- Husband and wife duo, Karen Ho and To Chan enters the den seeking a £150,000 investment and in return offers 30% of Aqua Sheko Fish Spa. As one of the first fish spas to open in London, the duo has a very clear business strategy in mind, but that doesn't sit well with some of our Dragons.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

What Theo said back at the time , proved right , the market suddenly got congested with those hungry fish tanks and eventually there were lots of concerns about hygiene and the risk of transmitting diseases among people. Just imagine the same fish sucking the dead skin of ill person and then carry this bacteria out to someone healthy . Then the business disappeared.
theo said nothing about health concerns.
@@aljabirxiju9475 Mohammed didn't suggest that Theo did. Only that Theo was right in predicting the marketplace would become congested. Mohammed then went on to explain that because of the congested marketplace, concerns about hygiene were raised and that essentially put an end to this trend.
I worked with To from 2018-2020 - He's a very intelligent guy! Shame he didn't get this investment, and I had no idea he was on Dragons Den either!!
Is his business successful?
@@user-yr7nw8iw3t i'd like to know that too 👍
Since this season was well before 2018, I must sadly assume their foot spa business failed :(

would have been an even better business if you were served your fish as sushi after your pedicure session to get your "protein" back.

Cruelty to the fish is the first thing that comes to mind. You want these fish to eat off your dirty feet?! Such a soulless business.
Looks like the dragons got intimidated by their degrees 🤣🤣🤣
I can feel sympathy and genuine sorry from the tone of Peter's rejection.
I know right? Peter Jones could see these guys were the real deal, but in a soon-to-be overcrowded market, which proved prophetic. This market is saturated from everything I hear online.
Really? Because what I saw was him pull out a reserve question which very infrequently gets asked, and then use their answer to declare himself out.

Its a small business with limited scaleability. Im sure they'll live a successful life owning a couple of spas but its not really an investable venture for the dragons
Well I remember a successful hedge fund manager who was saying that he always look for investment with a return of 30% (under 30 the money is better staying in the bank ) and I think it is easily reachable. A dozen of well situated spas can make 1 million a year net and 30% is 300000 a year for an initial investment of 150000 it is a 200% benefit each year .
just goes to show. You make more money if you move to the other side of the world and belong to a different culture ...

You're talking to a culture who would raise the dead if they could smell and extra dollar across the street.

This isn't the last business these two individuals will start. They will definitely find more opportunities and start more businesses.
Just wanted to say that these spas are really bad for the condition of the fish. In nature they feed on algae and bacterial film, so spa owners have to essentially starve them so that they're forced to eat whatever is in their tank. Due to that, the fish tend not to live very long (especially considering the sheer amount of pollutants introduced from someone's feet) as they waste away from not having their required nutrients. Majorly messed up
The fish somewhat enjoy it (I think), why wouldn't they
@@dozermox9785 how on earth can you possibly say that? Are you a fish?
I loved the cafes in Korea that had those fish! But those were basically miniature ponds on the side, while the tea and coffee were the main attraction. Such a little tank does look unhygenic.
I think that was just for the demo. In the pictures on the posterboard, it looks like one long tank for like 30 people.
Ran out of money and closed in 2011. Good call.
one of the better more qualified entrepreneurs on the show, well presented
Wow these guys dodged a bullet with this business. The number of regulations that came into play shortly after these Garra Ruffa fish businesses started doing well were absolutely crazy - there isn't a single developed market where these businesses existed for longer than 12-24 months - there were health hazards, ban on the fish, concerns relating to ethical standards etc. Still a big feature in the emerging markets though!
Interesting!
Yes the usual red tape. Very interesting comment 👍

@Jao Bai Dun Yes but regulations in Europe are a pain in the a.r.s.e .

