What makes this and many Randy solos so special is that they were real. Yes, there was a missed note or something experimental that landed out of key at times. This was very early when 70s blues based pentatonic solos were evolving into shred, and this solo is representative of how that bridge was coming together.
Randy was experimenting. And it was beautiful. The critics on here who offer negative opinions don't seem to understand the full context.
Randy had exceptional talent and potential, and this clip is such a wonderful treasure that lets you see these moments unfolding.

There are many great players out there right now. Just the infrastructure, A&R, producers, management, how things were back then to refine and elevate ONLY a few of the best to the top, that is gone.
Now we all can put our materials out to the entire planet, humans' viewports have become saturated. Nothing, not even the best can stand head and shoulders above the next, because the next best is very close. That part has always been true, it's just that back then that crop of top notch players were relegated to staying in the clubs...the world never heard of them.
I've known three very top caliber players, they got there before age of 19, amazing, only a relatively few people got the chance to witness these guys. That was the 70s, early 80s, things are so different now.
In the environment now the top players can not seem to be mystical / magical, like back then. We have to listen in the current environment with this in mind.
The infrastructure that created the magic of that era is gone.

This little solo or actually jam no whammy bar and the pinches are not over done. Just a tone switch and pedal with perfect pinch harmonics. To me Eddie VanHalen is like a Jimmy Swaggart to an actual Guitar God like Randy Rhoads.
So hard to account Randy to Quiet Riot now. Randy made Ozzy after Ozzy was kicked out of Sabbath. LOL. Talk about a Shooting Star huh? A reference to a Bad Company song. He lit a lot of sparks in kids to be axmen.

Listen to 15yr old Randy jamming on youtube. Ronson feedback and pick slides on the treble strings. If you don't see the description of the video you'd think Rono walked in on the jam, playing a fire breathing guitar on the edge of feedback. Then Randy does the fast narrow vibrato and separates himself from Rono...but the influence is there.
Plus as mentioned above, Randy just about cloned Ronson's image.
I don't mean this with ill will. I'm glad someone paid tribute to the great Mick Ronson, especially that it was Randy. And Randy played on the verge of feedback too, like Ronson. Two of the greatest ever.

He was incredibly good at bending the neck for being such a little guy it's not easy to do just goes to show the skill set he had, I hate the word talent nobody has a special talent, he grew up in a musical family his mother was a music teacher which obviously helped. He was an amazing guitar player taken out in his prime. R.i P Randy Rhoads

Randy was on another Level, his guitar playing was just awesome, I don’t even think Hendrix, or Eddie Van Halen could come close to him, Randy was just a bad ass Guitar player, r i p Randy.

Randy was like a sponge with the guitar constantly learning. The way he would even admit to "hey I'm still learning , want to learn more and don't want to stop here". He was a very honest guitarist never said look at me I'm a guitar god or whatever. He hated doing solos like this though. He said it was just all flash for the kids The him at 25 years old well let just say this I'm 42 playing guitar and taking classes since I was 8 and teaching when I was older. I'm not even there yet lol. He would literally compose guitar note/chord progressions that are just extremely complex and thorough and they fitting the music so perfect. He used alot of chords not just power or bar chords or basic abcde chords for his rythym parts which was mainly what everybody else was doing in the heavy metal slash hard rock sounds back then . To this the day he still amazes me.Some in the rock industry back then most of guitarist didn't attack the learning of different styles. His fills were even brilliant he was substuite whatever chiors with a harmonic of that key. He used the aeolian scales,Hungarian scales and the Dorian scales.Hell he would use all three in one song. I can't stop talking or saying enough about Randy Rhoads.

@@sid3859 I've seen you play . I like messing with guys like you getting the all worked up you can finger tap realy good lmao. yeah let see you come up with stuff like Mr. Crowley and diary of a madman. Probably don't even know how to read music. There two types of guitar guy the ones that say Eddie was the best they probably can barley play guitar or sound average because all they spent there time on getting his amp sound vs learning or the ones who say Randy was and there probably respect the guitar and actually take time to learn to read music and play stuff instead of divebombs and smoke and mirrors stuff. Oh yeah and finger tapping thing he did always lol my 7 year old nephew can finger tap too. I will say one thing Eddie did and still has the best amp sound but far a the knowledge of guitar he is not on same planet as Rhoads.

David Wooderson yes Sir, he was a talented musician, some people are are just born with God given talent, I play guitar myself, been playing for a long time, but nowhere near the level Randy was, he was just an Awesome guitar player.

Eddie is my favorite, but it pisses me off when he says Randy ripped him off! Randy was his own beast and a scholar of music, he didn’t need to rip anybody off. But I imagine he was Eddie’s only competition!

Randy said he hated it cause he wanted to do a lot of different things but all anybody wanted to see was him play like Eddie and do tapping he hated that shit

Saw Randy at the Salt Palace during the Diary of a Madman tour. Some doves were released as part of Ozzy's stage show. As they flew around stage, couldn't help but think Ozzy might kill one (all the propaganda bs), but one landed on the head stock of Randy's guitar. He played the whole song while smiling at the bird. After the song he took it off and gave it to one of the stage hands. Was very cool and symbolic, I think there was a picture of the occurrence in the newspaper. Years later after Randy's death, the story was told to Ozzy by my friend who had been at the show and now had premium tickets to a late 80's Ozzy show. He was getting a photo with Ozzy after the concert as part of his ticket. Ozzy, short on time and being Ozzy, listened to the story about Randy and the bird, and then with no comment at all to my friend he looked at the photographer and said, in a complete Ozzy voice, "take the f**king picture" Ozzy being Ozzy, lol! Randy shredded as usual in that Diary show, never forget Crazytrain live. Ozzy gave Randy tons of attention on stage that night, I think its true, that had a pretty good relationship.
