A Theory About FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH's Ending!

  • In this video I share a theory I have about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's ending. Obviously the video (and the description below) contains spoilers... spoilers from both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth, as well as from the Classic Final Fantasy VII.
In the classic FF7, Aerith is killed by Sephiroth in the Forgotten Capital. We get a similar cutscene of Aerith's death in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but with something very different: the middle portion now features Cloud fighting Sephiroth off.
In this video I explain why I think that we will still get the full cutscene of Aerith's death in the final part of the Remake trilogy.

I don’t know if he created a new timeline or not. However I do think that he did save her in his timeline but sephiroth merged in another timeline. This alternate timeline was one where aerith died. So now you have a timeline that combines 2. I think this is why we are getting flashes of aerith being alive and dead, with and without blood. At that current time she’s both dead and alive since she is a merged being of one dead aerith and one alive aerith. For a brief moment I think even tifa sees the glitching happen and that’s probably due to her brief time in the mako and the lifestream when she’s swallowed by the whale. This immediately lead to the fight with sephiroth. After the fight the timelines are separated again but this time, cloud is in the wrong timeline. He isn’t in the timeline he’s originally from. He’s in the one where aerith died, the one that sephiroth chose to merge. Some clues of this are aeriths body position being on her side which is inconsistent with how cloud placed her originally. Another is the fact that there is a crack in the sky something that till now only happens in alternate timelines. As for the aerith ghost, I believe that is either the dead aerith of the alternate timeline cloud is currently in, an astral projection of cloud original aerith, or some other version of aerith(possibly the aerith from the OG PS1 game I can explain more if you’d like.).
So to sum up, cloud is in the wrong timeline and he did save aerith in his original timeline.

Cloud saved & failed to save Aerith at the same time because until the reunion of the realities, every big decision is going to have an alternative outcome.what happens when the reunion happens, I couldn't say... maybe everyone will join together to fight Sephiroth. Maybe those outside the main timeline are unmade along with their realities... who knows?! But I think they will have a part to play in the ending! Whether or not they stay alive afterwards? I have no idea!

The only reason why I can’t fully get behind this theory is because after defeating Jenova Lifeclinger, cloud gets transported with Zack to the edge of creation to fight Sephiroth. The party reacts to the fact that he’s gone, they don’t know where but he’s gone right before the group’s fight with Sephiroth Reborn. There has gotta be some literal takes with what happened. I do believe Aerith died in the timeline we’ve been playing in, but he saved a different Aerith? Red was able to feel Aerith’s presence, the one that Cloud is able to see. Cloud is losing it but the Aerith he sees is real.

Another thing folks are missing is Sephiroth directly addresses Aerith when she shows up, stating he underestimated her. Both Sephiroth and Aerith are playing 99 dimensional chess against one another. Another interesting point is the glitched out scenes are always from clouds point of view, but it changes to the perspective of Tifa and the party when they roll up on dead Aerith. I think there is absolutely an Aerith that is alive somewhere, and that needs to be a closely guarded secret from Sephiroth. Cloud would be the perfect patsy as Sephiroth is constantly fucking with him and breaking him down.

@@Myxboxisonfire yeah there’s that, too. Kinda reminded me of Xehanort vs Eraqus. The whole Tifa and party thing, is a bit confusing for me but the way I see it is that it’s still from cloud’s pov. When we see the blood, that’s what they’re seeing and what really happened in the remake/rebirth timeline. They showed the group during the glitches to insinuate what really happened. The glitch with no blood is what cloud wants to see but also what actually happened for him? Yeah I’m still a bit confused lol

I’m like 90% sure that something happened to cloud specifically. I think she did die, but in doing so her consciousness merged with the Lifestream Aerith we know existed, and in the moment she died also casted a veil over clouds eyes, making him belive she’s alive. That’s why he keeps getting these red visions, that’s Sephiroth trying to make him realize he killed her, and have him breakdown, but if Cloud never realizes she died, then his mental state will be somewhat normal. That’s and I believe that she is fighting for control of Clouds mind, since Sephiroth is manipulating him
He can see her physically when it’s just her presence within the lifestream, She felt Zachs earlier in the game, and Red sensed her, so she’s there just like in OG, but this time cloud actually sees her and whatever that Riff is