Didn’t these businesses go to the wall in 2011 & 12, due to hygiene concerns? …..there was an explosion of them opening up in 2010 & 11
I applaud Deborah and her comment. I had the same thought when I watched an episode of Shark Tank.
So unsanitary. The water isn't changed and what if the fish drew blood? Would it be transmittable?
Closest I’ve seen Peter get without investing
You should watch more episodes then
If they had a sushi restaurant with the foot spa, it would do better.
Had this done in thailand the same year this was filmed. Very tickly for the first 5 mins, then the fish get full up. Did i notice any difference? Yes, revitalising feet, and slightly soft feet but the novelty wore off the moment my socks went back on
I recently just started catching up on this show & I was REALLY HOPING for a Dragon to invest. These 2 people are highly investable, I would've. I don't even support pedicure type businesses either. But if I knew these 2 would be in my area, I would go. I loved these people.
I learned from this episode . Dont invest on what can be copied by others . Very true world is full of opportunist crocodiles
I disagree, its all the nitty gritty things that makes the difference. There's no innovations left to grow any kind of business unless you put huge amount of resources in R&D.
That really depends how invested you are in your business. If you are not interested in the subject matter of the business, then it will fail.
Like anybody can start a car mechanic shop, but if you don’t know anything about cars or mechanical engineering, then your business will fail.
So you're telling me you wouldn't have invested in Mcdonalds, Burger King, Asda, KFC, Tesco? They own nothing and can be easily copied.
@@Jaymiecain1 their world famous brand is what they own. They make money by franchising the brand. They have copyright protection for their brand. A mom and pop restaurant without a brand name faces a more uphill climb and will have competitions copy it.
@@Jaymiecain1 If it was me I wouldn't... Because when you get a random burger place pitched to you 50 years ago the chances that it would become "McDonalds" was astronomically small. How many other burger places have shut down since? How many grocery shops never got to become as big as tescos and had to close down too?
A number of states in the USA have banned the fish (Garra Rufa) pedicures, as have Mexico, Canada and many countries across Europe. This is due to high cross-infection rates and cruelty to the fish, as they are starved to make them more effective. In many cases, owners have used a similar but cheaper and more aggressive fish, (Chin-Chin) which have teeth that can draw blood, further raising the dangers of cross-infection.
Inevitably, the substitute fish will also see the same fate as their predecessors!
Just a matter of "when" not "if" before a bill is passed to make it unlawful business practice using this particular fish!
Garra rufa fish, the animals most commonly used in fish pedicures, don’t want to eat your dead skin. They do it because they’re so severely starved that they’ll try to eat human skin for sustenance.
Wasn’t there issue with these fish foot tanks in that people were getting infections off previous users like athletes foot and nail fungus ?
Its gross
Supposedly these fish would not usually eat human skin, however they're starved to the point that they do. Not something I'd ever support.
Any business which relies on animals is one I'm normally quite skeptical of. That being said though, there are rivers in some of the most pristine, untouched parts of South Africa where fish will swim right up to you and nibble on your toes. While it's not their usual diet, they certainly seem very happy to eat dead skin when it's around. I think there are definitely valid environmental concerns around the industry though.

I think what is missing to this program is the possibility of the people to invest if they find the idea interesting even if no dragons are interested . It could be done throughout small shares of 10 €£$. Personally I would like to have easy access by taking very small stakes (under 1000 £) into different businesses I feel they can do well . A sort of official ‘ Tontine ‘ the system used by the Chinese to help somebody to get some cash without any bank in order to open a business . Usually they ask the members of their communauty to invest and when the business starts making money the executive who runs the business buys the shares back with a profit for the investor .

The investment they asking is so small it won’t even cover operations and overheads in a month
it would cover it easily for 2 shops. 3months rent upfront, 3 month deposit. so for a soho venue say 40k to get the keys for somwhere like mayfair 70k. Camden, high end 40k Camden lock market 10k. then its just glass fish tanks and they renovate themselves. probably squeeze in 4 venues in London for that money with my mind and drive for business. I opened a fully operational sunbed shop all in 20k but you need to be prepared to really use your brain and time.
