  • There are some stories that truly speak to the heart and retired Ohio State Trooper Bob Welsh’s touching poem, “My Christmas Eve”, is certainly one of them. With his permission, we had the honor of recreating his poem (original can be found here- chp.click/bobw....
Mr. Welsh’s poem represents our mission to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to those we serve. This is something which is truly shared by every member of public service, no matter the patch, badge, uniform, or job description. The opportunity to serve the people of California is the greatest of gifts and this poem is a great reminder to us all that even the smallest gesture or action can have a positive impact on those around us.
The underlying message of this poem brings to light how impaired driving can impact not only your life, but the lives of those who love you. We urge you to never drive impaired. Please have a plan in place to get home safely before you celebrate this holiday season.
While this video was produced internally, entirely by CHP employees, we could not have done it without the help of many people and wish to extend our gratitude to: Bob Welsh, CHP - Truckee, Michael A. Del Puppo, the CHP Museum, Loch Leven Lodge, Jax At The Tracks, Milne Towing Services, Cal-Nevada Towing, Michael Bittner, Mr. and Mrs. Calcutt, Mr. and Mrs. Wayland, and Mr. and Mrs. Ball.
More of Bob Welsh's poems can be found at www.BobWelsh.com

    5 minutes
They used 5 minutes to show us what police work is all about, they used 5 minutes to teach us how to be a good cop , they used 5 minutes to teach us kindness
And it works , I am impressed and trying very hard not to cry right now

I shared this poem via email with a Nevada State Trooper friend of mine many years ago. I expected him to say he had already seen it. Instead, he replied how touched he was by it and had forwarded it to many others in the agency. He said it got a great response from other troopers. It's good to see the poem was turned into this wonderful video. A big Thank You to troopers and those who protect us everywhere.

At times loaning people money you yourself didn't have, breaking policy to carry a down and out person in the patrol car. Once I paid for a wrecker that the sick woman was unable to pay. This was not a job, it was a passion, I saw some who didn't have it and moved on only after a short time on the job. God Bless all the officers in all the police departments.

This brought a flood of years to my eyes. It forced me to recall as a young patrol officer responding to an accident call approximately thirty minutes before midnight on a snowy New Years Eve . I won't go into details, but suffice to say I will never forget the loss of an infant girl beneath a spare tire in an overturned station wagon. I am sure I speak for every patrol office, fireman, and EMT who ever responded to a call or worse yet, to a family home to break the news! I will never ever forget any of them over a 37 year career. What a beautiful and moving video. As the wife of a policeman, there were many holidays we had to celebrate without Daddy. But he always explained to our boys that it was a privilege and special service to be out there helping others, when they needed it. I know, like myself, our boys were always proud of the sacrifice he gave. He is retired now, but still finds joy in serving others, at church or as a volunteer with the State Wildlife Service. I guess it’s just his nature to give to others. I’m so lucky to have him in my life.

This was absolutely beautiful!! I have always been proud of the CHP. Always. I remember New Year's Eve, 1996. We didn't get a visit, we got a phone call from The Chief Of Police of Tom Bean, TX. 9 members of my family were killed by a drunk driver in an ice storm between Tom Bean and Whitewright, TX. He was so kind and calm and my heart just broke for him, he suffered our loss along with us. When we flew out to Texas, we landed at DFW, rented a van ( all adult children - 5 of us) and drove straight to Tom Bean where the bodies were at the coroners. He was the first one to greet us at the station door and he embraced all of us and that's when we lost it. This man who didn't know us, had never heard of us til the the day before, helped us at the most horrible time of our lives and I will never forget him and his compassion. And now I have to dry my computer off because I have cried all over my keyboard. Merry Christmas to the men & women of the CHP! Be safe!

I remember working swing shift beat 102, 12 now. I get a call of a stalled vehicle blocking, arrived on scene and it’s an elevated freeway with a curve to the left with no shoulder just north of the airport. I got on the PA, the driver followed directions and was able to push the car off the freeway to a gas station. The family lived about 15 minutes away. Told the station attendant they will take care of the car the next day. Gave the family a ride back to their house with all the presents they had to whatever gathering they were going to. I remember the young girl, maybe 10 years old said, “oh, what a clean car, the seats are fuzzy.” I got them back home and the father thanked me. Another save with just a 1125V line 1148X. Best thing was no accident, no paperwork on Christmas Eve.