    • @Pringlessingles
      @Pringlessingles 4 месяца назад +3

@@Myxboxisonfire In my opinion I think there are 2 timelines to focus on in regards to aeriths death. It starts in the timeline we’ve been playing in, we’ll call it the remake timeline. When cloud blocks sephs, he truly saves her but sephiroth decides to merge another timeline into the fold, we’ll call this one alternate timeline. When he merges the two timelines he’s merging a dead and alive aerith and that’s why we get these flashes between her being dead and her being alive. The reason why tifa notices is possibly due to her time in the lifestream with the weapon(the whale thing that swallowed her). After the fights with sephiroth, the timeline split apart but cloud is in the wrong timeline now. He is in the alternate timeline, the one in which Aerith is dead. I think that explains why there’s the crack in the sky now. So far that crack has only appeared in the alternate timelines, not the main one. The aerith ghost we see at the end is not the remake timeline aerith, it’s the alternate one. As to why tifa can’t see this I’m not sure. Perhaps she wasn’t in the lifestream and mako long enough to have the same ability as cloud.

I'm saying that Sephiroth succumbed to Jenova, and Jenova was the Sephiroth we fought at the end. Like what he said He becomes what you fear, what you love, and those you hate and admire. We don't know what happen to the real Sephiroth after the incident in Nibleheim. It's literally what Cloud feels about Sephiroth. The thing with Arieth is all about the white materia ( holy materia ) I think once it glows , it means she's truly there, once it's transparent she isn't. The black materia that cloud has, isn't the same one that Sephiroth ( Jenova ) have. She must had created it or duplicate it, because the Body ( Jenova ) they uncovered was a Cetra " ancient "
My take is that The real Sephiroth is stuck in the life stream, and probably he had suffer like cloud did. I hope in the next installment we get him in the party. And solo play him for what he actually seek on the otherside when he got stuck. And the real antagonist is Hojo and the resurrection of that ancient. Because "Jenova" was buried locked for a reason.
Also apparently Sephiroth was trying to save the planet in his own way. When the whole Story says otherwise.

It’s pretty obvious if you ask me: they want us to doubt Cloud’s perspective, but he is seeing things right for the most part. Cloud essentially created another timeline after fighting off Sephy’s control and blocking the Masamune above Aerith. In the main timeline, she dies, but in him blocking Sephy, he created another timeline, one where Aerith actually lives and destiny is changed.
People think that destiny is the theme of this project, but that’s not the full picture. The theme is about having the will to overcome it and CHANGE destiny. Zack was another example of this, where he was fated yet again for a 3rd time to get chased down and killed by a mob of Shinra troops, but he said screw this pretty much, jumped off and over the Shinra reactor railing, and was able to get to Aerith’s Sector 5 church in another universe in a very “TO BE CONTINUED” type of fashion

While I think the interpretation of Cloud's losing it and seeing things wrong, about Aerith death, is my favorite one... The rainbow effects seem to indicate that Cloud did, at that moment, create a new timeline.
During the whole ending, the rainbow light is used to indicate moments where a new timeline has been created. Zack shows it clearly when he is choosing what path to takes on the tunnels.
So, while we may end up with Cloud going (even more, lol) insane and not really processing Aerith's death. There is in fact a timeline when he reflected Sephiroth's sword.

    Either:
    1. Cloud is suppressing that Aerith really died here.
    2. Writers are subverting Cloud's insanity plot-line by keeping him insane, but also having it be true that he saved at least 1 Aerith.
We will find out either way when Tifa heals Cloud's spirit (with Aerith's presence in the life-stream protecting them). The writers either want us to feel the same way as in 1997 when Aerith died the first time, or they are writing a happy ending. I'm going to guess finally defeating Sephiroth would involve Cloud forgetting who he is, but also that means forgetting Aerith entirely because Sephiroth appears at the same moment that Cloud meets Aerith in Ch.2 or Remake.

