Retroarch really is turning out to become the one stop shop for emulation. And I'm all for it.
It pretty much has been for many years, but I agree.
Usually the standalone emulators are better for anything newer than dreamcast.
@@shatterpointgames I know but I was saying it already was a “one stop shop” I wasn’t saying that it’s the best for every system.
@@ur_wrong1209 I would argue it's the "shop" with the most variety. But it's not really one stop imo. I wish it was and I use it for any emulator I think it handles well but unfortunately there's a lot it doesn't so I find myself "stopping" at other "shops".
@@ur_wrong1209 I think that prevents it from truly taking over is the UI is a bit clunky for non technical people. Hell I am atech person and I've said to myself ehhh I'll fix it later or I'll optimize it later because it isn't exactly intuitive for quick changes.
For people who immediately experiences crashing when starting a ps2 game change your retroarch video driver to d3d11. I always set mine to vulkan for other emulators and it isn't supported hence the crashes. I've set it to d3d11 and everything works great now. If you find changing video drivers just to play ps2 bothersome you can always set d3d11 on the pcsx2 options in retroarch so it automatically set to d3d11 the next time you run a ps2 game. After that then you can just revert your video drivers back to vulkan or etc.

Update guys: I finally got it to work!!!!! When you move your PCSX2 files into your RetroArch system directory, DO NOT I repeat DO NOT move the PCSX2.exe file into the RetroArch system folder with the rest of the PCSX2 files. This will work trust me. Now RetroArch launches smoothly without any problems!!
I've done everything you explained in this video step by step. I've downloaded PCSX2 2, loaded the bios files in PCSX2, dragged the PCSX2 folder to the RetroArch system folder, downloaded the PCSX2 core in RetroArch, etc and PCSX2 will not load in RetroArch. What happens is, when I hit start core RetroArch loads with a white screen and closes immediately. I've even tried different video drivers glcore, d3d11, etc. It won't work!! What am I doing wrong? My bios files are in the correct folder as well.
Where did you move your PCSX2.exe file to then? Still didnt fix it for me. I get "Failed to load content"

This core has progressed a LONG way since the making of this video. Games that I used to get sub 30fps with graphical glitches, now run almost perfectly. Half-Life for example, stuttered crazy in the pre-release core. I just finished playing up too the surface levels and I've hadn't a single frame drop or error that wasn't in the original game. You should really make another video.
This really helped me out. I had previously downloaded the core expecting the same magic as 16 bit consoles, but the extra steps you included helped immensely.

Through this vid, I just learned that you can drag and drop downloads directly from the dialog in Chrome. I've previously been opening the file location and moving it that way. Thanks for a great tip!

VEry limited in my opinion, go 7:32 see thats a fraction of settings u can do in PCSX2, not nearly enough to ensure every game u want to play will play.
@@everx7 You stilll have the option to make changes to the settings in the pcsx2 config from the emulator in the system folder of RetroArch.Additional game settings can be mapped and saved there.
I don't know what video output most people are using when running this through RetroArch but I am using glcore. Content will crash if you try to run this through vulkan. I run pretty much everything through vulkan but for PS2 games it has to be something like glcore.
Does anyone have a preferred video output for this core?

@@Richie016 Thats what i suspected, but then whats the point ?? If u still need to fix it in the original emu. Thats hwy i like beetle hw core for ps1 u set up everything there and u good to go. If something is wrong u just f1 and adjust. Simple. This aint so far. but itll get there eventually. I really hope so
Very helpful for couch gaming. Retroarch has a controller friendly UI, which most standalone emulators like PCSX2 don't have. Its nice to be able to change settings and launch games without needing a mouse and keyboard.
This is great! I've been waiting for this for a long time, now I can play my PS2 games on my CRT TV with super resolutions!, something that was impossible in PCSX2 due to the aspect ratio, this is really a blessing for us driving CRT TVs with modern GPUs that don't support 240p or 480i.
I wish the PCSX2 core worked on Android devices as well.

