What you need to realize is that the ones sold in fish stores are usually bread in regular water. Therefore you dont need to keep them in brackish water and then full salt because they are fully adapted to the water. I have 3 going on 2 years now.
Yeah I love green puffers and figure eight, I’ve been able to keep them for years after I discovered some tricks…. Hard water high PH as mentioned is more important than salt, or you can use less. I kept Java ferns and Vallisneria (I think) looks like seagrass, as plants that thrived in hard slightly brackish water, and had ghost shrimp too ironically. They love to eat those. Nice tank.

I also have a separate freshwater aquarium That I breed snails in and he loves them but I am concerned that he is not having to break the shells I think he just sucks them out LOL so I’m trying to make sure to give him things that will keep his beak from over growing. I also buy fresh shrimp from the grocery store and cut a small piece it has been going to the bottom and then he carries it around trying to bite it off I saw that you used a piece of nylon to dangle it in the tank so I’m going to try that as well. But mostly I am interested in finding out where to buy small clams. Thank you very much! It could be for different reasons. If you have a dark substrate, GSPs will try to blend in with the substrate, thus turning dark. If your puffer is very dark, not eating etc, he/she's sick. Another reason could be stress. If your puffer glass surf oftens and hides all day, could be stress. Besides that, after feeding, the underside of the belly might turn dark when the puffer's full and resting. Sometimes, when they sleep, they too turn dark or pale.
BeFishy thank you so much for the reply , she turn dark with their belly and will turn it white after in short Period, and she eat a lot , but one more things is her green color is not shining, just one small area on top of his head is look very good color in green , May I know what could be the reason ? VERY VERY good. I always see rather bad care videos on these guys. Happy this one is out here. Your puffer looks amazing! I find mine to consistently glass surf. Is there a way I can make his tank more interesting for him?