While I now subscribe to the Aerith lives in AU theory. I initially thought that Aerith was a force ghost and that Cloud was just going more insane but..........the twist of Cloud before he gives the materia to Sephiroth was something we didn't see coming originally. I don't think they would just have Cloud BE insane and have us, the audience know that's insane? Less of a twist that way. Also I don't think Aerith, even as a force ghost, would just lead Cloud on and from the way she acts at the ending i don't think she's just a hallucination of Cloud's.

Based on all the things we've been given in the final like two chapters of the game. This is what I think.
We are given several different clues during the chapters leading to the scene.
    1. We the audience are shown that alternate timelines are created when paths 'diverge' The diverging paths are seemingly symbolized with a rainbow of light effect (In the Zack timeline when he has to choose what to do)
    2. Aerith and Cloud (possibly others) are seemingly connected to their alternate timeline selves. Aerith feels her other timeline self when Zack touches her hand. Cloud frequently sees through his AU selves eyes when he sleeps.
    3. Cloud himself is pulled into his AU self where he 'wakes up' in a new body, given the white materia and then sent back.
Cloud blocks the strike with a rainbow effect. We are then SHOWN but not able to HEAR his 'death dialouge'. Later we are also NOT SHOWN her water burial. These are SUPER important scenes. Even if you were going to have Aerith 'die' anyway and maybe live on as a 'force ghost' WHY WOULD YOU NOT INCLUDE THOSE SCENES........unless there is a reason.
Aerith in the AU is shown to be awake, and alert. BUT we are then shown her fighting side by side with cloud and then seemingly fade away. Cloud had his fight with Sephiroth and comes back, in the scene with the rest of the group, it fades to a seemingly alternate plane where he asks her to 'wake up' and she does. I think Aerith in the Rebirth universe did die and fade away at the end of the fight but then 'transferred' to her AU self similarly to how Cloud did in the previous chapter.
Now.....WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS MEAN? The reunion, as being implied by Sephiroth is going to seemingly involve a merging of worlds. This may mean Aerith and Zack may somehow return? It could involve any number of Multiverse Shennanigans. I am gathering though from the foreshadowing that even though Aerith 'lives' being on a different world may mean that she and Cloud may still have to part ways with no definite proof they can/will meet again.

Here is my take on the new story and where it is going:
Contrary to popular belief, the focal point of this story isn't the multiverse or the concept of force ghosts. The lifestream emerges as the central element both in the OG and here.
The depiction of the lifestream in the story bears resemblance to the idea of parallel timelines or universes. However, there's a significant difference: in a traditional multiverse scenario, there are countless variations of everything, encompassing infinite possibilities. Yet, in this narrative, these parallel worlds are more spiritually intertwined, catering to individual experiences.
This explains why certain choices appear to spawn new worlds while others don't. There's essentially one tangible physical universe, and all the other variations occur within the overarching lifestream.
Despite Aerith's apparent death across timelines, it's not solely about multiple universes. Rather, everything seems intricately connected to the lifestream. This connection becomes apparent as characters like Zack intervene in Cloud's journey, despite their expected demise. This intertwining is reminiscent of the thematic elements explored in Advent Children.
Cloud's continued interaction with Aerith, despite her supposed death, hints at a complex interplay with the lifestream. She seems to exist in some form through its influence, though not entirely corporeal. Cloud's perception of her presence reflects his own interpretation of this phenomenon, influenced by his fractured state of mind amidst the blurred boundaries between realities. His ongoing struggle to navigate these intertwined worlds may exacerbate his descent into madness.
In this iteration, the developers have endowed Sephiroth with a deep understanding of the lifestream's mechanics. Exploiting this knowledge, Sephiroth manipulates Cloud even more profoundly, leveraging the lifestream's interactions to further entrench his control over him.
This interpretation illuminates a crucial exchange during the final confrontation:
"So, what do you make of all this, Cloud? Is this real or a fever dream?"
"Cut it out! That won't work on me... not anymore!"
Sephiroth's laughter underscores the effectiveness of his manipulation, hinting at its profound impact on Cloud's psyche.
When the Northern Cave sequence happens in part 3, Cloud is going to be broken even more, not just by realizing that he's not a SOLDIER but by the fact that Aerith has been dead for ages. And when that moment happens, we'll see Aerith's death in its true form: Cloud's last words to her and the water burial. Aerith's death, the tragedy, its still intact. It's just been repurposed slightly to further drive Cloud insane.

