In order to talk about the Tarnished, we need to understand the history behind The Lands Between, and what has brought us to this point.
The Lands between are watched over by The Greater Will, who is a being of great power, responsible for the creation of the Elden Ring, and the Golden order of the Erdtree.
The Elden Ring was housed within the Erdtree, which would in turn would bless the land and its inhabitants with the grace of the Elden Ring, bringing an incredible level of order to the land...

I have spent 170+ hours on this game. Love every minute of it but had no clue why I was even doing what I was doing. I've watched numerous videos including those of Vaati Vidya and still couldn't make heads nor tails out of the story and my purpose. You sir have explained in extremely understandable detail with complete clarity what happened and why I'm trying to become Elden Lord. Thank you so much for your easy to understand explanation. It has given me new insight and has opened up the game lore wise to me.
it's a good summery, however i think it misses the "reason" for why the erdtree is using the tarnished. I believe, from what i've learned from the lore, this "land between" was invaded by an outer god, a nameless god of "order", this brought the Erdtree and Elden Ring into the lands, replacing the former cycle of life and death (the prior god of these lands was the god of death, the deathbirds serve), with a cycle of reincarnation of a sort, where the souls of the dead would pass through the erdtree and be reborn. It's unknown what the outergod gets from this, though I suspect he/it/she got it from this cycle of reincarnation, because it was the cycle of reincarnation that Merica broke when she revolted against the power of the Erd Tree, outer god and elden ring, by sealing the rune of destined death, and robbing the lands of reincarnation and death itself (which is why everything in these lands appear to be living in a state of undeath, they quite literally can't die with death solen away in merica's revolt).
Since this outer god was a god of "order" it is highly likely those who lost it's grace and became the exiled tarnished were those who escaped the chains of his predestination "ordered" fate. I believe this because of the symbolism of the stars and Ranni's questline. Ranni actually ripped her own soul of her own body in order to escape the chains of fate of the erd tree. The tarnished themselves were likely denied this cycle of life/reincarnation by the erdtree, their souls probably denied access to reincarnation, and held or banished by the erdtree to somewhere else. so you are likely returned to these lands (the tarnished) after the erdtree brought your soul and body back... it couldn't reincarnate you as merica sealed that, but it could rejoin you to your old body and bring you back into the lands.
The erdtree is bringing back the tarnished because they are free from "grace" or "graceless" in the sense that they are not chained by fate. Someone without the chains of predestination is the only type of person the erdtree can use to fix what Merica broke. the reality is all those touched by grace are not meant by fate to fix the damage and reestablish the control the outer god desires. so the erd tree is bringing back the tarnished to flip over the table so to speak. it needs a new elden lord to repair the world, and it is taking the risk that one of the tarnished will chose to become the elden lord and restore the erd tree's order.
In order to control the graceless, tarnished, the erdtree created the fingermaidens to guide the tarnished on thier path, in hopes this form of control can guarentee or maximize the chances one of the tarnished will fix what is broken.
Of course those who wish to become elden lord know what the erdtree is doing, and so there are two groups attacking the tarnished as they arrive. one is the lord of blood's faction, with white mask, who is killing the fingermaidens, and if needed killing the tarnished if they do not seem like the type to help Mogh become the next elden lord. the other group is Margit who believes it is his job to prevent any tarnished from living let alone becoming elden lord.

I'm no stranger to Fromsoft's way of storytelling but I picked up the game last week but wanted to understand a little of the lore first for character building reasons.

The title "The Lands Between" can be understood as land between some physical locations like the seas surrounding it, or more of a metaphysical place like something between life and afterlife. I think the influence of Greater Will caused it to become the latter. In the opening cinematic every Tarnished you see seem to be dead maybe save Fia. So the Tarnished are people who were banished from the Lands Between or denied access, but they are summoned there as undead of sorts. I think it's also implied that the Lands Between exist beyond time, as we learn in the game that Hourah Loux should be older than any mortal ought to be, so the Tarnished might be summoned from different times as well.
Love these vids I have been watching your Div 1 and 2 vids for a few years now but I think you could really help a lot of people out when it comes to the lore of this game because a lot of people don’t understand it

Bring this series back, I just got 30+ hours into Elden Ring!
Just a quick note. When Godfrey was exiled from the lands between he was exiled with all his kinfolk and he led the long march to take his kin to a safe place. His kin are the ones that became Tarnished. This even marks the moment when all of our ancestors were banished from the Lands Between.
Basically, us tarnished are the ones who can become Elden Lord because we are the same kin as Godfrey. A curse set upon us by Queen Marika ages before the shattering.

For anyone wondering why marikas oldest was able to be killed, was because a piece of the tune of death, would be stolen by ranni, allowing the killing of goldywn (marikas oldest)

@@DemezaBC ranni is both the villain and the hero, as she is the main catalyst that served to cause the shattering, but in the end she leaves the lands in between better than it was when you arrived, that is, if you pick her ending.
But yeah, she did have godwyn assassinated.
So, us being a tarnished can't die i get that, but how can we kill other tarnished and they don't just come back, can someone explain?
I think we are graced with just enough power to take others, which is why we can collect pieces of the Elden Ring later on in the story.

So based on the opening scene it makes it sound as tho the tarnished were banished because instead of falling into order of the greater will they were being who could have the ability to be what they want upto and including over throwing the elden ring and changing the fate of the lands between

I don’t understand. How can Tarnished even see the grace points?
Aren’t the grace points you see in the world from the Erd Tree? And the Erd Tree is what rejects the Tarnished to begin with?
This is super late but when you talk to other tarnished they’re surprised you still see it, because like he said in the video it fades soon after arriving the lands between. It’s speculation but i think the player is chosen (by the Erd Tree) out of the many Tarnished who have been called back.