@@BeFishy sweeet. Thanks a lot. My tank actually just snapped its crossbeam today so I am upgrading from a 46 to a 55 for him. Weird timing for it to happen but hopefully his new tank will be mpre interesting for him
Love the video So as u know I have 2 GSP in a 29 Gallon. About a month ago I change the sand from white to black. I didn’t remove all the white sand. So it’s kind of blended in mixed. Ever since both puffers are now darker. And one isn’t as active as before. Their appetites remain the same but their both not as active and most of the time hover on the bottom under a piece of driftwood. Should I change the substrate back to white?
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it. With puffers, from other people's experiences, they like to try & blend in with dark substrates. You can try and change to lighter sand of you'd like. Also, Cheeto & Frito are the cutest! 😄
BeFishy I’m just going to change up the scape like u advised on the video. See if that changes their behavior. Maybe after a month or so I’ll change the sand to like a light brown and see. 😀 Thank you. Love your videos. Very informative
Hey! I got a green spotted one today. Not the best of form cos it was from LFS but doing fine so far. Can I ask, how do you feed it with cockles? Just open the shell and feed or do you clean n blanch it 1st? Thanks much :)
Hi! Congratulations on your new puff! Aww, I hope the guy comes around soon. As for cockles, I clean the shells when the cockle is still closed. Then, I crack them open for the puffs so it's in a half shell form. I don't clean the blood off as my puffers seem to enjoy it more and I find that the scent of blood attracts their attention. I do not blanch nor cook the cockles. Hope this answers you questions! :)
@@BeFishy Hi hi! My green puff keeps going up n down the corner of the tank, as if he is v obsessed with that area. Issit something i should be concerned about? His appetite is quite ok.
@@mokoliver8871 Hi! Usually, a bored or stressed puffer glass surfs. Ensure to have lots of hides or plants that the puffer can explore to prevent this. However, if the puffer is new, it will take some time for them to acclimate or get used to their new surroundings. 😄
Hi Don Yu! I deworm my GSP when I first got her in her quarantine tank. I don't deworm her regularly when she's healthy once she's in her tank. I would only deworm my puffers when I first got them and after if they show any symptoms. :D
Hi! There are a few updates I'd like to make in terms of care. We might do an updated care guide soon! As for salinity setting, I highly recommend cycling your tank at SG 1.015 straight to start off before purchasing green spotted puffers (even for juveniles).
Wow, I've just been throwing ramshorn snails and ghost shrimp straight from the pet store in my GSP's tank (I also vary her SG when I do a water change to help mimic what they may go through in the wild). Never had any problem. Not saying I'm doing it right, but it HAS been alive for over 5 years... As it gets older, I do increase the SG in general... So what other live food is there? I already do frozen clams on the half shell, frozen blood worms, etc.
That's awesome! I always say, if it works for you and your little puff is happy and healthy, you're doing it right! 😆 I feed mine gut-loaded earthworms as snacks for my puffers. 😄
thank you so much! i have fish as pets for 20 years but this one just became my favorite , i love him but i was sooo worried that if i touch him by mistake with open hand or put my hand in aquarium and have a small cut i will die :D:D
Salam ! THANKs alot . My GSP is having a bit of a problem I guess ? Its stomach sides have gone darkish grey ? Is that normal or is it sick pls help . Thanks
Salam! Is he still eating? How's his activity wise? Do let us know the water parameters, other tankmates, freshwater/brackish/marine waters, and what you feed him. Thank you!
وعلیکم السلام I dont think he eats that much ! activity is is just roaming slowly at the mostly the top of the Aquariam. Do you guys have a WhatsApp group or something I can send you the video. Thanks
If your tank size is suitable for a Green Spotted Puffer, have another go! This time, cycle it straight to the salinity you desire so it'll be smooth sailing. Acclimate the puffer to the salinity and you're good to go! We increase the salinity slowly from freshwater to saltwater in order to slowly transition the beneficial bacteria. However, this method I must say is more risky. Thus, cycling it to the desired salinity before getting the fish is best. :)
Thank you very much! 😄 At first, tannins would leech out of the wood but that's normal. I just did regular waterchanges and it went away. However, since I'm increasing my tank to almost saltwater salinity, I am starting to experience some degradation. I'm planning to change them to dry rocks! 😄
So when I bought my green spotted puffer the person working at the pet store said that the puffers they got were raised in fresh water and that I could keep it in fresh water for its whole life. I’ve had it for a month now and it seems to be doing fine. What do you think? Is the person at the pet store right or not?
Is it still a juvenile? If you leave it in freshwater, his health will slowly deteriorate. Definitely raise up the salinity slowly. Green Spotted Puffers are NOT freshwater fish.
I bought it as a adult and had it for a month now and seems to be doing fine, any symptoms I should look out for to tell if I should start converting into brackish
@@pentappinglikethat4743 Signs include wasting, inactivity, turning into a darker colour. I'd recommend increasing the salinity slowly as I mentioned in the video. Placing them in freshwater for a long time will cause unnecessary stress on its immune system as well as health issues. If you have a saltwater tank, you can drip acclimate him.
amazing info ty , your puffer so cute , i have question when you have time , what type of crab is that , and does the crab need air or can it stay underwater forever, great puffer video with info ty , planning to get one or the figer 8 type i thinking of going with the spotted i love yours so cute ty
Thank you very much! Hope it is helpful. That is a Malaysian crab. It lives underwater. Artemis says thank you! 😆😄 That's awesome. I love figure 8s and gsps both!!! All the best and enjoy your little puff 😆
No. They require different water parameters and condition. Do watch the video for further explanation. Fahaka puffers are freshwater puffers while GSPs are not.
Hi. How long since have you had your green spotted puffer and what are your water parameters? We may be able to help you more if we could see a photo of the fish. Please contact us through instagram @justbefishy.
I was sold this fish over a year ago as freshwater. I did more research and realized it was brackish to salt so I traded them in at my LFS. I still regret this to this day because I love puffers.
You're very responsible about your fish care and I love that! Something similar happened to me when I first started keeping brackish. I did some research about keeping Figure 8 Puffers and eventually got one. But since I was new in the brackish aquarium world, keeping him made me super anxious because I didn't want to mess up. In the end, I had to return him because caring for him gave me too much anxiety. However, afterwards I did more research on brackish water aquariums and I'm more confident in keeping brackish fish now. Still lots to learn but loving the learning process!
@@BeFishy thanks for your response. So I wouldn’t need to worry about their teeth growing until adult size? I feed them krill and half shelled clams right now
@@DrKlitamortus For green spotted puffers, they should be fed crunchy and meaty food from young juveniles as their teeth do grow quite fast. Improper diet will lead to overgrown teeth which may cause for them to starve to death. Ramshorn snails are perfect for them and thiaminase free.
I've never tried Hikari PraziPro personally but as the active ingredient is Praziquantel, you can. Soaking the puffer's food in medicine before feeding is much better in my experience.
I just got more! I’m getting some more, my goal for a project I’m doing is to have a big school of them in a brackish to full marine tank. They look really cool when you have a lot in a school of them
Hi, Great Video. Finally a stumbled upon a quality video from Malaysia. Question, I haven't seen any GSP in any of my local fish store in KL. Do you mind sharing where could I get a GSP?
Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. With puffers, it really depends on the stocking of a fish store. I found some in Xian Long, Shah Alam or Fish Depot, PJ. Hope this helps!
We've written the sizes in gallons and litres as it is more accurate. Aquariums come in different shapes and sizes and a 3 ft tall tank might have different measurements compared to 3 ft wide tank. You can measure your tank's gallon/litres by using an aquarium calculator found online. Just type in google and you'll find it. Hope it helps! 😄
Sama-sama. Harap membantu.