i use archlinux and tried a bunch of things!
edit: i fixed it! just create a file in system from retroarch,and put the name pcsx2 ,create another file in pcsx2 named bios and put the bios files !
Hey I’m new to this and apparently retro arch is on iPhone so basically i did that u have said i did it before too but it says failed to load content i did check the files it needed it said present but it just says failed to load content im trying to play godfather the game ps2 game can u help me😊
Playing some of my PS2 titles on PC has brought back some great memories, especially of a time when games were actually finished and put on a disk, no macrotransactions and no day one patches. Only issues I have is the audio in all my games are garbled, when in actual play and my Xbox controller won't stop vibrating unless I press F1 a few times.
A tip for Gran Turismo 4: in the game itself you can change the display output from 480i to 480p (progressive). The emulator will use that appropriately to produce a much, much sharper and cleaner image than the default option that works very well with the upscaling in the plugin.
It's about damn time PS2 came to retro arch. Hopefully this is a foundation to a fully compatible pcsx2 core! Well as compatible as the actual standalone
Given the mess that is the PCSX2 codebase, that's not going to happen for a while. The official announcement post said that this is a hard fork but the goal is definitely making the full project more friendly to things like RetroArch, so it's only a matter of time and coding resources.

That PCSX2 makes a fidgety nightmare include: "hacks" adjusting frames, not adjusting frames, vulka vs opengl vs just about everything, finding gameshark/gamegenie and raw format codes, using cheat codes. And my favorites? Doing just about everything with PCSX2 is a undue clusterfuck of UI and UX. RetroArch itself is also a clusterfuck of a clique to. It's UI and UX is just as much of a clusterfuck as PCSX2. From what I've read the codebas for both retroarch and PCSX2 is a fucking nightmare. lol so I guess the two groups deserve each other.
did everything as you showed but get a "content failed to load" error. games load fine in pcsx2 by itself, but not in retroarch.
edit: i changed to video output to dx11 from vulkan and it worked.

strange, my system can't see the ps2 core. I did exact the same as in the video. I used american BIOS btw 39004. And It was the steam retroarch version

@Brian Babin I'm assuming that's in reference to ps2 emulation on retroarch in particular. They only had an emulator called play! available before that did not work very well at all. So it's really nice to see PCSX2 available now as well.
Hey ETA PRIME, It seems that RetroArch no longer has the PCSX2 core by default, with LRPS2 being in it's place.
Do you know how I would go about adding the PCSX2 core? Otherwise, are you aware of what the bios folder should be labelled as for LRPS2? Thanks for the help!

Me too! I followed the steps but PCSX2 core is replaced by the LRPS2 core and i cant get it to work with that.

So hows performance on games like metal gear solid 3 which requires tweaks on pcsx2 in order to work? Can you create profiles for games? Like on lunchbox with pcsx2 config? I hope so it's implemented or similar because we can use retrosrch with steam remote play

Since no one is answering this. If you cant get the core to work its a simple fix do everything he said in the video then run PCSX2 setup everything as if you was using PSCX2. BIOS selection , Sett up plugins, format you mem cards. Make sure you are good to go as if you was using PCSX2. If the game runs on the standalone you can run the game in retroarch after all the setup.

Cant get ps2 to work. I can use pcsx2 emulator stand alone just fine, but it wont run any game inside retroarch.

The damonps2 is Just garbage, it's the most expensive emulator i've ever seen, the majority of games doesn't run even on a snapdragon 888, and the free version is a bad joke

the latest is just that whats in the video, the daily builds, or dev. builds are v1.7.xxxx but its only for windows 10, i tried it on windows 7 but as i was trying to load a game, all crashed. I mean PCSX2. With v1.6.0 works everything great so far. So use v1.6.0 and if something wont work to ur liking u could always try v1.4.0 or one of many v1.5.xxxx dev builds

@@everx7 Yep, I use 1.6.0 and I tried make it work with RA just like instructed in this video - does not work. I'll pass on this one, not even sure what are benefits of using it, I don't have much problem with few extra clicks on a few emulators I run.
If you are getting a "failed to load content" error, check if you have d3d11 as video driver. Vulkan will make it crash.

they really need to streamline retroarch to work with less setup. some of these cores require soo much work in order to run.
Finally I can record emulated ps2 game footage with ntsc shaders.

