- If you're into PlayStation 2 emulation, the size of the game files means that storage space on your system will always be at a premium. If your games are in .iso or bin & cue format, you can save a LOT of space by converting them to the compressed .chd format.
We'll walk through the process of converting your ISO or BIN & CUE format PS2 games to the compressed .chd format using the CHDMAN software, including the time saving batch conversion option.

You shoud really make more videos, you're the best honestly. Other RUclipsrs just talk to much and suck at explaining what's going on. Short and to the point! Just earned a subscriber !
If it's not easy to move all of your games into the CHDMAN folder, you can just move the .exe and the .bat file to wherever your .ISOs are. Edit the .bat file as instructed in this video, but create a new line at the top and add "pushd %~dp0" without the quotes. Save it and run it and any .ISO in this folder will be converted.
Oh my god, I was about to compress my games one by one, which would have taken a lot of time if I hadn't watched this tutorial. Thank you!
Thanks, my dude. You explained it to where I actually understood it😄
You’re more than welcome! Glad you found the video helpful!
thank u for this video i didnt think iso could be compressed to chd ur a life saver went from 45gb on 12 games to 28gb lol
Excellent guide, no time wasting at all, thank you!
Awesome tutorial! Straight and to the point! Very helpful! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for this guide. I was finally able to get the game I wanted to play running on my 3ds
You're more than welcome, glad you found the video helpful! Have fun! 😊
Hey mate,
it does not work.
Plz help!:((
chd man opens for a sec then closes automatic. so sad :(
Ong wtf bruh I’m so tired of trying this
Well, apparently it doesn't work anymore, because I've tried with some Redump bin and cue files, and they don't work at all.
Update: Okay. It didn't work because I modified the file name, like taking out the "(USA)" tag out of the file name like I did. If you're gonna use CHDMAN, make sure that THE FILE NAME IS UNMODIFIED. In fact, make sure that the original file is unmodified.
Super late reply (apologies), but thanks for sharing that info, very helpful!
Yeah to add onto this... Open up the .cue file. Whatever the NAME of the .cue is, make POSITIVELY sure that the .BIN and .CUE are the SAME FILE NAME as what is read in the .cue file! Afterwords it works like a champ!
@@m.3.3.w Yes! Good call!
Thank you for this tutorial, just starting emulating with xbox series s and have used this and the gamecube vid to save up valuable space on my thumbdrive
Thanks for the demo and tip, have a great day
You’re more than welcome! 🙂
Many thanks, been doing these on the Steam Deck but this should work much faster!
You’re very welcome, glad you found the video helpful! 🙂
most excellent my man, many thanks.
You’re more than welcome! 😊
Thanks for the video. Worked Great!!
Cheers for the tutorial, nice and simple.
1:15... Thanks... your link is dead but i just needed the bat file just changed the one from the chd to cue edition... working great saving alot of space... thanks again...
I don't really understand how this is supposed to save space. You convert the files but end up having to delete the large rom file you just converted which will eat up storage space in the long run. Am I missing something or a crucial step?
@@HeavensToMergatroid88 after you convert the files, the files are significantly smaller in the CHD format. so you no longer need any other files. delete all but the chd files and you will see a nice bit of savings (more so if you have a large collection)
Went to chdman link but it says "This item is no longer available."
Thank you for this video!
dude, thanks! you really helped!
link is broken
quick and easy best vid ty
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
you didn't show expemple for bin&cue
I tried on many different pc and i properly added the iso in the command line but it do not work for iso and only for cue. I even tried to remove every extension and replace the cue to iso to focus on this extension but when launching the bat file the window pop up and closing instantly. Bbut works well for cue.
That’s strange, it sounds like the bat file isn’t saving the changes you’re making when you’re adding the .iso file type. Try reopening it once you’ve done editing the file to make sure it saved properly. Hopefully that helps!
Yes its well saved. Every time i save the changes they save properly , its not the problem for sure. I really dont understand why its not working. I tried to add the iso extension like you did and i even tried to remove the gdi and cue and only leave the iso extension and still not working. And i tried many ps2 iso to be sure but always fail...
Hmm.. That really doesn't make any sense, it sounds like you've got everything set up right then. I'll have to try and look into this and see if it's a known issue.
Same thing happening for me, just opens and closes.
