    Thanks of the video. Just received 2 rescue puffers (Green Spotted and Figure 8) juveniles. They were kept together in a freshwater aquarium. Needless to say I have my work cutout in separating them and slowly accumulate them to Brackish water.

    clams and mussels have actually been shown to be quite unhealthy for pufferfish due to their thiaminase content, if anything cockles (while not great) dont have thiamin and are an okay supplement for them. i like doing clam shells filled with repashy grub pie. that works really well

    I have a green spotted, and a figure 8 that have been living together in a 30 gallon tank for about 2 years now. So is that an exception?

    My question is I’m looking into setting this up as a tank I’ve had Malawi cichlids for ten yrs and I’m done with the fighting and bs. I can easily take care of them and give them the quality water and food a puffer would need. My one and only concern is my cat like to play she never jumps on the tank. But she does like to look at glass real close would this be to much stress on the puffer and make it puff up?

      I think if you give the puffer plenty of hiding spots they should be fine

    What’s wrong with measuring with a hydrometer over a refractometer?

    • @piscespet1
      @piscespet1  2 года назад +1

      aquarium hydrometers can have issues with friction due to the swingarm, as well any build-up of salt residues can further affect their accuracy over time. Some people use brewing hydrometers but you need to make sure they're temperature calibrated for what you're mixing your water at as it can affect readings, as well the meniscus layer can affect the accuracy of readings. That's why it's usually easiest to use a refractometer, as they're quick, simple, and typically easy to calibrate!

    How long does it take a f8 puffer to get fully grown ?

    • @jamesbritt4025
      @jamesbritt4025 3 года назад +3

      I own two figure 8s and they really never changed in size much from when I got them

    • @piscespet1
      @piscespet1  3 года назад +1

      growth can be affected by a lot of things, age when you go get them, how often and what they're being fed, tank size, how often your doing water changes, even the photoperiod you use can affect growth rates! With an F8's lifespan, a typical amount of time to reach adult size is 1 1/2- 3 years

      @@piscespet1 I've read on line that they can get up to 4"
      Yet there's no evidence of this any where.

    • @piscespet1
      @piscespet1  3 года назад

      @@Fightssss the average max size based on forum research and personal experiences from staff in the store is 3", but 4" would be possible for sure, as every fish is different and max size really comes down to how they were cared for while doing the bulk of their growing

    What will happen if my 8 figure puffer stays in freshwater only?

    • @yearight1800
      @yearight1800 2 года назад

      They won’t live as long and put a lot of stress on it. I’ve had both and have a green spotted puffer in saltwater. Figure 8 puffers need to be in fresh and then brackish water you can transition them as babies as well. I did it with my puffer when he was a baby I’ve had him for 3 years now.
