  • How challenging is it to be a police officer today? Hon. Associate Justice William W. Bedsworth, Fourth District Court of Appeal, made a compelling case at the grand opening of new Criminal Justice Training Center (CJTC) at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA.

I transcribed a summary excerpt for y'all's reference:
"I was born in 1947. I was a boy in the 50’s. John Murphy, my nextdoor neighbor and godfather, was an LAPD sergeant. His equipment consisted of a .38 special revolver, a billy club, a flashlight, and a pair of handcuffs. The people who are trained nowadays will be equipped with a 9mm semi-auto 14-round sidearm, they will carry multiple magazines, double handcuffs, a tear gas canister, a baton, a hand-held radio, a taser, a flashlight, a voice-activated audio recorder, a body-worn camera, a tactical knife, and a hidden backup pistol. In their trunk will b a shotgun, a patrol rifle and a patrol bag filled with report forms, first aid kits, and a dozen other items John Murphy could never even imagine. They will be expected to know how and when to use all of those things. Sergeant Murphy had learned to drive and to shoot; he had never learned about artificial respiration, he knew nothing about CPR or the use of a defibrillator, he never saw an upper-body protection vest. He never used a computer to check a record or registration. Those tools and the expertise necessary to use them we science fiction to him. His knowledge of search and seizure law saw rudimentary. At that time, so little evidence was being excluded on the basis of Fourth Amendment violations. He did not know the “Miranda” warnings because Miranda had not been decided until 1966, the year he retired. The men and women who go through their training today will be able to understand and debate the finer points of police law and hold their own with any lawyer. They have to be able to do that to do the job correctly.
“Law enforcement changes hourly. It is no easier to keep up with the changes in law enforcement than it is to keep up with changes in medicine or physics or biology or ballistics or pharmacology. Do you think that’s an exaggeration? Those of you not in uniform, ask yourself about the changes in the last eight years. How much did you know about methamphetamine in 2010? How much did you know about AR-15s five years ago? How much did you know about sniper scopes and bullet trajectories before the Mandalay Bay massacre? How much did you know about opioids two years ago? How much did you know about bump stocks and high-capacity magazines a year ago? Every day, every time a cop watches the news, he or she will learn something they will have to know, probably before their next shift.
“The amount of education and reeducation our police must assimilate every day is staggering. It requires literally more daily reeducation than a doctor or lawyer ever needs to do his or her job, and when a peace officer applies that reeducation, he or she has to be a psychologist, a pharmacologist, a teacher, a counselor, a lawyer, an EMT and a hardcore superhero, probably all during one shift. Law enforcement is an incredibly difficult profession. Imagine doing your own job, whatever it may be, while people are throwing rocks at you, spitting on you, trying to kill you. Now think about what the job description is for these people in uniform: putting their life on the line every day for strangers: dealing with the mentally ill, mediating domestic violence, counselling child molestation victims, consoling the bereaved, pulling people out of harm’s way, chasing psychopathic 15-year-olds down blind, dark alleys knowing they have a gang gun but they don’t yet have a conscience. WHat kind of person takes a job like that? I’ve never understood it. It’s not a job though. It’s a calling. I no longer try to understand them, I only thank the Lord for continuing to turn them out."

I am a retired Police Officer from Toronto Canada which is the 4th largest Police Service in North America. I spent 37 years serving the public in Toronto. I worked 14 1/2 years in Regent Park, which was the largest public housing project in Canada and I learned my trade well because of where I worked. I worked there as a "Grunt" and as a Detective running the Major Crime Unit in regent Park. I have been to the wall on so many occasions, from murdered victims, murdered children, dead babies, serial rapists to fatal shootings of armed suspects. I spent another 13 years in Police Intelligence working Organized Crime and my last 8 years in Uniform, only because I knew that was where real Policing is done. I went for four years and stayed for 8 years, because that is where you hone your survival skills as a Cop! In Toronto, we are about to bury a 31 year Veteran of our Poilice Service who was run over by an individual who was breaking into car in an underground parking lot, which caused his death. The last time we had an Officer murdered, the suspect was found not guilty by reason of insanity and he was out walking the streets in just over a year. We in Canada do not have the NRA and we are glad that the right to bear arms is not part of our lifestyle. That being said, gun violence in Toronto is a "Daily" occurrence that has increasingly grown and our Courts have not adjudicated these criminals accordingly. In the USA, I just wanted to say, you are not alone and I support you 100 percent in your struggle. I have been there repeatedly with you and I know the "Feeling" you have. Our job as protectors of our communities is not just a calling, it is "a way of life". l also wanted to applaud His Honor Justice William Bedsworth for his 10 minutes of speaking it the way it is

I'm willing to bet none of those leaving negative comments had or ever will serve anyone other than themselves. They will never pick up a phone, a hose, a stethoscope, a gun, they will never go through gruelling training, continued training, put on a uniform, do a job at ungodly hours and be expected to pour their heart and soul into their job. They will never endure unending criticism, be expected to try to live up to the expectations of millions and to always get it right when there is no right answer. To be spit at, attacked, verbally abused day in, day out and never receiving so much as a simple thank you from those that they help. To live with the horror of things that they have seen for the rest of their life silently.
Yes there are bad eggs, some have lost their way and no first responder is without sin but every dispatcher, firefighter, medic, and police officer put on the uniform every single shift hoping for 2 things. To help somebody and make it home in one piece to their families.
Go run into danger looking for someone to help when everyone else is running away. If you feel like you can do a better job, sign up for it.