Followed your directions to the letter, not working for me. Game launches and I can hear the music but screen is black....
After troubleshooting, I found going into Drivers -> Video and switching to Vulkan fixes everything. There’s a couple articles on libretros website that discuss that in further detail as well. Hope this helps!
everytime I tried to load a game it says failed to load but pcsx2 runs fine and I followed all steps to get it to load in retroarch? Pcsx2 loads all the iso files i have too and starts immediately so Im not sure what could be wrong
It's amazing how much trouble I have getting shit to run smoothly with Retroarch. I literally followed this step by step; getting a failure to load issue.
Ive tried this on RetroArch Steam Ver. but devs deactivatd the Online Updater. Is there a way to somehow play ps2 on that version?

The tutorial is easily understandable and PS2 emulation on RetroArch seems cool. But I'm not a fan of RetroArch I always have problems with it and random crashes. I prefer to stick to standalone emulators like PCSX2.
Seeing as the only games i want to play on the ps2 are games that pcsx2 struggles with, mainly the 2 mgs games and ace combat i dont think this will be useful for me.
Soooo the better solution is soft modding your ps2 to run games off hdd.
Works perfectly and a mod i recommend trying if you still have the hardware.

I keep getting a "Failed to load content" error when I try to start games. Updated my 1.9.0 RA to 1.9.1 and then did your steps. What could that be?
EDIT: Just for everyone with the same problem: Change your Video driver to OpenGL one time if you had Vulkan. Once it started you can set your standard driver under options.
Did you have the proper bios? and the game in the proper format, in this case .iso? All you really need is to download RA, go to online updater > and download core. If you still have issues download and try the other PS2 cores.
@@richardi.2030 I have several BIOS. My original PCSX2 works - I just want to "migrate" everything to RA. I will try removing the other BIOS version for PAL and JP and see if this works. Thank you.
Change from Vulkan to either OpenGL or D3D11, Vulkan doesn't work for PCSX2.

I've played Dark Cloud on my computer (Ryzen 5 1600 + Radeon RX 560 4GB + 32GB DDR4 3000), buttery smooth.
Whelp, I can't get it to run. Just get a "failed to load content" error. Followed the instructions, and my system is an x86 PC fully capable of running any game in PCSX2 standalone.

@@Marco-00 I almost said "already tried that, it's my default" then I remembered that I tried out Vulkan a while back and after updating my cores once Retroarch had switched back for some reason, so I doublechecked... IT was indeed set back to Vulkan. -.- Set it back to d3d11 and it's working. Thank you.
(I used d3d11 as default over Vulkan because I was having issues getting certain MAME2016 games to run when it was set to Vulkan)

