  • Help! The handle on my outboard motor won't go back in and I can't start it. Easy fix for a bad recoil unit. Replace the broken spring or just re-seat it and preload so it works again.

    Thank goodness for you tube. To get the old spring out of mine I actually chucked it across the yard and it came popping out. Then I realized I threw the washer with it hahaha. Edit: a few hours later, I wound the thing backwards, and forgot the washer.

    Thank you for the video. I repaired my Johnson 15hp on the water today. The bolt backed off and the recoil assembly fell off. I couldn't figure out why, but if I tightened the bold back down, the rope wouldn't pull back in unless I loosened the bolt up. I guess the last guy who put it together put that small washer in the wrong place (on top of the big washer instead of inside the spring case).

    good job... my suggestion.. ALWAYS INSTALL A NEW ROPE too. I always keep a length of rope in my shed. If I take apart a recoil for any reason, I always put on a new rope. Even if the existing one is only a year old... .they get dry rot so might as well change it

    • @mbrenengen
      @mbrenengen  8 лет назад

      Excellent advice. After 40 years the integrity of the rope can be compromised.

  • @Humperdink444
    @Humperdink444 10 лет назад

    often times when the spring is being sucked in it is because the anchor point is bent. The metal gets bent outwards and wont hold the spring anymore. Just a thought. If you find yours is this way just whack it with a hammer until its flat again and it will hold the spring.

    Great video! I was very happy to have it all back together when I looked up and saw the washer on the bench. And that was AFTER I saw you do it! My ‘80’s vintage 9.9 has a small red ratcheting device of some kind that makes it really hard to re-install. Any ideas?

    • @christophermellor1809
      @christophermellor1809 Год назад

      The ratcheting device keeps the motor from being started with the throttle too high. It can be removed (mine doesn't return with the throttle when you turn it down)

    I reassembled my recoil starter but how do you add tension to it or do you need to. I tightened down the bolt and it was hard to turn the recoil starter and it would just go slack, but hone i would loosen the bolt it started to wind back. any tips?

    • @mbrenengen
      @mbrenengen  2 года назад

      You have to wind it a couple turns before you bring the string out. Also make sure the washer is in the right place so it turns easily.

  • @michaelgomez2541
    @michaelgomez2541 3 года назад

    I am having trouble getting the bolt to tighten up all the way. I have a feeling the gear slips because it is stripped on the bottom of the insert of the bolt. I have a feeling the bolt is not tightening because the bottom is stripped. Will getting a new bolt will fix the problem? Any suggestions??

    • @mbrenengen
      @mbrenengen  3 года назад

      That doesn't sound like the problem to me. Take the recoil unit out and see if the bolt will go on all the way. Look at the washers and make sure you have them in the right place too.

  • @h-townfishing1382
