    Cathay Pacific Emergency Landing: • Cathay Pacific Emergen...
    What Caused Flight CX884 To Make An Emergency Landing
    We were around half way into the flight when the captain announced we would have to make an emergency landing, it was at this point the crew began to give instructions on what we had to do. This included how to perform the brace position correctly and invited us removing the life jacket from under out seats and strapping it around us.
    At one point a crew member comes over the PA and announces that we might have to make an emergency water ditch, meaning we could be forced to attempt a landing on the Pacific Ocean. Luckily this didn't happen and the pilot was abel to divert the plane to a Eareckson Air Station which is a remote military airbase located on Shemya, in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands.
    At points during the emergency landing passengers can smell smoke throughout the plane making them think there could be a fire onboard the plane. From a press release later released by Cathay Pacific we found out that a cooling fan had failed in the control room below the cockpit and had caused several smoke detectors to be activated.
    All footage filmed using an iPhone 5s and edited using Final Cut Pro.

    Smoke in the cockpit is the most serious emergency situation for pilots .

      Apart from the wings falling off, I've heard that's also pretty bad.

    • @astleyfam
      @astleyfam 8 лет назад +3

      +Jack Coggins They don't tend to fall off, it can be occasional that something gets caught in an engine, which then rips that sides wing of the plane off when the engine continues to try to run, but they don't fall off.

    Good stuff.. You have to stay calm in any emergency situation. Almost all ditchings are worse than dry belly landings and incur fatalities, if not from the crash, then from the ocean chill - particularly where you were. The best thing that can be done is to stay calm and think rationally and logically. Observe your surroundings to figure out your emergency exits and listen to any announcement the crew need to make, in order to maximise your chances of survival.

    Compensation of $300, what a joke.

    • @MrNico1011
      @MrNico1011 8 лет назад +24

      there are guidelines of what airlines have to pay. They got the passengers to L.A. with a huge delay. And of course airlines want to reduce the amount of money they have to actually spend. Cuz if you give 300 passengers 300$ they have to spend $90.000 however if they would give everyone $1000 they would have to spend $300.000. Additionally cathay did everything they could to get the passengers to L.A. as soon as possible

    • @MrNico1011
      @MrNico1011 8 лет назад +1

      ***** Of course he would´ve got more if he would´ve been injured. But if you land in the water there is a high chance the aircraft just blows apart and you die. It´s pretty obvious that you get more money if you get injured than if you get to your desination delayed

    • @callumpatterson7234
      @callumpatterson7234 7 лет назад

      I_Wear_Socks you do get compensation from airlines if you're not involved in a crash, if you're travelling within the EU, flying from or to an EU country, or flying with an airline which has a base in the EU, you get compensation for delays, emergency landings and everything in between.

      MrNico1011 can I be one of them smartass people who love to jump in and correct you on these comments 😁when planes hit the water they either stay whole ( only sometimes ) or they break apart (usually ) but they never blow apart unless they have bombs, decompression , or similar 😁there I feel better now being a smartass becomes me.

    Having seen 2 of your videos on this (and many more, I, too have seen some "hairy" flights, but also have survived many other inmmediately life threatening situations in my71 years.
    I am a retired electronic technician in the Greater Montreal Canada area, but have had over 1 million Km on the road not counting various fly and drives in 3 languages and 3 countries, yet never had the chance to go overseas.
    I admire your calm in a dangerous situation. I'too am good at when an emergency demands it, and that has saved my life many times and that of others.
    I must admit, often I can't tell the difference between British and Aussie parlance, and as yours seems simply an educated style, much that makes other identifiable does not usually come from the most educated of us.
    Good luck, and when somebody, having seen this finds themselves in a like situation, we might think "quid pro quo" and may they make the best of what they have witnessed.

    Not dying is priceless but getting only $300 compensation for the delay is worthless if it can only be used to fly on the same airline. What about missed connections, travel and hotel fees once they finally got to LA? That can be costly. Was that compensated? This is why I always buy travel/trip insurance.

