    My biggest cause of anxiety is definitely thinking I’m annoying other drivers such as not entering the roundabout at the right time or slowing down too early for a turn. It also doesn’t help when even going at an appropriate speed and occasionally drivers behind me still tailgate, which makes me super anxious. I’m turning 30 this year and only just stared learning to drive and things are going well but I still feel nauseous behind the wheel.

      100%, my anxiety is all about what other people are doing and if I'm annoying them by not being quick enough to do things

      Think of it as you're helping to remind them of proper manouvering procedures, a vast majority of "experienced" drivers just totally ingnore the highway code up until such time as someone does something to inconvenence them.
      If the DVLA started giving out heavy fines for not sticking to the speed limit, they'd make enough money to have the best road infrustructure possible.

      What I learned in driving is that your actions should not be based on what other road users do or think about you. Honestly, why are you so worried what other people think of you ie overtaking or beeping at you. What you need to do is try your best to drive as safe as you can and mistakes are inevitable it will happen but learn from your mistakes and don’t care what other think about you, as long as your driving safely and calmly your doing the right thing regardless of what people think or do. Just be calm and vigilant while driving.

      Ha I’m in the exact same boat. It’s what other drivers think, do - makes me anxious.

      I generally relate to this ! B4 I started driving, use to be anxious behind the wheels! When I was learning with manual, the anxiety stopped when I switched to automatic.

    For years I've been terrified of learning to drive and the thought of taking my driving test I would get heart palpitations even thinking about it 🙊 Last year I pushed myself to start taking lessons and on Monday I took my first test but failed - I got 1 minor fault for touching the kerb when parking and my 1 serious fault was for going through an Amber light and I thought that was very harsh to fail me for 😔 but even though I failed I'm so proud of myself for getting through the anxiety and actually taking the test. Hopefully the next one will be a pass 🤞🏻

    what makes me anxious is making mistakes, obviously everyone makes mistakes and mistakes help us learn but i think there's a lot of pressure to pass from friends and family and not everyone learns the same way either. my sister had an instructor that would tell her off when she did something wrong (treating her like a child) rather than explaining the reason why what she did was wrong and telling her how to do it in the future.

    • @tutsecret499
      @tutsecret499 2 года назад

      You are your own enemy, don't let anxiety, fear or whatever they call to control you. Trick yourself, think about all the benefits the car will give to you. Test yourself. You just need to have a hang of it. Get a professional driver that handle nervous driver to learn. Don't let the fear dominates you. I know it's easy to say, but start small, gradually conquering your confidence, comfort zone, and eventually you will be an expert pilot. Another thing, if you don't like the instructor, change, even if you have to change 10 times. You need an instructor that persuades you that makes you feel comfortable. If you make a terrible mistake, he has his breaks under his feet. Now learning those roundabouts is a killer. LOL.

    The shoes/clothing section was actually so useful!! I wear my converse whenever I drive because they are completely flat and make me feel that when I push the pedals, I am properly pushing down on them rather than having grips or bumps in the way

    Got my test in two weeks and I have had a few bad lessons since booking it making stupid mistakes. Really knocks my confidence but theses videos are really great. Edit .... passed today no minors 🥳🥳 best advice is not to concentrate on if your going to pass but to just try stay calm and think what will be will be and the if I don’t pass I will the next time and if I do then 🥳🥳

    One of the things that make someone nervous about an upcoming driving test is that everyone is expecting to pass (family members) and they have no room for failure pretty much. That’s why your driving test shouldn’t be talked about and no one should know about it.

      I agree lots of pressure on people. I have anxiety normally so anything new is daunting. The way I look at the test is to see it like another lesson, you have to be safe whether on a lesson on a test or driving after on your own. I am trying to see it as measuring how safe someone is. I am nowhere near test standard, I have anxiety on lessons, but so much into driving I start to relax, the more I do it the better I feel. I am going to try to see if I treat it if the instructor isnt there and I have to do all these things by myself. Sometimes I forget obvious things as I feel pressured, but my instructor has been great he just said to keep calm and dont rush things, I think if I look forward to it and imagine I am driving by myself (which I will have to do anyway) it will feel better, its so great to have patient friendly instructor. Its hard with anxiety as you look too much ahead and forget avout the moment and what you should do. You tend to put lots of pressure on yourself to do everything perfect then forget things.

    Choosing who you tell is something I learned the hard way. Myself and a friend were both taking our tests at similar times and continually checked in on each other's progress. Even though this was seemingly benign, it added hidden pressure which culminated in us both failing first time. I was also dealing with a lot of anxiety around my driving because I had a very harsh, impatient and bad-tempered instructor as well as people telling me that I would never pass my test with my anxiety (despite never having been in a car with me!). I passed second time with 3 minors, however, but between my first and second test talked very little about my driving and kept my cards close to my chest.