Ok I have a few issues with this theory, 1 - why do we see the rainbow effect on clouds sword and around aerith which matches where timelines cross? 1- her footsteps are surronded by this light and not the lifestream green, her not having the white materia tells me she is the one from the church. 3. why does cloud see the mutliverse ribbon in the sky and the others dont?
for me this means he saved her in the main time line and he is currently in an alternative timeline with the party. aertih and zack will return in the sephiroths homecoming the reunion of timelines that he discussed with cloud.
If she is just dead it would make the whisperers the biggest waste of time across two, probably three games with no relevance at all.

I think Aerith died in the original timeline and is alive the rebirth one. In remake the whispers are arbiters of fate who wants events to stay the same as the original. When Remake did a recent upgrade, they changed Aerith’s last line, she used to say, “I miss it. The steel sky” she now says, “This sky..I don’t like it” why doesn’t Aerith like “this sky” because she is in the original game and timeline.
Aerith death scene. Aerith dies in the original world, you can see Cloud muttering words as he holds her body, just like the original game.
Rebirth timeline. Cloud saves Aerith, when he screams no, you can see the rainbow touch Cloud sword, you can even hear the electric static noise as it touches his sword, as Cloud deflects Sephiroth sword you can see rainbows, the same at the church and sleepy forest and the white whispers were with Aerith before her death.
Original world. Tifa is kneeling beside Aerith body, as Cloud approaches the white whispers appear and Cloud walks through them and it looks like he is walking into a different timeline and the others disappear.
Aerith only destiny to die in the original game and the original world and she did. Creating new worlds means her destiny can changed and it did, it gives her a chance to live and be happy. The rainbows must mean something because it was at the church, sleepy forest and her death scene.

I agree with this, except I think the point of the game is destiny cannot be defied. Cloud saved Aerith. But Sephiroth now in control of the whispers changed fate. He needed to create a situation where cloud did save her. But still lost her inexplicable to create the ultimate feeling of loss and pain. Which he seems to need for some reason to merge timelines. Zack will always die. Biggs will always die and Aerith will always die. And most important is. Sephiroth will always be defeated and die. No matter how hard he tries to change fate. He will not succeed. I think it goes along perfect with the theme of loss, fate and destiny of the OG.

@@Jarrod561 not so, I've had time enough to look at more points that I think I know what happened now.
FF7 Remake the black Whispers were Jenova's... however after the defeat of the Arbiter of Fate, Sephiroth tool over them denoted by the purple orb where a face should be!
The white Whispers are controlled by the planet.
Ever since that moment on the expressway in Remake and Sephiroth splitting Zack from his Fate when he was dragging Cloud to Midgar created alternate timeliness, not just one but many! Also more alternate timeliness are still being created not just by Sephiroth but by the planet as well... some of them I'm not sure if Sephiroth is aware of just yet, I mean it's possible he knows but maybe not.
For example Zack when he was faced with saving Biggs or getting a cure for Cloud... in the end he did both denoting a divergent timeline. The rainbow glow IMHO denotes a divergent timeline.
When Sephiroth struck Aerith down the rainbow glow was centered around them denoting a divergent timeline and also glimpsed when Cloud saved Aerith but also when Aerith died simultaneously.
This is kinda further backed up when Metor is about to destroy Zack but then the White Whispers push him through a portal to another timeline and he wakes up in the Church again (I got no idea which timelime Zack is now in) the Aerith Cloud saved I'd in a parallel timeline with the now main timeline, but I don't know if Sephiroth is aware that there's a parallel timeline and that Zack is alive in yet another timeline...