Hello! No worries. Saiz aquarium untuk 3 ekor tidak cukup. Satu ekor sebaik-baiknya 55 US gallons/208 LItres kerana mereka akan membesar. 😄
They grow up to 6 inches. When choosing a tank for any sort of fish, tank size differs for every species. Tank size is dependant on how much room the fish uses to swim and how big they get. For puffers, the bigger the tank the better. They are very curious. If kept in small sized tanks, they tend to get bored and sad. 😄
@@BeFishy Hi, I have two puffers that are almost 3.5 inches (9 cm) long. I think this size means they are almost full adults. They are in 1.008 salinity, 75 gallon. Sometimes they have bright white bellies and sometimes they are all grey and dark. Are they supposed to have white bellies at all times? The LFS person said they can be moody, and so the color changes are normal. What's your take?
@@paul528i Hi! Yes, puffers are moody and change colours according to their mood and surroundings or when they're sick or stressed. Your puffers seem to almost be at an adult size, they'd prefer a higher salinity at this stage. You can start increasing the salinity slowly. I've increased mine slowly as well as they grow and they have bright colours most of the time unless when they're full/relaxing or sleeping. :)

@@donyu84 No problem. I'm not an expert but I'll try to help as best as I can! Oh, how big is your puffer? I believe that's normal. Puffers change colours through their mood too. As long he doesn't look sick and is eating well, you're good! :D
BeFishy I think around 3 inches big , and my water is around 1.001 ,
@@donyu84 Ohh, in that case, please slowly increase the sg/salinity by 0.002 per week. She's quite big and needs to live in a higher salinity level.

I always see rather bad care videos on these guys. Happy this one is out here. Your puffer looks amazing!
I find mine to consistently glass surf. Is there a way I can make his tank more interesting for him?
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words. I find that adding caves and decorations/plants that can break their line of sight helps. More things for them to explore. :D
@@BeFishy sweeet. Thanks a lot. My tank actually just snapped its crossbeam today so I am upgrading from a 46 to a 55 for him. Weird timing for it to happen but hopefully his new tank will be mpre interesting for him
@@SlightlyCivil Sorry to hear that happened but everything happens for a reason. That's great! A 55 is perfect. :D
Love the video
So as u know I have 2 GSP in a 29 Gallon.
@@RaulsAquaticsandReptiles Can't wait to see the rescape. Love your videos too! Thank you for your support!

@@BeFishy Thank you!

