    Great video! I think I would take the starter off first. That would make the access easier but watching you solve the problems is worth the price of admission. Thank you for sharing your techniques.

    I just recently (June 14/24) took the carb off my 9.9 and to get at that one nut on the carb easier, I took the pull cord assembly off which took no time at all... easy peezy. Just make sure you u zip tie it together so that it doesn't spring apart. When putting that nut back on the carb, grab it by the handle and set it down on the ground or work bench.... this way you have a better chance of the nut sitting flat on the threads.... easy peezy!

    Avoid the headache, grab a 9/16 open end wrench and a long zip tie (or anything to hold the pull rope starter together), and remove that top starter bolt and set starter to the side and it makes it a world of difference.

    I had luck with temporarily removing the recoil starter to get to the flat head screw and the other carb nut. I just held a recoil in my hand to keep it from flying apart and put it back on until I was done with carb rebuild.

      Yes definitely don't let the spring go. Not the end of the world if it does. I'm working on one now that I have a spring on order for.

      I just use some electical tape to hold recoil assembly together and then just hang it over the side

      @@Michaelsbackyardmarina Sorry I didn't see the notification for your comment. I am using West Marine TC-W3. I think where I went wrong is that I was using the old gas can and I just added the oil to the can without making sure it was shaken. After getting a new fuel tank, the chunks are gone, but now it wont stay running without having to keep playing with the choke. Also the plugs were fouled. I just got my carb kit in the mail! Time for a rebuild. With your video should be no prob! Thank you RMD

      That's what I just did too. My motor got submerged in a storm last night. I hate having to go thru my motors every time one gets swamped in the lake because the only thing that comes to us out of Fargo, ND is 80 mph winds lol. Now I remember why I hate renting out my small Lund Boats with Evinrude motors lol.
      I had to laugh when he said his fuel line was held on by a zip tie and he didn't think that was stock. Guess again lol.

    If the transmission lever is in forward, can it be hand cranked? I have a 1978 model. I can't seem to move it to neutral with the engine off. I'm relatively new to these old 2-stroke engines.

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina
      @Michaelsbackyardmarina  4 года назад

      they are designed so you can't start them in gear for safety reasons on newer models like in the 80s. Not sure about a 78. Mostly they have a throttle lock out to minimize the ability to rev the engine without it being in gear.

    RMD Creations I have a 1986 Johnson 15 hp and when it starts it will idle super high and then go low and then high again and sometimes when I start it it will start to idle super high and then I can’t turn it off even when I disconnect fuel and choke it. Do you have a solution to make it idle smoother?

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina

    These motors suffer from primary vacuum loss often. because the crankshaft seals dry out and leak. Causing rough idle