I love Aerith and seeing her death, it gave me hope she might be alive in a different timeline but I thought about it, Sephiroth took control of Cloud’s mind, Cloud gave back the materia, saved Aerith from falling, Aerith and Cloud fell. All what happened in Chapter 14, never happened, the game just wanted to show us how messed up Cloud mind is, in game three, Tifa is going to repair his mind and he is going to realize Aerith is dead, none of what happened in chapter 14 took place, church scene etc. and here I made a huge list for my reason why Aerith might be alive only to realize I was wrong. I was hoping she would have a chance to live and be happy 😢

      @VideoGamsShowcase
I'm inclined to agree the zoom-in could've meant something but would've liked the white materia to have been visible in her hair before hair beforehand.
      Still a great video.
Leading up to the release of Part 2. The devs would be asked in interviews-
"Are will still gonna do this?"
"Are we still gonna go there?"
      And the directors would respond-
      "Yes you're gonna go there."
"Yes you're gonna do most of that."
And they were honest for the most part.
So if they reaffirm we're still gonna do most of the same stuff in the original before the release of Part 3, I'll be secure in my faith.

  • @D3ltaFreedom

Great video, you make good points. Spoiler: My question for the developers at Square Enix is why create this convoluted story in Remake/Rebirth, that incorporates the quasi scientific literature of the "Multiple World Interpretation" of quantum mechanics; Aerith will be killed, regardless of the outcome? If Square Enix was seeking to create a story where Aerith remains intact, physically speaking, then a variation of the Multiple World Interpretation would have been a great opportunity to create such a universe, where she survives. Therefore, if Aerith will die anyway, why not just recreate a faithful adaptation of the original 1997 Final Fantasy 7 game, excluding the multiple planes of existence, and or timelines in different space time continuums?

First off, Cloud in Rebirth is NOT the Cloud from Remake (or OG for that matter). Cloud in Rebirth is from a universe in which Tifa dies in Nibelheim at Sephiroth's hands. Both Cloud and Sephiroth explicitly state this. Note that Cloud's recollection of the bridge in Nibelheim collapsing is likely actually correct (i.e. - he correctly remembers Zack being the one swept away by the river). This means Zack wasn't alive to escape the experiments with Cloud, perhaps suggesting Cloud escaped by himself, or, even more interestingly, maybe the source of his confusion isn't actually mako poisoning and is instead because he has lost pieces of his memory just as Aerith has because he somehow defied destiny to cross over into Rebirth's universe. Recall that Tifa even reiterates that Cloud isn't degrading from mako poisoning because he's actually progressing by remembering Zack died at the river (further implying Zack died at the river in Remake's universe as well, if we assume Rebirth's Tifa is Remake's Tifa).
Now, as for the Aerith scene - it's very simple. The universe Rebirth takes place in prior to Aerith surviving/dying is not the same universe as the one Rebirth takes place in after Aerith surviving/dying. In other words, Cloud indeed saves Aerith in the universe Rebirth takes place in all throughout the game up until that point, but then Rebirth switches over to a universe in which Aerith actually died in that scene. Hence, everyone besides Cloud acting like she's dead for the remainder of the game. As for why Cloud can see and interact with Aerith as though she's alive - I'm not quite sure - but he somehow can. Few possibilities here.
I also suspect that the Aerith that gave Cloud the white materia is actually Jenova, and thats why the white materia actually transforms into the black materia prior to him reacting confused and slotting it into his sword. This would be interesting because in that universe in which Aerith says she really likes Cloud and acts "weird" and gives him the white materia, the planet has been stripped of the lifestream (which is the whole reason why the planet is doomed in that universe in the first place), and so the Sephiroth in that universe can't actually gather the Promised Land's lifestream on that universe's Gaia to utilize the black materia in the first place; hence, might as well give it to a Cloud in a universe with a Sephiroth who can use it.
My theories have holes, but they're the best I have at the moment. Please try to refute them so we can get to the bottom of all of this!!