I became a NYC Police Officer in 1968 and believe me I can relate to the Judge in many ways although he spoke of Orange County California. As a Cop in NYC in 1968 we were lucky to get any training, we learned survival on the street. A six shot revolver, one set of cuff's, No portable Radio, No RMP, No body armor, and a foot post in Harlem with bricks, bullets and sanitation garbage cans reigning down from the rooftops. Some of us made it and some didn't...many were murdered, gunned down on the streets, shot in the back. And I fear what I would have become if she didn't decide to come and treat me like a human, because everyone else up to that point blamed me for being a punching bag for a group of shellfish arrogant children and said that it was my fault for "provoking them to attack me." We do have a right to protect ourselves and I know people do it regularly, but what about the people who can't, that's why we have cops, because not everyone is going to go charging head first into the firing line.

@@policeswatteam881 I agree in certain instances. But I've also been a city cop for 20 plus years and has seen some of my fellow officers engage in some very unchristianlike behavior. By far those officers are just a small fraction of the commendable officers I work with daily.

J Dtown I’m aware of that and know but still doesn’t stop them from being considered heroes because I’m sure theirs a day in the years they worked where they see things they wish they could unsee. Cops do a lot and know that one day working could be their last.

J Dtown Have you read, “Behind the badge”? I mean, it’s a great book with devotions for law enforcement and the beliefs in God will help cops channel certain emotions with God as their cursor. It’s a great book and everyday for the 365 days (all year), I read a page and pray using the message towards God at the bottom. The book helps with me seeking motivation towards this field of work that I am eager to grasp the knowledge towards and use that to help me get physically fit without sports but just with my own motivation.

You know by reading different comments All Over RUclips I have gathered the one thing. There's always going to be haters on every profession that is important in life. There are people that hate doctors and will even come with negative on doctors but yet doctors save lives, people speak negative things about attorneys but yet attorneys are there most of the time to be on your side either to defend you in a civil case or in the criminal case, some people even talk shit about firefighters and Fire Rescue but yet the firefighters will put out the fire and the fire rescue responders are there to make sure you don't die in an accident or during a fire. I could go on with a list of important careers the people always have to hate on because I think that these haters are people with no knowledge, no education I'm basically very mean you will jobs and it's very sad but even those haters who have decent jobs have the mentality of somebody with no job or a menial job. it's not that people hate police officers it's that people hate that that job Housing Authority behind it and it's also a job that is not easy to get into yes police officers make mistakes like a doctor does like an attorney does everyone makes mistakes no one is perfect. to 90% of the commenters on RUclips stop hating on people's careers and get something going with your life instead of being a loser who hates on everything and on everybody

In one of the case I was required to restrain a possessed individual. I first said, do we get a priest sir, my corporal stated you're the minister they need for now. I said to myself merciful father forgive me of my Sins and assist me today. The moment I came in front of him. The thing inside him spoke through him and said you job is blessed as you are called peacemaker. I remember this line in the bible for it said blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God. Then it said I have been residing in peace here. The word that left my mouth was THE LORD REBUKES YOU. After few exchanges he told several names but finally gave his real name. I called the name again and said THE LORD REBUKES YOU.Then he said I will go but tell the one who sent me that I did not want to do this

Yes your Honor, be a police it's the hardest professional service in the world, but it's the most satisfactory too. In Mexico since 1857 we have the Miranda rights in our constitución and people won all time cases for that procedimental violation, 1917 constitutional reform too, and in any case the statement of any person without the presence of the public defender and the prosecutor never can be consider a confesion. And more, if it is not supported with objective data that make it credibly is discarded and must be ratified in front of the judge. So it's not the only country in the globe that have a fair procedure. You ask : why some body want to be Police officer? Let me answer with an example. If you go to a barbecue party in your neighbor house and he invite policeman, military, lawyers and Engenieers too; around the grill trying to organize, help, suggest, serve and be the last to eat, always you gone to see those woman and men. It's in the genetics I think. Great speach, very sincere, and somebody with your talents and prestige must said it, and rise the voice to defend the most important career and the most incomprended profession. Thank you your Honor.

My 30 year career started in 1968 and my duty gear was a six shot .38, 12 extra rounds on the duty belt, cuffs & a baton. No portable radios for the first several years so once out of the cruiser you were on your own. The academy taught us to always have pocket change so we could use a pay phone (cost a dime) in the event of an emergency. Today’s cops carry so much gear I don’t know how the run after fleeing suspects.

When you take up this calling never forget who you work for. You work in the government for the people and the Constitution you have sworn to uphold. Yes, the demands are extreme for leos and the majority sympathize with your daily plight, but it is eroded by those who not only spit on the Constitution, but by their superiors who protect them. Honor your oath!

My father was one of those officers who carried a .38 Colt pistol, a pair of handcuffs and a baton. When he died in 2005 I still carried his handcuffs, which he was so proud were still doing his job, in addition to 3 other pair. I retired his handcuffs when he died, they are in a shadow box with his pistol and his folded flag.
People ask why I carry four pair of handcuffs;. that's easy, because I've needed more than that. I have two more pair in the car. When I get ready for work I gain 50 pounds in equipment, between my load bearing vest and belt. I have another 100 pounds of gear in my car, I thank God I have an issued car and don't have to take it all out every day. I've seen a lot of changes since my wide eyed first day in 1985, and I still learn every day as the Judge said. We are demonized, vilified, hated and called every name you can imagine, and that's just by the politicians who claim to support us. They claim nobody needs a firearm, but use us as their personal bodyguards while publicly telling people how uneducated and stupid we are. I have the same college degree they do, yet I'm an ignorant neanderthal while they're oh so much smarter. Why anybody wants to be an officer anymore is beyond me.
