Creating with my hands and my imagination is the ultimate rush for me. Love seeing this. Would love to see the sewing room come together. Carry on, I will be watching both of you makers! Congratulations…your dress turned out beautifully…I remember my first pattern days in High School…the sleeves were a challenge. My mom was very good at patterns and she helped me, but one time Tom Jones was on TV..ha..in the 60’s and she refused to come to my aide..thus I learned as you did..trial and error.
    Great feeling ..love your videos…

Thanks for the update on the maker side of your channel. I too had a treadle sewing machine 45 years ago. It was a beautiful piece of furniture and more functional in many ways than a portable machine because it doubles as a table and a work surface when sewing to have to top open out. Mine was a Singer and had the bullet bobbin. I used it to do lots of hippie jeans patches for all in the commune as well as sewing simple garments for my children☺️. Interestingly many attachments were invented for these machines and could possibly be available on a sight like Etsy. Thanks for sharing your process and I think the finished project looked very sharp and tailored. It is also sometimes a challenge to make linen garments if the linen is drapery material. The weave can be a little open and unravel for fine garment edges. Looking forward to seeing more from your channel. You all have endeavored to create your new lives and channel offering during a very unusual time. Very brave. Take care , persevere .. and I look forward to more in the near future. Great job from a Canadian 🇨🇦 and sewer since 4-H classes at 12-16 ages. It looked great on. The linen fabric was a choice that made that tricky shoulder really difficult. I can see you in a lovely summer light weight fabric & colour and I bet that shoulder will work so much easier for you! Especially if you can iron & steam it a ton. Brava! Yes to your mockup and what I call flat lining the whole bodice to support and hold the shape. Yes to loving not only the color but the linen enough to use a towel to press. Linen like wool really can hold shape if you "build"'it in as you go. So use of an ironing "ham" with towel over it and linen helps round in the bodies shape. When flat lining, with lining/interfacing fold up both pieces of fabric up toward yourself like they will be on the inside of the garment then pin. This makes the inner piece/lining slightly smaller than the outer and keeps lining from wrinkling underneath as well as builds the shape into the seams. More more!

Beautiful! I love the color & it's the perfect cocktail dress!
My Mom took tailoring classes where she was taught not to use the facings, but rather use the pattern pieces for the bodice to make them (she had me line the entire bodice for something waisted) and they lay better plus don't sneak out. (They stay in place.) She also taught me how to do it for sleepless tops/dress.
Also, always put the sleeve in before you do the side seam of the dress & bottom seam of sleeve. Then make one long seam down the inside of the sleeve & down the side seam. Everything lays better!

I have to say, the stitching of the old Singer machines is really beautiful, I always loved it. Personally, I loved your jeans belt with your dress! I remember reading somewhere about French women seeming to have an effortless sense of style. The writer recounted seeing her French friend grasp the vibrant, sheer silk covering for a small entrance table on her way out the door one evening, turning it into a stunning sash belt for her little black dress. It seems you, too, have the flare! So happy you both are pursuing your passions. Thanks for sharing them with us.
My mother made most of our clothes (including new winter coats for myself and a sister just older than me on our way to college), many of them on a Singer treadle sewing machine much like yours. She, too, was self-taught, making her own coat as a first garment! She and her six brothers and sisters had been raised during the Great Depression. After her mother, out of necessity, got her a coat from a donation center, she was humiliated at school, being confronted by a girl whose mother had donated it. So she found a faded old red wool adult’s coat, removed the lining and revealed the brightly colored inner side of the cloth. She cut out a smaller version of the pieces and hand stitched them together to form a new red jacket for herself- at 10 years old! “Where there’s a will, there’s a way!”Mom passed away a few years ago at 98 years old, and I regularly think of the daily miracles she performed, on a shoestring, for us, her lucky family!

Love your sewing. I've been an upholsterer for 30 yrs, tight turns are very difficult, and it's none of those things that, come out really well, or not. Haven't managed to work out why, probably a combination of the fabric, how you feel on the day, and which way the wind is blowing. If you work it out, let me know. In the meantime, never give up.

My worst sewing project - the lining! Ugh! You did a beautiful job! Love the dress and fabric! I once sewed a dress that had 20 button holes and I hand stitched every one! That was a fun experience as my mother sat and showed how this went for those that didn’t have machines to do it for them. It felt rather historical to learn that skill.

Sarah, I noticed and loved your dress and new haircut on Chateau Diaries. I am a sewer this is very interesting, my mother-in-law used a treadle sewing machine preferred it to electric. She gifted it to me a couple of years ago, it’s in my sewing room looking very pretty, but unused. 🇨🇦❤️

I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to sew with the treadle! Give it a try!

Hi Sarah I'm glad I'm not the only one that has the problem of allowing more than you dotted line. I think you did great as those seems nr armpit/top were supper awkward. Love the style and fabric choice

What a fantastic job for cutting down the pattern and sewing on an old Singer. I’ve made many of my clothes especially dresses and I identified with you on many points is horror🤣 I usually end up figuring my own way to make it look right. Great job!