The thing that makes me believe that he is seeing 2 timelines and isn’t just crazy is because it isn’t just that he is seeing Aerith, first up he is seeing the crack in the sky, which when we jump around we notice it isn’t there when the camera is focused on other characters. Then the issue with the materia he is holding, for one second it’s the empty white materia (which doesn’t exist in his timeline anymore) and then a second later when he looks back at it, it becomes the black materia
I have my own theory, that cloud is kind of similar to Sephiroth in that he has one singular consciousness throughout the timelines, where everyone else just has independent copies of themselves, however as opposed to sephiroth who can control his bodies across multiple timelines, cloud has to be unconscious to operate in a different timeline……at first (I’ll come back to this)
Something that happens when timeline shenningans happen, weather they diverge merge or seperate, there is this weird rainbow light screen effect, we see it with Biggs talking about waking up, we see it with Zack talking about surviving his last stand, we see it when Zack makes a decision between going to the mako reactor (save Biggs) or go to Shinra HQ (save cloud)
We also see it radiate faintly off cloud when Zack sees him in that white void we then see it when they are separated, we see it when Aerith joins the final fight, and the two most important points imo is that we see it radiate off clouds sword when he blocks sephiroths strike
And lastly we see it when Zack fights sephiroth alone, if you use a synergy attack, we see a spectral cloud silhouetted by this rainbow light rush forward and attack sephiroth, even when they are in seperate worlds.

I dont think cloud is losing it as much as its stated, the fact that Red is able to feel aeriths presence proves that Cloud is not hallucinating, he is losing it a bit yes, but this is clearly not a hallucination, the clue being Red as well as the other clue being the sky, those two things indicate that Cloud can somehow see the other timeline, Aerith died and also did not die, she is alive in another timeline but also dead in rebirths timeline. The fact that Cloud can see other timelines is most likely probably because of Cloud traveling to other timelines, similar to the fact that being in contact with the whispers allows you to see the whispers.

I can see why you'd come to this conclusion. However, there are a few issues with it.
First, Aerith thanks Cloud for what he "did back there" which is a clear confirmation that Cloud did, in fact, deflect Sephiroth's blade.
Second, the party "defeated fate" by defeating the Whispers at the end of Remake. So Aerith always Being destined to die would make the Whispers narratively redundant. Why introduce entities in Remake that only have the purpose of protecting the course of fate, to then show them being defeated, just to say "it was always inevitable". What exactly would the Whispers be trying to protect if fate was inevitable no matter what happens between point A and point B, even if the Whispers themselves are defeated? It wouldn't make any sense.
Finally, Sephiroth is clearly shown to have knowledge of the events in the OG game. So why would Sephiroth kill Aerith again, when his murder of Aerith is the exact reason his plan failed the first time around? It would make Sephiroth look incredibly inept.

Except she doesn't die in the Main world. Tifa had static and saw both worlds. One, Aerith is covered in blood. Two, Cloud blocked Sephiroth and Aerith isn't harmed. Now, here's how you know which is which. Seph needed to force Cloud and company into the World Between Worlds with the key to get the black materia. This happened right when Tifa saw static. The WBW Temple is not on the Northern continent, only in the Main. The WBW is the OG game.

As such everyone but Cloud (because of him being behind the whisper wall and or having traveled between dimensions) experiences the memories of what is 'supposed to happen' and only Cloud sees what did happen? Tifa gets flashes of her living but not enough to not override the 'way things are supposed to go'? Wow that makes the thing even more tragic, Aerith living but no one able to like see, or hear her?
