    Always check the upper sump bolts when taking the top cover off, they come loose and cause the aluminum case to crack. These engines are the worst engines ever designed.

    I will say that this engine repair is the only one of which I use a torque wrench. Kohler actually tells you that these engines are prone to leak and to keep several of those gaskets in stock. The valve cover is also prone to warping especially if you over tighten. So, the torque specifications are to tighten 65 lbs/in if you are using a previously threaded engine head, and 95 lbs/in if you are using a new head in which you are creating the threads as you install the screws. Thank you for all that you do for us.

      I second the "warping" of the valve cover. I ALWAYS check their trueness.

    When you replaced the valve cover you tightened the cover correctly, from the center out, you likely do it from habit but it would be good to mention for younger/newer people to the mechanical world.

I genuinely think my tire is about to separate from the hub so I stopped on the side of the highway. Sherrifs deputy pull up behind me and I explain what's wrong. She finds an acorn (or some other nut) wedged in my front passenger caliper. That was wild haha I've never had to deal with animals preparing for winter like that.

    READ THIS!!! If you have a Kohler courage engine on your mower, there are 3 common major issues I've found. First, valve cover gasket leak, which is covered in this video. Second, the valve adjustment will get very sloppy over time, causing pushrods to snap. Third, and the most major issue with these engines is the side plate bolts rattling loose. The vibrations of this engine will loosen nearly all the bolts around and near the flywheel. When this happens, the bolts rattle in their holes, ultimately leading to the block starting hairline cracks. If not taken care of. The block will in some cases crack entirely in half. When you're doing the job in this video, take the side plate bolts of the engine off one at a time, apply loctite, and re-torque to spec. Seriously, if you have a Kohler Courage single cylinder 597cc ranging from about 17-21 hp, this job must he done or at least checked. I think on some later models Kohler applied more loctite to the bolts.

      Kohler courage is a damn piece of crap. Mine started to make abnormal noises so, I shut it off . I've saw some oil dripping from the sump seal. I took off the bottom pulley and, noticed a nail clipping size (half moon) hole beside the sump seal. Something came apart internally. The engine had 72 hours of use. I called Kohler and, they didn't want to bend the rules, a little since, the warranty was over for 21 days. Not a month or 2 or 3.............21 days !!! Dear Kohler sales reps. I hope you get ass raped by a moose.

      Its newer than all my old Kohler engines the valve cover gasket is a easy fix specially when you can buy a gasket instead of making it all my cv models of Kohler engines run and work long as the carburetor bowl is new
      My problem with the older cv Kohler engines is the carburetor bowl corroding inside on the bottom and sides of the bowl the white corrosion makes the float stick either open or closed and a brand new carburetor lasts for a few months or to a year on the cv models so i quit using my cv models of Kohler because of that and I've tried better gasoline even the gas treatment stuff the metal bowl still corrodes inside

  • @lorettacaputo6997
    @lorettacaputo6997 5 лет назад +1

    I had an oil leak and then a smoke situation on an older mtd lawn tractor that puzzled me for some time. I wished that it was the valve cover situation and after dealing with drips below the mower and puddles on the lawn tractor engine deck. I found out that the leak was the sump pump engine gasket. The break in the gasket was just enough to allow oil to seep out at operationg temperature and then find its way onto the hot cylinder head and smoke when it was really getting bad. Replacement of the sump gasket fixed it, but the engine had to be removed and opened up. The engine was a tecumseh. Dipstick oil ring was suspect, main bearing seals, valve cover also. Suspect the sump gasket if all else fails.

    @donyboy73 Dony - i've switched to K100 because of your videos & got some friends to switch also. i have a neighbour who is really smart/handy/mechanical....but says to me for his push-lawnmower that he, " doesn't need fuel stabilizer, i burn 2 gallons at a time & i run it out of gas come fall/winter & i have a plastic gas tank. " To me that is frustrating to hear & he won't take some of my K100 stabilizer for free, just says he has no use for it. *(aside from the video you made) What sort of argument or point of view can i use to convince him he needs to use it?*

      If he is running it out of fuel then he is correct. The fuel stabilizer is useful if you don't run it dry and instead leave the fuel in it. However by running it dry there is no fuel in places that would need to be stabilized.

    The gasket will always leak again. Do not use the gasket. Use a gasket maker called THE RIGHT STUFF. Follow the directions. It will never leak again.

    Dony, I'm curious to see how long that repair will last. It is a terrible design by Kohler and they put out a Service Bulletin #325 that suggest a revised valve cover and using just RTV silicone with no gasket.

    • @eosjoe565

      It seems Briggs went the same route and started using silicon sealer instead of valve cover gaskets.

    • @gregh.7977
      @gregh.7977 5 лет назад +4

      The way he did the repair will last for years. The reason the gasket leaks at the bottom is because it's right above the muffler. It's made of cork and gets baked, brittle and shrinks.

    • @dkupy100
      @dkupy100 5 лет назад

      @@gregh.7977 Well I hope so, but he reused the gasket at 5:15 and it has a split at the bottom bolt hole where the leak is.
