It's great to watch mechanics that aren't afraid to show some of their problems and/or mistakes. A great learning experience for those of us that haven't done this job before. Thanks! Great Job!

    A few pointers, if I may -
The term you are looking for in keeping a drive shaft lined up is 'balanced', sometimes called 'in phase'.
The straps - AKA the piece of metal that the two bolts go through - are not expected to take any form of driveline load. Their sole job is to thrust the cap into the yoke; and ensure the yoke takes the torque.
Often soaking the retaining clips in penetrant makes them come out much easier; especially if you live in rust prone areas.
Depending on the construction of the shaft, ie cast iron, you can hit on the yokes below the ujoint with a good hammer, IF you are confident enough in your aim to not miss.
When installing new joints, I have found that dabbing extra grease into the caps on top of the factory supplied grease aids the needles in resisting falling down.
When whacking a socket, hold it with a vice grip. That way if you miss, or if the socket fails/hammer chips, the vice grip takes it, not your fingers.
I find doing one cap at a time is a lot easier, less risk of dropped needles.
When your caps on one axis - ie, two opposing caps - are in, using a SMALL ball peen hammer, say half pounder, directly below the cap on each trunnion will help center the caps and joint. This is particularly useful if the joint is stiff or tight; giving a couple of firm whacks with a ball peen on each trunnion will very often loosen and center the shaft. While we are at it with the half pounder, I find installing caps with the smaller half pounder generally works most of the time; insolong as excessive force is not applied.
Im not a huge fan of using vices over 'swing press' aka hammer - its very easy to overtorque with a vice and crush a yoke (bend) in on itself making alignment difficult if not outright impossible.
On some joings the orientation of the zirc matters greatly; in the wrong way and youll bind/snap off the zerc.
Just a few things ive learned over the years, might be of some help to ya. Happy jeeping!

This video was well done and informative. I picked up an Arbor Press years ago, specifically for installing U-Joints. After watching you paint your driveshaft, I had to do the same thing on my 97 TJ!

Thank you for making this video. This really helped me out and gave me confidence to tackle this project. I used a large C clamp for that last step. So I have a 2004 TJ that started squeaking bad only when in reverse. Doesn’t squeak when moving backwards in neutral, so not brake related. Besides I just did entire brake job about a month ago. Boy were these yokes and needle bearings bad seals must have been shot for some time. Putting it back together tomorrow so we’ll see if that fixed the problem.

    • @kell9996
      @kell9996 2 года назад +1

Forgot to follow up, but yes this fixed the problem for me, no more squeaking. I should probably get around to replacing the front drivetrain set as well. Right now in middle of replacing O2 sensors due to a check engine light due to p0161 fault code 😂. When it rains it pours. Becoming quite the mechanic with the help of your vids.

nice vid, doing mine on jeep jku tomorrow. seems like it may save time & keep needle bearings from slopping out if you mount & simultaneously press (hammer) both the bottom and top end caps at the same time, ie when you drive the top cap down already have the bottom cap in place so you can drive them both in at the same time & keep needle bearings aligned

Nicely done video! If you run into u-joints that just won't come out. Use a propane torch to heat up the metal surrounding (5 minutes or so) where the u joint cap is. Then, whack the largest and thickest part of the metal at an angle nearest the drive shaft with a sledge hammer (4 or 5 lb). Not too hard cuz you don;t want to damage the area surrounding the u joint cap. 3 or 4 whacks and the cap will pop right up out of the driveshaft. You can then use pliers or vice grips to extract the cap if need be.

Great video as usual! I would like to point out that not all YJs use two 1310 u-joints on the rear driveshaft. Some have pinion yoke that is wider (3-5/8 inches) than the u-joint at the transfer case (3-7/32 inches). In my case, I used a 1310 on the front yolk and a 1330 on the rear yolk.

Awesome video. I know this question does not pertain to this video, but you seem to show the best DIY for Jeeps. I wish you would do a video on how to completely R&R both the side windows with weather-strips and the rear lift window with weather-strip. I am planning on repainting my 1991 Jeep YJ hardtop and want it to look OEM. Thanks a bunch for all your great videos.

I would like to see a show that is all about the different U joints on the 98 to 2004 Rubicon dana 44 driveshaft cardan CV joint and those u joints that are Longer then other u-joints. example top of cap to top of cap on the Rubicon u joint is 3 3/4 long and the others are 3 1/4 top of cap to top of cap

Thanks for all the info you share. My question is, my rear u joint moves a little, but it looks like its tapping back and forth a fraction against the little tab where the cap slides up to. Is that reason to replace the u joint ?

Hey man so this is completely unrelated to your video but I have some questions about my Jeep and I was just wondering if there was anyway I could get ahold of you, I rebuilt my Jeep and it ran great and I went to trailer it out today to go do the brake in and it’s almost running like there is a timing issue, I know that the tjs timing is ran by the ecm but I was just wondering if you could give me an idea on what to do. By the way your videos are great, your the whole reason I took on this challenge. Keep doing what your doing.

Just for some pointers in the comments. Your transfer case fluid is low
AW4/NP241 uses dextron mercon III 87-00xj and 87-96 Toyota 4Runner
For 1996 and up xj ATF+4 can be used but play it safe and use dextron merc
AX15 GL-3 75w90 but GL5 is much more effective and environmentally friendly. (In my experience)