I was giving a motorcyclist cpr one night.
I was at absolutel muscle fatigue by the time fire got there.
As I laid in the grass for a few moments, his mother came up to me "are you the one who tried to save my sons life?".
I stood, crushed by her words. She embraced me, in tears and said "Thank you".
      I'll never forget that night.

I don’t live in CA but this is powerful. Really shows what police work is really about. Not arresting, shooting, and tazing. Not killing, causing panic, or ruining lives. Not cutting families in half, hurting innocent people, and making life more difficult for others. Police work is about helping others, it’s about protecting the public, it’s about being caring. To be an officer truly is to serve and to protect. God bless all of you at the CHP.

I spent 30 years as a Police Officer in Connecticut. Although I never delivered bad news on Christmas Night there were others just the same and it was not a pretty sight. I know this pain when misery will strikes so deep in vein. Many will criticize and mock what Police Officers do, but take some time and walk a mile in their shoes. A deep Thanks to Bob Welsh and this beautiful poem he wrote. I have sent this link to many Police Officers and friends so "My Christmas Eve" will live on for many years to come. God Bless and Happy Holidays to all. Peace Mike Clancy Groton Town Police "Retired"

I am the son of the former CHP Officer in Charge of the Truckee substation where the CHP version of this beautiful poem was filmed. We moved to Donner Lake before the freeway was built for the Olympics. Many a Christmas eve or Christmas Day, my father was gone for a wreck on old Donner Summit or some other incident that needed attention. We always knew that our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrations would evolve around the emergency calls that came into our phone number (initially our crank phone number was "Truckee 2." The local doctor was Truckee 1.) Thank God for all of the wonderful men and women in blue who protect us and show acts of amazing kindness, while being called names and threatened. May God bless all of you during this holiday season. Thank you so much for this poem and video.

CHP was my 2nd home. I miss this Dept. The high standards. the family connection and most of all the dedication it has to the public. Having retired as a dispatcher to becoming an expert examiner (which I miss), you understand all aspects of the dept. From being the one who answers that suicide caller, car accident or Officer needs help. Two brothers, ( one killed in the line of duty) nephew, ex-husband, ex-son-in-law, and many friends. We all worked the holidays, rarely had it off. Our family never had it off at the same time. We accepted it with pride. We would get the report of Santa on his route. Potluck and cookies. Other Depts wishing each other a Merry Christmas. Job well done on this video. Kleenex in one hand, the other shaking hand holding my coffee cup! Brings back so many memories. Being a first responder is a noble profession. Not for attention or accolades but for something bigger than oneself. Yes, kindness will touch a life in ways that you may never know. Your outcome may not be like this video......do it anyway and do it often.....

Once long ago, I was driving to Vermont from NY...I left too late and a blizzard set in...very hard to see...unfamiliar with the roads..and I pulled over..not being able to see even the lane edges or worse even the ditches...put my blinkers on and my friend said to me...what are you doing? I said someone will come to help...she said..who? no one knows we are here, you can't just wait here...I just told her, someone would come..I don't know what I was feeling...maybe in 15 min. or so a NY State trooper pulled up and walked over and asked what was going on...I told him how fearful I was to continue...he asked where we were going, I said Vermont....his voice got louder and he said VERMONT?! you are still so far...I asked him if I could just follow his tail lights to the closest lodging...I followed him for about 5 miles maybe and he made a right into the lodging's driveway. I thanked him and will never forget his kindness. I just knew "someone would come".

When I was around 5 or 6 years old I had a local PD officer approach my mom in a Walgreens and ask her if he could buy me a Hot Wheels car. She said yes, and he told me to pick out whichever one I wanted. Maybe he witnessed something horrible that day and wanted to end the day on a positive note, or maybe I reminded him of a child that was no longer with us. I'll never know the reasoning behind his kind gesture, but he made my day back then and I will never forget it.

Absolutely beautiful video. My father is a retired trooper (NJSP) and I remember all the Christmas nights when he wasnt home. He always told me it's not about the badge, the gun, or the car, it's about changing someone's life, even if it's the smallest thing. This is what being a cop is all about. The chance to give back anything you can. To all my fellow firefighters, dispatchers, troopers, medics, merry Christmas and happy new year.
