  • In this video I will show you how to replace a universal joint on your vehicles drive line. This process is similar on other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and Comanche. But today I will show you how to do it on a 1997-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ. Today I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. If you have any other questions that the video doesn't cover make sure to comment below and I would be happy to answer.

    Good stuff! Before dismantling need to record the connection position not to lose the shaft balance.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  4 года назад +3

      That would be if you are disassembling the shaft from where the slip joint would be. The shaft is balanced as it's own unit and not with the rest of the drivetrain so it can be installed in any position on the vehicle side yokes.

    The reason the strap bolts strip easy is because you are using the wrong size. It's a 5/16″ SAE bolt, and not 8mm.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  4 года назад +2

      They are very close in size but to be accurate 5/16 would be 2 thousands of in inch smaller thean a 8mm. Who knows that may help with stripping issues.

    • @Reekor
      @Reekor 4 года назад +2

      @@OutJeeping True, but depending on the bolt there might be more forces at play. The bolt can lose material due to rust and make the 2 thousands of in inch smaller size matter that much more. Give the 5/16 a try next time you'll feel the difference.

    @13:10 NEVER use a ball peen hammer to hammer on the caps. You can warp the caps & even possibly break them. The "ball" puts excessive force in a very small spot. It's always best to use a flat-faced hammer.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  2 года назад

      I am aware of the possible damage that can be done. Usually pounding in new U-joints doesn't take a whole lot of force. Using an old socket would have been a better choice.

      It's honestly not that big of a deal on brand new joints since the bearings aren't wearing into anything yet. It can be more of an issue with a used but still good joint, that has been disassembled.
