@@wysmn I've seen a '99 F150 5.4L 2V that was a trade in at a dealer with over 400,000 miles, it wasn't a perfect runner but, it still had some guts, enough to light the tire from a stop. It was a rusted out hunk of garbage in way upstate NY or I would have bought it for a thousand bucks just to beat on in the back fields. I couldn't believe how well it ran and I checked the numbers on the block, it was the correct year and date to have been original to the truck if had been swapped it was done scientifically.
The brittle plastic looks like the insulation/sound deadening material the encapsulates a sort of closed cell foam on some of the Ford intakes. Not all of the motors had them but some did, in my experience with the 4.6 at least.
I love the Ford 4.6L between 98 and 03 in my opinion are the most reliable motors made by man. Really any Ford truck in said years is a real work of motor craftsmanship.

That is a "cool" idea using the heater bypass valve instead of all the work replacing the blend door. Their was a local F150 Super Cab from the late '90's (same body style as yours) with the 4.6L that had 999,999 kms and got recognition from Ford of Canada for the high mileage. Our local dealer had a big display about it. (I forget what they said the scan tool claimed the mileage was past that) At that mileage, the body was just staring to show signs of rust. Had a photo of it somewhere. Have fun with the truck!
Put a 4 link air ride on each axle. Then have all the lines share the same air Then your rear axle will distribute the weight equally to each axle. Much like a tandem leaf spring trailer. The equalizers distribute the same weight to each axle no matter what

There's a real simple trick..I'm willing to share the knowledge and in 5 minutes they'll all be out..even broke off flush with the head ones. Bust out the trusty Flux core gasless welder. Weld a fairly large glob right on top of the broken stud( it won't weld to the aluminum head.) Then take out your vice grips and clamp them to the glob and unscrew the glob along with the broken stud. The heat welding generates makes them come out like 🧈. Hasn't failed me yet .
That bad boy needs a deep cleaning, ocd panic engaged. Shame there isn't a way to make it a twin screw in the rear. A swap to a 5.4 4v (possibly with a blower), a strong 351w or stroker, 6.2L Boss, 5L Coyote or 7.3L Godzilla would be sick. My dream scenario would be to make it a long travel suspension, dual rear axle drive and no front wheel drive at all. Strengthen it up and have a mean "Pre-runner" that still has a functional bed and is reasonably practical for the street. I'm sure you're not going to take things even remotely that far. I still wouldn't waste money on a 2v when the junkyard has so many better treasures available.
He would have to get an axle with a pinion output like a Rockwell 2.5-5ton axle, there might be some type of smaller, lighter axle in an agricultural or industrial application with an output that allows a second axle or a PTO. The back axle could be the stock axle that's on there or a Stirling 10.25/10.5 from an F250LD, F250, F250HD, F350 or A Super Duty from the mid 80s to present.

Literally doing the exhaust manifold job on my 2001 f150 with the 5.4l it’s going ruff with 3 broken studs in my head. I’ve tried the welding trick with zero luck. Next I’m on to drilling and extracting the studs in theory. This job is absolutely miserable! If I fuck up good enough I’ll be buying a new head too. Yikes 👎🏻
@@guitargod66 Engine vacuum is used to put a slight vacuum on the sump (usually via the valve covers). The engine ultimately consumes the air and burns any oil mist it captures. The air has to come from somewhere. It comes from filtered and metered air before the throttle body. It's part of the mass airflow into the engine even though it doesn't get into the intake manifold via the throttle body. That's why it would be a vacuum leak if you open the oil cap.

Were the heads $300 a pair or each? By the time you count your labor and all the gaskets, fastners, ect. It makes no sense at all to waste a moment of your time on a weak sauce 5.4 2V, especially a non PI version...why not just grab a 6.2L out of a wrecked Super Duty or a 5L Coyote from a wrecked F150 with the 6sp auto, the ecu the harness and have something serious in that bad boy? Even a late 351w roller cam engine converted to Maf with some GT40/GT40P or cheap aluminum heads an aftermarket intake an OBD 2 comapatible or aftermarket equ like holley makes a lot more sense than mucking with one of those gutless wonders.
You describe all the work you've done on it and still haven't learned to leave ford's alone. I had one Ford in my life, a 1956 with a 296 V8 and it kept me broke. One Ford for me is three too many and I have hated them ever since. Found On Road Dead.

My brothers F-150 only has 490,000 miles on it, with no engine overhaul. It is a daily driver delivery vehicle. The Tranny was replaced at 100,000 miles, when he bought the truck.
Should call a bed cover company and tell them you have the 12foot bed tandem axle.

It wouldn't work. Only way to have 2 powered axles is to have a pass through differential with 2 pinions, 1 on each end. Good luck with the cost!

5.4 triton engines suck. The 4.6 lasts ALOT longer and doesn’t turn your spark plugs into missiles

i do 5.4 manifolds weekly. studs are easy to remove with a welder, some washers and nuts