    • @MasterofBlitz
      @MasterofBlitz 7 лет назад +3

      Cathay Pacific is one of the better airlines in the world. I think they would have paid for a connection flight if he or any passenger may have missed. But still the airline did their job and that was to make sure everyone was safe. That is the pilot's job overall.

    • @kksd2
      @kksd2 7 лет назад

      Some US Airlines were giving up to $1-2KUSD for being bumped from a flight!

    • @yvrelna
      @yvrelna 5 лет назад

      @@kksd2 The law and regulations dictate how much an airline have to compensate under various circumstances. Passengers being bumped is entirely an airlines' fault, as such a thing only happens because of the airline's poor resource planning and the poor business practice of overbooking flights. The airline should be held liable for such mishaps.
      An technical fault and having to do an emergency landings on the other hand isn't entirely the airline's fault, it happens all the times to even the best airlines. The airline would only be culpable for a technical fault if they have statistically significantly higher rate of technical faults than similar airlines due to poor maintenance.
      Also, heavily penalizing Airlines who safely make an emergency landing would likely have the opposite effect on air safety, as pilots would essentially be pressured to push on in dangerous situations instead of calling for an emergency landing when they really should have.
      In a safety-oriented culture, pilots are taught that it is better to overdo emergency landings when they don't really need it, than to not do it when they really should.

    Not sure how Cathay Pacific get away with describing this as a 'precautionary diversion' - if they were entertaining the thought of ditching it was an emergency.

  • @kathleenlock8963
    @kathleenlock8963 5 лет назад +1

    This would be a distressing situation for anyone, but especially for people who had children on the plane, it had to be terrifying. I think people deserved a lot more compensation than they got, just for the overwhelming fear it caused. I'll be there are at least some people on that plane who are done flying after that.

    Your calm demeanor is very impressive! I fly all the time, but the only emergency I've ever had was on a short flight from Philadelphia to Newburgh New York on a DH-8 prop. It was just a short connecting flight, the gear touched the 11,000 foot runway, and we aborted the landing because of lost differential braking on a slightly snowy surface. We circled for a while in whiteout conditions until the decision was made to return to Philadelphia. It takes a lot to make me nervous......but that sure did the trick!

    Thank goodness you were all ok! Flying back to the UK from Grenada in the Caribbean once on a VA flight we made it with no issues to the stopover (quick pick up of other passengers from Tobago). Then we were held on the aircraft for hours in incredible heat . They couldn't put the aircon on as engines were switched off. Lots of people passing out from the heat and having to be offloaded. Ambulances called etc. Then the pilot said we were finally ok to go, that there had been a problem with the plane which they had to sort out or on this transatlantic crossing we were all headed to a watery grave!!! Scared the hell out of me but quickly stopped any complaints on board!

    When I first saw the video my brain tricked me into thinking that you were already landing in LA when they had the incident. The thought of literally being over the middle of the pacific with the thought of ditching would be terrifying. To even contemplate a ditch over the pacific the pilot would have to accept that the situation was so grave that the the high likelihood that that many people would die in a ditch was outweighed by the high likelihood that all people would die with continued flight.

      Hey +QueenNoTeetha151 thanks, it's strange to look back on it. But you'd be surprised how composed everyone can be in situations like this, the crew really helped keep everything calm. I think there was probably a few people who would have preferred not to fly again on this plain but there wasn't much choice, plus we didn't find out how serious the problem was until we landed at an airport in Alaska after this.

    I really know what you were feeling... Well during my emergency landing I dind't put on lifejacket, that's because I was flying to Beijing from Paris and the plane was above Russia. In my case it was serious engine failure. The plane started shaking and sound strange. Thankfully both landings ended happily :)

      +One City At A Time I'm also really glad, the touchdown was the hardest I've ever had, and I thought that tires had exploded. But we stopped at the runway and could calm down. Your situation wasn't also nice. But we both are alive that's the most important! :D

    Please keep the videos going! I am a new flyer and am extremely terrified of planes. Do you fly a lot and does it affect you anymore when you fly?

    • @alexocean9196

      felicia jackson the most dangerous part of flying is the trip to the airport
      Actually you are more likely to die by getting struck by lighting getting into your car to drive to the airport than die in a plane crash
      So relax and enjoy the flight :P
