early Purple had a remarkable cross over of sounds from hard rock, pop and slightly psychedelic. Gillans voice really explodes on this recording. I have always felt that this song wouldnt be out of place in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar (not because of the obvious title but its feel and lyrics) and of course Gillan sang the part of Jesus on the original Superstar album
Deep Purple- amazing band. They were great band back before they made it huge and then there was that disaster with Gillan off the rails on Who Do We Think We Are after he had been great for them and then great again with Coverdale and Hughes- a legendary band- an amazing band. This song sends shivers- brilliant!
If MTV ever aired this one, I'm unaware of it, but I'm pretty sure it was USA Network's "Night Flight" where it made the rounds. It's a fascinating track -- somewhere, Ritchie referred to it as a transitional piece -- and while I know IG and RG snickered about the lyrics, this still IMHO is one of The Jesus's best vocal performances. Pair it with the clip of IG singing "Gethsemane" as a warm-up for an evening with a few beers and the Mark II era.
Interestingly, that episode shows Prince Charles hearing the song while studying Welsh prior to his investiture as Prince of Wales. That happened on 1 July 1969. “Hallelujah” was t released until 25 July 1969.
I first heard this song (Gillan & Glover's debut) back in '93 on the Singles A's & B's cd. It's certainly not hard rock (has that 60's groove to it in the middle of the track) but it's an interesting number. Always great to hear the thoughts of Mr Lord. Cheers for posting.
@@kellyweingart3692It wouldn’t have been a good fit with the rest of the songs on that album though, good a song as it is. It’s too close to the old Mk1 sound. They were wise to leave it off In Rock.
Got to admire Blackmore. His playing in mark1 never resembled anything he did in mark 2. Gillan and Glover show up, they want a harder sound and Blackmore masterfully changes his style. Pro!
The first time I have heard this song, LOVE IT! It reminds me of the early days and the slower pace of their music. I saw them in 84-85 in Indianapolis, IN (Perfect Strangers). After that it seemed like they were rushing through their music, tempo increased etc. It may just be me but I sure like this song and the tempo!
Well, yes, but the 20th century also included the worst disaster (holocaust, armenian genocide, ww1 and ww2, soviet union, communism really in general, and much more) the reason why 21st century is bad is becuase they won't remember the past, leading to idiots that think communism works.
Sad how they sacked Rod Evans and Nick Simper, however if that didn’t happen then the deep purple we know and love for Smoke On The Water won’t happen. Beautiful song, but must’ve sucked to be told by your label that you’re not on the record rather than the band themselves
@gietek Do you mean: The way they fired Rod and Nick? i know you are right, because the statement you make is allways right. i just don´t know exactly what you mean. Or do you mean DP´s music in generel?
deep purple is indeed the best band. they often compared to led zeppelin but that is utter bullshit, when you dig dp's discopraghy from very begininng to end you can see their versatilness, their quality, and every instruments perfectness, uniqueness. zeppelin is great band tho. but it is not unique as dp do, they are just great rock band
Dakika Saniye - You really have to feel for Rod Evans and Nick Sampler. This video was produced when they were still part of the band except that they had brought in a new singer and guitarist without their knowledge
Couldn't disagree more, cause no one can tell this band is the best or that one is the worst.Deep purple and led zeppelin are both great bands in their own way. Deep purple is a hard rock-metal band but led zeppelin was a blues-rock band. There's no competition, just enjoy listening to their brilliant songs.
Rod could never have those amazing screeches that Gillan was known for, though I do wonder what it would sound like if Purple had a prior recording with rod on vocals.
Compare the guitar solo that Blackmore plays here and you will be able to see the main reason why Jimmy Page is simply a better soloist than Blackmore. Every song that Zeppelin ever did had a beginning, middle and end. It told a little story. It was never just a bunch of notes strung together. He crafted the damn things until they were unique and special. I don't Blackmore ever did that. He just threw down whatever came to him at the moment. And even the MOST memorable ones like the one from Highway Star, he never ever played the solo that way again. I've seen 20 versions of the song and every solo was inferior to the record. Come on! At least once there should have been a better one there somewhere. But sadly, Richie just was not that inventive. Very capable guitarist, extremely capable, but not a true composer like Page.
Like you said from the opposite man.. Ritchies solos in no one came, child in time, burn, lay down stay down, gates of Babylon, stargazer are on the divine level, page couldnt produce and structure that kind of solo. As far as playing live.. Ritchie is on another lvl once more
One of the most reta...ed opinion I have ever come across. This song actually proves what aexceptional guitar player Ritchie was. This is on par with Jeff Beck"s work at the time.
Look on RUclips and you'll see the interview with Jimmy Page where he admits Blackmore is a better lead player than him. Right from the horse's mouth. Now Page is great but Ritchie is the best.
It was so crappy the way they fired Rod Evans and the bass player. They did it so deceitfully. Quit listening to Deep Purple after they did that. So, he could scream. BFD!!!!!! Still sucked!!!!!!
Ian Gillans first scream ever with Deep Purple on record. Great.
They were probably working on Child In Time too at this time, I wonder how those early renditions went
I have no words to say how this is beautyful... I can only say simply... DEEP PURPLE... ❤

Marvaless, such a big future about to unfold for these talented young musicians. HALLELUJAR!!!!
I've got this the track on the cd "Singles A's and B's" (1993 EMI). Poor Nicky and Rod, they'd already been sacked but they were the last to know.
I didn't know they did this song. They have so much material and to this day do keep putting out recordings and playing live.
I've had this on lp for a long time. It's great to see it get more attention.
