Transforming Old Quilt Blocks into a Fresh Design!

- I turned some vintage circle blocks into a modern quilt in my quest to finish all my UFO's. There was no easy way to finish these blocks because there was only 10 of them so I did the best I could with what I had. I may end up adding a 12.5 inch strip across the top to offset the 'caterpillar' to the bottom and square up the quilt.
In the month of December I will try to get ALL of my UFO's ready to be quilted, so follow along as I clear out some space in my quilt room!

I believe ut shows respect to use someones handwork.
The person who sewed it had different tastes from their grandparents.
I would be very pleased if my great niece and nephew reworked my handmade things to enjoy them in their style.
Nice job.
I love how modern it is! It's a great design!
Great way to use the blocks without chopping them all to heck and bridging the generations of quilters.
Excellent design AND you are on a roll. I decided recently to make as many tops as possible whether they "turn out" or "not" because it seems like I can always do something like cut the top in half and add a pieced border made of strips, or like you have done, create a different layout. I believe the instructor Sandi Fox always said that if something was not working, to keep adding borders. Half square triangles will be a go-to for me. Another could be a line of flying geese.
I love it! And you could add a row to each end and add a caterpillar head & end. It reminds me of a dog quilt I seen once done very similarly. Uber cute kids or summer quilt if it's a caterpillar 🥰
that would be so cute! 😍
I like how you laid that out. Great job.
thanks! It's definitely the most minimalist quilt I've ever done
Cute design. Baste the edges, soak the whole top in Oxiclean for about a half hour. The water will turn the color of tea and your old muslin will match the new muslin. Rinse well, launder on cool/gentle, lay flat to dry, then quilt as usual.
Absolutely do not recommend oxiclean on anything you care about. I used to use it on husband's work jeans & bath towels. Both fabrics broke down & disintegrated 😢
I love it! Great job ❤
Thank you! I really love this one! I am still really scared to do the wrong thing to these vintage blocks, I do want to get them finished though. I am doing the best I can to get everything done and still honor the original quilter.
I alwyas love what you make. No quilt police here Thanks for sharing
thank you! I am very happy with it so far. Can't wait to see how quilting will finish it
Oh, by the way. I have been piecing/quilting for over 40 years. The most consistent advice I have heard along the way is do whatever you want. It is your quilt. You use cotton fabric, good thread, get nice stitching with the machine. That is all you need. Needle and thread. With your videos you can set more sewists free to be less inhibited about "doing something wrong" or something not authentic. No such thing.
Love it!
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun bringing these old blocks to life.
Tea staining might help to make the color more uniform or you can just embrace what it is. Once it’s quilted it may be less noticeable. I love the layout and the way you go with the flow.
that's a great idea! I'll see what it looks like after a good 'retro clean' soak and if it doesn't even up I may try that! 🩷
@ if you have a small piece of the new muslin I’d recommend a sample dip. Perhaps include some of the trimmed bits off the original blocks if you have any to see how that fabric takes to the tea stain. Good luck.
By quilt, do you mean quilt top?
what is your accent? Pennsylvania Dutch?
I live in Northern Appalachia, the hills of SE Ohio. I don't know if there's a name for our accent though.
@@kayla_quilts I'm a linguist and I was having trouble placing it. I was close - I think. Love your content.
Love it!
