You missed the biggest bit. Davince Resolve has evolved into a full on video editor/nuke style compositor/audio editor and colour corrector... FOR FREEEEEEE *cough*
Thanks for the history lesson. Just bought the P4K and will pick up in Singapore soon as one of the two founders of Black Magic, Peter Barber, picked one up for me and another mate who’s working with me on a new project in Bali - we plan to keep them both busy very soon. Interesting Pete didn’t get a nod in your early history segment of the video. I remember being in VHQ with him and Grant as they were explaining their idea for an analog to digital converter that would allow graphics artists to see what they were working on directly from a reference monitor rather than just their computer screens which was a game changer for them. Amazing where this all started and how far it’s come!
The nostalgia is real! Hope to see you more often. Love how this channel evolved with the new cast, old cast, and now the only thing missing are the puppets.
this was dope. just copped the P4K a week ago too. loved seeing this history joint. please post more. maybe even do some now-defunct companies as well. stellar my dude.
Erik!!!!!!! Love seeing you guys back in action!!!!!! And yes, I truly believe we would have never gotten Raw into low budget indie maker’s hands in such a short time frame.
I didn't know that davinci resolve came from a post-production house. I thought it was just a powerful editor and coloring too. From over $100,000 to under $300. wow what a price drop. and you get more features too. wow! what times we live in. now indy filmmakers can get access to pro tools. :-) so cool
He's back!!! the setup and ownership of this channel just continues to confuse the hell out of me. You all make a good team now! Keep it up and get this channel showing again!
Indy is a joint effort of five people working together. Erik and Ted are in LA while Griffin shoots in NYC. Then we have two editors that help us cut together the show and podcast that you're seeing here. Thank you for the kind words! We're just trying to have fun with it.
@@indymogul glad Erik is on board. For a while I was worried with this reincarnation he had completely moved on. Loving the stuff so far guys. Glad your making a go of it again.
7:53 The Micro Cinema Camera does NOT have a global shutter. They announced a version but never released one. The 4K Cinema Camera was the only one to my knowledge. Really sad they aren't rolling with the global shutter on the newest models. REALLY wish they'd make a FF or at least 1.6x crop so you aren't basically required to get a speedbooster
Very nice Erik! That was very entertaining and informative at the same time. Here are couple things I can think off the top of my head (could be interesting to explore) 1) Canon Deep Dive 2) Nikon Deep Dive 3) Panasonic Deep Dive 4) Olympus Deep Dive 5) Micro 4/3 Alliance Deep Dive 6) Sony Deep Dive (Sensor domination or how Sony rose from no name to top 3) 7) Sigma Deep Dive (From less known 3rd party lens to one of the first few lenses people recommend first) 8) USB Deep Dive (Yes, including the now USB-C variation/mess) Any of these topics could be very interesting to do a deep dive on, cheers!
I think I'm in love! Thanks Blackmagic, what do I do with my wife now? She can't record in 4k at a great price with beautiful cinema look and slomo. Or does she? Nice watching you Erik!
I really miss my Blackmagic Pocket OG, but, I don't miss the problems I had with it. I went through literally 4 of them and had problems with HDMI port and the record button failed on one of them. Also, had one that constantly skipped frames. I do love Blackmagic, though, and maybe someday I'll have one again. But, I've between pretty happy with my Panasonics for now though.
Dope breakdown. I have been using Davinci Resolve for a couple of years and have no plans on changing. I long debate an acquisition of a Pocket 4k. Time will tell...
Adam Stevermer If you want really cheap, you can find the original Pocket Cinema cameras for under 500 bucks with plenty of batteries and a lens if you’re lucky. I guess you can either really kit out an original BMPCC or get the 4K if you already have the rest.
To assume the young people don't know what a capture card is when Let's Plays are a big thing. and you need a good one to even consider making an LP. XD
I'm just excited for the future. I got to use the Original 4K Camera of theirs and back in the day, being used to Canon 5D mk.2 at best, I was blown away for the price. Since then, I'm way more excited the 4K Pocket and Ursa Mini G2. Both are in my opinion, the camera's to beat for their price points and I am very hyped to see what they bring out next.
More gear talk in this style, it's super engaging and great for beginners which I find hard with other gear vids. There's enough film history/essays on youtube.
I just recently picked up the normal Pocket Cinema Camera, and I absolutely love it. As long as you have a bunch of batteries, external mic and maybe some sort of stabilization if you really want, it’s an absolute bargain. I bought mine for 450 bucks with 9 batteries, a case, and a lens. Had some scuff marks but works fine!
Little trick I learned from Film Riot: shoot green screen footage with a high shutter speed to avoid all those motion blur keying artifacts. After getting a clean key, add it back in with Pixel Motion blur or RSMB.
I’m such a BM fan boy. I just picked up my first “pro” cam BMPCC4K. I dreamt and drooled over the Original URSA! I’m still considering buying one used.
I say, as a community, we need to all agree that we shall from this point forward refer to the BMPCC4K as the "Blimp". Because it sounds like a shortened version of "Black Magic Pocket"
I shot a short film with the first Ursa, shooting 80 fps RAW and had a lot of problems with the camera (drop frames - even burnt a Cfast Card) never wanted to know about black magic cameras (even tho I love DaVinci) but now this video makes me think again and might consider giving them another chance thanks to all they have done for the industry. btw can find my 4 minutes short film by searching "experimental short film baby" and if you pay close attention you might even see the drop frames.
I feel like this is an alternate history of Blackmagic. Before they bought DaVinci they were known as the company that made cheap signal processing/converter boxes like the Mini Converter series and the Videohub.
I got to know the Blackmagic company simply because one year ago I needed to learn to edit some drone footage and the Davinci Resolve video editor is offering a free version! I couldn't believe that powerful software was free while the Adobe stuff are crazy expensive.
Between Resolve, the original cinema camera, the Pocket and now the Pocket 4k, has any company done more for indie filmmakers? All of those were as important a milestone as the Canon 5DmkII or the Panasonic GH4.
Something else to cover in some depth? How about getting off of Windows *_AND_* Apple OS? That's right, can I move completely to some version of Linux? DaVinci Resolve runs on Linux, right? That covers editing, compositing and color grading. (Is Fairlight good enough to do all the audio work?) What other tools and drivers would I need? What about 3D modeling and texturing? GIMP for image work. InkScape for vector art. What am I missing? Go for it big guy.
I can't wait for BlackMagicDesign to purchase the rights to JNCO Jeans! then the door will be open to release some even bigger and badder Pocket Cinema cameras!
Thank you black magic for pushing other companies and yo was truly to the absolute best of doobie the consumer and the Creator and everybody combined I'm going to buy a pocket 4k camera next time I'm going to look for a cinema
Final line was amazing - "is your GH5 or C100 a little better because of BM? "
Hahaha! Best indie filmmaking gear history lesson I've seen in a long time! Good to see you back, Erik!
I can't believe they missed the chance to call it the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.

It’s so true! Without BMD, I would argue the filmmaking space would be ALOT different!

Very cool Blackmagic Design history lesson. Oh, and I'm loving my BMPCC4K.
I love the quick, loose, comedic vibe to the video. Like "up to speed" but for cameras, it's great!
Nice to see Mr Beck back in the hot seat, too.
