’s seamaster and James’ SKX007.
The Omega stands out as most 90s. At the time, probably the only one I noticed and knew about during the 90s. Hey, that Explorer. Be careful with the lume in the running seconds hand. It looks like it could fall off. I can see through the edge of one side of the lume pip. You can see between the video time 23:44-23:46 The text on the dial shows through a small open sliver around one side of the lume.
Without a doubt and hands down it would be Coles Omega Seamaster. It is definitely a classic timepiece and honestly iconic not just from the 90’s but also currently.
There’s a reason that the Explorer design is often considered a “timeless” design. Rolex makes incremental changes over decades to keep the design elements very similar. Trying to argue that the Explorer can be classified by a decade is a losing argument.
If we’re talking analog watches of the 90s, I think you’d have to go with a Tag or a Victorinox “Swiss Army Watch.” If we’re talking overall watch of the 90s, it’s the Timex Ironman Triathlon.
Omega Seamaster is DEFINITELY the one that screams 90s - not just for people around during that time (when it was everywhere) but when we look back at the watch, it looks very 90s. The others don’t have it.
Omega all the way. The only real 90s design there. Rolex is from 50s 60s. Seiko looks older too. Not made in 90s but which one defined the 90s clearly the seamaster SMP blue dial.
Fantastic episode and picks for the best 90’s sports watch. Also, I’m going to assume that the “Converge” that you partnered with on this episode is not the metal band.
I love 3 on 3s - the one with Rolex, GS and OMEGA entry level video made me buy my first Rolex OP 36. However, I am not sure about the competition element that’s introduced in the later videos. I feel like sitting down and talking watches is just great by itself.
In the 90s I saw more Timex Ironmans (Ironmen?) and Expeditions than anything. Middle of nowhere in the Midwest to the White House, they were everywhere.
Great episode! Definitely a two watch contest between the Omega and Seiko, but the Explorer is one of my favorite watches of all time and the only Rolex that I would consider wearing. Great debate hearing the two GMT/dive watch nerds gang up on the Rolex nerd! :-)
The explorer may have been the 90’s watch for rich people .. but I’d never even heard of Rolex until much later .. whereas seiko and omega were prevalent. And the 90’s owes Bond a LOT .. without that I’d not have known it existed. I suppose this all depends how rich you were.
That Seiko 5 totally matches the experience of being a teenager in the 1990s and the type of clothing / accessories I might have bought. It just looks like it goes perfectly with a puffer vest, JNCO jeans, a bucket hat and Dr Martin boots.
Ok look Danny. It's unfair to call an Explorer a 90s watch. It doesn't matter that your watches particular referance was released in the 90s. It's really more of an update to a watch that has been around since 1953. That being said. It's my favorite of the 3 😇 and an excellent choice no matter the conversation.
Wow. Definitely skx annihilates 2 decades of luxury. It is funny that a cheap tool watch made by a normal japanese watchmaker was more appreciated than the “luxury “ brands. No offense to rolex though and the whole swiss watches. That speaks something about the brand. Own 3 brand new skx and is true. It really makes the most luxurious pieces to self doubt and its value.
Omega. If you’re going to do a Rolex for the 90’s, it’s the yachtmaster. Not a popular choice, the entire watch creation was born in 1992 and was Rolexes direct move into having a luxurious sports model, not just A precious metal tool watch. It’s taken 30 years for it to be a desired watch but it was born In the 90’s and popular with celebrities at the time.
Dear Danny you are (deep breath) wrong! Plain and simply. I say the Seiko is actually the watch of the 2000s because that is when people were falling in love with it. The watch of the 90s is the OMEGA Seamaster because as Cole said that is when it was everywhere and when it was most desired.
Wow. I managed about three minutes. Much ado about nothing. So much shallow hype. If any of this REALLY matters to you, step back and take a look at your life. Out.
I hate Rolex. Only the Daytona actually looks good to me... all the rest look decent while costing sums of money that would make anyone blush. Explorer has to be the worst looking watch at the highest price point. Only Hublot makes watches with that high of an aesthetic:price point ratio
The SKX is the watch of the 3 that has generated the most watch sales and introduced a new generation to watches. I mean people who don't even dive wear this watch. That says enough about it right there. With its ability to be highly customizable it allows someone to wear something more than a watch. It's a unique statement about who they are.
23:44 in the close up of the explorers second hand is there a gap between the lume and the metallic circle which the lume is inside. I've never seen this before. I don't know if it's just a reflection or something but now I wanna know if my brain is playing tricks!
Cole is wrong. Bond is the reason that watch is what it is. Come on. It was indorsed by a movie star and seen all around the world. The Seamaster is loved because people want to feel like Bond.
Great to see this series return! As for the show down: the seamaster is the runaway watch of the 90s both in design language and in cultural presence. That being said, I would say that James is definitely right about the influence of the skx within the watch community. Fantastic intro to the video btw
Interesting that no one has brought up the omega that started this entire watch magazine? Might not be a more 90s watch then the Omega Speedmaster mk40, I think Ben would agree!
Shoot. This is a really good video. Impressed that the producers found a 90s-looking room. That detail is not lost.
Very observant
Whoa! It’s Mr “Why did you sell the Santos?!” All jokes aside, big fan of the channel!
@@ArchDrake Thanks. I almost just banned you from the internet.
Dude in the middle looks shot out