I think i realised that im trrying to get CHD file into iso. but i think this video is to get que and bin into CHD
Awesome thanks you very much 👍
Thanks kindly for that!
thanks a lot, i love you man
The link is no longer valid.
Thank you so much!
What if I wanna do the reverse? What if I wanna turn CHD files back into ISOs?
Yeah I’ve been wondering the same thing and I can’t find any solutions yet if you found it can you share with me
if we wanted to convert them back to ISO from CHD what would the command be for that?
So im confused also, i used a fresh converted ISO from disk and it can play in PCSX2 jsut fine but if i convert it to CHD then extract it back to bin/cue it still works just fine in PCXS2 but if i then convert the bin/cue back into iso the size is different from the original ISO and it wont launch in program, so what is proper command using chdman to get bin/cue back into original iso format. here is the one i used below.
for /r %%i in (*.cue, *gdi, *.iso) do chdman createcd -i "%%i" -o "%%~ni.iso"
All I’ve been able to find about decompressing a chd to iso leads me to the command you’re using, so I’d have to do a bit more research to see why it’s not working, though you should still have the original iso file you started with, so I’m not sure why you wouldn’t use that?
@@HalfCircleForward Hey there, thanks for the reply, i actually found out alot. So there is no way to convert it to a iso using chdman, it can but the ISO will be unreadable so u have to use a seperate program which i found and made a batch file to use that program to convert all my bins to isos and all work so all good here.
@@Slider-Man Okay, awesome! Glad you were able to get it all sorted out! 👍
@@Slider-Man what should I type in cmd to restore it to ISO? I don't understand
@@GAMING10years its somewhere on discord where i posted what i did, have to download a program called AnytoISO i believe was the main thing then i tweaked a command to use that program and it worked.
How do i run chd file in pcsx2 emulator ??
Sadly the download link from the internet archive doesn't work anymore, as it says "This item is no longer available."
awesome video bro !!! one question though, is it posible to do this for ps1 games ??? is duckstation recognize chd format file ???
The link to the archive site says the file no longer exists.
Question if you don't mind; does the CHD format affect performance of the game? or will require more from your PC to run it as ISO would normally be?
That’s a great question! No, you’ll see no discernible difference between running an ISO or a CHD. I have been running CHD files for a long time now, and so far no issues to report. Hope that helps!
@@HalfCircleForward Awesome to hear! Thank you :)
Short sweet and to the point we need more emulation tutorials like this instead of talking and talking and talking and like 2 minutes of it being done in a 30 minute video,,,, videos like this are ones I love,,
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! Have fun!
There's only the chd to cue...not cue or gdi to chd......I just understood with the edit😂...thanks
Legend!!!
idk if there was any update or anything but everytime i download chdman the ´´.bat´´ disapears when i take it out of the zip and then it doesnt work
any solutions ?
That's definitely not right! I just re-downloaded the files and was able to copy both files over to my desktop without any issues. Are you getting any errors when extracting the files?
I Olny See At The Starting Is "nan% complete". How Can I Fix It?
exactly what i was looking for.
I DONT HAVE A FOLDER JUST THE EXE
hey i m very curious what about extra BAT or GZ file for it does work ? let me know ok
reverting them all back to iso so i can play them on my ps2 xD
Thanks. Thought I would have to convert isos to other formats before chd. Any idea why we have to edit the batch file instead of it including the iso format by default?
It was just the way that the batch file was originally built. Not sure why they wouldn’t have included .iso in there, to be honest.
Ty mAh man
You’re very welcome! 🙂
thanks but the game runs slow at only 5 fps that's even in the game menu. how to revert to iso?
What about files that are 6GB+ what do you recommend for those? The CHD file works for most games but i have a few that are 6+
Hi there your guide has been really helpful, and I appreciate it a lot, but when I double click the cue, it opens, but it stays blank and nothing happens. What can I do?
Okay, something's definitely not right there! Does the screen just open and then close immediately or does it hang on the blank screen?
@@HalfCircleForwardI’m having same issue black screen opens and closes immediatle
Sadly doesn't seem to work for Dreamcast games, RetroArch will no longer load them.