Yea I totally noticed those games don't run upscaled- while PS1 games are completely fine.
But as soon as you go into gameplay mission outside of main menu it's stuttering like hell and the sound is just struggeling noise...
But sadly (maybe new version or what ever) there is no "internal Resolution" settiongs existing, and I can't play the game after all
For the love of God, all I want is a good PS2 emulator for Android.
As proton says, until the cpus wont be powerful enough, u wont be able to. I see some chips going around and above 3ghz, but its still only good for some games. Also we mainly need emulator that wont need that much resources as PCSX2 does need to run some games like GT or Champions of Norrath properly (or dark alliance one and two, same game engine)
Those games needs a good system, good PC to run on at least 720p properly. But mobiles arent there yet.
I think theyll will be there, if progress continues, ina few years or so, u might be able to play ps2 games on ur phone properly at least in 720p.
That damon something emu is a joke and play! is well not really great. I compared it on PC (play! vs pcsx2) the same game same res. the game on play run like crap, on pcsx2 i played even a little just so it wanst a fluke, and it ran great. (played it, on purpose on a q6600 system with 3gb ram, and gtx550ti and pcsx2 and with that game was ok, 720p, Play! struggled to get even like 10fps.
Itll get there but i heard that on Android its better, u should try it. If u have beefy phone. Like a Honor 20 Pro :), very nice phone.
@@everx7 its not the ARM CPUs. I have a Poco X3 Pro with Snapdragon 860. It runs some PS2 games using DamonPS2 (shady app with stolen codes from PCSX2) at full 60 fps. The real issue is that there are no real developers working to convert x86 PCXS2 instructions to ARM. BTW, the Adreno 640 GPU in my chip can do about 1 teraflops of floating point calculations, that puts it in the same league as Xbox One, PS4 and Switch in terms of raw processing power.
You can thank the way the PS2 was originally made for how emulation\CPU intensive it is. To quote a emulation wiki: the PS2 CPU contains a multitude of custom sub-components and chips such as the FPU co-processor, 2 Vector Units, IOP, SPU2, Graphics Synthesizer and SIF which together work asynchronously to comprise the 128-bit Emotion Engine. The floating point unit (FPU) doesn’t follow the IEEE standard. The graphics pipeline acts very differently from modern GPU cards and emulating it in HW mode with any degree of accuracy is difficult. Moreover, the PS2 just like PS1 uses the MIPS architecture instead of standard x86 code, thus making emulation slower.
In short, you need a powerful CPU and ARM chips or the average cellphone aren't that powerful yet.
@@willylim74 i dont doubt it but i think if no devs are working on the problem u mentioned i think the best bet is with faster cpus. GPUs in mobile are i think now quite powerful but cpus are lacking behind. But when they do catch up, it hink ps2 emulation wont be an issue even without that conversion. GL to all of us :).
@@everx7 problem is not the mobile cpus and gpus it's the emulator. For example games that were released on ps2 and game cube. Dolphin emulator runs them smoothly it's a well known fact gamecube was more powerful then the ps2 as was dreamcast compared to the ps1. Mobile chipsets are more then powerful enough to run these childish games.

How much is the difference in terms of emulation settings between the core and the standalone version?
Man no matter what I do I can't get it to go beyond a black screen with sound which is weird because PCSX2 boots and runs completely fine on it's own

Two things I want them to do first: support CHDs since I just converted all of my PS2 games to those and figure out a way to get multi-disc working. Once the latter happens especially, I'm probably gonna start moving my stuff from the standalone.
Multi disc games use RetroArch's Disc Control options

@@JonPYbanez i wanna build 2 or 3 sff running 1050ti n batocera unless win10 and launchbox works better idk but i5 and nvidia always works great but maybe amd works better in windows only
@@joeydelmarsjr.646 I had a 1050ti paired with my build but heat in the case ended up killing it. you should be able to scale to 3x with it. CPU core count doesn't matter too much, the emulator likes clock speed more. good luck with your build, hope playing all those old games brings back happy memories

@@joeydelmarsjr.646 i used a MITX board & flexPSU, remove the shroud from the GPU and was able to fit it all into an old PS2 shell. besides the CPU cooler fan, all it had was one 40mm fan as exhaust
If your game does not load, make sure to use the glcore video driver. Vulkan does not work yet.

i used to use batocera to have one place to play PS1, PS2 & PSP games but i'd rather have a lite linux OS that allows me to do the same thing here without Windows

Seems a bit silly to basically copy everything over, at that point unless you want Retroarch's UI I will stick with the standalone.

so u couldve on pcsx2 way before this was possible, but ok. I did, its a great experience on pcsx2 as well as original. Go for it.
the ps3 remaster is better and in widescreen.
@@tygobermind3640 why >? ICO on pcsx2 is widescreen and better, why ? Personal preference is better, what is better. Better Graphics ?? What is better about it, checked gameplay, theres nothing better. Sorry i dont see it. PCSX2 gameplay of ICO is just as great as i saw on pS3, graphics is the same ish, widescreen ditto. Again sorry i dont see it. One thing is equal for both, that its a great game :).
@@everx7 ps2 is interlaced, you can see the de-interlacing artifacts on pcsx2.
This is awesome dude, i´ve had problems with some games in PCSX2 (bad graphycs and lag mostly) and i want to try in Retroarch and see if problems persist. Thank you for this video man.