Nope, Brosnan (and more importantly the deal that Omegas CEO at the time made with the franchise) absolutely made Omega, arguably even saved them from sinking into complete irrelevance as a brand.
It still had to be a great watch in the first place!
For a Rolex, I think the quintessential 80's-90's look would be a 2-tone OP or Datejust
or a 5 digit polar EXII
This all day long. That or 16610.
those ain't steel sport watches though
Danny is so full of it. James has a great pick, but Cole's choice is easily the watch of the 1990s.
The Rolex guy took some hard L’s and was very defensive about it 😂 I’d say the seiko and Omega are closest, but Omega was just everywhere in the 90’s. They really blew back up.
The SKX was an everyman tool watch. Utilitarian to its' core. Tool watch in the truest sense. Accessible to the many rather than the few.
lol they really just sent Danny out to die.
Also, Tag Heuer F1 should be here instead of the explorer
the Omega is clearly the winner, but I'd be happy to have any one of them ;-)
No question---the three most popular brands. I'm not sure if I agree with Danny's argument. He works really hard on making a point about his Explorer, snarks and all, while the other two just drives home their point without breaking a sweat. SKX and SMP300 is definitely borne out of the 90's.
I do not understand at all what makes the Explorer a watch of the 90s.
I mean, the Omega guy has a point but the Seiko guy wins by a large margin. The Rolex guy is absurdly wrong.
Agree on the Explorer, however the SKX design is closely based on the 7548 Quartz dive watch that came out in 1978, so it's not truly 1990s unlike the Seamaster
Not to mention the hideous hair. But hey man, he’s still got style.
@@robertschmidt9584 Now that's just mean! Nothing against the person, just disagree with the opinion.

explorer is great and all but let's be honest no one was rocking those in the 90's. The SMP however, even now the new one's still have the 90's look
I agree. The explorer wasn’t popular until recently.
The quintessential 90s watch should be some model of G-shock. 90s kids you guys know what I'm talking about...
i happen to own versions of all three of these watches, they are all fantastic
Omega for the win ... Defined the 90s (in my humble opinion). Seiko to place and Rolex to show. Great content as always 😁 cheers!!
LOVED this one! Three of my favs commenting on camera on their 90s watches. So great!
The Rolex Explorer, is like my grail watch, maybe one day I'll get it. I've had an SKX013, which I loved for a number of years, and considering the movement, kept excellent time, practically within COSC.

I'm glad I got my Skx 009 in 2018. It wasn't made in the '90s, but in January of 2018. It's my vacation watch ever since.
Same, got my skx013 in 2018 too and it’s been with me all over the world
The Omega is definitely the ultimate 90s watch. Although I would also consider an Ebel as typically 80/90s. As well as s 16613 bluesy / clown

Omega seamaster 300 screams 90s. Excellent watch.
Without a doubt and hands down it would be Coles Omega Seamaster. It is definitely a classic timepiece and honestly iconic not just from the 90’s but also currently.
The Seamaster Diver 300m and the TAG Heuer Link are the only 2 designs from the decade that are still successful today!
HODINKEE must be testing various creators right now.
There’s a reason that the Explorer design is often considered a “timeless” design. Rolex makes incremental changes over decades to keep the design elements very similar. Trying to argue that the Explorer can be classified by a decade is a losing argument.
Timex Indeglo and the 90s is the way to go!
I think a Tag Heuer instead of a Rolex would have been a better comparison amongst the other two
If we’re talking analog watches of the 90s, I think you’d have to go with a Tag or a Victorinox “Swiss Army Watch.” If we’re talking overall watch of the 90s, it’s the Timex Ironman Triathlon.
James and the iconic green jacket is back!!!
that seamaster 300m screams 90s most to me. Bond, Prince William and Lady Diana sort of vibe. very English for some reason...
Omega Seamaster is DEFINITELY the one that screams 90s - not just for people around during that time (when it was everywhere) but when we look back at the watch, it looks very 90s. The others don’t have it.
Totally agree.
Most 90's is Omega. Most affordable is Seiko. Most classy is Rolex.
I'd call that quite a solid 3 watch collection

The best steel sports watch of the 90s was a TAG Heuer. Either F1 or 2000 series
Omega hands down, there's not even a discussion here
The guy with the explorer seems least likely to use the watch for its purpose 😂
23.46 ,it looks like the lume is falling from the Explorer's seconds hand, the Seamaster is definitely the most 90s
Omega and TagHeuer are the definitive 90s watches. Especially the 2 tone links and aquaracer.
Omega all the way....just the video game goldeneye alone made every kid in the 90s want a Seamaster

I’ll go with the omega all day to define the 90s
What inbox…what prize?
1 place: Cole and the Omega
2 place: Jamens and the SKX
3 place: Nobody
100% the Omega is the winner.
I VOTE FOR SKX AND OMEGA. The explo is too "under the radar" and no 90s style.
Rolex.. yawn, there's always that one dude lol seamaster and skx great 90s picks.

I'd personally pick the SKX as the most significant of the 90s, but I can see how the Omega could take it. The Explorer is a distant, distant third.
I had a Beretta Gt back n the day. I see more 90’s Seamasters around than I do Berettas. Thankfully….
how can a watch worn by a few be the iconic sports watch of the 90? Iconic for what? For the watch most people cant get? lol get outa here
The Omega is the 90’s
So sad the Rolex snobbery had to rear its head. Sure it was from 89 but it's a 90's watch. yikes!
The best sport watch of the 90s is not even featured here. It is the G-Shock DW6900.
I own 2 of these watches and I want the third. Guess I'm a 90's guy...
Peerllleeeeaaasseee…. THE sports watch of the 90s is the Panerai Luminor.
I will never not see that helium valve on omega ruins the watch in my opinion. The skx is the winner 90s icon