Great tutorial! I hope this works with my Japanese NiGHTS into dreams iso, it always boots up to the red screen of death, even if I use a Japanese BIOS, any help?
btw I got it from vimms lair
Perfect thanks. I did have "F1 2002.cue : file not found" ...not sure if there's a problem with that file name?
use notepad to open the cue, check the bin filename is it as same as how it wrote in the cue. if not then rename your bin.
even if it's a bin file you have to write "iso?
can it be down for psx too?
or could i be possible to use psx gamed CHD format on the ps2 emulator
Thank you if anyone knows what roms megathread is it extremely helped me
Just got into emulating, I'm confused on if you add "*.bin" to the edit as I'm not using ISO files. Would like advice regarding that as I've read that cue files don't really mean much and the bin is what should be focused on.
You have no need for the cue file. It's just a metadata which would tell the Playstation when to play certain audio tracks. the emulator doesnt need it. so you can convert into .chd files with no worries!
@@risachu8580 But what about the .bin? I did the conversion, it didn't convert my .bins (three for FFVII), only the .cues.
@@tovahwulf that's weird. It should detect the bin files automatically.
link is dead
PLEASE HELP: the program I use to convert the games closes immediately and I can't find a solution
Okay, let’s see if we can figure this out for you. When you’re launching chdman, you’re double clicking on the .bat file as opposed to the .exe file to run it, correct?
@@HalfCircleForward yes correct
@@lcb2884 Okay, great! What format are the games in that you’re trying to convert? Iso or bin & cue? If you’re using bin & cue, try opening the .cue file in WordPad and check the file names to make sure there’s no special characters, and rename them if needed.
@@HalfCircleForward I use cue. I'm trying to convert Rayman for the PSX
@@lcb2884 Okay, and you’re moving both the .bin and .cue files for the game over to the chdman folder?
ask. Can I use the data to put it on an HDD and play it on a PS2?
What extension files does it support besides ISO?
i cant run chdman, how you fix it
I presume Ill still need the .cue files, or are they embebbed into the .chd file along with the bin? What about games with multiple discs?
I’m pretty sure for games with multiple discs, you convert every disc the game has into a .chd file
@@Slymi69 yeah, its just that we always see bin files coupled with cue files, even when we download games that are stored in a single disc. As for iso files, I never saw one with cue or m3u files when dowloading games.
The way I would probably go about it is: convert the isos, bins, imgs etc to chd, but generate m3u files anyways, if only to point the emulator to the m3u files and avoid those double listings in retroarch, like when we scan a folder with bin and cues.
CHDMAN was taking down can you reupload it?
Using Ubuntu 22.04 here. Any idea on how to do this?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
can this be done on 2 disc game?
thanks , why not just put the iso command to begin with ....
I didn’t create the original file, hence the edit, but you’re right, it would have made sense to add it when it was originally created.
Where can i find the iso files of games
My window quickly opens and closes . I didnt see a solution in the chat. Any ideas how to fix ? Thanks
same for me.. any solution?
Does not work in Windows 11
does this work for gamecube?
One thing I want to know is, how do you run chd files in PCSX2? There is only an option for running iso files and it doesn't recognize chd at all! Or it results in an error message when I able to select them, so how am I supposed to run files PCSX2 doesn't identify as legit rom files?
If you use RetroAch with the PCSX2 core it will run CHDs.
If you learn how get PCSX2 to play CHDs, please post here.
I recommend NOT using RetroArch for PS2 emulation. I would use the standalone. In order for PCSX2 to recognize chd files, you need to download the most recent dev build of PCSX2. You most likely have the most recent stable version right now
@@askjeeves1637 Also, there are four different versions of the latest build, but I can't tell which is which.
@@Cyberbrickmaster1986 AVX2 is newer than SSE4.1, so I'd go with AVX2 Qt. Ultimately it depends on the specs of your PC
This is excellent information, thanks for taking the time to share!
thanks but umm what link? i cant find it
no esta .iso dentro del bat
sorry i found it
do CHD files work on ps3
I am wondering the same thing. I have a backwards compatible PS3 on the way and I need to know if I should keep the iso files around. :\
@@KouryuTube I’ll check today
what if the game includes track files? I'm converting Dreamcast .gdi to .chd and I cannot figure out how to batch convert with track files. Any suggestions?
Dead link dude no way to fined these files.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😁😂
2023 does not work!!!!!😢
dudes this is wrong t needs to look like this (*.cue, *.gdi, *.iso) he left out the ,
Looks like the comma is in there, unless I’m missing something?
check out namDHC for best iso to chd conversion and better GUI BUT i use 7zip with best settings i was able to get much more less to 7zip the .iso than .chd.
