Cathay Pacific Emergency Landing - CX884 Hong Kong - Los Angeles
The events in this video occurred during my flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles and documents the emergency landing as it happens.
We were around half way into the flight when the captain announced we would have to make an emergency landing, it was at this point the crew began to give instructions on what we had to do. This included how to perform the brace position correctly and invited us removing the life jacket from under out seats and strapping it around us.
At one point a crew member comes over the PA and announces that we might have to make an emergency water ditch, meaning we could be forced to attempt a landing on the Pacific Ocean. Luckily this didn't happen and the pilot was abel to divert the plane to a Eareckson Air Station which is a remote military airbase located on Shemya, in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands.
At points during the emergency landing passengers can smell smoke throughout the plane making them think there could be a fire onboard the plane. From a press release later released by Cathay Pacific we found out that a cooling fan had failed in the control room below the cockpit and had caused several smoke detectors to be activated.

Well that would be much better than being ripped to an unrecognisable mush! You know, your head ripped off along with both arms and legs, you might even be unlucky enough to have your internals ripped out too!! You would most probably be covered in aviation fuel, so whatever is left of you; which probably wouldn't be much, you would also burn! So better to go with your anxiety I would think.

If you don't know what happened. Here is what happened: The cooling system to cool down the servers and computers below the cockpit is very mandatory to prevent them overheating and causing disastrous things to occur. The cooling system failed mid-flight. Which could cause the servers and computers to overheat and cause many cockpit functions to fail. The flight needed to land ASAP before they overheat and fail. It's as high priority to land as the engine exploding mid-flight (which almost never happens). Because you are over the ocean and there are no close airports. The crew were thinking of a water landing. So that's why you put on the life vest. Eventually they found a military base airport to land at and that's why you landed there. Hope this helped to tell you what happened.

It should b designed in someway so it gives the flight sometime to land safely rather than an emergency landing. We the passengers pay so much and end up with unwanted tension of having to cope with water landings and emergency landings. Hope more importance given to make flights safer rather than having bars and beds inside a flight. Even though 1 out of many flight crashes u might b sitting in that 1 flight with no scope for survival.

I'm also someone who, in crisis situations where other people were freaking out, turns calm. I know this from experience. Seriously, not all people freak out in the moment. I become calm and take control during the situation, and the emotions come later, when the situation is entirely finished.

A panic attack is the *sudden* onset of extreme terror accompanied by sweating, heart palpitations, dizziness, shaking & numbess in extremities, nausea and fear of dying.
Some people scream and cry when this happens. Others are paralysed by it.
Screaming, crying, gasping for air and other more visible symptoms are not the defining symptoms of a panic attack. Some people have them, some don't.

I was the supervisor for the ground handling company that morning at LAX when the flight arrived. We received that flight at 4:40am. Cathay Pacific are an excellent airline. One of my favorites to operate, they have an excellent team. Glad you guys were able to make it to LA safely.

This video domenstrates perfect professionalism of Cathy Pacific staff. The cabin crew who did the PA and cabin instructions were so calm, so efficient, and so well trained. Very impressive. This video made me trust Cathay Pacific more.

Not all emergency landings are that serious. An emergency landing can be because a passenger is ill or freaking out or they have not a lot of fuel left and stating a fuel emergency gives them priority to land. Therre is prob more suttle cases but I tired so i cant name them all :D.

I'm surprised there wasn't a LOT more applause after the landing. People sometimes clap for just normal landings, which always annoys me when it happens. In this case, though, it would've been completely justified.

My father experienced two emergency landings and he is still gladly flying. These episodes are rare and for the vast majority of times manageable. Pilots and flight attendants are extremely well prepared, but prevention is key.

The flight above ocean is scary. I had flew from Hong Kong to LA in Cathay and the flight duration is so big and lengthy like it's eternal and there's a lot of wind above ocean as well. I salute you for staying strong.

I can imagine that it must be horrible to be in that situation, but imagine what its like for the pilots, they have to make a safe landing under huge amounts of pressure, whilst doing the flying AND if they crash then they are responsible for the deaths of hundreds. Lots of respect for them.

Especially not near a place like Shemya Island. It's very cold up there. If they had gone into the water, even if they had life vests, they probably would have quickly died anyway from hypothermia.

jo fjo Liferafts arent really that much use to be honest. Its very difficult to land on the ocean without a wing clipping the sea at high speed or the nose digging in. Chance are the plane will cartwheel or break apart and you will be throw around like a rag doll.
if you think landing in open ocean & AT NIGHT is likely to result in a Hudson situation, I'm afraid you're being very very optimistic.
i wonder if a pilot would chose to fly as long as possible with a fire, to reach land?