    I suffer with anxiety on a daily basis, when trying to learn how to drive it’s like I go into panic mode! The problem I have is getting the car into gear and setting off. I have been told so many times if you practice more the feeling will go away but when I want to try and hype myself up to do it it’s like my brain shuts down and the anxiety and worry takes over which stops me from being able to get going. It’s really frustrating. I’m also worried if I stall on a major/busy road and causing a crash or just crashing in general.

    I had a horrible 1st instructor who almost made me to give up driving. He yells shouts and make negative comments. He made me to feel that I have anxiety. He pushed me to feel like that so much so everyday after lessons I kept reading symptoms of anxiety. I was stuck with this instructor as I had piads for 10 hour lessons. Every lessons felt like I’m going to be slaughtered.
    Later found a new instructor who was amazing. He was very happy with my driving. He is very positive and end of my 2 hour lessons I hardly felt tired or anxiety.
    I wasted my time blaming my self and putting me self low due to a horrible instructor.
    Your video reassured me that I did the right thing..

    OMG. When I was in England, those roundabouts, driving on the left side was confusing to me. It's the unfamiliar thing that scares us. Just need to get familiar. I don't like to drive with unfamiliar circumstances. Even driving somebody else car is strange. I was in Cornwall, in Plymouth area, OMG, one single road, and my boyfriend not driving slow, what if another car showed up, a lot curves where you cant see the ongoing car. omg, scaring.

    I had that problem postponed for many years not learn driving due to fear, despites I had money to buy brandnew car. But one day out of the blue I decided on my own to hire a private instructor for some classes, and then I would continue the practice with my husband. You get tired of taking bus everyday, seeing obnoxious same people, mental people, dangerous people everyday inside the bus, I got tired of many years taking the bus. Seek for a professional instructor that handles super nervous student. Do the test, get the permit and start practicing, practice, practice, practice, do the test, and after you get the license, and drive with one person with you. Some people keep somebody on the side, for short time, or for several years. It's OK, at least your are driving. I am in USA, and I chose to learn the shift stick which is more to learn. If automatic, it's easier. My fear of not learning driving was not lack of confidence on me, it was fear of other drivers to hit me. Choose quite places, easier traffic. I started practicing 5:00, 6:00am. Just do it gradually. It's just like swimming, if you feel fear, you get stiff, and you drown. Nowadays I am so glad I drive, now I can choose to drive, take the bus, walk, or ride my bicycle. Currently in USA in NY, LA, Chigaco is being very dangerous to use subways, buses. People being killled, raped, homeless, mental living inside the subways. See the news. You vote on these mayors and crime is just going up. Just fire these wrong mayors.

    It's more difficult to learn driving in England. OMG, those hills, the manual transmission, the narrow road. It's cruel driving in England. I learned manual transmission, but never mastered hills. When I went to San Francisco a place with hell hills, I was avoiding all the hills, seriously, I called somebody and asked where to stay where there was no hills, I was even avoiding hotels with garage that had those ramps. It's was hillarious my hills avoidance. Even with automatic car, the hills are scaring, I see those cars parked in vertical position on the hills, humm, not for me, I don't like hills, I don't trust them, I don't even ride bicycles on hills. Hell no.

    I've just started learning left turns recently in my lessons and my instructor has noticed that I tend to tense up my shoulders and stall whenever I stop behind the line but then he tells me to go straight away. At this moment, I panic as I try to start driving again but then I end up doing something wrong... like not releasing the clutch smoothly enough or just looking too much to the right and not looking at the left enough.
    The shoe part was honestly REALLY relatable for me though. I found that certain shoes made it really difficult for me to be able to find my 'biting point' as they just kept getting stuck on the ground. But now that I have better shoes, it's really been helping!

    Thank you so much for filming this. People don’t realise how anxiety provoking driving can be and what doesn’t help the situation is having an instructor who doesn’t understand or isn’t willing to educate themselves on mental health in general. I suffer from severe anxiety and I always feel a huge sense of dread before lessons. It’s not the driving itself (although I do worry about people behind me) I just hate lessons. I find them draining and I always feel like I’m doing everything wrong. I find lessons tiring because my anxiety makes me worry about everything, which often tires me out already. Plus pressure from parents telling me that I have to learn how to drive. Doesn’t help at all

    I've been unsuccessful for the 6th time now in my test. I don't like to say fail because the only failure is giving up! I do have anxiety generally so its quite difficult for me even more so in the car but last weeks test I was sooo gutted, was so calm and only "failed" because the examiner said I only looked back once out of my rear window when doing a parallel park. I know I looked back and around several times but each time I've done the test and been unsuccessful it's put me down even more. I know I can do it but its causing the anxiety to become worse when on the test.🤨 feel quite deflated if I'm honest

      You have to make sure that the instructor is seeing you turned your head to check the sides. Many students here n USA fail with this silly thing. Also change the place where you do the test. Drive there in the area of the somedays before you do the test to get familiar. Everything is practice, practice, test, test, discipline before you do the real test. Even after you get your licence, you start a new challenge journey to be a mature, experienced driver.