Hi hi!
@@BeFishy Thanks for the advise :)
He is with me for 1 week and is still v shy when i appear at his tank.
He is about 2inches, is he still juvenile?
Hi , May I know will you deworm GSP Regularly even though she look healthy? Thanks
Hi Don Yu! I deworm my GSP when I first got her in her quarantine tank. I don't deworm her regularly when she's healthy once she's in her tank. I would only deworm my puffers when I first got them and after if they show any symptoms. :D
Great video,, what kind of crab is that your keeping with the puffer?
Thank you so much! They're Malaysian Freshwater Crabs.
This is a fantastic video!!! Great job!
Thank you very much! Hope it is helpful.
awesome work! would love to get one
at what point should you start acclimating your gsp to brackish environment if you bought them as juveniles?
I’ve had one since I was 17 I’m 21 now and it has moved with me multiple times such a wonderful and amazing puppy like fish
That's awesome! Yes! They are like water puppies. 😆💙
thank you so much! i have fish as pets for 20 years but this one just became my favorite , i love him but i was sooo worried that if i touch him by mistake with open hand or put my hand in aquarium and have a small cut i will die :D:D
How long would you recommend keeping them brackish before transitioning into full saltwater
I keep them in brackish starting mid juvenile and medium size and when they're on the larger, adult size, to full saltwater. :)
Thank you!
وعلیکم السلام
I dont think he eats that much ! activity is is just roaming slowly at the mostly the top of the Aquariam. Do you guys have a WhatsApp group or something I can send you the video. Thanks
@@edieeandtorres777 That is not normal behaviour. You can reach us via instagram @justbefishy or our facebook page at BeFishy. Link is in description.
I had no idea they had to transition into a full salt set up..i have a new tank and i been wondering what do??
If your tank size is suitable for a Green Spotted Puffer, have another go! This time, cycle it straight to the salinity you desire so it'll be smooth sailing. Acclimate the puffer to the salinity and you're good to go! We increase the salinity slowly from freshwater to saltwater in order to slowly transition the beneficial bacteria. However, this method I must say is more risky. Thus, cycling it to the desired salinity before getting the fish is best. :)
@@BeFishy sounds like a good idea..i may take another shot at it? Thanks!
Great video, Artemis has a gorgeous tank! Do you have any problems with the driftwood discoloring the water or degrading in the salt water?
Thank you very much! 😄 At first, tannins would leech out of the wood but that's normal. I just did regular waterchanges and it went away. However, since I'm increasing my tank to almost saltwater salinity, I am starting to experience some degradation. I'm planning to change them to dry rocks! 😄
How many gallons is that tank. Looks big
It's a 55 gallon tank.
I hope to find some GSPs someday, as I just have freshwater puffers currently. Nice care guide!
They're amazing! Thank you very much. We appreciate it!
Ok thank you
Another question: Could I feed a puffer garden snails? I know there hasn't been any pesticides used so are they safe?
Yes you can, but just make sure they're free from parasites, pesticides etc. 😄
@@BeFishy okay thank you 😎

I have fahaka puffer can i mix it with green spot puffer?
No. They require different water parameters and condition. Do watch the video for further explanation. Fahaka puffers are freshwater puffers while GSPs are not.
Ouh ok tq for info

My GSP fish not eating food why what happened this please help me
How big do they need to be to eat crawfish?
I'd say about 5 - 6 inches to be given only as treats.
Can I use Hikari PraziPro to treat for internal parasites.
They look really cool when you have a lot in a school of them
Nice! That sounds amazing!!! They are very cool.
My green spotted puffer is named suds what's yours?
Hi, Great Video. Finally a stumbled upon a quality video from Malaysia. Question, I haven't seen any GSP in any of my local fish store in KL. Do you mind sharing where could I get a GSP?
Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. With puffers, it really depends on the stocking of a fish store. I found some in Xian Long, Shah Alam or Fish Depot, PJ. Hope this helps!
not really understand with tank size by gallons.. can you give measurement by feet? like 2.5ft? 3fT?
We've written the sizes in gallons and litres as it is more accurate. Aquariums come in different shapes and sizes and a 3 ft tall tank might have different measurements compared to 3 ft wide tank. You can measure your tank's gallon/litres by using an aquarium calculator found online. Just type in google and you'll find it. Hope it helps! 😄
Terima kasih info.
Very informative video 👍
Perfect!!!! You gave the right information about GSP.. love your voice also. Congrats!!!!

Can I use natural sea salt?
Unfortunately no, you will need to use marine salt used for saltwater tanks such as Instant Ocean Salt.
@@BeFishy OK

maaf gabisa bahasa ingris.. saya baru beli 3 ekor, ukuran aquarium 40x25x25
kira2 di kasih garam ga? klo dikasih brp sendok
Hello! No worries. Saiz aquarium untuk 3 ekor tidak cukup. Satu ekor sebaik-baiknya 55 US gallons/208 LItres kerana mereka akan membesar. 😄

love these guys
They are so personable 🐡
How big do they get. Because he looks small to have a 55 to his self
Can you share your tank size in the video?