    Nervous drivers try this, if you have just passed and still anxious, wake up early on Sunday Morning, set a destination on your GPS e.g petrol station, shopping centre, a car park somewhere, work and then go. Sundays are very quiet driving days and busy traffic on Sunday doesn't usually start until late morning possibly 10am in most parts of the country (UK). Chances are the roads are very empty, so you can catch yourself making mistakes and correcting them without worrying about too much about whos watching you, good thing is you have the roads to yourself with just the odd one or two cars.
    Repeat as much as you can till your brain gets used to the roads, patterns, e.t.c, chances are, you wont realise how long you have been on the road when heavy traffic starts and you realise you are not even scared anymore.

    My problem was passing the theory test with a 100% pass rate but still not understanding everything like all the over road markings, rules, signs etc etc. I think you are cheating yourself if you memorise all the questions and answers as apposed to fully understanding them. So on my practical lessons i would get nervous when i would come across something that I didnt fully 100% understand, then you would look back at your lesson and all you could recall was getting nervous and panicking and making mistakes. leading you to dread the next lesson. You can watch a episode of who wants to be a millionaire and memorise all the answers but that doesnt make you knowledgeable.

    What would really calm my driving anxiety would be that people stop getting too close behind me when I’m driving slow for a reason (ie. bad weather, unstable road surface, traffic calming etc.) it really makes me anxious that they’re gonna go into the back of me if I have to stop suddenly, if anything they should be further back so they can see what I can, in fact we have had that storm recently and of course trees have lost branches and I wasn’t really fancying ruining my wheels, got followed all the way back to where I live because I was driving too slow really felt so confident after that

    Nice video again! My biggest fear is that others will not allow me to change lanes, and because of this, I will not be able to drive in the direction I want to go. The other thing I'm also afraid of is what my passengers or other drivers will say or think if I do something wrong. Because of this, I don't drive often. I don't want to put others at risk because of my fears.

    i passed my driving test 1 week ago and im so scared to drive on my own. im 17 and i just got a car and have been driving it for 2 days now. for the past 2 days i’ve been driving it i’ve been driving it with my family and i’ve been driving perfect, no stalls, no holding people up nothing at all. since i need to drive myself to school and back my mum told me to go for a small drive on my own and see how i get on.
    i drove to school and parked up somewhere and i did fine. it was what happened after that made me lose all confidence and hope. i tried to do a 3 point turn to avoid the road ahead ( as the road ahead is tight and has meeting situations ) and while doing the 3 point turn 2 cars arrive, one from each side. this caused me to panic as i was now holding people up and i stalled 3 times. as the road was uphill i lost all control and my mind went blank. one of the drivers who i was holding up also gave me this look as he drove past and shook his head at me and this made me even worse. i felt like earth should just open up and swallow me whole. this made my anxiety shoot through the roof and caused me to drive home shaking.
    to make things worse, once i had completed the 3 point turn, i was now turning left onto the main road and when turning left i saw an opportunity and stalled again. when i stalled i was now half way through the road and had to quickly reverse to make sure i was not obstructing oncoming cars which i luckily managed. after this tragic event today my confidence has dropped significantly and i now feel like i never want to drive again.

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool because a strong sun can reduce your vision of oncoming traffic that is in the shadow of buildings or trees. The same if sunlight is in your rear or side view mirrors and a vehicle especially a biker is overtaking you. Research carried out in multiple countries esp N. European has proven that daytime lights saves lives.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад

      Ann’s car has daylight running lights (DRLs) on at all times, so should make it visible in the conditions you mention. Since DRLs are only at the front of the car we would recommend using dipped headlamps (as they turn on the cars rear side lights) in rain, fog or any other time of reduced visibility.

    • @Seanmcdhuibhne
      @Seanmcdhuibhne 4 года назад

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool I've been using my dipped lights at all times for over 30yrs, well before we had. DRL's. On a bright sunny day count the amount of vehicles have their rear lights switched on. I'd say less than 5%. On a bright sunny day with perfect visibility put two cars in the shadow of a building, one with lights on the other without. Notice the difference in the visibility of both.
